gods as someone that was raised in several churches (mom minister so I got all the shitty behind the scenes drama starting at like 4yo and never really believed beyond general agnostic-ish feelings. which apparently is a super common trend for pastor/minister kids to nope tf out of the church asap) the 'forcing you to be The Right Christian™ Or You Don't Deserve™™ Charity' thing hits hard. especially when I psych myself out of asking for help because I'm constantly remembering how openly hostile some of those places are to even poor christian people using their services.

like one particular church (the "open and affirming" one that threw the only trans woman out of the 20 person congregation because the old white guy treasurer learned she was trans after like 8 years and suddenly didn't want to look at her, or "worse", hear her sing) had a monthly meal for the (very poor neighborhood) community. they'd make everyone pray to God for 20 minutes before letting anyone touch even a slice of bread, but lock them out of the sanctuary during church hours because they were, I wish I was joking and that this wasn't a direct quote, "dirty homeless looters". you had to pray correctly to get food but don't you dare sully the churches doorstep trying to attend worship. meanwhile the church people organizing it are going off about how dare these people be standing in line for food instead of attending church as Real Good Christians Should.

One of the reasons I started walking away from the church (there's a couple reasons) was at our summer mission trip (yes, I know.) In previous years, we had kept local: deep cleaning the homeless shelter, renovating the local Latino advocacy building, soup kitchen stuff. But one of the (more wealthy) girls in our group wanted to try doing a mission abroad.

Best we could do is Toronto.

We signed up with a shelter there and they gave us some tasks. The shelter REALLY played up how bad it was in this part of town- the gang violence, the culture of sin, the regressive way the men treat women in their home country.

So like... I'm from America. I've been to Chicago. Not to compare but like... hmm..

So during the introduction to how terrible it is in Toronto (...?) Our ambassador takes us through parts of town to show us what it's like to be homeless there. It was a very somber thing. We were given a small amount of money and we were to pretend it was all we had. Try to survive on a few coins.

We take our tour. Remember that this is supposed to scare us.

She takes us to an area where we hear drums. We hide behind a building. "You hear those drums? This is a homeless village. Young people come here seeking community, but you will be turned away if you cannot provide a service for them. They will only use your body for so long."

So... I'd been to drum circles before. And this was very much a drum circle. Like sure these people were a little crunchy, but it was pretty clear to me that these guys were just cutting loose after the day of work.

She takes us to the red light district.

"This is the red light district," she says. "This is where all the homosexuals come. You see that there are many young people here who are attracted to the high life. But you will see: the older men will always come looking for the younger one's to manipulate and that's how many homeless people become prostitutes."

I, a half-in-half-out of the closet lesbian, for the first time in my life, saw two happy gay men arm in arm and it was moving for me. I saw people having a good time. I'd already figured out she was full of shit. Now I was mad.

So we get back to the church we're staying at and I'm already having second thoughts about this visit to Canada. She tells us that our mission this week is to tutor some Somali kids in English and math.

... I feel... oncoming dread.

They didn't give us a lesson,plan or anything. Were supposed to just help them learn where they're stuck in their lessons. And then on Friday we'll have a trip to the museum of science and industry.

I was the only one in our group that had ever encountered a Muslim to know that Friday was their holy day. And that was when I realized that it was a conversion tactic. I asked her about it like... 'is Friday really a good time to do that?' And she was like 'well, it's the last day you'll be here and we want to celebrate don't we?'

And I was livid, but I was in a different country with a bunch of people who believed this woman's lies. And I didn't say anything to my friends because I was already kind of an outcast there, no one was going to believe me.

So I held my tongue, but from then on I lost a lot of respect for Christian-run charities and even now I'll always be looking for their angle.

But it was only in 2022, after activists exerted pressure for more information, that it disclosed that some of the recipients of its funds in Israel were organisations like Regavim, a radical pro-settler group that is forcibly taking over Palestinian lands. The CRA has yet to take any action against Mizrachi Canada, which faces multiple allegations including violation of the Income Tax Act, the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act, and going against official Canadian policy.

