The Usual | venom Snake x Reader

Duh they like each other.

Does this count as angst? I don’t think.

The Usual

The blue sky above was riddled with soft, puffy clouds and a shy sun whose rays peeked out with glee, creating a lovely, tranquil sight for those who gazed up at the atmosphere throughout the hours of the day. There was a certain calm that came as it was paired with the water’s soft, background sound, that, in a way served as a lullaby of it’s own to many of the MB personnel.

At the moment, (f/n)’s (e/c) colored eyes gazed up, the woman holding many secrets, many unsaid words that were thoughts locked in her chest, withheld from even her closest confidant, who by then had found her sight just as mesmerizing as she seemed to believe the canvass above her was.

She seemed so thoughtful , and while he would gladly listen to those thoughts, he'd never pry, never force her to tell him anything she didn't want to because she did the same for him.

- And he had plenty that he couldn't speak.

So, he stood by, waiting, ready to give her comfort, doing just the same as she did for him, perhaps with less of a charming effect, but with the same kindness intended.

Calmly, with quiet steps to not disturb her peace, Snake crossed over the platform, reaching her in little time, just as she seemed to grow weary of the silence she'd surrounded herself with.

She then turned, and as she did, she ran into him, the look of surprise she wore quickly overpowered by her grand smile,

"Snake!" she gasped, nearly jumping out of her skin with a slight spook, but still having it in her to shine brightly afterward, "When did you get back?" she asked with that dazzling expression he was always grateful to witness.

His head tilted down just a bit, his chin tucking into his chest slightly as he closed his eyes and a smile of his own came into view, the rather sheepish expression giving her all the more reason to keep her own grin up.

"-Not that long," he told her, remembering how she'd promised to be at the LZ upon his arrival, which she wasn't.

Admittedly, he'd been disappointed because that was the face he searched for, it’d been something he anticipated, but then again, it wasn't like he wanted her to put everything on hold for him.

She’d said so playfully, so maybe she’d only been teasing.

Maybe.

Besides, it wasn't like he wanted to be her center, because he knew what that meant, what that would become.

For a man like him, such a connection was nearly impossible.

And for a woman like her, such a man meant inevitable pain, and suffrage.

They were friends, confidants.

They were just ... close.

So, there was nothing more to expect than what was already given.

Even if sometimes all he wanted was to be around her.

Even if all she wanted was to do the same.

He didn’t ask why she hadn’t been out there like she said she would, instead, he was concerned over what brought her out and made her gaze so whimsical, so thoughtful.

"What's on your mind?" he asked her, wanting to know what she'd share, and the question made her eyes avert.

'You...' she thought to herself, feeling warm, feeling inspired.

- And the smile that took over was different from the one before.

It was much less excited, and much more reserved, yet held a linger of something endearing in it that had his heart swell.

he took notice that the times he asked that, that particular smile formed, but again, he didn't pry, because it was something locked in her chest, something he was afraid to truly discover because it meant demanding more.

How she wanted to tell him, how she wanted to say just that simple word to his question every time he asked, but like a coward, one afraid of what would come after, she shook her head in silence.

Painful, awful silence that ate her whole with upset.

A bemused chuckle left her before she looked at him with eyes that certainly held some sort of sadness, sadness she dare not voice,

"Ah,” she breathed, “the usual," she answered back.
