From shame to not sorry. Miley Cyrus about her cover for Vanity Fair in 2008, 2018 and 2023
Tumblr media
In 2008, 15-year-old Miley Cyrus appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair. Then known for her role as Hannah Montanna in the Disney production, the teenager posed with bare shoulders for photographer Annie Leibovitz. This started an avalanche of controversy over the fact that young Miley was naked.
A week after the article was published, she apologized, saying: For Vanity Fair, I was so honored and thrilled to work with Annie. I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed. (...) The pictures of me on the Internet were silly, inappropriate shots. I appreciate all the support of my fans, and hope they understand that along the way I am going to make mistakes and I am not perfect. I never intended for any of this to happen and I am truly sorry if I have disappointed anyone.

In 2018, after 10 years after the controversial session, Miley wrote a short but blunt comment on this topic on Twitter. It sounded: IM NOT SORRY (you can see the tweet here).

15 years after the publication of Leibovitz photos in August this year Miley shared behind-the-scenes details from the photo shoot. She talks about it in a video posted to her TikTok account, part 15 of her Used To Be Young series.
She said: Everyone knows the controversy of the photo, but they don’t really know the behind the scenes (...) My family was on set. This was the first time I ever wore red lipstick because Pati Dubroff, who did my makeup, thought that that would be another element that would divide me from Hannah Montana. This image of me is the complete opposite of the bubblegum pop star that I had been known for being, and that's what was so upsetting.

Miley also congratulated the creative team behind the photo shoot and said they made some really great choices.
Of course, regardless of Miley's position, there is still a discussion about showing and using erotic images of young girls.
