Ballo watch, Part 2
Is there a second of this act that isn't genius? No. No, there isn't.
Those holes in the stage are such an OSHA violation.
Sondra is an actual goddess. And her dress looks really tactile. If I wore that, I’d be touching myself all the time, and it would probably be weird.
Who carries a spare veil around with them, just in case? Sopranos apparently.
Verdi wrote bigger, fancier choruses, but the Ballo Laughing Chorus is my favorite chorus he wrote. Hello hill I want to die on.
Whatever is beyond sexy, it is this.

On June 1st 1943 Dr Henry Faulds, pioneer of fingerprinting, was born in Beith, Ayrshire.
Now Faulds was not the first to study fingerprints, about 200 years beforehand an Italian Marcello Malpighi noted ridges, spirals and loops in fingerprints. He made no mention of their value as a tool for individual identification, another who studied them was Czech anatomist John Evangelist Purkinji who noted fingerprint patterns but again he made no mention of the value of fingerprints for personal identification. Englishman Sir William Hershel is credited with the man to first use fingerprints in identification, he was a magistrate in Jungipoor, India, but although he recognised that fingerprints were unique, he was using them in place of a signature on contracts.
And so to Faulds, he took up the study of “skin-furrows” after noticing finger marks on specimens of “prehistoric” pottery. A learned and industrious man, Dr. Faulds not only recognised the importance of fingerprints as a means of identification, but devised a method of classification as well, the first to do so.
As well as publishing his findings in the Scientific Journal, “Nautre” he also wrote to Charles Darwin, with an explanation of his classification system and a sample of the forms he had designed for recording inked impressions. Darwin was in his old age by now and replied to Faulds saying they were of no use to him but promised to pass the materials on to his cousin, Francis Galton. Galton went on to publish the first real classification system for fingerprints in his book “Fingerprints” in 1892, there is little doubt his findings originated from Faulds initial findings.
Basically he stole all of Faulds work and gave him no credit.
Faulds is also credited with the first fingerprint identification of a greasy fingerprint left on an alcohol bottle.
The first criminal identification in fingerprinting was by an Argentinian police officer, Inspector Eduardo Alvarez, in 1901, using what has become known as The Galton pattern types he was able to identify a woman by the name of Rojas, who had murdered her two sons, and cut her own throat in an attempt to place blame on another.
Her bloody print was left on a door post, proving her identity as the murderer.
The Galton method of fingerprinting was not documented until 1888, a good 8 years after Dr. Henry Faulds first brought the methods to his attention.

Latinx singers of classical music: a list so incomplete as to be positively embarrassing
What I wrote in the previous post in this series applies here as well:
Some of these artists are up-and-comers; some of their careers were at their height in the 1970s, when I first began paying attention; a few go back further than that.
Although in this case it’s more than a few — which, along with the fact I kept finding more and more younger artists, is why I decided to end my research and post this now.
I’ve included many of the younger ones solely on the basis of reputation, without having heard them. Not all are or were A-listers, but they are all people who sing or sang Western classical music for a living, or taught others to do so, or a combination of the two.
Assembling this list has required me to consider some questions of inclusion. Do the children of European immigrants who, in some cases, didn’t even bother to give their children Latinate names belong here? Undoubtedly many people will say no; I disagree. (I have drawn the line, however, at Spanish or Portuguese artists who decamped to their countries’ former colonies.)

Ballo watch, Part 3
First scene in Act 3 is just Too Much the way Dima and Sondra play it. They really do love each other, whatever else they both feel for Gustavo, and just…fuck me. I love it so much, it pisses me off.
"Eri tu” is a Dima song. The end.
Might seems strange to say, but I think I’ve had more Ballos ruined by terrible Oscars than any other character. Bless you, Kathleen Kim.
I have such feelings about the sad, drunk violin here at the end.
KITCHEN KNIFE OF DOOM!!!! 🔪🔪🔪
Fic-wise, I keep wondering where in the last act I could subvert what’s happening and transition to the OT3 that should have happened, but I’ve never been able to quite decide. Suggestions welcome.
And that is all! Thank you @revedebeatrice for setting this up!!! I’d love if we could do, maybe, a weekly or monthly opera. Vote on something. Folks can watch and post whenever it’s convenient over the weekend. I mean, Met gave us 24 hours to squeeze in each production, and personally, I found that super handy. And this was so fun, I'd happily do it again!!!!

Lorenzo Alvarez 1978
Lorenzo Alvarez 1978 – impressive classical guitar in the style of Santos Hernandez and Marcello Barbero
This guitar is very special as it is exactly in the same building style of Arcangel Fernandez' guitars (Lorenzo and his brother Juan had a close relationship to Arcangel Fernandez) we had in our shop. They sound almost exactly the same.
Further it is very similar to Eric Claptons famous Alvarez guitar.
Lorenzo Alvarez is a guitar maker of the very highest level. He started building guitars in the 1940s together with his older brother Juan.
Later, the Alvarez brothers became friends with Marcelo Barbero (1904-1956), one of the great guitar makers of the last century. He became their mentor, providing them with advice and support, from which they benefited enormously. Together with Marcelo Barbero, they also had the opportunity to look into the world of the guitars of the great Santos Hernandez, because Marcelo Barbero worked for Santos Hernandez’s widow for some time after his death.
Lorenzo Alvarez founded his own workshop where he worked until shortly before his death and also trained other luthiers.
Many professional guitarists played and still play guitars by Alvarez. His guitars follow the tradition of Santos Hernandez and Marcelo Barbero.
Eric Clapton played a Alvarez guitar and recorded “Tears in Heaven” with it. He also played his Alvarez guitar at his famous MTV unplugged concert in 1992. This guitar was auctioned in 2004 for $253900.
This beautiful guitar was built by Lorenzo Alvarez in 1978. It has a spruce top and rosewood back and sides. The scale length is 660 mm and the nut width is 52 mm.
The sound of this instrument is captivating with its warm and characterful tone – the trebles sound clear and brilliant. The basses are powerful and sound dark and warm.
The guitar unfolds an enormous volume and inspires with an incredible lightness.
It has a high collector’s value and is wonderfully suitable for performances or recordings. It belongs to the top class of instruments we have seen.
The condition of the guitar is good. One repair on the side has been done perfectly.
It comes with a hard case.
