cahokia mounds exploration

We are on for Cahokia Mounds! Thanks to the College of Arts and Sciences Co-Curricular Fund, we have the funds for transportation to and from Cahokia Mounds. Here is what I submitted:

The goal for the trip is two-fold: to both explore the site (using the park’s own augmented reality tour and our own photography) and to reflect upon, via writing exercises, the juxtaposition of Cahokia—an ancient and lost city—and Saint Louis, a city whose own past and present also suggests how urban centers are far from inert and static containers for people, but are themselves ongoing projects, to which writing is central.

I want my students to be able to see and describe Saint Louis from atop Monks Mound in Cahokia in order to intensify their engagement with the value of public writing. As students tour the site they will take photographs and compose field notes. Both will then become part of a short, reflective essay about the trip in the context of the course and their individual projects within it. These short essays might subsequently be collected and published together through the course website.

Based on responses to the GoogleForm—and accounting for both availability and interest level—it looks like Friday, November 18 is the best day. The plan (and we can adjust this little as needed) is:

leave campus sometime between 12:30 and 12:45

15-minute drive to Cahokia

arrive around 1:00 and begin exploring

explore (in small groups) for about 45-minutes (using AR app, MavicMini Drones, and video & still cameras)

gather together atop Monks Mound for some writing and reflection (15-30 minutes)

15-minute drive to campus

arrive on campus sometime between 2:15-2:30

We can adjust these timings as necessary. And we can negotiate additional elements such as snake selection and playlists for the drive.
