10 Iconic On-Screen Couples of All-Time
As someone who grew up watching the same romance tropes used over and over again, I can almost immediately figure out on which on-screen couples have actual chemistry or not and a big part of it comes from the couples friendship off-screen. Some of them are really solid while others just straight up despise each other, and these relationships really affect the way their characters interact on-screen. Here, I’ll discuss 10 on-screen couples that are just too good together (in my opinion!)
1. AMITABH AND REKHA
Tumblr media
One of the most controversial couples of Bollywood, the Amitabh-Rekha formula was a hit after the film Do Anjaane (1976). Although the pair starred in 10 movies opposite each other, their most talked about movie with Jaya Bachchan was the 1981 film Silsila. The movie focused on a love triangle between Bachchan, his wife Jaya, and Rekha, and it was so controversial because many thought that it was a real life depiction of the three’s relationship. Although the pair haven’t collaborated after Silsila, they now seemed to have gotten over it and started respecting each other as they began greeting each other in award functions and whatnots.
2. SRK AND KAJOL
Tumblr media
This duo is basically like two puzzle pieces; they fit perfectly! The actors paired up for the first time in the 1993 thriller Baazigar and went on to star in 8 more movies. Those include Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001), Karan Arjun (1995), and of course Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), which is the longest running Bollywood movie ever. Off-screen, they are very good friends that still talk and work with each other, which shows that they are very well connected and it helps in improving their characters’ chemistry.  The romance and connection between them is so natural that you forget for a moment that they aren’t a real couple!
3. RAJ AND NARGIS
Tumblr media
The oldest on-screen couple in this list, the successful actors were paired with each other for the first time in 1948′s Aag. Although the film did an average job in the box office, the pair did the 1949 film Barsat, which went on to be a hit. They then starred in many blockbusters together, including Shree 420 (1955), Awaara (1951), and Chori Chori (1956). Even though in most of their movies they ended up together, off screen the duo were having an affair for a long time. Nargis wanted to marry Raj, but he refused her proposal, sinking herself into depression before meeting her future-husband Sunil Dutt. If only singing in the rain could make the actors fall in love with each other in real life.
4. SRIDEVI AND ANIL
Tumblr media
A very nostalgic couple in my opinion, they were showcased as a couple in the silver screen for the very first time in Mr. India (1987), even though they worked together in two films before this iconic one. They then went on to star in 10 movies together, with the most memorable one being 1991′s Lamhe. Sridevi went on to marry Anil Kapoor’s brother Boney Kapoor and take a 15-year-long hiatus from acting after 1997′s Judaai. On screen they were so comfortable together and a big part of it comes from the the actors real-life relationship. Many of the 80′s-90′s kids wished that they would collaborate again, but sadly it seems to be left as a dream after Sridevi’s untimely death.
5. AAMIR AND JUHI
Tumblr media
Probably one of my favorite couples of all time, Aamir and Juhi starred together in the movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), which was a successful venture. The duo went on to star in movies like Ishq (1997) and Love Love Love (1989). Although on-screen the couple shared great chemistry, off-screen they weren’t really in good terms. According to Aamir, the petty fight started in the set of Ishq where Aamir would avoid Juhi at all costs. The actors didn’t get in touch for seven years and when they did, it was when Aamir was getting a divorce from his first wife, Reena Dutta. The actors are now in talking terms and I seriously hope they do a movie together again.
6. VARUN AND ALIA
Tumblr media
Hands down the generation’s most prominant on-screen couple is Varun-Alia. Both of them debuting in Student of the Year in 2012 with Siddharth Malhotra, the interviews they give together indicates a rock solid friendship between them.  The duo continued starring alongside each other in Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania (2014), Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017), and Kalank (2019), most of them being hits. Whats there not to love about them? Both of them are equally charming and they steal all your attention whenever they are on-screen. And even though they are the newest/youngest couple in the list, I can say undoubtedly that in the future years, they’ll star in more romantic blockbusters opposite each other.
