I just acquired a twin set of USN MA-2/CWU flight jackets from a retired USN pilot and air crewman by the name of Jim Walker. I recently had the honor of meeting up with Jim, a former MCPON, and hearing a few stories from his days in Naval Aviation. His service spans 30 years, from the Vietnam War to the 90's. These particular flight jackets are from his time with squadron VAW-88 during the 80's. VAW-88 was a carrier airborne early warning squadron stationed at NAS Miramar and they spent the much of that decade aboard the famed USS Enterprise flying E-2 Hawkeyes. Their role was to detect approaching air threats from up to 300 nautical miles away by utilizing the E-2's onboard detection and communication systems, a.k.a. the top dome. The flight crew would then provide that data to fighter aircraft like the F-14 Tomcat in real time. Swipe left to see the E-2 Hawkeye in action.
