I asked the zebra Are you black with white stripes? Or white with black stripes? And the zebra asked me, Are you good with bad habits? Or are you bad with good habits? Are you noisy with quiet times? Or are you quiet with noisy times? Are you happy with some sad days? Or are you sad with some happy days? Are you neat with some sloppy ways? Or are you sloppy with some neat ways? Yes Ingredients Schmincke pigment, Gum Arabic, Honey and Essential Oil of Clove Vegan? No
Note from the Maker
I have been painting with watercolours for 23 years and I have been making watercolour paints for the last four years. Every batch of paint is hand-mixed on the glass slab for no less than one hour non-stop. These handmade watercolour paints feel very smooth on the brush and on the paper. All paints are very lightfast.
Swatches
Overview
A talented professional artist himself, Matteo makes these paints for his own use and eventually decided to share them with others.
In a sense they are very simple. Only 10 colors. Single pigment. Nothing fancy.
But there is something to be said for a line that simply focuses on quality and utility. You can see in the way these paints shine in his own paintings come out where his focus is. The end result. Beautiful paintings.
You can see how careful he is in the creation of his watercolors in videos he has produced and blog posts explaining the topic.
Pros
Extremely well made paints
Color payoff is great even from dot cards
Includes all colors necessary for nearly all paintings in the range
Perfect for the painter who simply wants their paints to do their job well
Cons
Packaging is not fancy or cute
Line does not include a very wide range, and is very orthodox
Who is it for?
These pains are best suited to the painter who simply wants to get their job done with very high-quality paint. There are no glitter paints. There are no multi pigment colors. Just a few single pigment colors.
Mateo is an artist himself, and you can see that in the colors that he has made here. These are colors for a working artist. You didn’t have to worry about the pigments that he has chosen fading on you or ever worry about low pigment load. They are reliable and dependable. And of course, beautiful!

Who Am I? Not Finished with the Blog yet
I have been asking myself this question for as long as I can remember. When I was 6, I began drawing with pen and ink. I took photos when I was young when I was allowed to, but was never allowed a camera of my own. I was always so excited when my mom got the film developed and printed, to see which ones I had taken. When I was 11, I began writing. In my 20s I started a family to which all my time was dedicated. In my 30s, I understood something was missing in my life and I went back to college. I found photography again. When I went into the darkroom for the first time, I found peace. Real peace. The pitch dark filled with the deep red lights sparked something in me I had not felt since the first time I picked up a pen to draw with.  I started my own darkroom at home and Boudior Studio for intimate gifts for their spouses. I then bought a digital camera and taught myself how to use Photoshop.
But there is still something . . . missing.
Soon to come are some practice images. Those I thought would work. I love working up to a project. Taking practice shots. It helps the mind gear up. Research should always be a huge part of a project. How else will you spark the ideas?
What is a Triptych?
Most artists and photographers will know the answer to this, however, do they actually know the importance of a triptych? What does, using a triptych format, add to an artwork? Why would one choose to do this? Triptychs have been around since
(Lori McNee & Fine Art Tips, 2019)
Annie Leibovitz
The first photographer I am researching is Annie Leibovitz. I have been a long time fan of Leibovitz. Her lighting styles and creative poses as well as her sets amaze me.
I find this photo just perfect. Here we have Annie Leibovitz in casual dark grey clothing and walking boots. Everything about her screams natural, from her hair to her smile and her pose. She is comfortably resting her hands on her camera. I can only imagine it to be her favourite object. She blends with the backdrop she has chosen for this self-portrait. All the colours, save the beauty light in the background go well together. It’s an even playing field. The beauty light being backlighting her from behind and to the side causes a soft glow on Leibovitz’s hair, face and shoulder closest to it. There is enough contrast in the image to be pleasing to the eye. I do find that my eye is being constantly drawn to the light, but I still like it there. It works somehow. There is an s-curve here. I doubt Annie has much time in her day to day to take a load of self-portraits, this strikes me as a ‘I just sat down for a break and took this’ sort of image. I love the vertical lines in the wood behind her. If they were horizontal, I don't think the image would work so well for me. The light seems soft, but I am now noticing a bit more harsh light pattern on the floor but I am not convinced that is light. It looks more like a stain on the floor. This photo ‘feels’ like a working shot. It ‘feels’ like it was taken in the back of a barn studio. I love it.