7. SALMAN AND MADHURI
Tumblr media
Let’s be honest: after the hit Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), you thought they were a match made in heaven. Although they starred in other movies before, this classic 90′s movie with a generic plot showed how much chemistry they have and its the kind that you don’t come across that often. In film promos, interviews, and reality shows it is apparent that the two actors have a very friendly relationship together. There is little to no hatred nor pettiness between them and they praise each other as artists whenever they can. They are basically the example of how memorable a movie can be if the right actors with a strong friendship are put opposite each other.
8. HRITHIK AND AISHWARYA
Tumblr media
*sigh* Where do I even start? The two equally gorgeous stars were opposite each other for the first time in Dhoom 2 (2006), a film that lacked a good script but was saved by the performances and the connection of the duo. The public loved them together on the silver screen (even though they were very against their kissing scene), so two years later they were starred in the award-winning Jodha-Akbar (2008), one of the best period films Bollywood has to offer. Although their next film together, Guzaarish (2010), was a box office failure, it didn’t falter the friendship and respect both the actors have for each other. I really do hope that they will work in more films together soon.
9. KATRINA AND AKSHAY
Tumblr media
Even though they have a prominent age gap between them (15 year, to be exact), there is no denying the fact that they work very well together. First paired up in Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (2006), they later on worked together in films like Namastey London (2007) and Singh Is Kinng (2008). Growing up in the 2000′s, I grew up watching their films with comedy and romance and the fact that they are gonna be back at it again with Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi (2020) just has me squealing with joy! Both the actors have grown so much (especially Kaif) and much of the growth comes from them learning from each other, which I have to commend to.
10. RANBIR AND DEEPIKA
Tumblr media
One of the biggest reasons I love their dynamic is not just because they look cute together. It is because of how much they have grown and are willing to overlook each other’s differences. They started dating in 2007 and worked in their first film together, Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008). Ranbir cheated on Deepika 2 years later, which caused them to break up. The media treated the news like hot gossip and there are many outrageous theories made out there, but somehow the actors learned to persevere and continued to work in more films together. Yeh Jawani Hai Dewani (2013) and Tamasha (2015) both have great performances from both the actors and themes.

Remembering Sunil Dutt on his 13th death anniversary. Sunil Dutt (6 June 1930 – 25 May 2005), born Balraj Dutt, was a movie actor, producer, director and politician. He was the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Manmohan Singh government (2004–2005). His son, Sanjay Dutt, is also an actor, while daughter Priya Dutt, a former Member of Parliament. In 1968, he was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India. In 1984 he joined the Indian National Congress party and was elected to Parliament of India for five terms from the constituency of Mumbai North West. Starting out in radio, Sunil Dutt was hugely popular on the Hindi service of Radio Ceylon, the oldest radio station in South Asia. He moved to acting in Hindi films and got introduced to the industry with 1955's Railway Platform. He shot to stardom in the 1957 film Mother India where he co-starred with Nargis, whom he married on 11 March 1958. Dutt played a short-tempered, angry son of Nargis. During the making of this film a fire happened on the sets. It is believed that Dutt braved the raging fire to save Nargis and thereby won her love. He had one son Sanjay Dutt, also a successful film actor and two daughters, Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt. His daughter Namrata married Kumar Gaurav, son of Rajendra Kumar. The two fathers were co-stars in Mother India. Dutt was one of the major stars of Hindi cinema in the late 1950s and 1960s and continued to star in many successful films which included Sadhna (1958), Sujata (1959), Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), Khandan (1965) and Padosan (1967). His collaboration with B.R. Chopra proved to be successful in films such as Gumraah (1963), Waqt (1965) and Hamraaz (1967). One of his favourite writers and friends was Aghajani Kashmeri. Dutt created a record of sorts by directing and starring in the unique film Yaadein (1964) in which he was the only actor. He later turned producer of the 1968 film Man Ka Meet which introduced his brother Som Dutt who was unsuccessful in films. In 1971 he