Oh my god YES I could go hours and hours about Sikhs and bollywood and Sikhs in Bollywood
For an industry that's so centred around Punjabis and Sikhs and romanticism of your typical Punjabi life you think Bollywood would do a bit of research but nooo.
Non sikh actors are made to put on the pagg (see: Akshay Kumar in Kesari, Singh is King, Singh is Bling (because Sikhs can only be martyrs or a dumb comic relief), Ranbir Kapoor in Rocket Singh, Sunny Deol in Jo Bole So Nihal (I have no idea wtf this movie is about), Farhan Akhtar in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Vicky Kaushal in Sardar Udham, Aamir Khan in Laal Singh Chadda, although those last three do break the stereotypes Bollywood holds for Sikhs so like they're achieving the bare minimum)
And the irony here is that one Diljit Dosanjh interview I was watching (or read about, not sure) where he said he doesn't take on Bollywood roles that ask him to take the pagg off like I'm sorry you wanna have non sikh actors put it on but then an actual Sikh shows up you're like 'hm take that off thnx'
-that one anon who sent you that one ask this morning
oh my god yes i know exactly what you mean as a tamil person about bollywood bastardifying our culture 💀 but so much of this stuff flew under my radar, i didn't notice it was this bad?? it's so gross i never realised how often you guys are basically used as props for some political/optical agenda and then dropped when it comes to basically anything involving your actual wellbeing good god

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag ( ‘Run Milkha Run’) (2013)
The true story of the "Flying Sikh" - world champion runner and Olympian Milkha Singh -- who overcame the massacre of his family, civil war during the India-Pakistan partition, and homelessness to become one of India's most iconic athletes.
I saw a little story about Milkha Singh on Partition Museum’s Instagram so I Googled him and came across this film. What a great find! Amazing cinematography, the lead actor, Farhan Akhter looked like a runner, his transformation was amazing, very moving and inspirational story. This is a fantastic sports drama. I highly recommend it.
The story also deals with the awful and heart breaking events in 1947 when India was Partitioned on religious grounds and millions lost their lives or became homeless. This is a must watch.
It was also very emotional and had me in tears a few times.
Great songs too! I have added them on my Spotify. Definitely check it out, I cannot recommend it enough!

My Arty Plot: An Inherited Trait
Tumblr media
Now, this is something I've inherited from my school. I used to draw when I was in class 4th. I even joined an art club as well as a private art class. But, the teachers in the art class were just too advanced for my level, and they're not good behavior-wise. So I left. So when reality starts biting me in the face, I'd lost all my interest in art. Not to mention, the last time I invested in art was in 8th Class. And that too was because of the necessity and not on interests (Thanks school for enforcing it).
Fast forward to Class 12th, my history teacher (Yes, I took arts. Sue me) gave an external assignment. The history subject has three books explaining three major eras (ancient, medieval, and modern India). The said assignment divided my section into three groups based on roll calls. (Back then, the arts section had the strength of 20 or 22)
I wanted to opt for the Partition of India because it was modern history and, I was strong in the chapter. Unfortunately, my group wanted to choose the Buddha chapter. So I had to relent and choose the Buddha chapter which, later became my best choice.
Now I don't think the chapter is terrible. Sure it was interesting. It's just that I'm not strong in the chapter. And the last time I gave my project, I admit it was terrible. My history teacher chewed me out for that because I used sketch pens to write my assignment. So to impress her this time, I browsed the internet to know more about Buddha.
Tumblr media
And wouldn't you know it, I found a Buddha manga. It was drawn by the legendary Japanese artist Osamu Tezuka. He was the "Father of Manga" as well as the Japanese equivalent of Walt Disney. Thanks to the manga, I was able to draw some Buddha sketches. Even the external teacher found it intriguing. He gave my group good marks for the project because everyone participated, and their contributions were fantastic. Albeit one of my sketches looked like Late Milkha Singh running in the Movie Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Unfortunately, none of my sketches are with me since we have to submit the projects. I still regret it to this day because I felt I should've taken some pictures.
Tumblr media
Since it was 12th grade, I didn't have time to draw anything because I was busy with my Psychology retests, pre-boards, and eventually the boards. When all of that ended, I focused on my CLAT exams and my college admissions. So I barely had any time to draw. So when my Aunt from the US bought The Last of Us, I invested myself in playing this game. Long story short, it was a nostalgic fest because while playing the game, it reminded me of the waning days of my school.
So when I read its comic, "The Last of Us: American Dreams." It compelled me to draw Ellie, one of the main characters of the comic and the game. The Ellie drawings were the first drawings I made post-school. And the day I drew those, I got a call from college accepting my admission. So it compelled me to draw more during my college years.
During the pandemic era, I've been using my drawings to publish my articles on Youth Ki Awaaz, LiveWire (The Wire's Editorial), TOI's Readers' Blogs, Tumblr, Medium, and so on. The aim was to give my drawing chops the recognition it deserves. And I'm still drawing, not only to publish alongside my articles but to kill my time in this dreaded pandemic.
Tumblr media
I know my habit of drawing (and writing) won't last long when my college ends (my college is ending soon). After that, it's the real world facing time. But yeah, if I managed to have enough time to vent out my stress and frustration in this competitive time, I'll try to draw (Somehow).

