A $50 CNC

In theory, there’s isn’t much to building a CNC machine. Hook a bit to a motor and move the motor around with some lead screws and stepper motors. Easy. But, of course, the devil is in the details. [DAZ] made a nice-looking and inexpensive rig that probably isn’t the most precise CNC in the world, but it looks like it does a good enough job and he claims he spent about $50 on it. The video below shows some of the work it has done, and it doesn’t look bad.

This isn’t a rainy afternoon project. You’ll need to cut some wood and 3D print many parts. The drives use M8 threaded rod. Electronics is just an Arduino running standard software.

The steppers looked pretty light duty, and we wondered if it would have been worthwhile to trade them out for beefier ones instead of modifying the ones used for bipolar operation. Still, the results did look good for $50. The 775 spindle is another place you could probably spend a little more and get something better. Non-printed linear rails, and a better screw? The point is that you’ve got a basis to build from.

We’ve seen cheap CNCs made from scrap before. If you decide an Arduino is too low-powered for your CNC, try going 32-bit.

Front End Paint Prep

Somehow I’ve spent an entire week so far sorting out the front in preparation for getting it into epoxy this week, as there were quite a few little things that needed addressing.

First up I needed a bit more confidence that the windscreen was going to fit correctly as my previous attempts had never been quite good enough. After more attempts than you’d care to imagine I finally got the seal sitting nicely in the aperture, the key being to only just getting the seal over the lip all the way round, rather than focusing on trying to get the whole thing over in one place and finding it didn’t fit somewhere else:

I then shaped up the corners on the aperture to blend the new front panel into the a pillars:

With the window done it was on to trying to improve the cab door gaps as I didn’t get these as good as I wanted when I repaired this area last year.

The N/S door gap to the front panel was noticeably inconsistent towards the bottom:

So I welded in a piece of steel rod:

Ground it flush and then cut it to give a much better door gap:

Over to the O/S door, and unfortunately the lower mount on the van that the door hinge attaches to had stripped its thread. I did debate fitting a rivnut (too big so wouldn’t allow adjustment), cutting a larger M10 thread (would mean I’d have to enlarge the hole on the door hinge), but ended up deciding to repair it the right way and fit a new plate in the mount.

There is only a single spot weld holding the top in place, so I drilled this out, bent the top of the mount out of the way, and slipped the plate out:

Made a new plate and cut in 2 m8 threads to match the original:

Slipped the new plate in:

And plug welded the mount shut again. Much better:

Both doors currently require shims to get them to fit properly which are a faff to fit so I decided to go full on “Door Whisperer” and bend the mounts with my new Hinge Adjustment Tool:

And now we have relatively decent door gaps which don’t need shimming:

I’ve started stripping the transit primer off, and hopefully the only bits that will need further filler are the edges towards the door:

Description of SAB 202

The SAB 202 compressor is a capacity adjustable screw compressor with oil injection. The two rotors are equipped with 4 lobes (male rotor) and 6 lobes (female rotor), respectively, executed with asymmetric profile according to SRM licence. As indicated on the spare parts drawing at the end of this manual, the rotors at the suction end are fitted with slide bearings, whereas the bearing at the discharge end consists of a combined bearing set with slide bearings, absorbing the radial load, and ball bearings, absorbing the axial forces. The axial forces are partly relieved by means of the rotating balance pistons mounted on the rotors. The rotors are designed for both male drive and female drive. The driving rotor is fitted with a shaft.

The compressor is fitted with a large built-in suction filter, which effectively prevents dirt particles from the refrigeration plant from being led with the suction gas into the compressor. The suction filter housing also has a built-in compressor protection valve which - controlled by a pilot valve - safeguards the compressor against any unwanted high compression pressures. For efficient filtration of the oil that lubricates the bearings in the compressor, an oil filter cartridge has been inserted in the compressor block.

Furthermore, the compressor contains a built-in non-return valve, preventing the compressor from running backwards whenever the power to the driving motor is disconnected. The driving shaft is fitted with a shaft seal of the slide ring type, consisting of a fixed cast iron ring with an O-ring sealing against the shaft seal cover and a rotating springloaded carbon ring with O-ring sealing against the shaft. It is possible to regulate the compressor capacity steplessly from approx. 10% to 100% by means of a regulating slide mounted under the rotors. Once the slide has moved away from the slide stop a gap is created so that some of the sucked-in gas is returned to the suction side. The bigger the gap, the lower the compressor capacity. The regulating slide is moved hydraulically by a regulating piston and controlled by a solenoid valve system. The compressor also features a regulating system by which the built-in Vi volume ratio can be adjusted. The result hereof is that the compressor works optimally at varying operational pressures in the plant.

To optimize the compressor volume ratio the position of the Vi regulating slide must be changed whenever the compressor works at max. capacity. This is done by changing the position of the slide stop. At partial load the Vi volume ratio will only be approaching the optimum. Regulating the built-in Vi volume ratio can be done in the following two ways, depending on the compressor type Manual regulation of the Vi slide:

By turning the spindle, pos. 180, in accordance with the curves in the instruction manual.

By means of the oil pressure and two solenoid valves, controlled by a UNISAB II control system.