Tumblr media
Annie with her favourite object. (Phaidon, 2019)
This is such a calm image of Annie. This, to me, looks like a living areas perhaps in a studio? I’m not quite sure, but I don't think it matters. What matters is that this space is comfortable and Annie is at ease here. The contrast is fantastic, and the light feels harsh here. Perhaps a speed light? It is certainly not natural light. The composition seems to flow to the left, which feels strange to me. I like that Annie is not positioned in the centre.
Tumblr media
Annie Leibovitz in her space. (Frank, Frank and Nicholas, 2019)
Self-Portrait . . .
Here we have Leibovitz, a fashion photographer, as herself, on a roof-top darting (almost leaping) across in front of her camera, another camera in hand (perhaps in her left hand she holds a trigger. She is dressed all in black wearing comfortable shoes. This self-portrait depicts Leibovitz how she must feel as she moves through her life: always on the move, always working. The landscape image is on a tilt and depicts the city behind her. She is frozen in mid run. Fantastic black and white image.

David Bailey
Another photographer I admire is David Bailey.
This self-portrait includes David Bailey and a dramatic scarf on a clean white background. The man himself looks straight into the camera. His expression is serious. There is an age of wisdom in his eyes, and a sterness perhaps. He knows what his likes and demands respect in this image.

Richard Avedon
Richard Avedon, a fahsion photographer, in his studio . . . Richard is leaping in front of the camera. This is an excellent image. We have various studio equipment and a white backdrop. I can only imagine that his is describing what he wants his model to do. They image is stark white in areas, with almost a clean white feel in the background on the white. You can se Avedon’s shadow beneath him on the dirty floor. I love contrast, and this image is not short on that, having the blackest of blacks and several shades of ‘white’. Even the floor and white walls are delineated in the background on the left. The room feels like it is tilting slightly to the right in the direction he is leaping.
Tumblr media
(Joeinct.tumblr.com, 2019)
Here we Have Richard Avedon with his favourite object. The film is grainy, his glasses are pushed up onto his forehead and he’s holding his beloved Rollieflex camera. The studio light is close to his face, the light is blown out and it is bouncing on whatever is in front of him as its image is reflected in his glasses. The light here is harsh, but it works. Because the light is blown out on his nose and hand, it seems to balance the light between him and the studio lamp. Where the light is shining, the image is grainy. The image is presented in hight contrast, and is overexposed bottom and bottom left and where the light is.
Tumblr media
(billdobbins, 2019)
Again, we have Richard Avedon. This is a self portrait. I adore this, not only for the Clean White look, but also for the high contrast. Avedon is treble exposed here, or so it seems. The photographer is holding up his negative image over half of his fact. Very cool. Then we have a closer 3/4 view of Avedon’s face on the left. I am not sure what the terrycloth looking object is over his forehead. I find it distracting, bit it does add texture.
Tumblr media
(Flickr, 2019) I could only find this image here. Will look for it in books.
Irving Penn
Irving Penn is a fashion photographer. The image below is a self-portrait of Penn himself. The mirror is cracked in a couple of places creating jagged horizontal spaces. The image has a dark quality to it, and I don’t just mean the dark contrast, or the slight purple tint. There is a mayhem in his gaze as he looks directly into the lens and this has a cubist style about it.
Tumblr media
(Irving Penn: In A Cracked Mirror (Self-Portrait) (A), 2019)
Other Photographer’s work . . .
While the triptych below is not exactly “Who Am I”, it is close to it. In trying to analyse this image, I wondered what it was actually about.
Tumblr media
Monica BiancardiIl Palazzo di Atlante (triptych), 2019 Shazar Gallery. (Artsy.net, 2019) “According to the Neapolitan artist, Punti di Vista is a project on light, natural or created by art, which reflects on perspectives that are always different”.
Who Am I?
