The use of English shorthand and typewriters expanded towards the end of the 19th century in clerical work in the major cities of the subcontinent. The use of shorthand in Indian languages, however, developed not in the context of office work but to meet the requirements of the new public sphere, particularly the quick notation of public speeches for reporting in newspapers. This led to the invention of new speed scripts, atitvarene lihiṇyāchī paddhatī (very speedy writing) or laghulekhan (shorthand) in Marathi, which relied heavily on Pitman and Munson’s English shorthand. Arguably the first use was in 1874 by RB Gunjikar [...]. Gajananbhau Vaijya, an English shorthand writer and reporter with the Indian Statesman, invented another speed script expressly for the quick notation of speeches [...]. Notably, Indian-language shorthand remained in the sphere of handwriting, as typewriters for non-Latin scripts did not become widespread in the subcontinent until the mid 20th century. [...]

[I]t is actually Bhujangrao Mankar, inventor of a third shorthand script with the book Laghulekhankalā (1897), who announced himself on the title page as the creator of Marathi and Gujarati shorthand. Mankar was a well-known English shorthand reporter for the press and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Bombay for all manner of political meetings in the early 20th century. [...]

As Bernard Bate noted, Tamil shorthand came into its own when the colonial government attempted to acquire written transcripts of possibly seditious speeches during the Swadeshi movement.

In Bombay, too, shorthand found widespread application in CID surveillance with the growth in nationalist meetings and activity in the 1920s. Sub-inspectors could learn Marathi shorthand as an optional subject in the Central Police Training School; the usual practice was to pass a test in the office and regularly test for speed.

In the trial of the Ali brothers in Karachi following the Khilafat movement, speeches by Mohamed Ali and Shaukat Ali were entered as evidence of their seditious activity.

Similarly, charges against Communist leaders SA Dange, RS Nimbkar, and others in the Meerut conspiracy case (1929–33) were also based on their public speeches.

The cross-examination of witnesses turned on the accuracy of the transcripts and the methods used to obtain them and provides a rich window into the work of memory, notation, and translation involved in producing a speedy verbatim transcript of a public speech, and the issues of legibility, authenticity, and transparency that linked scribe, script, and language to state surveillance.

Police reporters usually translated the shorthand transcripts of speeches in various languages into English longhand as soon as possible. In Karachi the Ali brothers’ Urdu speeches were recorded in Urdu shorthand. In Belgaum in June 1921, however, sub-inspectors of the Pune CID took down their Urdu and English speeches in Marathi shorthand. During a meeting in Bagalkot, also in northern Karnataka, Shaukat Ali’s speech in Urdu was orally translated sentence by sentence into Kannada as he spoke [...]. There was thus much processing of sound, meaning, and sign across languages, scripts, memories, and individuals, all at high speed. [...] The inspector [...] Deshpande mentioned a critical aspect of Pitman-based shorthand writing: since the signs matched specific sounds, he did not pay much attention to the content of the speech; he just noted down the sounds as best he could, even if he didn’t know the meanings of words. Gaps between sounds and meaning, it would appear, were filled in either during transcription through memory recall or by the CID itself. [...] These practices of notation, translation, and judicial discourse grappled with a spectrum of textual reproduction of oral utterances, from gist to verbatim.

Shri Venkateshwara University/VGI Meerut commemorated the World Environment Day with a Grand Plantation Drive & Environment Awareness Rally.

Along with the UP Forest Department, we hosted a seminar wherein the speakers appealed to plant more trees and make India polythene free.

The Group Chairman Dr Sudhir Giri, Pro Chancellor Dr Rajiv Tyagi, Senior IFS Officer Mr SP Singh, & the Forest Department Senior Police Officer Mr. Amit Rathi inaugurated the event by offering flowers to Goddess Saraswati.

In collaboration with the UP Forest department, the Venkateshwara Group planted over 5000 plants in both the campuses & the national highway & pledged to protect & promote them.

These included Banyan, Parijat, Tulsi, Gooseberry, Neem, Jamun, Rudraksh and many types of plants.

On this occasion, we felicitated over a dozen constables, forest guards, rangers, DFOs, & Inspectors by presenting them a shawl & memento.

The Group Chairman, Dr Sudhir Giri, reiterated it’s a wonderful coincidence that today is the birthday of our honourable CM, Mr. Yogi Adityanath.

To achieve PM’s mission of a clean India Green India, we should make it a habit to present plants on social occasions such as marriage & anniversary. This way we play our part in nation development.

