Deep Cover and YONAH spoilers!
First impressions time! (Looking at this translation for Deep Cover, this one for YONAH). Btw I actually haven't listened to Deep Cover yet because it's not out in my time-zone rip.
Add plagiarism to the list of crimes committed by Milgram prisoners lol. I actually love the Undercover callback it's fantastic! And the diss track? Eminem got nothing on wolf girl over here.
But this does raise the question of how much she actually knows about the murders. Like, she talks about very specific things such as Shidou being a "priceless stealer", so she has to know something. I saw someone bring up she may have been spying on all the interrogations, and I have to assume that's the case because how else would that happen.
I'm really interested in the fact Kotoko seems to want everyone to be Unforgiven, though.
Which one do you pick? I want unforgiven
And the fact at the end she lists all the T1 innos and insults them, as if she wants them to be Unforgiven too. Like, I get it, she enjoys feeling like she's dealing out justice, but what. I hope the MV clarifies a bit more because right now she just sounds unhinged. Which is fun! I like characters who are just unrepentantly evil. But I get the feeling there's something more going on. We already know some of her motivations from HARROW, but you have to wonder if they've evolved in some way during her time in Milgram.
Speaking of the MV, my prediction is not only that the other prisoners are gonna be there, which I have to assume will happen-
(Please show Amane as a monster please show Amane as a monster please show Amane as a monster)
-Ehem. Apologies. I don't know what possessed me there for a moment.
You wanna know the wildest prediction I have for the MV? (Which is most likely going to be wrong don't get too excited) It think every prisoner's crime will be related to one of the crimes we saw in HARROW, and perhaps others we'll get introduced to in Deep Cover.
Shidou: “UNDER” Unsalvagable Priceless stealer.
Probably the guy that stole a bunch of luxury bikes, since it fits the idea of stealing from a lot of people.
Kazui: “UNDER” I stay hidden, fake prosperity and greed.
Either Mikio Oshii (the guy from the alleway), who pretended to be a bank employee to steal money, or the "It's me" scammers, who called people, pretended to be a family member and asked for money.
Fuuta: You’re being a jerk. You’re being a jerk.
Either the "It's me" scams, or the guy who took upskirt photos, because they're connected to phones.
Haruka: “UNDER” It’s a stupid dependency. Muu: “UNDER” Unchanging. A spinning queen’s game. Mahiru: I still like you though, still like you, it’s difficult.
One of these would be the paper bag robbery done by two people. I don't know about this one, but I think it kinda works.
Mikoto: I really don’t remember, I really don’t, it’s so bad.
It could be the guy who took upskirt photos since he said he did it because of stress from work, but knowing Kotoko, I wouldn't be surprised if she connects him and John to the serial killer in the white hoodie. She does not like them.
I'm not sure about the rest of them. Again, that's just a silly prediction, I'm not expecting it to happen, I'm just putting it out there because if it does happen I will feel like a God lol.
About YONAH, I'm slightly disappointed we didn't get much about Kotoko herself, but it's still really good! I think it's fun that she sorta encouraged Es to Forgive at the end of TASK and now she's like "yo your weak-ass needs to stop forgiving people."
But I do want to say, I'm surprised at the amount of people who are shocked Kotoko wanted to attack Amane. Like, we even had that one timeline conversation when she said she wouldn't treat Amane differently just because she's a child. I thought we had an universal understanding that the only reason Amane wasn't attacked is because of the Kazui ceasefire and John's time-wasting fight (and out of universe, because we can't have a character dying in T1). I guess I was wrong though. Anyways, Worst Girl enjoyers are rejoicing right now. Not gonna lie, this is making me like Kotoko more and more by the second. I don't know what that says about me.
Anyways, what do you think Kotoko's percentage will look like on the day the voting opens? Not her verdict since... well. Like, I was always expecting her to Guilty sweep, but what we have so far doesn't really help her. I would not be surprised if she ends up easily beating Muu as the widest Guilty margin. Hell, do you think it can beat Shidou as the most decisive verdict in general? I think it's unlikely, since Shidou got nearly 82% inno this trial which is insane. But honestly, unless Deep Cover MV does some insane leg-work, Kotoko might get more than 82% Guilty. I think it'd be funny.
Not like I'm gonna stop it. Sorry inno truthers, I highly respect your commitment to wolf girl and fully respect the decision, but I feel like Not Forgiving her this trial would be for the best. Still, I'm open to having my mind change when the MV drops. Take care!

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE JAILBREAK MEGA MIX! While it's still the anniversary day! I was doing something for the rest of today but wanted to discuss my first run through the song.
You could say this was my dream come true since it was a Mikoto Muu mix for a small bit. The instrumental of MeMe overlapping with the beginning of Muu's final part. It was great.
I'm also lovingly dragging Star along for this ride.
Okay I was tired when I wrote this. So, I went back to edit it for clarity! This is hopefully the last edit I'll do on this.
To start off I believe the songs, their placements, and the way they overlap show the relationships or associations between the characters.
Let me explain.
First, we have Es the guard that we started with and technically our proxy within Milgram. Basically, Es is the one that connects us the audience to Milgram so of course they'd go first.
Next, we have Kotoko the one who's most firmly aligned with Es. Their mentalities have become a bit similar after trial one as well. Given some of Es' statements towards Futa in his voice drama. I hope he isn't also harsh on Mahiru.
However, this is where it gets tricky or fun depending on your view, I think it's fun.
Kotoko leads into Haruka. Someone who has said like Muu but for different reasons he doesn't think any of the prisoners are like him. This mix could be a subtle way to tell us who the prisoners are most like and impacted by. I believe Haruka comes after Kotoko because she is the one to leave the biggest impact on him but the prisoner, he's most like comes after him.
This is why bits of his song go into Mahiru's but the overlap between Harrow and Weakness is more subtle. No instrumental from Harrow or anything just Kotoko singing,
"I want to be drowning in the knowledge that I'm right." while Haruka is floating in that water.
