Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam (born 18 July 1975), better known by her stage name M.I.A., refers to the military term. She also chose M.I.A. because of a missing relative. M.I.A. is a rapper, singer-songwriter, record producer, and activist. She began her career as a visual artist and a designer in West London before her music career in 2002. Eventually, she gained notoriety in early 2004 for her singles “ Sunshowers” and “Galang.”

I stumbled across her in late 2003, maybe early 2004. I liked her because she was much different from what was happening in hip-hop and indie dance music. M.I.A began charting in Canada and the U.K. and, eventually, the U.S., where it topped the Dance/Electronic chart. It also charted in several countries in Europe and most of the globe. She has been nominated for three Grammy Awards and has received various other awards for her work in music. She is politically active in her home country of Siri Lanka; some of her music is politically charged and socially active. M.IA. can blend dance, hip-hop, and world music perfectly. M.I.A.’s politically charged music pairs nicely with her visually stunning and sometimes controversial music videos. Her music is shining a light on refugees around the globe and multiculturism. She has collaborated with various artists and is becoming more than just a pop star but a political pop star.
