About 498 and the changes which I think could have been better

minor Spoilers ahead‼️‼️

I think this could be easily avoided actually . Taejin is evil no question about that . But the attempt to r*pe part wasn't actually necessary.

Let me explain- now Taejin is basically Shaman 2.0 in almost every aspect. PTJ could rather make him evil and smart . Now that he's the "owner" of Cheongliang, first what he had to do was gain more popularity among the villagers. Then his position as the new Shaman would be secured enough.

Now , knowing how much possessive Taejin is towards things that he this "belongs to him" , he'd obviously go for Vin , Seongji And Sujin . he'll never be able to convince Vin to join him . BUT Seongji knows that he can't stay in Cheongliang as James might come back to fight him - so if vin joins Taejin as his yaksha the villagers won't cause him any harm . So he advises him to do so . But vin doesn't understand him . He thinks Seongji is saying that as he got tired of babysitting them .So they get into an argument . And Seongji starts to have a panic attack and attacks Vin . Vin is shocked by this and as he doesn't know about Seongji's condition , he leaves immediately.

MEANWHILE, Taejin is totally aware of what's going on. Cause this is what he had planned - making Vin and Seongji Fight eachother to death so there's be no one in Cheongliang to go against him . But this isn't enough, so to execute his plan to the final stage he uses Sujin - he kills her and frames Seongji for her death (pretty much what happened in 498 but without that part ) only Jaewoo witnesses Taejin leaving the Seongji's Hut so he goes to the hut and sees Sujin dead and Seongji unconscious - he tries to wake him up but fails so he chases Taejin and asked him what he did to them and he sees the wound on Taejin's neck ( that Sujin made while she was struggling) and Jaewoo realises that and Taejin starts beating him up but as he can't take care of a corpse rn he tell Jaewoo to keep his mouth shut and doesn't kill him .

Vin reaches home and everything goes like 498.

AND I WILL KEEP THEM AS SIBLINGS HERE BECAUSE ONLY THEN SUJIN'S CHARACTER GETS ANY DEPTH AND NOT USED JUST AS A PLOT DEVICE ONLY

it's still still sad and everything but I think this would've made Taejin's character a better villain?(By that I mean smart Villian who uses his brain and not DISGUSTING DISTURBING Villain)

And even the misunderstanding between Seongji and Vin would have made more sense. Cause after all Seongji did for Vin , I don't think Vin would kill him just because Seongji said that in 497 and 498 . But if he attacked him, he could do that.

What do you think is the reason why the MC Cheonliang gang, specifically MC Pesticides, we’re particularly scared of Mary and had some guilty feelings?

She was not bitter but she wasn’t buddy buddy with them either. I remember Vin once told MC Pesticides to apologize to Mary. I thought they may have played a prank on her back when she was bigger, or asking her on a date only to humiliate her.

Whatever it was, Vin sure wasn’t happy with them either.

⚠ warning ⚠ long post ahead:

So from everything said about Cheonliang Fam so far, this is how i perceive it:

It probably goes like Vin and his Cheonliang Gang were the strongest gang in Cheonliang and they were all good pals and respected him as the leader.

Around the same time, he was probably a member of the Judo club at his C middle school. And there, he probably knew Mary as another member of the club..you know like someone you just know in passing, not as a friend.

These panels right here are where Vin Jin suddenly starts reminiscing the old days. He was talking about Mary. About how she was the best Judo student of his batch and how every coach and manager wanted her..

Mary was a plus size girl back then and most likely taunted over it, because we know how awful middle schoolers can be 😒

Around the same time, Vin probably met with an unfortunate accident that led to his eye condition– polycoria.

Now, this is where things started going downhill for him. He probably got admitted to a hospital and upon his recovery, his left eye became like that.

From there onwards, probably his parents said some unpleasant stuff, his school kids began mocking him n all..

And i suppose thats when he talked to Mary for the first time. Like one day, she just found him ditching classes n sulking someplace. So she probably talked to him (she is pretty wise) and like..uplifted him and told him that his eyes are still fine.