The scale and sophistication of the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks have led many counterterrorism analysts to revisit their assumptions about the group’s intent and capabilities. And one of the biggest questions many have is whether the group, which has never launched a successful attack abroad in its 36-year existence, could transform into a global threat, rather than simply remain a regional one.

On Thursday, seven individuals were arrested in Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands on suspicion of preparing to carry out terrorist attacks against Jewish institutions in Europe. Three suspects detained in Berlin and another in Rotterdam are alleged Hamas members with links to the Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing. According to German authorities, the suspects were tasked with locating a preexisting weapons cache, which would facilitate future attacks. The orders allegedly came from Hamas leadership based in Lebanon.

In the United States, FBI Director Christopher Wray has warned since the Oct. 7 attacks about the elevated terrorism threat level, stating before the U.S. Congress: “We assess that the actions of Hamas and its allies will serve as an inspiration the likes of which we haven’t seen since [the Islamic State] launched its so-called caliphate years ago.” The Europeans are also worried. EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson recently stated: “With the war between Israel and Hamas, and the polarization it causes in our society, with the upcoming holiday season, there is a huge risk of terrorist attacks in the European Union.”

From its inception, Hamas has always been something of a duality. The group is both a nationalist movement dedicated to establishing a Palestinian state and a violent Islamist resistance movement, with an ideology derived from the Muslim Brotherhood, originally dedicated to destroying the state of Israel, according to its founding organizational charter. (The charter was revised in 2017 to allow for the possibility of a two-state solution, but the group remains committed to “the full and complete liberation of Palestine, from the river to the sea.”) So while its ideology is infused with references to jihad, it was not the global jihad embraced by al Qaeda, the Islamic State, or their respective affiliates worldwide. Accordingly, the Islamic State has repeatedly denigrated Hamas as apostates, criticizing the group for its involvement with elections and for depending so heavily on Shiite Iran for support and patronage.

Though Hamas has never launched a successful attack abroad, there have been several disrupted plots tied to Hamas. In 1997, three individuals arrested in New York City for allegedly planning an attack on the subway were investigated for possible links to Hamas. In November 2003, a Gaza-born Canadian citizen named Jamal Akal was arrested by Israeli authorities as he attempted to leave Gaza and travel back to Canada, where he was allegedly plotting to carry out terrorist attacks against Jewish communities in the United States and Canada. Akal pleaded guilty and served four years in prison in Israel before being released back to Canada, though he maintained that he had been tortured into signing a confession, and his lawyer said Akal accepted a plea deal because he believed conviction was unavoidable. Israel denied that Akal was mistreated.

Hamas does not have a prohibition against killing Westerners—its indiscriminate suicide attacks have killed citizens of Western countries before—but it has mostly eschewed targeting Western interests in favor of focusing on attacking Israel at home. Hamas has maintained long-standing fundraising and propaganda dissemination networks in the West, though, including in the United States. The Holy Land Foundation was a Hamas-linked charity based in Texas that was convicted in 2008 of providing material support to Hamas, funneling more than $12 million to the group over the years.

As a member of Tehran’s “axis of resistance,” Hamas enjoys Iranian largesse in the form of financing, training, and logistical support, provided by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force. Since the early 1980s, Iran helped build Lebanese Hezbollah into a comprehensive terrorist organization with global reach and top-tier capabilities that has launched terrorist attacks in Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Tehran could now choose to do the same with Hamas, even assisting the group with developing an external operations attack network, as it did with Hezbollah.

There seems to be growing support in the Arab world for the Iranian regime on the heels of Oct. 7, with a recent Arab Barometer poll showing that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, enjoys approval ratings that matched or exceeded that of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati President Mohammed bin Zayed. Popular support in the Arab world matters, especially when it crosses sectarian lines, because it can provide cover for the Iranian regime if it decides to begin turning Hamas into the next Hezbollah.

For years leading up to the horrific attack on Oct. 7, the conventional wisdom was that Hamas was content with reaping the financial benefits of its arrangement in Gaza—where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and others encouraged and facilitated Qatari cash infusions for economic development—and thus that it had little interest in attacking Israel.

