44 Years of Deewar (24/01/1975) Deewaar is a 1975 crime drama film, written by Salim-Javed (Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar), directed by Yash Chopra, and starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Nirupa Roy, Parveen Babi, and Neetu Singh. Reflecting the tumultuous socio-political climate of 1970s India, Deewaar tells the story of a pair of impoverished brothers who, after their family is betrayed by the misplaced idealism of their father, struggle to survive in the slums of Bombay, and eventually find themselves on opposing sides of the law. The deewaar ("wall") of the title is the wall that has sprung up between the two brothers, drawn apart by fate and circumstances in a time of socio-political turmoil. Bachchan's character Vijay was loosely inspired by the real-life Bombay underworld gangster Haji Mastan. Deewaar is often considered a ground-breaking cinematic masterpiece. The film had a significant impact on Indian cinema, as well as wider Indian society, with the film's anti-establishment themes and Bachchan's criminal anti-hero vigilante character resonating with audiences, cementing Bachchan's popular image as the "angry young man" of Bollywood cinema. It also established Parveen Babi as the "new Bollywood woman". The film also cemented the success of the writing duo Salim-Javed, who went on to write many more blockbuster films; the value of film writers skyrocketed thanks to Salim-Javed, who were paid as highly as some actors at the time. Deewaar's influence also extends to world cinema, influencing films from Hong Kong and British cinema. Deewaar received the Filmfare Best Movie Award of 1975, in addition to six other Filmfare Awards. It was also a "super hit" at the box office, ranking as the fourth highest-grossing Bollywood film of 1975. Indiatimes ranks Deewaar amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. The film had several remakes. It was remade in Telugu as Magaadu (1976), in Tamil as Thee (1981), and in Malayalam as Nathi Muthal Nathi Vare (1983). The Shaw Brothers Studio produced a Hong Kong remake, The Brothers (1979), which in turn inspired John Woo's breakthrough heroic bloodshed film A Better Tomorrow (1986). There was also a Bollywood remake, Aatish: Feel the Fire (1994). Deewaar also inspired Danny Boyle's Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire (2008).

“Ellam Sheriyakum” Review: It is a family drama with a political background, says director Jibu Jacob
Tumblr media
In Malayalam, "Ellam Sheriyakum" means "everything will be fine". Director Jibu Jacob is pleased with the suitability of his new film's title in a post-pandemic world. With Asif Ali and Rajisha Vijayan, the film hits the big screen on Friday (19 November). "I've been waiting for cinemas to open again. But I fear that the decision will cause financial loss for my producers. Now my hope is Ellam Sheriyakum," Jibu said, referring to the upbeat mood in the industry after cinemas reopened. He is happy that he has brought audiences back to the cinema with Dulquer Salmaan Kurup. "Our films are not star films. But there is trust throughout the team, as Kurup has received an overwhelming response. We hope the mood will last when our film comes out," he said. "The story is about the personal lives of politicians. The incidents that happen in their families. And how this affects their political careers and image. Both right and left party cadres are represented in the state," said Jibu, director of Vellimoonga, Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol and Aadyarathri. Asif plays Comrade Vinet, the leader of the party's youth wing. Against his will, he marries Anne (Rajisha), the daughter of VK Chacko (Siddique), a prominent leader of a rival party. Vanity and Annecy are like chalk and cheese. Annecy, who is open and persistent, has the upper hand over Vineeth, who is always low on self-esteem. Her nature ends up creating problems in their relationship. Annecy gets angry when Weinite makes more time for her. The party activities went on just like he did. In the end, pregnant Annecy is torn between her love for her father and her husband," Jibu said. Adding that all the characters have their political views. Be it Annecy or Asif's parents, which ultimately marks the beginning of several conflicts. Jibu, a filmmaker-turned-director, mentioned that. Although Elam Sheriakum Vellimoonga's first hit film (2014) also dealt with politics, it fell into a different genre. "Velimunga is for a street politician named Mamachan. The character in Ellam Sheriyakum will remind viewers of certain real-world politicians