Well, I’m a tree hugger, I can tell you that. I love walking in the woods and soaking up all the ‘zen’. I can be heard or even seen talking to a tree. I get this feeling off of them and I feel like this one is a male, this one a female. Strange I know. But hey, that’s who I am. I have toyed with 3 different ‘Who’ projects. I am torn actually. There is a place I love to go in Port Glasgow called Finlaystone Country Estate - A large country estate in Renfrewshire near Glasgow, seat of the current Chief of the Clan MacMillan. I always take my camera there. I shy away from too much noise. For me, it’s sensory overload, so I stay away from the more populated areas. For my first ‘Who’ Project, I am thinking of me, in the woods, talking to my favourite tree. Yes, he has a name. I am masculine by nature, even though I realise I come off all ‘woman’ I have always felt masculine. I don’t know why. I digress, there is a place there in the woods, that makes me happy. It’s an old shack full of wonderful old things. I could sit there and look at the window for hours. and for my favourite object, well, the tree of course, but, I’m not sure? Is that tree overload? I will have to toy with perspective. Also, I have a branch that sits in my studio I could use for my favourite objects. Images taken 14th September.
Tumblr media
The 2nd ‘Who’ that I am would be showing my other artistic endeavours. I began drawing with a pen when I was 6. My darkroom doubles for my art studio. When I am really struggling, I always return to the roots of my creativity. I feel almost childlike as I sit and draw with nothing but a pencil and pen. Below is me drawing my next masterpiece, (insert laughing emoji here). So this would be my self portrait, my hut, or the woods, as these are linked would be my favourite place, and for my favourite object, in this case, would be my quill and pens and a bottle of ink.
Tumblr media
The 3rd ‘Who’ that I am is a photographer. This is my heaven. I haven’t been able to get it entirely up and running yet. I still need the blackout cloth recommended to me. I have ordered chemicals. Waiting is the hard part. I am impatient, although, you would never know it if you saw me drawing above. So, my favourite place in this 3rd ‘Who’ would of course be my darkroom. My favourite object, my Olympus film camera, and my self portrait, perhaps me, being that only camera. I have also considered a self portrait of myself laying in my ‘rinsing tray’.
Below are my initial contact sheets
I took way more images than I am showing here. Some would call me an over-achiever. I call myself thorough; I leave nothing to chance. I would rather have more images than I need, than not enough. NOT ENOUGH=DO IT AGAIN. While I don’t mind, once the briefs begin shooting at us in rapid fire succession, “do it again” is time I might not have. My black and white film professor in America told me that it takes a 100+ photos (this was with actual film!) to get 1 good image. I live by that! The images below were taken 1st September at 8pm-ish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the image below, I only have a few items in Actual focus. My thought process is this - that in our lives, there are really important things, primary things, and then there are things of secondary importance, and further still, a tertiary importance. This image says loads about me. First, it is in my private place. No one but me enters here. on the back wall, there is an old calendar of Johnny Depp images, that is because I love Johnny Depp movies. He is of tertiary meaning in my life, so, he is only half there, and in the blurred portion of the image. So, if you put a level of importance on the varying degrees of focus, you, as the viewer begin to realise what is truly important to me on a creative level. I am a lover of high contrast and gloom, even in my images. Thus one would say this image is underexposed. I like extreme contrast in an image. The blacker the better. I would say I don’t know why, but I actually do. I’m just wired that way, and I take after my father. My mother is ‘of the light’, and he is ‘of the dark’.
The image of my two very good friends in the camera frame sitting behind my rinsing tray is actually of more importance than I have portrayed it. When I retake the image, I will move it possibly onto the platform of the enlarger. The troll dolls also. They are of importance to me because of my mom. So they too need to be a bit more forward.
Tumblr media
I have many objects in my life that are important to me. I cling to the inanimate. I don’t know why. There is cold comfort perhaps. They never let me down.
There is 4th “Who” that I am. In America, when I was very dark in my thoughts, I would take my camera to a special place that was behind another of my favourite places. The Urbana cemetery. It was a beautiful cemetery with mature trees and ancient stones. I loved walking through an reading names and it gave me a boost because those people’s journeys were over, but mine was still ongoing. I used to say to myself, this too shall pass. Then I would go into the woods and take images of my tree friends. During an art exhibition, I won best of show and at a personal show, a Professor of the University of Illinois purchased my fav image from that time. My show was called, “The Coincidence of Light and Design”.
