I am counting down the days until we can finally meet. I pray that you won’t regret befriending me after all this time. The palace is so alive; my trip to your nation is on the lips of every person. Mother is worried about sending me alone, I overheard her speaking with Father about granting me my very own guard. I hope it isn’t Dingani, Father’s most trusted warrior. I have never seen that man smile and he scares me.

I will admit it only to you, my prince. I hope to be by your side for a long time as we lead our nation's side by side, together. What luck has blessed my family to be considered allies to the Min Empire? May many tales be shared of our victories and joys. May the ever-bright sun continue to bathe you in its golden hues.

Sitting in the window of his private room, Yoongi, the Prince of the Min empire rereads the letter in his hand and smiles. Princess Keena, his dear friend for nearly his whole life, will be at the front gates of his palace within a fortnight. A breeze sends his loose blonde strands of hair swaying around his shoulders and face, making Yoongi smile more. The black scales on his jawline catching the light and creating mini rainbows around himself. The princess’ words echo loudly in Yoongi’s mind as he looks to the blue sky above. Wispy white clouds dance and shift into bumpy bunnies and twisted tiger tails. The sun, large and bright, warms the air and Yoongi inhales the scent of azaleas and camellias thick on his tongue like honey.

A knock at the door pulls Yoongi from his thoughts and he clears his throat, calling for whoever to enter his chambers. Setting the letter in his hand back into a small rectangle shaped box covered in a beautiful mother of pearl dragon, Yoongi closes the lid softly and turns his attention to the door as it opens. Red and gold, blinds Yoongi for a moment before he is greeted by his mother, the empress’ warm smile.

“Mother, what brings you here?” Yoongi is quick to stand and offer the woman who birthed him that identical gummy smile that every bloodborne Min carries. Yoongi walks over and offers his mother his arm, happy when she slips her hand in the crook of his elbow.

“Join me in the gardens, it’s a beautiful day.”

Under the cut because it got long again!

Daphne is sort of an accidental Class Clown crossed with a Shrinking Violet. She doesn’t want the attention that comes with being Class Clown...but if her mind is going to be read anyway, she figures she might as well make it funny. The last thing she would want is for her thoughts to be a bother to anyone around her, especially after the incident with Hope. Her sense of humor and the fact that her brother is Nick Wiseman earn her just enough popularity to not be bullied, which is all she wants anyway.

In a coming-of-age movie (Graphne): For this to work I think the age difference would have to be more like one or two years, rather than six, which maybe throws off the Nick and Daphne dynamic a little bit. But anyway. I think this movie is just about Nick (a senior) and Sally scheming to get Daphne a date to Homecoming, shortly after the incident with Hope. They want her to have a night where she can be carefree and happy. From Daphne's point of view, she's suddenly inundated with interest from people who've never shown her any before (and it would be an "investigation" to find out what’s going on, but she figures it out as soon as she brings it up to Gray, the British exchange student living with the Wisemans, who stammers a denial of knowing anything is going on). She's touched by the effort they've put into letting her have a nice night, so she goes to the dance. But she ends up going with somebody who in some way forces her to relive the Hope trauma, maybe in some offhanded remark or something. So she goes home and watches movies with Gray, Nick and Sally join them after not too long, and she ends up having a good time anyway. (The actual romance would still be pretty light, I think.)

In a coming-of-age movie (Glitchne): A somewhat doomed romance. Glitch and Daphne meet just a few weeks before Glitch and Kent are set to leave for college, when Daphne finds Cass and Annie who had gotten loose. (Daphne is maybe a year below them? Or is taking a gap year? But I think the dynamic is closer if they’re older.) Instant sparks, like in Mind Blind. Daph and Glitch have a whirlwind romance with an expiration date. Daphne has to deal with her abandonment issues. Glitch has to weigh this romantic part of his personality against his pursuit of engineering, quietly considering whether or not to stay in Chicago for Daphne. It ends with Daphne doing a dramatic airport run, obviously, but not to ask him to stay; he’s always the one doing the big romantic gestures, so it’s her turn, to let him know that she’ll be okay. And then maybe they’ll reunite at Aeon in a few years.

Teddy is an Academic Athlete, slight emphasis on the athlete. Her thing is being good at everything (but never as good as her brother 🙃). Shades of Lovable Alpha Bitch, but I don’t really see Teddy being extraordinarily popular (...partially because of the Zero thing, but also because she’s, uh, kind of mean lol). An older and more resentful Kristy Thomas from Babysitter’s Club, I guess? She also gives off Nadine vibes, from The Edge of Seventeen, but mainly because of her relationship with Nick.

In a coming-of-age movie: I see Teddy as captain of the co-ed baseball team or something; when they’re down a player, she has to recruit a replacement, and she asks her hot upperclassman neighbor. For whatever reason (Teddy is conniving), Kenna ends up saying yes. They fall in love. Teddy probably shows some kind of growth by skipping out on a baseball game (the only one her father can make it into town for) to help Kenna look for her dogs when they get out.

The more I meditate on the Rite-Kal-Kenna dynamic the more it makes me want to chew glass. something deeply wrong with all of them. Rite cares for Kenna (as siblings do, with distant and removed sympathy but the knowledge there’s ultimately not much he can do except help keep them safe) and cares for Kal (by bossing him around, making sure he eats and sleeps, can and has dragged him to the showers before, has been thrown up on, has held him while he screams and cries about his old regiment and never brings it up because he’s not cruel).

Kal cares for Rite (HIS witch. over time his estimation of Rite grew from typical zealot blind hatred to mounting and terrible realization that not only is Rite smart and capable, he’s kind and a natural leader. He thinks Rite is too good for him. He hates being afraid of losing somebody.) and cares for Kenna (tells them stories, helps calm them when the dream wanes into lucidity and they can’t handle reality, lets them play with his hands or his scriptures, of course this is all to keep the deranged witch under control and he feels absolutely nothing. this is a lie and he would turn anything that threatened them into a fine red mist. Yes he still doesn’t watch his words and his temper gets the best of him and he makes them cry at least once a week, but the apologies have gone from nonexistent to near-instant)

Kenna is broken. Near enough. Pulling together their shattered pieces enough to be a person is exhausting. The dream is comforting and predictable, except when it isn’t. And even with all of that… the belief that these people aren’t real (most of the time)… they care for Rite (their Beloved loves him. Whispers to them about the great things he’s going to. They like being around him because he’s calm, steady, and dependable. They trust him.) they care for Kal (he calls them a freak but still guards them, he humors them when they’re totally detached from reality, when the world is too loud and chaotic he’ll read to them. vitally, he’ll herd them to the psyker barracks if they’ve gone wandering. he really views it as his duty to safeguard what’s left of their fractured mind. Kenna is grateful.)
