2017 Fall-Winter Trend Report.
Berets
Berets are having a major moment this year, as it seems like every major runway had at least one model wearing one, and thats the piece of evidence that this is the hat du jour. Not only has the beret been a key piece for style icons we all know and adore, but it was also a major accessory on recent runways.
Less than eight months ago, it didn't look likely that any French man would ever wear a beret again. They'd long become the opposite of chic – mainly used as a symbol of French satire along with baguettes.
And yet last season, they made a comeback. At Moschino, they were leather and pulled firmly over model heads, while Armanis’s imbued a Che Guevara eclectism. Lanvin opted for the felt version pulled back off the head like a beanie and at Missoni they styled it with streetwear for a modern look.
So how do you wear it now in all its wokeness? Avoid anything overly jaunty or angular so as to steer clear of Parisian parody. This season's beret should be pulled fully over the head, covering half of your ears. It won't be easy to lead the resistance if you're worrying your hat might fall off. If you really can't bear to be parted with the beanie, then pull the beret over the back of your head as you normally would and hope you don't lose it in a gust of wind.
You can nab yourself one for around a tenner, if you want something more authentic, go vintage. It suits literally every hairstyle – curly hair, long hair, short hair… you name itthis is the perfect cool cover up for bad hair days. It’s basically your all-weather style and beauty saviour.