and political events in the state. Sidick's character is actually a mix of our two leaders. But I'm not taking sides. I'm stuck believing that all countries have good and bad and we don't hesitate to say it," he added. The film, written and written by Sharis Mohammed, is set in downtown Travancore and parts of Kannur. For the Asif-Rajisha combo, he believes they are the best couple in Malayalam cinema right now. "They did it as a couple in their first film . I really enjoyed working with them. It's so easy to work with two great actors who seem to be competing in their talents," said Jibu. Also in the cast are Johnny Anthony, Sudhir Karamana, Sridjit Ravi, Kottayam Ramesh, Suresh Kumar, Tulasi Mani (who played in Sankarabharanam) Niraja Rajendran. "This is the 200th project of the Usepachan film composer, who also played an important role. I am honored to have him on board. He's the oldest member of our crew, but nothing can match his energy," Jibu said. Thomas Thiruvala directed the film, and Dr Paul Vargese produced it. There are some cute details like how the priest and the mute tailor, believed to be Chako's assistant, chose. And the emotional scene with a young poet student (Balu Varghese) plays out accurately without being overly dramatic. The acting is excellent, especially Sidick as Chaco. Asif Ali has shown that he knows how to take on a mature role. And is doing an excellent job here again. Rajisha had a significant but small role and played it well. The younger characters, whether Johnny Anthony or Calabhavan Shajon, played well. Ouseppachan's melody, which also makes a stunning cameo, is sure to become famous. Ellam Sheriyakum's success is that he doesn't support the ideology. But he doesn't reflect the problems of both sides and isn't conscientious about it. This is a film that the whole family can enjoy; This is a great story and it will give you really something to discuss out and think about. She also provides a brief overview of other topics, such as women in politics and careers. Read the full article

50 years of Mammootty: Why the superstar shows no signs of slowing down
The popular Malayalam actor’s career reflects the importance of being earnest, as he continues to work hard and evolve, even after 50 years in the industry
Fifty years of shining bright on the silver screen has not dimmed the lustre of Mammootty, aka Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail. On August 6, 1971, Mammootty, then a lanky student of Maharaja’s College in Kochi, made his debut as an actor in a blink-and-miss appearance in film director KG Sethumadhavan’s Anubhavangal Paalichakal. Mammootty reappeared on the screen in 1980 in a small role in Vilkkanundu Swapnangal (Dreams for Sale), written by MT Vasudevan Nair and directed by Azad. Also Read | Get ‘First Day First Show’, our weekly newsletter from the world of cinema, in your inbox. You can subscribe for free here It was the late IV Sasi’s movies, many written by T Damodaran and MT Vasudevan Nair, that catapulted Mammootty into a superstar. Seema, Sasi’s wife, who acted with Mammootty in several blockbusters, recalls meeting him on the set of Sphodanam in 1981. “I liked his confidence and wondered who he was. I was told he was a newcomer called Mammootty. I went across and met him and told him that I liked the way he carried himself,” she says.

MT Vasudevan Nair and Mammootty   | Photo Credit: Ragesh K She recalls complimenting her husband for casting him in Trishna (1981). Seema and Mammootty worked in classics such as Anubandham, Aaalkoottathil Thaniye, Adiyozhukkukal, Aksharangal etc. all scripted by Jnanapith winner MT Vasudevan Nair. “Recently, I saw One, his latest release. I called up Sulu, Mammootty’s wife, and told her how much I enjoyed the film. Sulu continues to be a good friend and we keep in touch,” says Seema. One of Mammotty’s early characters to get noticed was that of police officer named Jacob Eraly in KG George’s masterpiece Yavanika. Jalaja, who played the lead in the film, talks about a serious actor who used to drive down from Kochi every day to the sets of Yavanika in Thiruvananthapuram as he was shooting simultaneously for two films. “Most of Mammootty’s scenes were in the night where he was shown questioning the suspects. His dedication towards his work was evident. Even then he was getting a number of roles.” In the meantime, Mammootty and director Joshiy struck a golden partnership that produced many of his mega hits, beginning with Aarathri (1983) and films that covered different genres such as New Delhi, Nirakootu, Shyama, Nair Saab, No.20 Madras Mail and Kuttettan.

