Awareness shivers down his spine. Occasionally, if he sits long enough in her presence, something will catch low in his lungs, like a stitch that hasn't healed. He thought granting a geas would be like placing a bit of his magic into the hands of another, but he was wrong. His magic is part of him, and the geas lives as a warm tether between them, humming at a frequency just out of his hearing. Perhaps if he were more liberal with his magic, the sensation would fade—but he is not, and besides, it is not entirely unpleasant to be bound to someone in such a manner.

I love how you are writing the politics and ideas of mortality and fairies vs mortals and everything in your fanfic. It's so deep.

thank you!! I think the whole setup of tfota raises some really meaty questions about nature vs nurture, and I’m not really sure i “answer” those questions in mniwyd, but i certainly do enjoy exploring them further

i think the ghost/taryn dynamic was originally so interesting to me because, had they been main characters, they’d essentially be foils to one another. human raised in the faerie lands vs (half)fae raised in the human lands (though we aren’t told how long he lived there, so i just kind of made it up). who are you, and what is your place, when you straddle those two worlds? are there fundamental, objective differences in the hearts and minds of faeries vs humans? or does it all have to do with culture? but culture itself isn’t just nurture; after all, immortality & the inability to lie would have direct influences on it—but where do you draw that line?

sooo many fun questions to chew on, and the most fun way for me to chew on them was to write them into the narrative

The only thing of note is a book on his bedside table. Crime and Punishment, the cover boasts. A bold drawing of two hands swinging a hatchet takes up most of the space beneath the title. She picks it up to read the blurb—she really ought to read more often than she does—and a slip of paper tumbles to the floor. Not a slip of paper, she realizes as she bends to retrieve it. A polaroid.  Her heart does a low, slow somersault.

it's a midweek surprise 🥳 echoes (of your name inside my mind) is an appendix to my name is whatever you decide, containing scenes that didn't make the final cut during revisions. some scenes just got fully scrapped, but I was still fond of certain others, and this seemed the best way to share them without overloading mniwyd itself. each chapter starts with a note about where it falls in the overall story; this first chapter falls immediately after chapter 12 (aka—before the next unreleased chapter!)

chapter 13 of my name is whatever you decide is up <3

He doesn't know how to explain that moving on, as she proposes, seems somehow synonymous with self-abandonment. He thinks of his younger self: standing at a lakeshore with his father and learning to fish, walking away from a poor man's gravestone, swearing himself into the service of a seemingly noble prince, balancing the heft of a crossbow for the first time, scrubbing at the blood beneath his nails, rationalizing the murder of a child. He cannot leave any of these past selves behind; they dwell beneath his ribcage. But perhaps that's what Taryn is saying, just in different words. They bear the weight of themselves into each new day. The art of living is finding a way to carry that weight.

I have a question about your fanfiction. How much time is passing?

oh okay VERY fair question—I kept a timeline in my draft doc, and I've sprinkled little seasonal indicators throughout the fic, but obviously that's a bit vague. I was considering adding time markers in the beginning notes of each chapter but it slipped my mind. now that you've reminded me, i'll probably do that—but in the meantime, the short answer is: from chapter four (when Aspen is born) to the most recent chapter (ch 12), it's been approximately 3.5 yrs

here's a fun little timeline of the chapters (i'll release an updated one once the full story's been published!). each colored rectangle represents one year.
