Flufftober Day 29: Glitter (Magnus and Ragnor ft Malec and Ragnarina)

A loud CRASH echoed through the loft, followed by Magnus's gasp, which scared Alec. He bolted to the main room where Magnus stood at the defensive, standing across from him was Catarina and a man with horns.

“You can't be alive. You can't be.” Magnus denied.

Catarina rolled her eyes. “Magnus it's really him. It's Ragnor.” She told him.

Magnus shook his head and the man called Ragnor shook his. “Really Magnus I see the hope in your eyes. You always hope even if it's all stacked against you.”

Magnus took a shaky breath. “I held you as you died. You can't be.”

Ragnor sighed. “Well if the first point didn't convince you maybe this will. Remember the time in 2007 when you got drunk and wore nothing but acid washed jeans and body glitter? I believe my beloved still has those pictures.”

“Ragnor don't you dare!” Magnus yelled as Alec laughs. “Wait really?”

Magnus glares at the man in front of him before it hits him that it's actually him. He lowers his hands before he walks over and hugs him tightly.

“My dearest friend...” Magnus whispers, tears stinging in his eyes.

Ragnor smiles. “You simply can't be rid of me.”

“Stubborn old man.” Magnus laughs.

“Though really you're going to poke someone's eye out with how high your hair is.” Ragnor told him and everyone laughed as Magnus shoved him.

“Shut up.” Magnus groaned.

Alec laughed as Magnus let go of Ragnor to put an arm around him. “So you're the great Ragnor Fell?”

Ragnor looked at Alec and scowled. “I am. What of it Shadowhunter?”

“Ragnor...” Magnus and Catarina warned, but Alec only reached out a hand.

“I'm Alec Lightwood. Magnus talked about you quite a bit and he was upset that I never got the chance, but I'm glad to meet you now.” He stated.

Ragnor blinked but soon cracked a smile. “Well you're on the right track Lightwood. Lets see how you feel about Magnus when I show off pictures of him in the 80s.”

“I feel an immense betrayal coming.” Magnus states, already feeling mortified of his bad choices in fashion back then.

Alec only kissed his cheek. “Haven't you told me before that clothes were merely forms of expression? You wore things you thought looked great and I have no doubt you strutted the streets with your head high and looked amazing while doing so.”

He planted another kiss to Magnus's slowly darkening cheeks before kissing him softly and Magnus smiled genuinely.

“You continue to amaze me my Alexander.” He mused.

Catarina smiled as she kissed Ragnor's cheek. “See Ragnor? You have nothing to worry about. Magnus is in good hands.”

Ragnor smiled as he pulled her close. “So it seems my dear. So it seems.”

This month we’re showcasing an author in the fandom who has written popular works such as i just want your kiss, boy and you take me somewhere i have never been. Charley can be found on ao3 as ohprongs and on tumblr as lightwoodlesbians, and I’d like to thank her once again for agreeing to be our first author showcase of OML! 

1. When did you start writing fics? Tell us a little of your journey as a fic writer. 

I started writing fic in 2010, which seems like so long ago. I found out about fanfiction as a thing because I’d just finished Mockingjay and I was like, “well, that can’t be it.” So I did some googling and stumbled across Fanfiction.net. Initially, I wrote fic for The Hunger Games, but then in the summer of 2011, I read Harry Potter for the first time and that was when I really started writing fics properly. The James/Lily & Marauder-era fandom was my thing, but occasionally I wrote fic for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and I even wrote a Merlin fic once. Eventually I stopped being so active in fandom and gradually stopped writing fic. Then my housemates, who had read the TMI books, wanted to watch this new show called Shadowhunters that was coming out, and I watched it with them. It was either the best/worst decision of my life because I got sucked back into Tumblr and fandom and fanfic (only this time it was on AO3), and here we are!

2. What fic of yours are you most proud of and why?

and there’s something about the city today, like all the colours conspire to overwhelm the grey, I think. Getting past the ridiculously long title, it was a fic I actually planned (usually I just write and see what happens), and everything seemed to come together with it. It was very easy to write, and it was fun to do, as well. It’s also a monster fic, pushing 20k words, but it didn’t feel like that when I was writing it. Of course, the response to it always makes a difference, and I’m so happy a lot of people liked it as much as I did.

3. Who is your favorite character to write and why? Which character do you find the most challenging to write?

I don’t know if I have a favourite character to write. I quite often write from Alec’s POV, and because I quite often write meet cutes, a lot of the time I get to just wax poetic about how beautiful Magnus Bane is, so that’s always fun. I feel like all of the characters have their own challenges when writing, because you don’t want to make them stereotypical or two-dimensional.

4. What is the hardest part about being a fic author? The easiest?

The hardest part is sitting down at a computer/phone with a blank document in front of you, screaming internally about how you should be writing and just...not being able to write. I don’t think that’s special to fic authors - it happens to everyone! But I definitely have too many ideas and not enough motivation to write. Another thing for me personally is the pressure of having a WIP - I know what it’s like as a reader to wait for updates, but as a writer I just have too much other stuff to do. The easiest thing is without a doubt reading people’s comments on your fics. It makes me smile so much and it’s such a good feeling.

5. What inspires you? Where do you find your muse?

Talking to other people is a great way to spark ideas. I usually get my prompts from Tumblr, which is why I write so many AUs, but I also get inspired to write (my version of) missing scenes from canon. Inspiration can come from anywhere, though, and sometimes it strikes at the weirdest moments.

6. How do you power through writer’s block?

Short answer: I don’t. I sit and type some things in a document and then close without saving. Writer’s block is horrible, especially when you have so many things you want to write. If I have a fic that needs writing I just keep starting it over again from different angles until I find something I’m happy with - I have a whole folder of half-finished fics that are probably never going to see the light of day.

7. Do you have a favorite fic from another author?

Binding Spell by Lemur710 is one of my all time favourites. It’s a missing scene from 1x06 after Magnus and Alec have drinks together ft. the Parabatri. It’s so in character and so sweet and good and I love it so much.

8. What’s something you’re looking forward to in the upcoming season of Shadowhunters?

Garrobane rising! Also domestic Magnus/Alec, obviously. Or battle couple!Malec.

9. Can you give us a sneak peek to what you’re writing next? Or at least any hints to what’s to come?

Currently I’m working on a theatre AU for Shadowhunters AU Mondays Performer Week, and I’ve also got a fic set after 1x11 with Magnus and Izzy on the go. The next chapter of ‘like the stars chase the sun’ is about half way done, too. I have a few Tumblr prompts to get through after that!

10. Do you have advice for anyone who might be interested in writing fan fiction?

Just write! Honestly, the best way to get better at writing is to practice it. Also, read lots of stuff. That way you get to see different styles of writing and you learn what works and what doesn’t. Fandom is a good place to start writing (at least, in my experience, and AO3 seems to be much friendlier than FF.net). Remember you’re writing for yourself and you’re sharing it with other people, so you can write whatever you want to!

11. What trope will you never tire from reading and/or writing?

I’m a sucker for fake dating with absolutely heaps of mutual pining. I know whoever the pairing is will get together in the end but I’m still on the edge of my seat like, “Are they gonna fall in love???” The answer is always yes and it’s glorious.