When the actor was at his busiest, he got a call from auteur Adoor Gopalakrishnan for Anantharam (1987). “It was not the lead and I told him that. But it hardly mattered to him. He came up with a superb act. Then he played the lead in Mathilukal (written by Vaikom Mohammed Basher), for which he won his first National award for Best Actor (along with Hariharan’s Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha). He told me that he considered himself fortunate to play the role of Basheer while the writer was still there,” says Adoor. Vidheyan, the third film that Adoor and Mammootty teamed up, bagged the actor his second National award for Best Actor. “It was an anti-hero role. As soon as I called Mammootty, he said ‘yes’. He asked if he could read the screenplay. Mammootty is the only actor in my films who has read a screenplay of mine before the film began. The film required him to cut his hair short. I was right there to ensure that his hair was cropped almost to his scalp,” says Adoor. Praising his discipline, Adoor says the halo of a ‘star’ was nowhere visible when Mammootty faced the camera. “Even at his peak as a superstar, here was an actor who was keen on doing offbeat films and enjoyed pushing himself to breathe life into his role,” adds the auteur.
Like nobody
During the Eighties and Nineties, Mammootty worked in several back-to-back films under the helmsmanship of PG Viswambharan, J Sasikumar, Padmarajan, Lohitadas and so on. Mammootty has also worked with Bharathan, KG George, Sibi Malayil, Shaji N Karun, Lohitadas and Shyamaprasad with equal felicity. He also went on to act in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and an English film on Dr Ambedkar. Mammootty’s family dramas, a favourite of his fans, saw him personify patriarchal family values that came to be identified with several of his characters in films such as Vatsalyam, Arayannegalude Veedu, Valyettan, Chronic Bachelor and scores of similar films. Film director Ranjith, another filmmaker who gave Mammootty some of his memorable roles in the recent past, says the veteran is someone who never lets seniority stand in the way of making a good film. Pranchiyettan & The Saint, Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha, Puthen Panam and more were some of the duo’s films that worked at the box office. “Mammootty has this talent to speak different dialects in Malayalam and I doubt if there is anyone in the industry who has done so many with such perfection,” says Ranjith. He recounts fondly how the actor worked without any remuneration in Kaiyoppu because he liked the character and how Mammootty told him he would co-produce Pranchiyettan... when Ranjith told him he was producing the film under his banner.

He has no qualms in reaching out to anyone, who he hears, is doing an interesting film. “In fact, he notices the crew on the set and the minute he sees someone with promise, he asks them when they plan to write or direct and to keep in touch with him,” says Ranjith. Lal Jose (Oru Maravathoor Kanavu), Lohitadas (Bhoothakkannadi), Anwar Rashid (Rajamanikyam), Aashiq Abu (Daddy Cool), Blessy (Kazhcha), Amal Neerad (Big B) and Martin Prakkat (Best Actor) are among those who turned directors with a Mammootty film. “It was Mammookka who made me a director. I was the cinematographer of Ranjith’s Mammootty-starrer Black and was set to return to Mumbai where I was working. Once the film was over, out of the blue, Mammookka told me to call him when I have a project to direct,” says Amal, whose first film with him was Big B.
The way forward
Bheeshmaparvam, Mammootty’s new film for release, is also directed by Amal and Big B is scheduled to have a sequel. Amal says although Big B was panned initially, it became a cult classic among a new generation of film-goers. “Unlike previous films of the actor, there was almost no melodramatic speeches. His role was that of a cold man who spoke few words and he did it so well,” adds Amal.