Few critics, few including Rediff ones whom I look for some good writing, have rated low to BMB. The reason they give is that movie lacks coherence and clarity. Really? I think they should only rate Hollywood movies because whoever thinks this movie is no good does not know what Hindi cinema is. Farhan has done an awesome job, and if I say awesome then it is not for his physique and dialogue delivery but for the transformation, he has gone to become Milkha Singh. We as an audience witness the physical stress and labor that an athlete as likes of Milkha Singh undergo to become a ‘flying Sikh’. Hindi cinema celebrates the life of this living legend with songs and drama and music. Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra has done a decent job, still; I fell he could have done a lot better especially in the scenes of Milkha’s childhood memories. His attempt of giving the movie an epic convention seriously affected the narrative portion. However, all this can be sided by the grandeur of Farhan’s effort. I would like to mention a statement of one of the rediff users who wrote against critics who are undermining the effect of this movie: «note that 400mtrs is a very difficult race to run. it is at the border of quick races and long jogs. after partition India did not have either the experience nor the infra to produce runners for 400mtrs. So Milkha was a true champion in every sense. If critics pull films like these down for abstract reasons

5 Unforgettable Sports Films In Bollywood
Bollywood movies are popular for romance and drama. The industry has also produced some of the best sports movies that are unforgettable. These movies have a storyline that combines a perfect combination of drama, romance, action, and adventure.
Here is a list of five sports movies in Bollywood that are evergreen.
1. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992):
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar tops our list of unforgettable sports movies in which Aamir Khan (Sanjay) plays a leading role. In the movie's first half, Sanjay is shown as a reckless boy who evolves as a winner of a cycling event. Throughout the movie, Sanjay is seen trying to woo Devika (Pooja Bedi). But when he sees his brother, Ratan, in a problem, he decides to take the reins. Ratan is shown dedicated to sports, who eventually meet with an accident that puts his cycling talent on a halt. Aamir decides to participate in the event. It is at this point in the story when he comes up as a hero.

2. Dangal (2016):
Dangal is a must-watch movie who love to hear Haryanvi twang. The real essence of India is shown in the movie through the perspective and life of former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan). The movie brings to us a story of Phogat and his ambition to make his daughters wrestlers. The movie has family drama, floods of emotions for wrestling, and real action. In Dangal, we get to see the fatherly image of Aamir Khan and how he tries to ensure the safety of his daughters Geeta  (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Babita (Sanya Malhotra) in wrestling, a male dominate game. The movie also depicts the arduous journey of Commonwealth Games winners Geeta and Babita.
3. Iqbal (2005)
Iqbal is a movie about a deaf and dumb boy who makes his way to the Indian Cricket team. Of course, some obstacles stop him from achieving his dream. But his coach's sheer hard work and dedicated efforts get him to a most deserving place in the cricket team. The movie has a catching story and amazing acting of Shreyas Talpade, who connects well with the inspiring cricketers through his role of Iqbal.
4. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013):
The movie needs no introduction. It is but, of course, the story of an Indian athlete, Milkha Singh. In the movie, we see Farhan Akhtar as Milkha Singh and his struggle from childhood to winning a championship in Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. The movie moves in flashbacks, showing Milkha Singh in his early childhood when he lost his parents during the India-Pakistan partition and his journey as an athlete. It is a real like story of a boy who lost his love but conquered his dream.
5. Chak De! India (2007):
Chak De! India is a realistic, lively, exciting, and inspirational sports film. The film is about India's much-ignored national sport of hockey, a female hockey team that is relegated to the sidelines, a dash of patriotism, team spirit, and, finally, the spirit of triumph over adversity. The film is also inspired by the real-life experiences of former hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi. In the film, Shahrukh as the coach is excellent. Chak De! India boasts a simple script, an interesting screenplay, skilful execution, and natural performances.
India Bollywood cinema provides its audience with a bag full of entertainment in all genres. It has produced many sports movies based on the real-life of Indian players. In each movie, we get to see a social situation where the hero has to break the taboo and come out as a winner.