However, this line could relate directly to one of Haruka's lines in Weakness,
"I cried, I screamed, I wanted to be a pitied and loved weakling. I was in denial; I was in denial I just had to make sure."
When this comes to representing the relationship between Haruka and Kotoko while they haven't had the best interactions and Haruka is downright afraid of her, they've started talking. Plus, upon realizing that Haruka was Innocent Kotoko began to treat him a bit more nicely.
21/12/15    (Kotoko’s Birthday)
Haruka: Ah…… H-happy birthday, Kotoko-san.
Kotoko: ……thanks. You’ve definitely changed a bit. Do you remember before? You could barely even talk to me.
Haruka: I-is that so? Now that you mention it, I, I maybe have got a bit better since then. ……m-maybe I’ve got more used to being around people. There’s other people here who are interested in me, and, um, in particular Mu-san pays a lot of notice to me…… I… I’m enjoying myself here……
Kotoko: ……hmm. It’s just a theory I have right now, but I get the feeling the outcome of Milgram’s judgements are having some influence on our mental state. Well, I only noticed because I happened to be last up though. Good for you, then. This must mean that you’re fine. ……I’ll accept those birthday wishes.
Muu and Haruka don't really discuss Kotoko's actions as bad or good. To be frank I don't really think Haruka discussed them at all. So, they're both neutral leaning towards positive with her. Taking that into consideration, him coming up after her makes sense.
However, since the line Kotoko sings before Haruka's song can be related to one of his own and was directly related to the visuals of his song we're in a fun but ambiguous situation. One where either Kotoko or Mahiru could be the prisoner most like Haruka. However, I still think in this case the prisoner most like him is Mahiru.
Because unlike with Harrow where only the line Kotoko sings overlaps. The instrumentals of Weakness and This is How to Be in Love With You merge near the end before Haruka finishes off his part singing,
"Even if I keep trying it, it's broken right away. The things that aren't here and unneeded things... Is it still living somewhere?"
(Lol, this isn't my point it's Stars she typed it up on my computer using this great thing called Parsec now for a word from our spons-dies. God wish I was paid for this I'm just excited. Okay take it away.)
This parallels well with, "I guess we can just say that this feeling is happiness/I can't stop feeling like there's something missing."
(And that was Star's point please applaud~ A little louder just kidding!)
I forgot to add my feelings on Mahiru and Haruka's overlap in my rush to get to Yuno. There are also very direct comparisons that can be made between the two through their voice dramas. They both underestimate and speak down about their own capabilities. However, when given the opportunity, being met with patience, or having a straightforward goal to work towards they're likely to better complete it.
Also, just as Mahiru judged Mikoto immediately after one encounter to be flippant and have cheater energy. Haruka pretty much judged Kotoko as scary off the bat and continued to avoid her until he'd become more comfortable through due to his verdict and other prisoners taking time to interact with him and pick up the ball whenever he dropped. For example, how Mikoto told Kotoko Es was calling for her but neither of them confronting or reprimanding Haruka for not being able to communicate that to her and basically ignoring the task Es gave him.
They also have both requested frivolous items for not only personal enjoyment but to better create the atmosphere they were seeking. Haruka the water floaty during the summer and Mahiru the futons for the sleep over.
Now we get to the overlap between This Is How To Be In Love With You and Umbilical. This one is fun in so many ways. First it highlights Yuno and Mahiru's give and take relationship within Milgram. Something touched on within Yuno's birthday conversation last year.
22/09/02 (Yuno’s Birthday)
Mahiru: ……no, I’m fine. As long as I don’t move too much I don’t even feel any pain. Sorry for making you worry.
Yuno: Oh, really? That’s good then. Mahiru-san, if there’s anything you want then just ask. It’s not like it’s a huge burden, I can just ask for it along with my own stuff.
Mahiru: Ok…… I’m fine for now. Sorry, for making you worry. Ah, Yuno-chan…… Today’s your birthday, right? Happy birthday.
Yuno: ………… Haha, thanks. Thank you, but y’know. Is it really ok for you to be saying that to me when you’re in that situation? ……you really aren’t suited for Milgram, huh, Mahiru-san.
"Ring, ring I'm calling you in the middle of the night."
This line overlapping with Umbilical could could reference Mahiru relying/calling on Yuno to get her things within Milgram now that her privileges have been restricted. It can also allude to what some including myself have speculated Yuno was doing on the staircase making a phone call.
Now here's the kicker the thing that makes the line up appear to be intentionally alluding to which prisoners are most like the other is because Yuno comes directly before Kazui. The person she admits to being the most like.
There isn't much overlap between their songs since Yuno's song drops directly before his starts with the lines,
"I messed up, I found out." being repeated over and over.
A line that directly ties into Halfs line of,
"Where did I go wrong, probably from the beginning."
In the song proper it would parallel the line "If continuing to hide is called unhappiness, not even one word will get to you." pretty well to. However, when it comes to following up this line the first works better.
Shidou's song unsurprisingly has no overlap but is after Kazui's. Him and Kazui have been working closely together since Kotoko's attacks in order to take care of and protect injured prisoners. Plus, he's admitted that Kazui is the prisoner he gets along with the best during the first trial.
Q.18 Who do you get along with best out of the other prisoners?
Shidou: Mukuhara-san, I think. We’re the two old men here, and are often in the smoking area together.
On top of that Yuno has spent the most of her time hanging out with Mahiru or Kazui. So, it makes sense relationship wise for them to be where they are in the Jailbreak lineup.
Now here's where things get exciting. A lot of people would rightfully ask well Muu and Haruka are closest, they spend the most time together, why aren't they closer in the line up.
Let's get into the final four and most interesting choices of the Jailbreak line up and talk about what the Milgram staff decided to name this mega mix.
Futa's part in the mix starts off hard. Right after Shidou's we go into what I like to call the guilty mash up. Since all three of these guilty Prisoners had their songs overlap in row and honestly it sounds great.