Tumblr media
Showing no signs of slowing down, Mammootty is busy listening to scripts and working. A strict diet and a fitness regimen have ensured that the 69-year-old actor looks younger than many of his juniors in the industry. The tech-crazy actor has always kept himself abreast of technology in cinema. A keen photographer, Adoor has talked about his excellent photographic skills. Also well known is his craze for automobiles of which he has a huge collection. As 2021 confines cinema largely to OTT platforms, Mammootty has been waiting in the wings for reopening of theatres to enliven the big screen again with his characters. Dulquer on the dream team of 'Varane Avashyamund'
Tumblr media
He completes eight years in the film industry; the Malayalam film industry to be precise. He is not just a star son, but has proved his mettle by acting in over 25 movies and producing three movies, most of them box office hits. A heartthrob in every sense, he handles every role with élan. DQ - as he is fondly known - has spread his magic to the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi film industries as well. In a telephone conversation with City Times ahead of the release of his latest production venture Varane Avashyamund, starring him alongside debutant Kalyani Priyadarshan, Suresh Gopi and Shobana, and directed by Anoop Sathyan, Dulquer Salmaan gets candid about movies, arranged marriages and more...
Tumblr media
dulquer salmaan✔@dulQuer Love. Life. Family. Relationships. Bringing together all these in one super special movie. Here is the trailer for #VaraneAvashyamund releasing on the 6th of Feb in the GCC and 7th Feb all across India. So excited!!! https://youtu.be/M3i-VGCY69c  YouTube ‎@YouTube2,1213:33 AM - Feb 1, 2020Twitter Ads info and privacy441 people are talking about this Varane Avashyamund is a movie literally bursting with highlights - directed by Sathyan Anthikad's son, Anoop; the leading lady is Lissy and Priyadarshan's daughter Kalyani and, of course, it stars you. How did you manage to put together this elite group? This is a dream cast, all credit to the director. He had this in his mind for some time. I was not on board initially. But he was sure about Suresh sir (Suresh Gopi) and Shobana. There was also a bit of confusion about the heroine. Wasn't Nazriya cast initially? Yes. There was some clash in dates and so she could not join the team. Then Kalyani came in; I came on board and things got fleshed out a little more. Are Suresh Gopi and Shobana present throughout the movie? (Laughs) Yes, they are! It's not just cameo roles. It's like a multiple narrative. They are coming together after 14 years and some narratives are similar to Manichithrathaazhu. There is lot of curiosity among fans regarding the movie. Expectations are rather high. Yes, but it's all very organic. I don't think it's gimmicky in any way. We have been correct in terms of casting. I am excited about the narratives, they are very interesting. The movie talks about arranged marriage. What is your take on this? I don't think you can put it down to just arranged marriages. I think the trailer did that, giving that sort of impression. Well, my take . (laughs) I don't think there is any right way in meeting the right person. Actually there is no particular way. These things just happen in life. It's great to see 'slice of life' movies which the audience can relate to. Is that a genre you are particularly comfortable with? I think it's important to me that I relate well to the role that I do. That could be the reason I get drawn to 'slice of life' movies. Believable roles. Even the books I read, I need to be able to relate to the book, the characters in the book. Overly commercial roles . well, they are not for me. I cannot do them. I don't think I will be convincing. Yes, I tend (to do) more realistic movies. You are the epitome of fashion, the suave male of Malayalam cinema. How do you maintain your 'style-factor'? That is not a conscious decision. I like clothes, it's something I liked from a very young age. I have an eye for good things. I don't know, style is something unique to people. But it's not just about clothes. It's about how you come across, the sophistication. That's not conscious. I have been noticing people, their styles. This is how I am, you know. You work hard for your movies and it is reflected in your success, not just in Malayalam, but in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu films, as well. Has the fact that you are Mammootty's son helped you or hindered you in any way? Maybe in the beginning it has helped me. You know, to get my portfolio right, that sort of thing. Beyond that it all depends on how you do, how hard you work. How you perform and how ardently your fans like you and accept you, that's what counts in the end if you need to