He was one of three pawangs or shaman in a trance under scorching sunlight in a cloudless blue sky.

The mudflats at Carey Island was drying but he kept pressing a knotted bunch of casuarina roots on his sweat-drenched forehead.

He pressed deliberately, as his Mah Meri tribe’s Hari Moyang thanksgiving festival was ending. It was the last of a couple of days, of day and night rituals, and they had just finished the Jo'oh dance with young girls of the tribe during the Puja Pantai ceremony.

The other pawangs were watching the end of the rituals, of popped rice being strewn, a dancer in a mask posing for photographers and visitors walking off the beach.

Only this man kept at pressing the casuarina roots to his forehead, a sign of respect to his ancestors in the annual ceremony.

And then he stopped and walked away as the string of firecrackers exploded like a fierce and fiery chant. The spirits had left, the people were leaving and the pawang reliving the moments of trance and dance.

The Mah Meri are found at the coast of Selangor, from Sungai Pekek to Carey Island, and one across the Klang River. They’re famous for their masks and dances, and number some 4,000 in villages from the Pelek River to Carey Island.

Inktober Day 26: Dark Mah Meri tribe in Pulau Carey, Selangor are known for their wooden mask carving of their deities and forest Mambang. One of the well known Mambang class-1 is Moyang Tok Pongkol or Aepycizon nodisii. Known to disguise itself as an old man or a young boy, it always try to trick travellers and locals alike who happens to stumbled upon him in the forest. It feeds in the amusement it gets from playing tricks with lost human being travelling in its area.