First though, there is room to say that Futa is being compared to Shidou. Meaning the one most like him in Milgram which he incorrectly claimed was Kotoko before is more than likely Shidou. This makes sense given how he came in concerned about the well-being of those younger than him and Shidou's stance with kids. It really wouldn't be surprising to me if their mentalities were similar.
They also both failed to take proper care of people younger than them before. Something we only get a glimpse into during Shidou's trial two song.
Star again; another similarity between Shidou and Fuuta is that they're both fairly cynical in terms of worldview! From Mr Ethics is a delusion to "The world is full of shitty people isn’t is natural to look down on them all?" and "In the modern era, whatever I do is useless anyway I’m just going along with the flow." There's also the fact that the transition line between Throw Down and Bring it on is literally just "Throw down", which could allude to fighting.
(Gunsli: i.e throwing down a colloquialism in English for starting or being involved in a fight. In the same vein that Bring it on is a colloquialism in English usually taunting someone into a conflict. The equivalent of a bunch of middle schoolers yelling fight, fight, oooo what are you gonna do about it. Back to Star.)
/o/ Jumping on the throw down as a colloquialism real quick to bring up the other interpretation of it. That being throwing your weight on the side of an argument/conflict you believe in. This can refer to your ethicality/morals but it can also refer to monetary/societal value [something you can argue is touched upon by Shidou covering Delusion Tax + the quote "No life is worth the same as another's(??)"].
(Okay back to me I suppose.)
The only difference between Futa and Shidou is Amane and Es don't hate Futa. Es says it's important to not go easy even on friends and Amane keeps checking in on Futa. In fact, recently in the collaboration art you can see them all sitting together. Shidou standing behind and Futa to the side and behind Amane. Amane is pretty much right between the two of them but is noticeably closer to Futa.
Plus, despite the fact that Futa has been shown close to Kazui a lot recently he's the further from him than Shidou is.
"I don’t dislike anyone particularly. However, I think Amane rather dislikes me. Such a shame."
Even though Futa is far more abrasive than Shidou his curt nature is generally well received by those younger than him but looked down upon by those older. This is because to some people younger than him his behavior can feel like he's meeting them at their level while not being condescending, sometimes even appearing to be stupider than they are. Something that kids tend to generally like.
We see this part of Futa's nature during his second interrogation where he attempts to relate to Es. Outside of that Futa blatantly states friends to him are,
Q.01    What do friends mean to you?
Futa: People who get excited about the same things as you.
Meaning he's probably more likely to search for common ground with someone to better relate to them. This is something that Amane has seemed to be receptive to, considering the overlap between their songs. Outside of that it just makes sense she'd be receptive to someone that takes her statements seriously and she can have a back and forth with. Even though she's a child, that sort of engagement is still necessary and refreshing even more so considering the sort of child Amane is.
So, let's talk about that overlap. Their songs don't just overlap but the videos do as well. This also happens with Es and Kotoko, Mahiru and Yuno, and Amane and Mikoto (oh trust me we'll get to that). All these pairings are the ones that have become the closest to each other over Milgram.
Kotoko not only directly aligns themselves with Es but works for them as per the terms of the deal she presented to Es last trial.
Yuno and Mahiru talk and hangout rather often to the point that Yuno has offered to get Mahiru stuff when she orders her stuff. Also speculated but not confirmed that she may have ordered Mahiru the wheelchair.
Amane and Futa. Amane has continued to encourage Futa since they received their verdicts and despite him receiving medical attention as well has not threatened him.
Amane and Mikoto. They don't talk on a frequent basis but when they do they usually talk for a good while. Mikoto is chatty and Amane is willing to listen to him talk in depth about his experiences and even take notes. So, also no surprise there.
Back to Futa and Amane the line that overlaps between their songs is,
"It's going great, we're gonna punish you until you cry. If you get off now, you're a traitor. Now let's be reasonable!"
Now let's be reasonable continues to repeat. The line even skips three times before being repeated another three before Amane begins to sing.
These lines from Bring It On tie in well to Amane's starting line of,
"I can actually think of it as a good thing, see isn't it great?"/ "It's going great-"
"This happy pinky promise hurts to break."/ "We're gonna punish you until you cry. If you get off now, you're a traitor."
"Even I can say "I'm sorry". Even I have hope. I swear! I'm going to be a good girl now! That's it!" /"Now let's be reasonable."
Amane and Futa's mindsets align well with each other the MEGA MIX highlights this by putting their songs so close to each other. Musically having their mindsets collide. Through this it pulls to the forefront how "Bring It On" is all about punishing someone to the point of getting an apology and "Magic" is about apologizing for one's mistakes and promising to do better seemingly repeatedly.
The repetition of, "Now, let's be reasonable." between the songs highlighting how neither Amane or Futa think these things in and of themselves are unreasonable responses or requests to a perceived wrong. Their possible shared belief that all punishment should end at the point where the offender apologizes and going beyond that is a bit much.
Even if the punishment used to elicit the apology was disproportionate in comparison to the offense. Putting them side by side within the mega mix was a good way of highlighting this aspect of not only their songs but characters. Yet it doesn't stop there!
When it comes to Amane there's another interesting point. In this case I'm referring to how one of the televisions the prisoners' songs are displayed on within the Jailbreak Mega Mix is more than likely the same model we see her watching at the end of Magic. A CRT. Now it is very much possible all the televisions displayed in this video are different versions of the CRT but the exact make and model name is something neither Star nor I know.
The one in the middle is more than likely the one Amane is watching at the end of Magic. Despite neither of us knowing the specific model names. Star believes the one in the middle is the oldest television, the one to the right the second oldest, and the one on the left would be the most recent one relative to the ones there of course.
It's time for Amane and Mikoto! The overlap between their songs and visuals, just like Futa is strong. You can hear Amane singing lightly in the background as the instrumental of MeMe begins. Imagery from her mv overlapping with Mikoto's silhouette from the prison line up and being put over imagery from his own mv. Basically, distorting the two together.