survive. Does it irk you if your capabilities are taken for granted? (Laughs). No matter what, I have had to work hard, very hard. Otherwise you cannot stay on in the industry. But initially expectations would have been high... That would not be fair on any person when you are kind of comparing us to their 20 to 30 years of solid experience. You can't compare that to a new comer, it's just not fair. The success of a movie is more daunting when you produce one. Is it in anyway different from just being an actor? It's exciting. Yes, it's different, but thrilling. My initial intent in producing a movie was to be able to create. I needed to make a team of my own to start with. That took some time and I got together a good team. I did not want to make experienced people do all the work. I have ambitions. I want to be a regular content provider. It's about a group of youngsters getting together. It's an opportunity.  So that's bringing young blood into the Malayalam film industry. I love doing that. I think it's about providing opportunity. And in turn, I get great opportunities. But then again, let me tell you, it's not charity. It's something we should be doing for the industry. And, in return, I get to do what I love doing.  Has your degree in Business Management helped you when it came to production? I don't know. I am waiting for the results. I have done two movies earlier. But they were different. Each movie is a learning experience.  What excites you about acting? It's exciting to be a part of any project in any capacity, and the more roles you take up the more exciting it is. If you are an actor there are specific times to come in, and specific roles to do. But as a producer, you are involved full time. You play various roles. I just enjoy that. Are you looking at direction also? No. I don't want to take too much time out of my acting career. I enjoy acting.  Malayalam cinema is back on track with new-age movies telling real stories. Budgets do not seem to matter now. What is your take on big-budget movies in the present scenario? I think there is space for that also. People have the appetite for all kinds of movies. If you feed them with just one type of movie, like what you call new age movies, it may not go down well, may not always entertain them or get them excited. You have to constantly give them different genres. I don't believe the time has come for just real-life movies. There is space for all types of movies. I truly believe that. When the old school comes back, there is still a lot of excitement.  But don't you think young actors are getting more opportunities now? Yes, definitely. But then age does not matter in the Malayalam film industry. Everybody has work now. There are a lot of good movies; lot of scripting is happening. It's a great time now. It's not like there is a particular type of appeal, everybody is trying different types of cinema, different stories, different roles. There is so much happening.  Is this phenomenon only in Malayalam movies? Yes. We are coming out with good movies. It encourages artists when the content is good. A movie like Anjaam Pathiraa is essentially a thriller. The fact that there are numbers for such movies is very encouraging. And people are viewing it repeatedly though they know the thread, even though they know the mystery. The suspense is known, there is no shock value, but still people are watching it because it's a well made film. That predominantly has to do with Malayalam movies and its audience. You won't find it anywhere else. Be it Driving Licence, Anjaam Pathiraa, Kumblangi Nights, all these have numbers. That's Malayalam cinema for you. What is the major difference when you act in a Malayalam movie and a Hindi movie? Well, it really depends on the type of movie you are doing, the team you are working with. It's difficult to generalise the entire industry. I have been lucky to work with good teams trying to put out good work. Do you discuss your movies with your father? We both hear from directors all the time. Sometimes when I lock something or I kind of like an idea, yes, I discuss with him.  Would you take up only path-breaking cinema or would he encourage you to mix them with commercial cinema like he does? He does a mix. And he has been successful in that, that's his experience speaking, his talent. I will, maybe. But not now. Again, the movies we do have numbers, and then such movies become commercial movies. What is your criteria in selecting a movie? I generally go with my gut. It's like when you read a book, you know whether you like it or not. I know when I like something.  So, it's the script above the team? It's both. Sometimes it could be a great team but the script may not be up to the mark. Sometimes it could be a great script but the team does not deliver. So, it should be the right combination.
