Google Syntax
1. How would you search for an exact word or phrase? Add quotation marks surrounding the word or phrase. E.g. instead of typing red cars, one can type “red cars”.
2. How would you search for something on a specific site? Add an operator. Therefore simply add site: in front of the word. E.g. instead of searching tesla coil, you search tesla coil site: Stanford.edu
3. How would you correctly search for a definition? Put define: in from of the word you are searching. E.g. define:mitochondria
4. How would you search for a specific product available within a specific price range? Type the price range by simply adding (..) between the highest and lowest prices following the word you typed. E.g. kodak camera $1000..$2000.
5. How would you search for a specific filetype? Simply put “filetype” followed by the type of file you’re looking for. E.g. filetype:xls for excel spreadsheets.
6. How would you include or ignore words in your search? Place the “-“ in front of the word to exclude/ignore it.
7. How would you find sites/pages similar to an existing one? You put related: in front of the site/pages to find similar to the existing one. E.g. related:yahoo.ca.
8. How would you confirm the exact form of a quote even if you were missing some of the words? Simply put an asterisk in replacement of the missing words. E.g. the * fox jumped over the fence.
9. How would search for pages containing two connected words? You place a “-“ between the two connected words.
10. How would you search for social media content containing a specific tag? You place the specific tag for that social media in front of the word. E.g. #torontoraptors or @kyliejenner.