The line overlapping here,
"But it's not scary at all, because it's love! I can really think it's great. See, isn't it a great thing?"
This ties directly into Mikoto's first line which I've discussed to death in other posts, "If I could laugh, if I could go back, I'd play dead even though I'm alive right? If I could end, if I could stop how long would this dream go on?" Amane's lead in line serves to highlight the placating mindset Mikoto has throughout MeMe.
Highlighting the undertone of the beginning lyrics and how Mikoto and Amane convinced themselves that their circumstances were fine even though on some level they knew they weren't. They just kept going forward with the belief that it was, and it would have the desired result.
Something that's really funny when one considers the imagery from Magic that overlaps between Bring It On and MeMe. During Bring It On it's Amane taking the stage but when we get to MeMe the imagery that overlaps between their songs is Amane thinking she has the right answer but being told she's wrong and the cat being injured. Something that can be considered a deliberate choice since while one of those scene is before the other the second scene doesn't happen directly after the the first in Magic proper.
In fact Amane being told her answers are wrong happens a good bit before the cat is injured. That scene ends at 1:16 of and the cat injury happens at 1:36 but now they've been spliced together for this overlap. Ignoring every other line that happens between those points. It's a good way to visually drive home that belief is wrong and it's in fact to no one's surprise not a great thing.
If Amane's song is about the hope of becoming that better version of yourself, Mikoto's is very much about the disillusionment of that concept. Facing the realization that no matter how much a person may try to be better there will still be people in their life who treat them like trash over and over. That sometimes the best or even the most self-preserving response is to grin and bear it along with the animosity one can hold towards themselves because they behave in that way.
Sadly, sometimes the key to surviving is putting up with people who don't give a shit about you, your feelings, or the effort you put into something and doing your best to not take that personally. I can't stop imagining Futa seeing this overlap between their songs and being like, "What the fuck; you two live like this?! It explains...more than it should..."
This overlap between Amane and Mikoto also serves to nicely point to what was one of the more jarring mvs and go see it's not scary all while putting cartoon animals over the actual footage. Something, I feel can come off as super sweet like Amane's seeing the initial response to Mikoto and going,
"Okay, this looks bad but look there's a cartoon cat now" while subtly whispering "It's not bad. Stop saying it's bad. It isn't it's love. It's not bad at all." In what can only be considered a blatant attempt at brainwashing the audience, and I appreciate that. We take our wins where we can find them Amane's right. MeMe wasn't that bad.
Amane's in Double sock puppets on her hands distracting people from Mikoto committing more in-depth murders like,
"The Dog was hurt by Mr. Porcupine's quills but Mr.Porcupine never noticed the dogs pain. Each day Mr.Dog would go into work and Mr.Porcupine would jab in another quill at first it seemed like a small error an accident. Yet, as it kept happening Mr.Dog eventually couldn't take anymore." Then the dog sock puppet suddenly has a bat and she recreates the murders in sockpuppet form.
After watching it Es is just like, "I'm so sorry Mr.Dog you've been through so much."
"Huh, oh...yeah? I have- thank you... I accept your apology, Es." Mr.Dog what the fuck is this kid seeing in these videos is he okay?! Is this a nickname for me now; what, why? Is he being genuine?!
Now Mikoto and Muu. The line that leads into Muu's part is,
"I won't forgive you if this is happening even though I'm right."
And oh boy do I have a lot to say about this one! Even though it doesn't overlap with her song MeMe's instrumental does particularly the drums. But let's talk about this line overlap and how it relates to Mikoto and Muu's relationship through the course of Milgram.
In my opinion I don't believe there's a lyric within After Pain that could directly tie into the line that leads into this part. The only line that comes close to tying in with it is,
"Why won't you stop hurting me?"
This line gives the same feeling of a lack of control over the situation along with mild animosity towards the fact that they are as Star would say being put through the trials.
It serves to highlight Mikoto and Muu's similar mindsets when it comes to facing punishment for their actions whether they remember them or not. That mindset being actually fuck you I was right and if you're smart you'll see that. If not I'm definitely not going to forgive you for putting me through all this even though I was right to do what I did. Basically, if you don't forgive me, you're the one that's wrong.
They both heavily focus on their crimes being a result of self-defense all be it in different ways given Mikoto's circumstances. Plus, after receiving her very small Innocent verdict Muu immediately pivoted into a, it's not my fault of course anyone could see that, mentality which was hardly out of nowhere. I doubt this is saying that Mu is the most like Mikoto given the Amane thing, but it is highlighting how their relationship has changed and how they may find their similarities and each other's abilities useful to the other.
He has basically become Muu and Haruka's chaperone. Which honestly good choice picking the one guy outside of Kazui who proved capable of fending Kotoko off on his own and wants to beat her at her own game. It's mighty convenient that those two are suddenly getting really close to Mikoto as soon as your Innocent status is up for debate again and may be in jeopardy. Maybe Muu is trying to as she put it in second written interrogation "chose better friends".
That's what brings us back to the name of the Mega Mix Jailbreak. It seems everyone in Milgram may not just be building relationships by gravitating towards people they just so happen to like or to just survive within the facility. They may be building useful relationships that they think would be useful if the possibility case of a Jailbreak presents itself.
This is why Yuno calls Kotoko's behavior stupid. Aligning yourself with someone whose opinion of you can change on a dime instead of people stuck in the same objectively messed up and weird situation as her... So, openly only serves to limit who is willing to help her later if her plan to work with Es backfires.
The three guilty prisoners whose songs overlap heavily should be concerning to some. Since two of them are the strongest willed people in Milgram who have voiced if Milgram won't agree with them, they will just rebel because they have done it before. So, honestly, what's a second time to them.