produced, directed and starred in the big-budget period romantic film Reshma Aur Shera (1971) which was a huge failure at the box office. He continued to star in hits that included Heera (1973), Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye (1974), Nagin (1976) andJaani Dushman (1979). He also starred in a series of Punjabi religious movies in the 1970s: Man Jeete Jag Jeet (1973), Dukh Bhanjan Tera Naam (1974), and Sat Sri Akal (1977). He launched his son Sanjay's career with Rocky in 1981 which was a success. Shortly before the film's release, Dutt's wife died of pancreatic cancer. He founded the Nargis Dutt Foundation in her memory for the cure of cancer patients. He was a sponsor of the India Project, an organisation akin to Operation Smile for the treatment of Indian children with facial deformities. In 1982 he was appointed as the Sheriff of Mumbai, an apolitical titular position bestowed on him by the Maharashtra government for a year. He turned character actor in the 1980s often playing an elderly police officer or patriarch at the centre of family feuds. He retired from the film industry in the early 1990s to turn to politics after his last few releases including Yash Chopra's Parampara (1992) and J.P.Dutta's Kshatriya (1993). His political career was halted for some years in the early 1990s when he worked to free his son from jail after he was arrested for keeping an AK-56, a Pistol and hand grenades that he claimed was for protection of his family after bomb blasts in Mumbai. In 1995 he won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the film industry for four decades. He returned to films shortly before his death in 2003's Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. He shared the screen with son Sanjay for the first time although they had appeared earlier in Rocky (1981) and Kshatriya (1993).

Over the last few years, we have seen more and more filmmakers opting for the biopic route. A big factor for this, is the fact that the audience are always interested in knowing more about someone they admire. Be it the olympic athlete Milkha Singh or India’s most successful captain M.S Dhoni, we are always eager to know more about the lives of these legends and what went into making them who they are today. And the box-office collections of these biopics provide more than enough proof of the audience’s interest.
While we have many biopics in the pipeline, one that excites us the most is Sanju. Sanju is without a doubt the most awaited biopic of the year. What separates Sanju from the rest is that it is based on the life Sanjay Dutt. Mostly, the biopics that we have seen are about sports persons who have gone on to achieve the impossible or people who have made unbelievable sacrifices for the greater good. But, it is the first time we will see a biopic about a person who we have seen so much of and is still, very much in the business. Another interesting part about Sanju is that the makers have time and again been extremely specific about the fact that Sanju in no way tries to glorify the actor. We all know that Sanjay Dutt has gone through many ups and downs in his life. The filmmakers have insisted that they have showcased his life on the big screen as it was, they have not attempted to make him look like a hero or a bad guy.
With the release of Sanju less than a month away, we take undertake a detailed study of the film right from the point it was conceptualized.
Even though Rajkumar Hirani has worked on quite a few films with Sanjay Dutt, including Munna Bhai M.B.B.S, Lage Raho Munna Bhai and P.K, he never was interested in making a biopic on him. But, his interactions with Sanjay Dutt when he was out on parole made him think that even the most creative writers won’t be able to come up with such a story and he knew he had to make a film on it. During an interview with a leading daily at the time of P.K’s release, Rajkumar Hirani revealed the same. He said, “However, much earlier when I was penning PK, Sanjay was out on parole and I happened to meet him. He just started talking about his life. He was lonely. Maanayata (I think) was in hospital and he used to go there (sometimes) and then come home to an empty house. So, he was just venting, speaking straight from the heart. And, he started giving me anecdotes that were just gems for a filmmaker… ki aisi film toh hum soch hi nahin sakte, likh hi nahin sakte… Even though I had worked with him, I wasn’t close friends with him, like, say, other filmmakers such as Sanjay Gupta, Mahesh Manjrekar and others were. I knew Sanju, but there was always a distance. He had never opened up like he did on that occasion. I had gone at 5 pm, stayed with him till 3 am and then came back home.
The next day, when I was editing, he called me and asked me to come over. I think he wanted to talk. After that, I called Abhijat (writer Abhijat Joshi) and told him I’m hearing these crazy anecdotes, which even if I want to write, I don’t know how to go about it.