Below are only some of the images from my personal show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below is the image purchased by the University professor. I had printed it on rag paper large banners size. The frame was raw wood in keeping with the theme.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, in line with these images, I went to the cemetery in Port Glasgow high up on a hill, close to wear my mother-in-law resides, and I took images there. Here are the contact sheets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my Who triptych, I’ve decided on a portrait format. It seems somehow right to have them side by side. I’ve never really enjoyed the horizontal/landscape. Even in my pen and ink drawings, the paper is always in portrait.
Below are the images I am thinking, out of all the hundreds I took, that I think would work best.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now I only need to decide, and put together my triptych. Below I am showing showing my process of choosing images. I open photoshop, create a storyboard of sorts and then start inserting images I am choosing from.
Tumblr media
After careful consideration, and after choosing images based on how they flow together, and what each image means to me, I have chosen the 3 below to be in my triptych. I wanted them to have a dreaminess about them, because when I am where I need to be to heal, it indeed feels like a dream.

20 Unmissable Social Media Tips for Artists
Edit Entry

If you’re a new artist, new to Social Media or just trying to increase your business we’ve put together 20 useful tips to help you get started. We’ll help you navigate through the ways to increase your audience and some tips on what not to do as well! Check out our blog here.
1 Consistency is Key
Be consistent across your social media platforms. Present a consistent, professional face to your audience.  Have separate personal and professional accounts and a consistent artist statement and ‘voice’ across all of them. By all means share the cat memes and political jokes on your personal pages but keep them off your professional pages, unless your professional work is Cat memes or Political cartoons, in which case go ahead and share!
2 Branding, Branding, Branding
This relates to using the same name across your Social Media accounts, similar wording, same logo or avatar. It also goes back to being consistent.  Establish the name and use it everywhere, so people can find and recognize you and your work. Luckily there are an increasing number of businesses been set up to help artists with their marketing and branding such as Fine Art Tips by Lori McNee’s site and ArtBizSucess
3 Post Frequently
Keep on posting! Post daily for maximum effect. Post more than once a day to build your presence. Keep posting. There are tools out there that allow you to schedule posts. Use them to their full effect, and schedule posts at various time of the day and night. Your audience may be in another country so post in their evenings, their mornings as well as in your own time zone.
4 Share and Share Alike
Social Media is a form of networking to connect with other artists, share ideas and inspirations, and share support for each other. However, also be aware that quantity of followers is not necessarily the goal. Follow people whose work you truly admire, not just like for like. Follow some well-known artists, and see what they post about, the frequency of their posts and the message they send.        This site has some nice info and articles about best practise for social media for artists.
5 #Hashtag #Highlights
Hashtags should be used to draw attention to the key themes or points of your post. So for art related tagging you can use the theme of the work, the colour scheme, the title of the work, your name if it is different to the name of your Social Media account; try not to use the same tags all the time, some platforms will penalize you for that.
6 Hashtag Tools
There are tools for finding trending hashtags and this can be very helpful to get your posts in front of a new audience. However, it’s only really effective if your posts align with the theme of the hashtag. Don’t go posting a bunch of unrelated ‘trendy’ tags to draw in people, it will look spammy and work against you.
7 Be Vocal and Unique
Have your own style and voice. This will develop over time with most people but it’s something to be aware of from the start. You want people to see a post and instantly recognize it as your voice, your work from the moment they see it come up on their feed, even if they don’t notice who posted it.
8 I tube, YouTube
If your work is highly visual consider a YouTube channel. You can use it to showcase skills, demonstrate techniques or simply show time lapse of your work being created. People love to see video ‘behind the scenes’ and with a half decent cell phone and good lighting you’d be surprised how easy this is to do. If you don’t want to talk to the audience use copyright free background music with some simple editing software to package your video.
9 You Teach
Some artists take their YouTube channel and branch out into teaching others how to paint, draw, and create. This builds their brand and many people have become quite successful in their fields from starting on YouTube.