Not even going into Amane very actively attempting to indoctrinate Futa and clearly playing favorites with that goal in mind. It's not even just them that are possibly trying to or mulling over the idea of escaping. The only prisoners happy with Milgram as it is now are Haruka who is guilty now, Muu who is Guilty now, and Kotoko who honestly it would be so fucking funny if she got voted Innocent again like at this point we'd be dropping the ball for shits and giggles.
In fact prisoners so far this trial have,
Voice dissatisfaction at Es aligning themselves with Kotoko. (Yuno during her voice drama.)
Compared their circumstances to Es and highlighted there is truly little difference between them but their titles and Es is just as stuck here as they are. (Futa and Shidou in their voice dramas.)
Annoyance at continuing to be stuck there and how the appeal of the place for them has worn thin. (Yuno in the same voice drama.)
Outside of Haruka, Muu, and Kotoko no one else stuck within the facility is happy regardless of if they were voted Innocent or Guilty. All that to say the Jailbreak Mega Mix sure is interesting!
I hope they revolt~

Discussing the good and bad of Pokémon Journeys: Part “Chloe”
Time to discuss about the character that is still keeping me on board with watching Pokémon (2019)/Journeys despite having, cough, some issues with it. Let's talk about Chloe, also known as Koharu.
Tumblr media
TLDR; I like how Koharu is handled so far, even if I somewhat wish there was more of her, and I believe I know what the intention with her is, and that is to show that the journey to finding your dream goal can be an exciting one and with possible obstacles on the way towards it. More under the cut, Journeys abverted as JN.
So. Let's start with how I became to like her character the moment JN002 aired, but also how her debut in JN001 has become interesting part of how Koharu used to love Pokémon, but then grew out of it. Which to me, reminds of people who grew with playing Pokémon games, cards, etc, but then as they got older, they grew out of it.
Tumblr media
Anyway, as we all probably remember, both Gou and Koharu attended the Okido Camp as kids, where BOTH of the eventually meet Mew. From the very beginning, we're let known that Koharu is a daughter of a promising Professor Sakuragi, who's acquainted with Okido.
And we're also let known that the two are friends from before the camp, and I assume their games at Sakuragi's Lab involved playing as Pokémon or other stuff. She most definitely loved Pokémon and her dad's work back then.
But then when we fastforward to the present day as Satoshi, Gou and Koharu are all 10 years old, we see that this attitude has changed in Koharu. She's no longer interested in Pokémon that much, and the only Pokémon she accepts near her is their family 'mon Wanpachi. For me, this was very interesting approach, even if the "not interested in Pokémon" was done before with May/Haruka back in Advanced Generation series.
Even with this interesting approach, she was a side/supporting cast instead of main cast, which honestly felt weird to me as she definitely had a story to tell. But as I've been watching other shows lately, I kinda came to realise her approach reminds me of mid-season additions to cast, even thou her appearances nowdays are just a BIT more frequent, when before her joining the Research Fellows, she appear very seldomly.
Tumblr media
Anyway. In JN011 we finally learn that, she pretty much has issues with people's expectations and how everyone assumes her to be very much involved with Pokémon just because of her dad's work. Truly, this would end up affecting her affection towards Pokémon, thou it's possibly not the whole reason for losing interest. She even admits here she's not sure of what she truly wants to do yet.
It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of goal finding journeys, as they are very relatable to me as someone who took 20+ years to find out what I truly want to do for living, so Koharu wanting to find something instead of other people deciding it for her is very good lesson.
So what exactly is the approach with Koharu from this ep forward? Showing her see Pokémon in different, totally new lights, figuratively speaking. She's shown to take care of a Pidove who broke its wing in a runaway flight, helped her lil brother Sota's friend, Nami, attend to a small children's Contest, and went to a Fossil Exhibition with Satoshi and Gou to learn about fossils. And I feel like that, this fossil exhibition event is what truly rekindled Koharu's interest in Pokémon again. As we all remember, she truly enjoyed that trip, and she, for the first time, got to see Gou bond with a Pokémon, that was rampaging just moments ago. And this episode, accompanied with JN050, are why I am currently thinking Koharu's end goal will end up being related to fossils. It certainy would be an interesting approach for a female cast character, and I wouldn't mind her having a chat with some other character who's also involved in researching fossils... (cough Gary/Shigeru cough)
Tumblr media
Anyway. All of this seemingly lead up to Koharu finally meeting her very apparent soul mate: Eevee. I know, that most people were somewhat (or even totally) annoyed by the fact that yet another pokegirl receives Eevee as their Pokémon, and that this is just boring. While I understand the sentiment, considering Koharu's character: Eevee is the only Pokémon that actually fits her. Koharu is out there still figuring out what she wants to be. What she wants to do. And Eevee is the most relatable Pokémon for that kind of character: Eevee can become eight, and I repeat, eight, different evolutions. That's pretty much the same as having different paths to choose from when deciding your goal. And this specific Eevee has also not yet decided what it wants to do. It refuses to evolve. While in-game one could say this is because of the g-max factor, I highly believe this is purely done for the purpose of making Koharu and Eevee relate on a very, very personal level. So instead of Eevee having the g-max factor disabling the evolution (because let's face it, it's only done so people won't accidentally evolve their Gigantamax Eevee), Eevee is kind of, constantly pressing the B button to prevent it.
Tumblr media
Now: what has Eevee exactly given to Koharu's character? A lot actually. When before Koharu would try to deny interest in something or try to say she has something else to do instead of a trip, Eevee is there to push her forward to try things out.
Tumblr media
Like in JN050, Koharu is trying to priotize her School instead of a Fossil trip to Galar, but thanks to Eevee, who wants to go, Koharu gets the needed push to go and try out new stuff. I very much adored this scene in this episode, due to encouraging the "try out new things" approach in life. From this point forward, we then see Koharu join in on other trips like the Diglett Farm (where she definitely shined in team leading and got to experience the farming and team leader approach) and the Glimwood Tangle trip, that Koharu herself prompted to her dad and the boys, instead of being asked to join. Which reminds me of something else btw.