But Oct. 7 may have been a turning point for the group, and it could begin shifting its attention to targets outside of its immediate environs. Speaking in early December on Al-Aqsa television, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri called for attacks against Israel’s allies, specifically the United States and the United Kingdom. “We need violent acts against American and British interests everywhere, as well as the interests of all the countries that support the occupation,” Zuhri said.

As terrorism scholar Tore Hamming recently observed, there is a range of factors that are likely to contribute to the trajectory of the terrorism threat posed by Hamas in the West: the length of the conflict between Israel and Hamas; the scale and intensity of Israel’s offensive in Gaza; and the degree of support that Western nations provide to Israel. These factors will be considered alongside the daily images of suffering and destruction streaming out of Gaza each day as the civilian death toll continues to climb.

Hamas seems to be hoping that its ideology, its cause, and its brand will go global in much the same way the Islamic State’s did. Its propaganda is resonating with broad swaths of Western publics, especially younger generations and many university students who have turned out in large numbers at anti-Israel demonstrations and protests. Even if just a small fraction of these individuals become radicalized, it increases the likelihood of a lone-actor attack.

Hamas is a different organization after the Oct. 7 attacks, and intelligence officials and security services should adapt accordingly. As the holiday season enters full swing, a range of soft targets—from synagogues to Christmas markets—will remain vulnerable to potential attacks either inspired or directed by Hamas, which has openly declared its desire to ensure that the war does not remain contained to Gaza but also threatens Israel and its supporters worldwide.

One of Canada's intelligence review bodies has launched an investigation into the Canada Revenue Agency's work on charities in response to allegations of bias and Islamophobia.

On Tuesday, the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency (NSIRA) — the watchdog set up to monitor the activities of Canada's national security and intelligence bodies — released a letter it sent to Bob Hamilton, commissioner of the CRA, announcing its intention to probe the department's review and analysis wing.

That CRA division is tasked with making sure registered charities aren't being used to finance terrorism. It has been accused of unfairly targeting Muslim charities for audits based on questionable grounds.

NSIRA said the review will focus on the CRA program's "national security activities and decision-making relating to registered Canadian charities, to assess their reasonableness, necessity and compliance with the law." [...]

reading (all fictional or memoirs or poetry collections — none are like academic texts etc) : a queer muslim memoir: we have always been here (the author, who to my knowledge uses they/them pronouns now, also has a few articles on guardian and a great project here on tumblr called something like ‘just allah and me’ that photographs and tells the stories of queer muslims across the world), radiant fugitives, hani and ishu’s guide to fake dating, the henna wars, guapa, if they come for us, blood orange by mx yaffa, love is an ex country, zachary ying and the dragon emperor (one of the few on this list i haven’t read, but i’m pretty sure the mc is muslim and implied to be gay), you exist too much. only this beautiful moments is about characters who were raised muslim but faith isn’t a big part of any of their identities (i think, it’s been a while since i’ve read this). but it’s about queer iranians, and so it definitely explores being queer in muslim spaces and the intersection of that… it touched me deeply and that’s why i’m adding it here.

queer muslim spaces on tumblr: queer muslim culture is, religious queer culture is (not only about queer muslims, but often is, and the mod is a queer muslim i think), we are not haram. dyemelikeasunset is a queer muslim who has a wonderful comic up on webtoon, and whilst their blog is a personal one and not focused around being queer and muslim, you may enjoy their comic! (their characters aren’t muslim, though, but they’re queer). bigenderrevert and mlmrevert are personal blogs run by queer muslims, but their blogs often do focus on being queer and muslim.

Uyghur Human Rights Project: Promoting Uyghur Rights and Equality

Justice for All – Save Uighur: Pushing for Policy Changes That Protect Uyghurs

Justice for All was founded in 2001 to combat Islamophobia in the US and worldwide. As they grew, they began addressing women’s issues, particularly those that affected Muslim women. They also established the Save Uighur project, which aims to raise awareness on the plight Uyghurs endure, and to push for policy changes that protect the Uyghur people.