10 Free Tools make good sense
Make good use of free tools online to assist with managing Social Media posting and content packaging. Hootsuite is one that offers a basic free account for 3 Social channels. There are several others out there also, Buffer, TweetDeck for Twitter users, and more!
11 Become a Blogger
A blog is an opportunity to share more than your art with others. Many people use it to share aspects of their day, things that inspire them; all the unique things that make YOU stand out. This helps build loyalty with your followers. Again, use discretion on posting personal news and views that may offend your audience.
12 Connect with your community
Local knowledge and local support cannot be underestimated. Sure, your friends and family are there for you, but you need to build new connections also. Reach out to your community pages on Facebook; check their rules on promoting your own pages, blogs or sale sites.
13 Give it your best shot!
It really is important when sharing pictures of your completed work to have the highest quality images online. Invest in a good camera if you can. It doesn’t even have to be a new camera but one that can take high-resolution pictures is best. If you are a painter it’s good to take pictures of your work outdoors under natural light. That gives the best colour resolution.
14 Make a Statement
On your Social Media sites, there will be an About Me section. This is where you should put an Artist’s Statement, introducing yourself, your motivations for making and creating, your recurring themes, current works and enough about yourself to pique the interest of your audience. Keep it up to date.
15 Self Promotion is good for the soul
Get out there on Social Media. Promote your art, your upcoming showings, and your next big thing. Are you changing direction in your themes? Moving from one medium to another? Tell your audience; generate excitement in your brand. We enjoyed this article on 10 ways to UNSUCCESSFULLY market yourself as an artist
16 Get out of your rut!
Sometimes it’s too easy to get into a pattern of formulaic posts. Shake things up from time to time. Post at different times of the day. Increase the frequency of your posts for a week to generate more engagement with your followers. Add video to your posts. Try new styles. Challenge yourself and bring your followers along with the journey!
Tumblr media
17 Your product is your focus
Sure, it’s easy to be distracted when creating a new social media channel, making backgrounds, choosing fonts on blogs, creating logos and adding buttons! But is that what you are actually promoting? Your focus is your product. Don’t distract your audience with a bunch of unnecessary bells and whistles; you want them to look at your art.
18 Analyse This
Use tools available on the web to analyse your Social Media reach. If you are using a Social Media scheduling program they include reporting functions so you can check engagement, likes, comments and determine things like best time of day to post, who is reading, who is commenting. There is also Google analytics that can be added to many sites to see where people are visiting from, what pages they look at and how long they visit your site. It will help you immensely to see what is working and what is not attracting and keeping people interested.
19 Connect the dots
Make connections. Grow your network in real life and bring them online to your pages. Ask friends to share and invite like-minded people to your Social Media presence. Put your art out there in appropriate locations to sell and to promote your brand. Have it framed and have your Instagram, Facebook or YouTube channel on the matting in the frame, on a card attached to the frame, or some visible place. Run contests for followers who bring new fans to your sites. Keep sharing and showing your work online and in the real world too.
20 Make Art
No matter how many posts you make across every Social Media channel there is, you still need to take time out to actually create Art. Use a planner, make a schedule, or use phone reminders to set limits on your Social Media time so you don’t get sucked into the abyss of time-wasting online. Get on, do what you need to do and then get offline and go make something!
We hope you’ve found some of these tips helpful. The key to all of this is to get yourself out there and get involved, and most of all have fun doing it!

5 Creative Ways to Sell Your Arts and Crafts This Holiday Season
An Artist’s Guide to “Gift Selling”
‘Tis the holiday season of giving, so why not make it a profitable one, too? If you are planning to sell your handmade arts and crafts during the holidays, then this post is for you!
To make sure you, your patrons and your wallets are filled with festivity and goodwill, we’ve put together a list of quick and easy ways to give your artistic offerings a bit of holiday cheer. Here’s to a profitable season for you, artists! Enjoy!
Custom Bundles
Gift baskets filled with goodies are always a hit, so why not create one with your art? If your specialty is acrylic paintings of landscapes, for instance, try scaling them down, way down. Create an assortment of mini landscape paintings, perhaps with a winter theme, tied with a pretty bow.