Tumblr media
While Gou is shown to be very knowledged with Pokémon, Koharu is shown to know more about other fields like how plants grows, and what kind of soil is good. This is from either school lessons or from her experience with taking care of the school flowers. She could possibly be considered a good student, and btw, I very much like the approach of not making her a school dropout once she started joining in on research trips, and instead takes homework to accomodate the fact that she's missing out on lessons. This isn't unusual in real life, so I'm glad JN is actually showcasing this approach with both Koharu and Gou. Thou with Gou, he's pretty much always absent, haha.
Now, her latest episode with Kikuna was an interesting one. While Koharu's main point in the episode was kind of to be the angel of love for Kikuna (which failed horribly, love you Kikuna <333 ), I'd say there was another reason for her being in that episode with Kikuna: it was to let her learn of the possibility of meeting possible pitfalls in one's dream goals. That lesson was in Kikuna's story about how she almost gave up in becoming a researcher due to a mess up with an important presentation for a conference, but found the strenght to try again. It's part of reaching your dream goal a lot of the time. Even Koharu's mom, Yoshino/Talia, gave her the story of how she originally wanted to be a mangaka, but gave up on the dream and instead approached something similar. These are all very important life lessons in how working toward one's goal can either fail, or come accoss obstacles. It depends on the person whether they'll end up switching the goal to something else, or strive to go forward to get past the obstacle. As someone who had exactly Koharu's mom's experience longside having to take a long while to find one, I appreciate that Koharu's journey has been about learning the good and bad experiences of working towards a dream goal.
Now: has this storyline been executed well? Imo, it has, but it ain't perfect, as there are some parts where I'd like to see some improvement on.
One of them is with how it's sometimes unclear as what kind of character she is counted as. Is the a main character alongside Gou and Satoshi now? Is the still supporting cast? Is she a lower tier main character that won't appear every episode still? The latest option would appear to be the case, but it's not often that simple to see.
Tumblr media
There's also the case of Wanpachi seeming like it was teased to be eventually becoming Koharu's first partner, but instead it ended up being Eevee. I think for most, before JN049 aired, people assumed Wanpachi didn't belong to anyone exactly and thus was free reign. But, as JN049 confirmed, Wanpachi belonged to Sakuragi himself. Which is sorta funny, as Wanpachi clearly loves him the least, haha. So, what exactly do they intend with Wanpachi? I think, that in time it'll eventually switch owners to Koharu, as it clearly loves her the most, but the journey there is still on-going.
Now, here's something interest to think about: I think Koharu not being in every episode has actually been benefitial for her, as she never gives me the feeling that she's taking anyone's time for herself, and her involvements in stories fit quite well. My current favourites for her are definitely her team leading in Diglett episode, which is JN052, and the Galarian Ponyta episode (JN055) where she clearly showcased that she's able to handle herself in sticky situations. Which is quite a beautiful detail, at least to me.
Now to quiiickly note her dynamics quickly, let's talk a bit about how she is a big sister. Like, for real. She's got a baby brother in Sota/Parker, and the two do seem to have good relationship going on. However, I really want to see more of this! There's way too little of it going on right now, and it's mostly been typical siblinghood. I'm so glad there's still full on family aspects in JN, which is what I loved in Sun & Moon so so so much, but I want to see more. MORE! MORE-
I already talked about how I enjoy her dynamics with Gou and how their childhood friendship is showcased so well, and yet I still grave to see more. The two know each other well, and Gou always, ALWAYS respects Koharu, while Koharu ain't afraid to tell what's on her mind to Gou. Thou, she also knows that Gou would judge her if she were to ask about Pokémon bonding tips. Dyamn.
Now: I want more of Koharu and Satoshi. The two def seemed to have a bit of a "uugh who are you don't talk to me" approach, but it naturally faded as they went on their first trip to Nibi City's Fossil Exhibition. And they've been in good relations since I'd say.
Also to quickly note, I love how Koharu has been mentioned in couple scenes as being the character who's taught them first-aid or told about jealousy and how one should take Pokémon's feeling into consideration (even if this latter one should be obvious to Satoshi but, I digress, Satoshi was way too focused on Riolu and just assumed Pikachu would be fine since they've been buds since forever).
There's also so much more I still want to learn about: how exactly did she meet Gou and why she decided to be friends with him, does she have other friends besides him (because I would assume so but she's never shown with anyone else), give us an episode that's focused on Koharu & Sota, let her see Satoshi battle as well (afaik, she has NOT), let her meet Alola Squad + other past companions, and oooh there's so much I want her to do and I see so, so much potential in her character and I really really REALLY hope the writers don't screw her up.
Tumblr media
Now is that all I wanted to talk about regarding Koharu... I guess so. As you might have figured out by now: I almost have no issues with how Koharu is written. She's enjoyable to watch and, suprisingly, I find the pace of her story-telling pleasant and not too fast nor way too slow. Could it do well with a bit faster pace? Possibly, but due to me seeing her as sort of a mid-season addition akin to how Precure or Digimon do them, I'm fine with this approach. Considering the current pace, I think she'll end up finding what she wants to end up working towards to by the end of this year, or early next year. And, despite how many might fear, I highly doubt it will be Contests. As it's pretty clear JN isn't out there to promote mainline games feature-to-feature, but instead cherry picks stuff it wants to do. I'm still quite certain, that she'll end up becoming a professor of her own fields, possibly of fossils (which, considering DP's Underground feature, could fit very well in promoting this feature of the remakes). Maybe even become a team leader of a fossil researching team, as she definitely showcases the skills for it, for knowing soil, fossil digging and again, team leading. And I totally didn't figure this out while writing this post. :'D (I totally did.)
So. I believe I'll end this post here, as this is already quite long by now and, honestly, there's not much left to talk about. It really feels good for me to talk so positively about a character in JN, as it's no secret that I ain't the biggest fan of the show. However, Koharu's approach speaks to me personally, very well, and I so, so look forward to seeing how her journey ends up going, and where it will lead her.