The following day, I took Abhijat along. For over 25 days, we sat for a crazy amount of time and recorded everything. We didn’t know if there was a film because most of the things he recounted were anecdotal. I had no idea how to string them together. But what we did feel was that here was a man who had led such a crazy life in every way. He was coping with the loss of his mother, he had been to rehab for drug addiction, then he went to jail (sighs). Besides what he told me, I also met others who knew him — journalists, cops, relatives and friends. I felt there was a movie that should be told. The first thought that came to me was we will say it like it is. I told Sanju that we won’t glorify him and he was okay with it. He was like, jo bhi hai, banao.. He had talked about drugs, women, the gun, almost everything that happened. For a filmmaker, it’s like a goldmine.”
In the same interview, Rajkumar Hirani also revealed how they finalised on Sanju as the title for the biopic. He said, “Actually, we thought of many titles. One of them was Aisa Hi Hoon. Anything you attach with a name in a biopic is like an adjective. Even if you say Aisa Hi Hoon or Sarphira, either you are glorifying him or attacking him. One thing all of us were clear about was that we wanted a neutral title. Dutt seemed a little harsh. Then I heard a gem from him. Apparently, Nargisji used to call him ‘Sanju’ with a lot of affection. We thought this is the most non-committal and neutral title, with no preconceived notions.”
Another important part for Rajkumar Hirani was making sure to get the casting of the film absolutely spot on. Since the biopic is about Sanjay Dutt, most of the people are aware of how he was a person, his mannerisms, his body language and his style of talking etc. Not only Sanjay Dutt, the film also shows his father Sunil Dutt, his mother Nargis and many more people who had a big influence on his life. So, if the characters in the film are not convincing enough for the audience, he may risk losing their interest.
Rajkumar Hirani’s choice of Ranbir Kapoor for playing the character of Sanjay Dutt certainly raised eyebrows. Although there are no doubts about Ranbir Kapoor’s acting skills, people were still surprised with Hirani’s choice since until now Ranbir hasn’t been seen in such a role. But if a director like Rajkumar Hirani believes that an actor can do the job, it means he definitely sees something in him by which he was convinced. And now with the trailer of the biopic being out, we couldn’t agree more with Rajkumar Hirani’s choice. In the three minutes of the trailer, Ranbir has brilliantly portrayed the life of Sanjay Dutt with all shades available on the colour palette of emotion. The trailer starts off with the younger days of Sanjay Dutt, during which, he explains how he ended up getting addicted to drugs. The trailer also talks about his affairs and also makes a reference to an alleged connection with the underworld and the media speculation surrounding it.
This also proves the point of the makers that they are not holding back on anything with this biopic, they aren’t shying away from sharing bold details about his much talked about controversial life, ranging from his drug addiction to multiple link-ups.
Ranbir Kapoor also said during an interview with a leading daily, that they are portraying a fraud man in the biopic. He said, “With the Sanjay Dutt biopic, he has been so honest about his life. We are not portraying a Gandhi like charater. We’re portraying a very fraud man. He’s someone who is love and disliked. He’s the most controversial, and to have the ability to tell about your life so honestly, and to make a movie out of it is very brave.”
He also mentioned that he admires Sanjay Dutt’s courage to come forward and share his life with everybody, He said, “If I was in his position, I don’t think I could be this honest about my life and make myself look like a person who is not nice. If an audience can take something from that and learn from his life.I think it’s a very positive thing.”
During an interview with a leading daily, Rajkumar Hirani was asked what convinced him that Ranbir is the right choice to play the part. He said, “The first reason for choosing him is that he’s a fantastic actor. And the second reason is that he is at the perfect age. I needed an actor who could be 21 (years old) because that is where the film begins. That was the age when Sanju was shooting for Rocky and his drug phase started. And then we have Sanju when he came out of prison (around 56 years). So, we needed someone who could fit that transformation. I had a basic draft of this biopic when I sent Ranbir a message, ‘I’ve a script, let’s meet up when you’re free.’ Ranbir is usually aware of everything that is happening in the industry. He is very sharp. I’m guessing he already knew that I was planning a biopic on Sanjay. When I sent him the message, Ranbir promptly replied, ‘I hope it’s not the Sanjay Dutt biopic.’ And I thought, ‘Oh God, maybe he has heard and he may not want to do it.’ I told him it’s the same script, but let’s meet. When I met him, I realised he knew a lot about Sanju. He had spent time with him and knew him well. He used to work out at his gym and had probably heard the stories. But when he saw the angle of the story, he was like, ‘It’s interesting, let’s do it.’”