And maybe thats when he realised she wasn't that bad. I feel like he probably already respected her for being the best of Judo club. As he has stated himself that when it comes to Judo, Mary can beat him. But this is the point where he actually saw her as more than a plus size girl at his school and you know..became friends with her.

So gradually, Vin picked up some glasses and his entire gang took up to wearing glasses as a sign of respect for him. And Mary (now friends with Vin) sorta became a part of their gang, hanging out with them, riding motorcycles and all..

Now this is where i incorporate your date idea..

Mary probably developed a crush on one of their junior members in the gang (just a bad guess). She probably confessed and got rejected and told that even though she's a friend, there's no way anyone would date her due to her plus size (yeah awful middle schoolers 😑)

Thus, she left crestfallen.

By the next year Mary lost all her weight and grew out her hair (Vin said this but I can't add the panel as tumblr only allows 10 pics in a post 😭).

Then, she probably went back to confess to the junior. And this time she got invited to a date but ended up being pranked.

Mc Pesticides is probably the one guy who knew about the prank and still let it happen. Which would explain why she has forgiven him for whatever happened.

But from her gaze its evident that there's still traces of hurt and disappointment.

But after so much time, now she just wants to talk to him like a mature person and get over it.

However, a date prank can't be reason enough to kill someone.

This is my wild guess but probably something worse happened to Mary.

From how I see it, when Mc Pesticides called Vin a murderer, Vin wasn't fazed. He countered by calling out Mc Pesticides for his hypocrisy and said he should be apologizing to Mary.

In Vin's eyes, him killing someone is equal (and even worse) to what Mc Pesticides did to Mary.

Wild guess but not completely unbelievable: Mary was probably sexually harassed.

Lookism deals with a lot of societal issues and scary topics. Harassment of women, especially younger girls, is a common thing prevailing in many parts of the world.

It was their junior who probably touched her inappropriately or tried to force himself upon her.

Now Mc Pesticides probably knew about the prank but didn't expect his junior would go as far as to harass her.

And this is what led to Vin losing his temper as Mary is an important person to him. He ended up beating the guy, probably going too far in his anger and ending up accidentally killing the guy.

He probably also had a fight with Mc Pesticides for knowing about the prank yet not warning Mary.

Which also explains why Vin doesn't regret killing him. And also Mary thanking him for it.

I’ve reread Lookism twice, I don’t remember the canon for this but I’ve been thinking…Vin Jin asks Mary if she regrets coming to Seoul. Not if she regrets following him, but coming to Seoul.

I wonder if instead of Vin running away, so to speak, it was more Mary who wanted to leave. Or even if they both had strong personal motives to want to leave and did so together.

I just think it would be interesting if Mary was the bigger driving force in the two of them leaving for Seoul instead of just what Vin Jin had done or how he was treated. Though Vin Jin is definitely sensitive about his eyes, I think he has very thick skin otherwise and wouldn’t care too much about his violent reputation. MC Pesticides was angry at him for leaving, what Vin Jin had done leading up to that (injuring/killing their junior) was a secondary grievance.

The Seoul kids enjoy very little police intervention, but I doubt it would be the same for an out of the way place like Cheonliang. So if Vin’s old crew is his biggest obstacle from back home, I wager he’s not so pressed about the cops. And that is also why I think Vin and Mary leaving for Seoul isn’t just about Vin Jin’s past actions, but how Mary is involved.

I just hope the Cheonliang arc delivers on both Vin and Mary. They’re both so strong and capable, I can’t see one as second fiddle when they’re such equals.

I honestly agree with everything you've stated here.

I did a long theory post about what might have actually happened back in Cheonliang to cause Vin Jin and Mary Kim to run away. If you've seen it, then good. If you haven't, you can read it HERE.

Anyways, its just a wild theory but i totally agree and hope that Cheonliang Arc isn't simply about Vin (him being a male character) but also Mary. They've always been shown as a duo and an equally strong one at that. So i too hope Mary isn't sidelined and is the major driving force for their story.

TBH I've taken a sort of break from Lookism. The current arcs are boring me and I'm simply waiting for VinMary's return to the plot. Its either that or Cheonliang Arc itself that i'm dying to read. So for both our sake, hope it arrives soon 🙏☺