So who's up next on the list of discussions? I think you guys can guess it.
Tumblr media
And it's gonna be a doozy one. Oh man oh man.
Thank you so much for reading if you came this far, have a fantastic evening/morning/whatever, and take good care of yourselves!
This was Smiling Performer aka Aleira, signing out! PEACE!

an unwarranted, not asked for (positive) rant about Yakuza 5
So, I get it. Yeah? In the grand scheme of the yakuza 5 plot, Aizawa definitely should not have been the final boss but he was (more on that in a different post). We gotta get over it. I'm not gonna waste a bunch of energy frothing at the mouth about how much better the story wouldn't been if the writers had done x, y, z.
I'm tired of ruining RGG games for myself by doing that. I'm nearing the end and there's a certain formula I've come to terms with that is in EVERY SINGLE GAME. So, imma just love it for what it is, write my lil fanfic and call it a day.
Yakuza 5's plot was convoluted and maybe even longer than it should've been but I still really enjoyed it.
If I'm honest, because 5 was so long, I got this odd sense that I would play it forever. So once it ended, I got pretty bummed out.
It's funny because as I came across aspects of the game that were unfamiliar I greeted them with a roll of eyes and a groan and without fail, I wound up loving whatever it was and wanting more of it.
I'm not a game reviewer. I can barely even write but I'm going to take a shot at talking about the things I loved about 5 that aren't really related to the plot. If ya wanna read my babbling, feel free but expect no semblance of order or structure. If ya want a proper game review, you won't find it here lol. I'll try to keep it spoiler free here and make a different post for when I talk about the characters specifically where I will wanna go into more detail.
Alright..
Graphics:
Visually, I think it looked pretty damn good. I played it on PC and had very few problems. There were times when it was a lil wonky. For example, some of the cutscenes looked like they were ripped straight from the PS3 version for a few seconds, especially if the camera was zoomed out from the subject. Sometimes, the blurring was very obvious to the point of it being eye catching but I don't know if that's just because of the time I spend editing that makes me pay attention to things like that or not. Another thing I took issue with was the glossiness of the eyes of some characters. Like, say, Kiryu. He looked like he was on the verge of tears for majority of the game and that broke some of the immersion (for me) when he's supposed to be threatening and tough.
Other than that, it was great. I loved the animation details. I'm a sucker for that sorta thing. All of the little facial expressions that are 'blink and you'll miss it' are right up my alley. Aizawa, I'm looking at you! I'm not scoring things but if I were, I'd call it a 10/10 for sure. 20/10 for Aizawa's facial expressions alone.
Gameplay:
Combat-- Booooy. The combat/progression system was a lot of fun. The training was engaging and I was (for the first time out of the ENTIRE franchise) thrilled to max out all the stats. The addition of the extended health bar and the Tatsuya health bars (idr what they're called) were great. Doing all the training, having the dragon gauge filled, the health bar doubled and the focus, strength and spirt bars filled brought something different to the combat that I really enjoyed. Kiryu and Saejima were OP'd af but I loved it. Kiryu and Akiyama's combat was very appealing and seamless (mostly). I preferred playing as them the most. Saejima was okay but nothing that really stood out to me, personally. Shinada's combat was extremely clunky though and unless I had weapons I enjoyed, I loathed fighting with him.
Side/sub stories-- this was one of those areas that I rolled my eyes at and then got fucking obsessed with once i got used to it (except Haruka's; I was looking forward to hers because I expected something different).
- Working as a Taxi driver? You kidding me? What the fu--Oh, damn. That's actually pretty neat-- Hold on, I get to race-- What?! I FINISHED IT?! ALREADY?!
-Seriously? Hunting? You've gotta be-- Oh that's that guy that that one tumblr acct is always posting about-- If I get rammed by one more fucking deer so help me-- Wait, I don't wanna leave the mountain yet!
-Don't even get me started on Haruka's. I get to watch Haruka do choreography to some fucking bops?? I get to dance to more bops in town??? I get to shake hands with creepy, sticky fans??? And read Haruka's sweet reactions to fanmail????? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP!
One issue though is that I didn't get into Shinada's side story. The baseball thing was just not for me. In it's defense, everything else, I'd gone back and given it a chance and wound up loving them but I ruled this out from the get go. That's on me. It's probably great but nah.
I am really bummed that Akiyama didn't get a side story. One thing that I will complain about and give my unwanted suggestion is: if they didn't wanna give Akiyama a side story, they could've given him double the substories but that's just because I am a whore. SO no hard feelings.
Locations:
Nagasugai, Fukuoka-- was pretty. It gave a sense of serenity before Kiryu's ultimately dragged back into the fray. I enjoyed exploring it. The npcs were friendly and with that one bracelet, it was nice not having to fight random thugs every 2 seconds. I loved that one little quest where you have to go around collecting trash. That was oddly fun to do (the sfx were oddly satisfying too) and then going back to work and seeing Kiryu's progress on the board: Loved that. Kiryu's apartment was nice too. It was all clean and organized which was a shock because he was so clearly depressed. Buut that might've had something to do with the owner of that extra toothbrush thoooo.🤭
Tsukimino, Sapporo-- very nice! Prison and the mountain village didn't really offer a whole lot visually (imo) so it was a nice change of scenery. It was really pretty. The snow festival sculptures were super cute and I kinda wish that it played more into the story just so I could see what they'd do at such a festival. At the time of writing this, I just remembered that I forgot to go back to the snowball fight which is a bummer. Maybe I'll go do that.
Kin'eicho, Nagoya-- very unsettling. It was another factor that kinda encouraged me to speed through Shinada's route. It came off as really eerie, grimy and seedy. Perhaps that was an intentional, creative choice given the type of life Shinada leads but it was too off putting for my liking.