An art bundle of small paintings could equate to the size of one, large canvas when you put them all together. Keeping in mind your material and labor expenses, you could price these tiny but mighty bundles similarly to your full-size paintings, but market them as holiday specials perfect for art-lovers.
Another art gift set idea is to make inexpensive prints of your most popular artworks in a variety of sizes and correlating prices. What’s more, consider offering to frame the print(s) at an additional cost. That way customers not only can purchase their favorite art pieces at a fraction of the price, but they also don’t have to worry about taking the extra step to get them framed. Do these as limited editions that you sell to your email clients exclusively, and you just might put the Black Friday lines to shame.
Coupons and Incentives During the Holiday Season
Bundles not an option, or you want to find more ways to boost sales this holiday season? Consider offering special pricing, coupons and incentives. For example, take part in Cyber Monday (the Monday after Thanksgiving) or Small Business Saturday on November 25 by offering a flash sale on your artwork.
Don’t have time to prepare for Cyber Monday or Small Business Saturday this year? Create your own one-day-only event! Offer a percentage off your art selection, free shipping and/or an array of BOGO (buy one painting, get one drawing or study) deals. And, you could even try mixing all three of those options together for one, mega holiday sale!
If a customer spends X amount of money, for instance, he or she can get free shipping; or if a client buys one painting, he or she could get another one for 50% off — plus free shipping if they spend over $100. The best part is: What you offer your customers during your holiday sale is entirely up to you.
Card Gift Sets and Holiday-Specific Art Pieces
Another great way to make more money this holiday season is to climb on board the festive frenzy train by offering holiday-centric goodies to your customers from custom cards to seasonal-inspired artworks.
And, if you really are feeling the holiday spirit, take a few notes from the money-making tips above by throwing a few sales, bundles and BOGOs into the mix.
Pro tip: It’s important to note not every customer celebrates the same holidays or in the same way, so make sure to include a variety of offerings, whether it is holiday-specific — such as Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas or New Years — or more general seasonal tidings for all to enjoy.
Community and Online Events
Whether you have your own website, finding alternative ways to spread the word about your art is always a good practice. And, around the holiday season is no different.
Check to see if there are any local fairs and events taking place in your community, and ask libraries and park(s) if any holiday festivities are being offered. If so, find out if they will allow you to promote and/or sell your art. Even if they say you can only pass out flyers, you are still garnering more exposure which can lead to more sales down the line. Add fliers and a bit of hot apple cider, and you’ll have people clamoring to talk to you. And with Small Business Saturday right around the corner, there may be opportunities aplenty around town for you to check out and take part in!
If community events and gatherings won’t work, or if this just isn’t your speed, try setting up shop digitally. You don’t have to have your own website to sell your art to customers online. There are tons of arts and crafts sites that will let you sell your work and set your own price, such as Etsy.
Even if you do have your own website, or decide to take part in local functions around town, utilizing online websites geared toward selling arts and crafts can be a great additional way to make profits during this peak buying time of the year.
Being Savvy…Social Savvy
Social media can be so much more than a way to stay connected with your family and friends. It can be used as a key tool to promote your art.
Keep your friends, family and customers updated on your latest projects, sales and available artworks. Share pictures of your work via your social platforms. And, if you have one, provide a link to your online shop page, whether your personal website or a third-party arts and crafts site.
If you are a little more familiar with the ins and outs of social media, you could take your marketing up a notch by using hashtags on platforms like Instagram and Twitter as a way to market your art. For example, if you are trying to sell your new watercolor painting of a cityscape, make sure to tag it on Instagram with hashtags such as #artsales, #watercolorpaintings, #cityscapepaintings, #artforsale, etc., and include a link in your bio to where people can find more information.
Likewise, if you are on Pinterest, try creating boards for specific art media, subjects or even sales and promotions you are offering.
Snow Scene at Argenteuil by Claude Monet
Regardless if you prefer online or in-person interactions with customers, taking advantage of the holiday season is a great way to not only add a little more cushion to your wallet but also to help others provide the perfect gift for the special art-lovers in their lives.