Senior IFS Mr. SP Singh asserted the Venkateshwara Group is renowned for offering quality education & its social obligations. In this context, the UP forest department has aligned with Venkateshwara Group and planted over 5000 trees to improve the environment.

A 25-year-old pregnant woman and her 5-year-old son were found dead inside bed boxes at their home in India. The woman's husband made the shocking discovery after he broke open the house which was locked from the outside, police said.

The incident was reported in Meerut, a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, on Monday night. The man, identified as Sandip Kumar, reported to police that his wife identified by first name Shikha and his son Rukansh were missing when he came back home.

As the house was found locked from the outside, Kumar, in the presence of his neighbors, broke the lock and entered his house to make the gruesome discovery, Times Now News reported.

The bodies of victims were found stuffed in bed boxes in different rooms. The hands of both the victims were tied up, and they had a piece of cloth stuffed in their mouths, a senior investigating officer Rohit Singh Sajwan was cited as saying by NDTV.

Police believe that the duo was murdered by strangulation sometime during the day before their bodies were stuffed in the bed boxes. Meanwhile, the bodies were sent for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police officials said they have started an investigation into the case.

The deceased woman was eight months pregnant, and the couple had been married for almost seven years, police said. The relatives said they suspect that some acquaintances are involved in the crime. They also reported that jewelry and cash are missing from the house.

A 30-year-old woman in India was arrested in April for allegedly murdering her husband and dumping his body in a sack. The suspect, identified as Laxmi Devi, reportedly murdered her husband Bharat Lal after she was fed up with his violence against her and their two children.

An investigation began after police found the victim's body stuffed in a jute bag dumped outside a park near the house. During interrogation, Devi eventually admitted that she strangled her husband after drugging him and dumped his body with the help of her 13-year-old son.

Hashimpura Massacre

It was the 22nd of May 1987, Ramzan and Friday, just like today, when 'secular' India's most shameful and horrendous custodial kil-ling took place at #Hashimpura. That day, after the Friday prayers, in the midst of the ongoing Meerut riots, some 600-700 Muslims..

were dragged from their homes by army personnel, CRPF, PAC, and police and were made to sit on the footpath near Gulmarg Talkies. — The young and the strong among them were chosen, loaded in a PAC truck URU 1493, and taken to Upper Ganga Canal in Murad Nagar..

and later to Makanpur in Ghaziabad only to be shot cold-blooded and thrown into the canal. — This was totally an anti-muslim crime by the state, though the documented facts are known to everyone, three points are worth mentioning:

A) On May 23, 1987, at Meerut Circuit House, the next day after the massæcre, there was a meeting attended by Veer Bahadur Singh, the CM, Daya Shankar, the DGP, SK Mukherjee, the IG, Nasim Zaidi, the Ghaziabad DM, Vibhuti Narain, the Ghaziabad SP and other senior officials.

There were discussions that can the bodies of 42 be thrown away in the canal just like Malyana, never to be found? Could the 3 survivors under police protection also die? Would anyone expect justice from them? #HashimpuraMassacre

B) One of the survivors Zulfiqar Nasir had a press conference in Delhi with Syed Shahabuddin and Subramanyam Swami, narrating the nightmare he went through. There was a shameless press brief the next day addressed by Meerut DM RS Kaushik, SSP Girdhari Sharma, nd frmr SP VKB Nair.

Not only did they claim that no massacre happened at Hashimpura but also that no one with the name of Zulfiqar ever lived in Hashimpura. Shouldn't they have been punished too for propagating blatant lies. #HashimpuraMassacre

3) There were three 'Sarkari Musalmans' sitting at the vital position throughout the investigation. Just to show the Indianness in them, they did very little to ensure Justice. Syed Khalid Rizvi, who headed the CID failed to link the role of Major Satish Kaushik whose brother..

Prabhat Kumar, a RSS terrœrist, was killed the previous day; who was present at Hashimpura during the whole incident. Mr Nasim Zaidi who later became chief Election commissioner failed to act responsibly and tell the outside world about the heinous crimes.

And Ms Mohsina Kidwai, the then MP of Meerut who later became the General Secretary of AICC, not only refused to ensure medical care to one of the injured survivors but kept silent about the gory crimes.

— Hashimpura, like the Bihar killings of 1946, Nellie of 1983, Bhagalpur of 1989, Delhi Pogrom of 1984 and 2020, Muzaffarnagar of 2013, Gujarat pogrom of 2002, and numerous others remain a disgraceful instance of the merciless and barbaric use of brute state force..