Sotenbori and Kamurocho-- tried and true. Loved them. Always gonna love them. But let me just take a moment to congratulate my husband on Kamurocho Hills turning out amazingly!! Job well done, babe. Love you! It looked great and it would've been so cool if I could've explored it outside of combat.
Music:
I expected nothing less from the Sega Sound Team but they did a fantastic job. I loved the music. Now, there were times where they'd play a cheesy song during a really corny scene that made me cringe a couple times buuut I have come to expect that so it was all good. Majority of the time, the music did a swell job of setting the tone and making the story that much more immersive. No major complaints from me. My personal favorites are: all of Haruka's songs (duh), 'Be the Star!!' and 'Comin' at ya, My girl.' I was pleasantly surprised to find on Spotify 'Be the Star!!' is 4:36. I have been playing it to hell. It's playing right now and what about it????
Overall:
Yakuza 5 was a fun time. When I sit here with all my thoughts and just accept it for what it is, it's a solid game in every sense and I genuinely take back anything negative I said when I first started getting into it. This comes at a surprise to myself but it's over taken Kiwami 2 as my second favorite game in the franchise, Yakuza 0 being number 1, naturally. I already have the urge to replay it which is refreshing because I stopped having that feeling after playing 3 and 4.
If there is one thing that I wish I could change about the game, is that there was so little Majima it made me sad, especially with the plot being what it was.
Anyways, if you're looking for a sign to play Yakuza 5. This is it. Go! Do!
Next post, I'll be talking about the characters that stood out to me that I'd like to voice my opinion on from 5.

Megumi Ogata at FanExpo Canada (2010)
I found this old panel transcription in my documents, and while dated, I thought it might be fun to share.
Tumblr media
[T] - Translated
[E] - Said in English
() - My commentary
Q: What differences do you see in the voice acting business now from when you first started?
A: [T]Voice acting is very different in Japan than North America. A seiyuu does varied work. More than animation, you also dub foreign movies, commercials, etc. When I first began work, it was the beginning of the "seiyuu idol". I was part of a small group, and it felt special. Now, seiyuu idols are much more popular. I am not an idol anymore.
Q: Of the characters you've played, are any in particular special to you?
A: [T] Having played them, all characters are dear to me. Kurama of Yu Yu Hakusho would have to be the one I am most attached to.
Q: Do you have any roles you wish you could re-do/change?
A: [T] I give each character my most in that moment, so I have no regrets. With time, though, I come to understand them better. For example, Kurama was thousands of years old, and I admired his wisdom as a young person. Being older, I can relate more to his long experiences. I feel closer to him. The same with Haruka. I loved Michiru then. Now, I love her more. [E] Everyday, I love Michiru more, more, more. (She lifted her hand gradually to the ceiling to show just how much.)
(At this point the panel in the neighboring room became obnoxiously loud, music blasting. A good sport, Ogata-san pretended to play the air guitar to it.)
Q:If you had not become a seiyuu, what would you have liked to become?
A: [T] A mother.
Q: How do you feel about Ken Amada's transformation in Persona 3?
A: [T] He's the same character. (There seemed to be a misunderstanding, because the person had meant to ask about character development. She then added on:) It's positive he became a better person, despite murder, to find goodness in himself and change. (I have never played this game, so I have no idea what any of that meant.)
Q: What is your favorite scene in Evangelion?
A: [T]All of them.
Q: How did you feel about the TV series' final episode?
A: [E] Very difficult. [T] Because it was written by the director, I cannot explain what was in his head.
Audience interjection: [E] Do you understand?
Ogata-san: (laughs) [E] Do you understand?
(Apparently, no one understands the ending. XD This was followed by confusion over DVD release numbers, and Ogata-san repeating, in English, "2.22.. 2.22? Ha? Very great movie!")
Q: Have you heard anything regarding the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon? New releases?
A: [T] No, I have not heard anything. There was a re-release boxset in Japan. Not here? I would like something. [E] I am sad. I want to see Michiru again.
Q: Your original songs such as Shiokaze ni Nosete and Kaze ni Naru were written with Haruka of Sailor Moon in mind. Are any of your other songs written under character influence? (My question!)
A: [T] Yukito in Cardcaptor Sakura had only one character song, but I felt it was not enough. I wrote "Ashita Haretara" thinking of him and Sakura-chan. Sakura-chan is cute.
Q: Did you perform music or do voice work first?
A: [T]I began piano lessons at three, and in high school, played the keyboard and base in band. I also sung in musicals, before becoming a seiyuu. [E] (laughs) I was not famous.
Q: Do you have any musical influences, or bands you like?
A: [E] Van Halen, Sex Pistols, Sheena Easton. (She said a couple more, but I'm not exactly sure what.)
Q: You've had a long career in voice acting. Have you ever been in a rut, if so, how do you pull yourself out?
A: [T] Seiyuu is an occupation. It's taken very seriously. You cannot leave, and expect to return in the business. I have taken vacations, and left for six months once, but I always come back. All you can do is do your best.
Q: What criteria did you base your Animegu song choice on?
A: [T] (laughs) I like them.
At this point, Ogata-san asked the audience: [E] Why do you like Japanese animation?
Audience member: Giant robots!
Ogata-san: [E] I like robots too. (pause, serious expression) [E] Evangelion is not robots.
(I think everyone died laughing at that moment, because of how intensely she said it. Apparently, people calling Evas robots is a big pet peeve of hers.)
Audience member: The stories are more original, fresh.
Ogata-san: [E] Fresh? Fresh~? (She seemed to like saying this word.)
Audience member: The animation is better too.
Ogata-san: [E] I am sad. Japanese animator very poor. [T] A starting animator will work 16 hours a day, and make only $500 a month. There is no insurance or coverage either.
Audience member: It should be better!
Ogata-san: [E] I think too.
They had to wrap up the panel. Ogata-san reminded us of her concert, and finished with, [E] "Thank you for loving Japanese animation" and left the room.