Anti-Slavery International: Combatting Discrimination Against Uyghurs

Anti-Slavery International was founded in 1839 by two abolitionists, Thomas Clarkson and Thomas Fowell Buxton, to criminalize the transatlantic slave trade. The practice saw Black slaves being transported from Africa to the Americas, and put an end to indentured labor systems in the British colonies. Today, their headquarters are based in London.

Ummah Welfare Trust: Providing Emergency Relief to Uyghur Refugees

The Ummah Welfare Trust was founded in 2001 to provide relief to people affected by poverty. Since then, they have worked in over 20 countries worldwide, and as of 2018, they have spent approximately £2 million on projects and services to support Uyghur refugees in Turkey. Today, their headquarters are based in the UK.

PEN International was founded in 1921 to promote human rights and freedom of expression for cultures around the world. They expanded quickly and opened up PEN Centres around the world, which aimed to offer writers and poets everywhere a place to freely and creatively build on their art, and express their culture. Today, they operate 145 PEN centers worldwide and are active in more than 100 countries. Their Uyghur PEN Center was founded in Sweden in 2006 by Kurash Kosen, to further honor and preserve Uyghur culture.

The Islamic Human Rights Commission was founded in 1997 to advocate for the civil rights of Muslims. Since then, they’ve expanded on their work and carried out research, advocacy, and campaigns to raise awareness on Muslims’ rights worldwide. In 2008, they began working to help Uyghurs.

Muslim Aid: Offering Urgent Support to Uyghurs

Muslim Aid was founded in 1985 to provide emergency relief to those affected by humanitarian crises in Africa. By 1987, they had begun responding to other humanitarian crises too, including those in Pakistan and later Sudan. Since then, they’ve worked in over 29 countries to support refugees, including Uyghur refugees living in Turkey.

Please Remember Project Moses Colorado this Giving Tuesday, November 29th

PLEASE REMEMBER PROJECT MOSES COLORADO ON GIVING TUESDAY NOVEMBER 29th 2022

In less than two weeks, on December 29, 2022, it will be Giving Tuesday 2022.  This giving Tuesday, please remember the millions of persecuted and threatened Christian minorities in nations such as Pakistan, Egypt, Syria and Iraq.  It is the mission Project Moses Colorado to aid, assist, advocate for and, where possible, protect, persecuted and threatened Christian minorities.  

In 2021, after years of helping a threatened extended Pakistani Christian family of 17 Project Moses Colorado was able to help all 17 to receive asylum in Canada.  Annually, between 500 and 1000 young Pakistani Christian women are kidnapped, forced to marry their abductors and forced to convert to Islam. While technically illegal, Pakistani authorities generally overlook the practice. 

When, in 2013, a young Pakistani Christian man fell in love with and married a young Muslim woman from a militant family, who then became a Christian, however, it became a death sentence not only for the young Christian man and his wife, but also included all of the young man's brothers and sisters and their families, a total of 17 individuals.  The families abandoned their homes and businesses and fled to Bangkok Thailand, which has a United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) office at which refugees may apply for asylum.  

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Pakistani Christians in Bangkok, as well as Sri Lanka.  UNHCR takes an average of eight to nine years to process asylum applications from persecuted Christians.  In the meantime their situations are often desperate.  They are not allowed to work legally (making some vulnerable to slavery and human trafficking) As they were only able to travel to Thailand using a short-term tourist visa, and because of the unconscionably lengthy period of time that the UNHCR takes to process their asylum applications, they are forced to overstay their visas making them vulnerable to arrest, where they are either given exorbitant fines or deported.  

It took until 2019 for UNHCR to rule on the group's application.  Asylum was only granted to the young man, his ex-Muslim wife, and the two children they had while in Bangkok.  The remaining 13 family members had no choice but to continue to live an underground existence in Bangkok.  Fortunately, strong advocacy from a Canadian church and Project Moses Colorado caused Canada to ignore the UNHCR ruling and grant asylum and relocation to all 17.  

Sadly, however, that happy result is not common.  Currently, Project Moses Colorado is aiding other Pakistani Christians in Bangkok and elsewhere, whose asylum applications have been rejected and/or those living in dangerous situations, to the extent we are able.   Even more sadly we have lost contact with others, for whom we can now only pray.