After being casted in the film, it was time for Ranbir to prepare himself for portraying a character like Sanjay Dutt on screen. Rajkumar Hirani further revealed what went into recreating Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt on screen. He said, “Physically, they’re not similar. Sanju is bigger, but Ranbir is slightly taller than him. He doesn’t seem so, but it is true. Ranbir worked very hard to get the physicality right. He spent days watching tons of videos to strike the right balance and when you observe him in the film, you will notice that there is a resemblance of Sanjay Dutt, yet you know it is Ranbir Kapoor. If he did anything slightly more, it would look caricaturish and if he did a little less, it wouldn’t work. I didn’t think about anyone else. I first thought of Ranbir and went straight to him and I can tell you, we were right.”
Besides Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt, Dia Mirza will be seen playing the role of his wife Manyaata Dutt. Paresh Rawal will be stepping into the shoes of the late Sunil Dutt and Manisha Koirala will essay the role of his mother Nargis in the film. Jim Sarbh will be playing the role of Salman Khan and Vicky Kaushal is said to be playing the role of the actors close friend, Kumar Gaurav. Although, the makers insist that Vicky Kaushal’s is not only playing Kumar Gaurav but his role is an amalgamation of his few close friends. Sonam Kapoor, who made her Bollywood debut with Ranbir Kapoor back in 2017, will represent his many love interests through her role. Anushka Sharma too will be seen playing a cameo in the film. When a leading daily asked Rajkummar Hirani what was her role in the film, he said, “To showcase a biopic like this, you have to compress few parts into one. Similarly, Anushka Sharma’s character is derived from myself and Abhijat. She is playing a biographer from London, and she comes to India. Sanjay wants her to write a book on him whereas she doesn’t want to.
“We were also skeptical at first whether we should do this character or not. So basically she is us, but not as a filmmaker… (as) a biographer.”
But, we were obviously curious to know how did Sanjay Dutt react to the trailer of the film. So, when Rajkumar Hirani was asked about the actors reaction during am interview with a leading daily, he said, “Yes, I have shown it as well as some scenes to him. He gets overwhelmed. In fact, I told him to see the full film, but he said no, he would watch it when it’s complete. He came to the sets only twice. I think he is pretty brave. He has talked about everything in his life. I don’t think everyone will have that courage.”
Sanju will be hitting the theatres on 29th June 2018. If the trailer is anything to go by, the movie promises to be one big roller coaster ride! Just a three minute glimpse into the film has already got fans waiting for the film with bated breaths! 29th June couldn’t come any sooner!

10 secret relationships in Bollywood that shocked the world! For More Videos : http://goo.gl/8NWCQ0 Follow us on facebook- https://www.facebook.com/PassionateVideo/?ref=hl 1. Kangana Ranaut and Hrithik Roshan The most recent example of hidden relationships in Bollywood is of course Kangana and Hrithik’s recently publicized relationship. The world had no idea that ANYTHING was going on between the duo until Kanagana referred to Hrithik as her “silly ex” in an interview. What ensued was a battle that has rightfully SHOCKED Bollywood beyond belief. Hrithik is of the view that it was a “one-sided” relationship when Kangana was in fact talking to an “impostor email id”. Kangana has on the other hand refuted all such claims and also provided evidence to prove that they were dating! 2. Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra It is yet to be proven, but a certain section in tinsel town is of the view that Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra had a secret relationship not too long ago! In fact, at a certain point of time, rumour mills were abuzz about their alleged marriage! If reports are to be believed, SRK and PC got hitched in Toronto around their close friends… Most likely a well-thought-out rumour, the duo haven’t ever paid heed to them and SRK has also had another son with his wife Gauri Khan. 3. Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan Yet another secret relationship that probably had the world flabbergasted was that of Rekha and Amitabh. The duo apparently had an affair while filming a movie WHILE Amitabh was already married to Jaya. Rumours have suggested that the two would meet in secret at a friend’s home in Mumbai, where Rekha would bring him food. They added fuel to the fire when Rekha walked in to Neetu and Rishi Kapoor’s wedding wearing a ‘mangalsutra’ and ‘sindoor’… 4. Nargis and Raj Kapoor Not many knew about Raj Kapoor and Nargis’ tumultuous relationship till much after it ended. Raj Kapoor was already married to Krishna Kapoor when he fell for Nargis. The two did about 16 films together and were the most sought-after on-screen pair in Bollywood. Soon after, their chemistry made way off screen as well.. Nargis knew about Raj Kapoor’s philandering ways and when he refused to leave his wife for her, she found solace in the lovelorn Sunil Dutt. 5. Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra While rumours existed for a long time about Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra’s alleged affair, the two never came out in denial or acceptance of it. Aditya Chopra was married to his childhood sweetheart Payal Khanna, 6. Malaika Arora Khan and Arjun Kapoor When reports began emerging of Malaika Arora Khan’s alleged liason with Arjun Kapoor, Bollywood was in disbelief. No one chose to believe that the Khan daughter-in-law would have an affair, but a lot of different rumours began engulfing the rumour mill. Recently, Malaika and Arbaaz also announced their “break” which added fuel to the fire! More so, Arjun allegedly keeps a safe distance from his previous mentor Salman Khan 7. Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi While there is no proof of Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babi’s alleged relationship, Bhatt has come out and told the world about his extra-marital affair. The two began living together while he was still married to Lorraine Bright (Kiran Bhatt) and had a pretty steady couple of months. This was until Mahesh discovered a pretty shocking secret about Parveen. 8. Kangana Ranaut and Ajay Devgn Another alleged relationship that shocked the world was that of Kangana and Ajay’s. Kangana and Ajay got together while they were shooting for ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai’. They apparently had a “no strings attached” relationship while he was still married to Kajol. 9. Nargis Fakhri and Uday Chopra The world was truly shocked when they learnt of Nargis Fakhri and Uday Chopra’s secret relationship. While the two kept their ‘good friends’ comments in handy, it was pretty obvious that they were in a relationship especially when pictures of them on vacation were leaked 10. Vikram Bhatt and Sushmita Sen The most recent example of hidden relationships in Bollywood is of course Kangana and Hrithik’s recently publicized relationship. The world had no idea that ANYTHING was going on between the duo until Kanagana referred to Hrithik as her “silly ex” in an interview. Wishing Leena Chandavarkar many happy returns of the day.
Leena Chandavarkar is a former actress who appeared in Bollywood movies and now appears in reality shows.
Leena Chandavarkar came into the limelight after finishing as one of the runners-up for the Fresh Face Competition organized across the country by Filmfare. Initially, she worked in advertisements but eventually ventured into films. She made her debut in Man Ka Meet for Sunil Dutt, and it was his wife Nargis who groomed her to be an actress. Between 1969 and 1979, Leena acted in many films. She was cast opposite many of popular heroes of that era. She gave one of her best performances in Mehboob Ki Mehndi with Rajesh Khanna in 1971.
Bairaag is another example where she acted with the great screen legend Dilip Kumar and a mighty star cast of Saira Bano, Prem Chopra and Helen.
She appeared as a guest judge for the first 2 episodes of "K for Kishore", a new reality TV singing show launched by Sony TV during December 2007. She is now appearing for the reality shows. She also penned some songs for Amit Kumar and Rajesh Bambal for a music album.
She had an arranged marriage to her first husband, Siddharth Bandodkar, who came from a prominent Goan political family. He died from an accidental gunshot wound, a few days into the marriage, leaving Leena a widow at age 25. A few years later, she defied her father by marrying singing legend Kishore Kumar. Her father initially objected because Kumar had been married three times already, and was more than 20 years older than her, but he soon came around and welcomed Kumar into the family. She has a son with Kishore Kumar named Sumit Ganguly. Kishore died in 1987, leaving Leena once again a widow at age 37.
