The Classroom initiative has come together thanks to key organizations that BFP has worked with over the past decade, bringing together the Millennium Film Workshop and Job Path as partners this inaugural session. Together they’ve launched a “new media” filmmaking class, with an emphasis on cell phone filmmaking, utilizing avant- garde techniques. The screening with feature the films created by the students during the inaugural workshop, as well as a new film documenting the class itself. The filmmakers, programmers, and educators will be in attendance. Brooklyn Fire Proof Classroom created by Kenneth Filmer for Brooklyn Fire Proof. The L Train, After Years of Deliberation, is Staying Open
On Thursday January 3rd, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced that the L train was not completely shutting down for repairs after all. Despite nearly three years of community meetings and general upheaval to prepare for the so-called "L-pocalypse," the governor announced a new plan that would avoid requiring a full closing. While residents of Brooklyn's most populated neighborhoods are celebrating, no one is more excited about the announcement than business owners in Williamsburg, Bushwick, Ridgewood and Bed-Stuy. The MTA was expected to shutter the tunnel for 15 months beginning April 27 to fix subway infrastructure that was damaged by flooding during superstorm Sandy in 2012. Now, the governor says the work can be done in a less disruptive way using a new design that was developed after he toured the tunnel in December with engineers from Columbia and Cornell universities.
The MTA confirmed that the recommendations could be achieved and accepted the proposed changes, reversing years of planning in a matter of hours.
"We have a shared goal in this effort: to make sure New Yorkers are subjected to the least possible disruptions as a result of this necessary repair work," MTA chairman Fernando Ferrer had said. "With the L Project, and all our major projects, we’re consistently looking for new and innovative methods, and the guidance and recommendations we have received today will ease the strain on customers and help us ensure we are providing a consistently reliable service."
This of course means that Brooklyn Fire Proof, conveniently located right next to the Morgan L Train stop, will be operating at full capacity for the remainder of the year, without the expected MTA hiccups.

Introducing Brooklyn Fire Proof Classroom
We've been working on this for the longest time, but we're finally moving forward on Brooklyn Fire Proof Classroom. Brooklyn Fire Proof Classroom is a new program where we'll use our on-site facilities to put together film educators and professionals with a variety of organizations to provide students who otherwise might not be in film programs.
Our first foray into the program pairs the storied non-profit experimental film teaching center the Millennium Film Workshop with JobPath, who places adults with developmental disabilities into employment, and to utilize their skills within the community. The class is a focus of filmmaking with New Media, mainly cell phones and laptops, with a focus on art cinema.
There will also be an integrated art show, with many of the same students, who are part of Job Path's Art//Division program–and opening on February 1st–co-curated by our sister company, BFP Creative.
A screening of the films created will happen later in February as well.
Stay tuned for way more details about this. The first session of the program was a great, positive experience.
Built in the DIY spirit, Brooklyn Fire Proof Stages is dedicated to providing a low stress and productive environment, encouraging the creative pursuit of both independent and commercial art. With 17,000 square feet of full-service film, television, and photography sound stages, we are a New York State Qualified Production Facility, with on site grip and electric rentals, a cafe and bar, an event space, and a multitude of interior and exterior locations. Our stage crew is dedicated to providing a friendly, full-service experience to all productions, at all budgets.

In June 2018, KHLOARIS programmed, set up and hosted the film@segment of the Freak Flag Fest at Brooklyn Kitchen. The fest was a multi-day, multi-level affair and featured dozens of experimental music acts, including the debut of Mike Watt’s Afternoon Freak (also featuring Matt Mottel and Danny Frankel). There was gourmet food, art installations and more. Our films were programmed around the music acts. We focused on a sort of weird history of New York underground cinema, and had a cross-section of old guard@and new guard avant-garde, with some live 16mm projection and cult/trash film. Here, you’re seeing a crowd watching a new Nick Zedd music video for our friend and frequent collaborator @nylonothropho Our program also featured Troma (and Toxie!) on hand to do a matinee of “Terror Firmer,” as well as Lily Jue Sheng, Julie Orlick, Mike Diana and TFG, Amanda Justice, Zoe Camina and Elyssa Oliver, Dylan Greenberg, Zach Strum and more. We also had two weekend-long large installations via the Horror Boobs and the Millennium Film Workshop. Our friends at Mono No Aware helped out with some 16mm projection equipment. It was a fun event and we may be cooking up some similar things in the future. @nickzedd @dylanmarsgreenberg @j.r.orlick @horrorboobs @mfw1966 @mononoawarefilm @zzzstrum @talibamnyc @wattfrompedro @bardenmuse @zoealiceart @thebklynkitchen @lovidlovid @freakflagfest @boiledmikediana @johnnychiba @tromateam @badtechno @lloyd.kaufman #freak #freaflag #khloaris #filmfestival #brooklynkitchen #nickzedd #mikediana #horrorboobs #amandajustice #dylangreenberg #lilyjuesheng #mononoaware #millenniumfilmworkshop #deathvirgins #troma #toxicavenger #toxie #terrorfirmer #filmfestival #mikewatt #experimentalfilm #trashfilm #filminstallation #screening #weirdmovies #weirdart #productioncompany #screeningcollective #16mm (at Tiamat) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0T4F9tF0Oi/?igshid=1vw1j3l3ntp13

#Repost @freakflagfest ——————————- Freak Flag Fest starts tonight! As far as I know, it’s the only festival in New York this weekend where you can see a Troma feature film - with the Toxic Avenger in attendance - that will be followed by the live debut of Mike Watt’s new group. Is there any other fest having a gourmet Father’s Day brunch on site, next to a VHS trailer park where you can chill on a sofa and watch trashy VHS trailers and an art installation with live piranha feedings? Come out for 3 solid days of amazing music, film, art, and food. @thebklynkitchen @tromateam @lloydkaufman @wattfrompedro @talibamnyc @horrorboobs @millennium_film_journal @mfw1966 @lovidlovid @thefoodballer @bardenmuse #troma #toxicavenger #vhs #vcr #fathersday #brunch #fishfeeding #khloaris #mikewatt #afternoonfreak #millenniumfilmworkshop (at The Brooklyn Kitchen)
