Cannibalism. Cannibalism. You could feel the word spoken on its own soaking into the walls and staining the carpet.

I've been watching this show called Wolf, based on a Mo Hayder novel. At first I thought it was a less good Funny Games rip off but I kept watching because the two psychopaths are played by Iwan Rheon and Sacha Dhawan who are two of my favourite weird little guys. Now I'm 4 episodes in and I have no idea what's going on but I'm loving it.

Mystery/Thriller Monday
Tumblr media
Zoe is a detective in Bath, England. Her sister Sally is divorced and raising a teen daughter, and has just started working as a housekeeper for a wealthy man. Then, another teen girl who is friends with Sally’s daughter winds up dead. Oh, and the wealthy man is acting super, super sketchy. The two sisters need to work together to try and solve the case, but, they’re estranged, so, can they solve the crime?
First a very serious warning. A lot of the parts of this book are definitely disturbing. Even the murder was more than I usually read, and the wealthy guy was into disturbing things. So, if that’s not your thing, you’ll probably want to give this a pass.
But, the novel is also fiction, it’s art, and, it’s a really well written plot that totally kept me guessing until the very end. A great read.

Anthony's Stupid Daily Blog (564): Mon 2nd Oct 2023
I used my monthly emergency holiday to go home five hours early. I probably could have saved them for something more important later in the month but I just couldn’t be fucking bothered today. When i got home I started reading Gone by Mo Hayder. It’s about a child who gets kidnapped out of her mothers car while she’s out shopping and the search for her abductor is told from the point of view of the police chief who’s heading up the search. Thankfully it’s not one of those stories where you have to focus all your attention on and you can skim read it while still having a good idea of what’s going on. Frankly with only ten books left to go until the end of my Edgar challenge I’m hoping that they’re all ball-achingly simple to follow. I hope that they are all picture books and they’re about a man trying to locate his missing keys. Later on I rewatched the amazing Evil Dead 2. I still commend Sam Raimi for having the balls to make a completely different kind of movie to its predecessor as doing another straight forward horror movie would’ve struggled to match up to the original but doing making it a comedy horror instantly meant that it wouldn’t be compared to the original and instead be judged on its own merits. I especially love the scene where Ash is trying to shoot his own possessed dismembered hand and I’m sure that Raimi and his co-writers must have been watching Tom and Jerry in preparation for this scene. Evil Dead 2 also contains he second best use of the song Mockingbird in a film in the scene where the old woman in the cellar begins singing it to the teens (the first best use is of course in Dumb and Dumber sing it to the annoyance of the hitman they’ve given a ride to).

RITUAL DE MO HAYDER
ORIGINAL: Ritual 2011 Record 420p ⭐⭐