If you want even more tips and tricks for making money as an artist, then be sure to check out Lori McNee’s Fine Art Tips Business Bundle. Filled with tips from top artists for more successful artworks and ways to make more money online, this resource is sure to help you jumpstart your art career.
Happy holidays, artists! We hope it is a joyous, and profitable, season.

Sparkling Light on Water | An Oil Painting Demo
Ah, the beginning of a new year. I hope you’ve had a chance to set a resolution, perhaps one that’s related to your art. If one of your goals is to sell more art this year, then a great place to start is with Lori McNee’s Fine Art Tips Business Bundle. With 26 step-by-step demonstrations in acrylic, pastel and oil painting and professional advice from 24 acclaimed artists, you’ll have enough information to keep you motivated all year long!
Today’s featured artist is Brent Cotton, who Lori describes as “a man who is inspired and haunted by water.” I was captivated by his painting Drifting in Time and I think you will be, too. His oil painting lesson is included here, where you’ll also find one of Brent’s art business tips, additional info on portraying intense light, and more. ~Cherie
Oil Painting Demonstration: Sparkling Light on Water
by Brent Cotton
This misty and moody early morning scene of a drift boat and fly fisherman is the type of subject that really gets me excited. My reference for this painting was just a poor-quality cell phone photo my wife took of me, my dad and my brother in my drift boat on the Bitterroot River in western Montana, my home river. I liked the overall composition but wanted to change the color and lighting to make it more dramatic. I also changed the pose of the figure out front and gave the impression of a line of trees in the background that the light was shining through.
Reference photo for Brent’s oil painting
The simplicity of the boat and water without much in the way of background or detail inspired me.
  Step 1
1. Start the Drawing and Mid-Values. With a no. 14 filbert bristle brush, begin scumbling in a background color with opaque oil paint (Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light and a little Viridian) thinned a bit with alkyd medium. Apply it thinly over all the linen, aiming for a middle value that will work well with the lights and darks that will come later. Let this underlying color dry for a couple of days before painting the boat and figures over the top.
Once dry, draw in the main subject with a soft synthetic no. 4 filbert and paint that has been thinned with alkyd medium to improve the flow and gloss. The dry background makes it easy to wipe off any mistakes in the drawing.
  Step 2
2. Fill in the Drawing. Now, begin to fill in the drawing outline, working from darker to lighter where the boat will be backlit. The boat and figures are made up of Transparent Oxide Brown, Cadmium Red Light, Yellow Ochre and a small amount of Cobalt Blue. For this step use nos. 2, 4 and 6 synthetic filberts to fill in the outline, but be careful not to obliterate the drawing.
  Step 3
3. Add the Light. Next, move to the streak of light that appears to be com- ing through the trees and reflecting onto the water. Establish the darkest darks and lightest lights early on so you can judge all the other values based on those two extremes. Use Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Yellow, and Titanium White applied with a palette knife. Lay the paint on thickly, impasto in spots, and in other areas just drag the knife with very little paint. Let the knife hit the tops of the weave, which gives it a sparkly or grainy effect. For this step and all others that require a palette knife, I used a Holbein hand-forged steel palette knife and my trusty finger or thumb “brush” to soften.
  Step 4
4. Blend the Light. Blend and soften the edges where the boat meets the water and is strongly backlit. I wear gloves when I paint because I’m always using my thumb or fingers to blend and push the paint around.
Use a palette knife and continue to refine the drawing with color that is a very close match to the background color. Lay this on thinly with the knife and drag across the background, painting the negative shapes around the boat and figures and creating a variety of edges where they meet. Continue to soften and blend with your trusty finger and thumb brush.
  Step 5
5. Intensify the Highlights. Refine the drawing on the boat and figures and increase the contrast by putting in intense highlights. In this step, edges and values are important to get the feeling of backlighting. Work from the end of the boat, up to the standing figure. Refine his form and put a fly rod in his outstretched arm. If you look closely, you can see the fly line that is being cast by the fisherman. For this, drag the palette knife very carefully in one pass and vary it along the way to simulate being hit by the light. Put the oar in the same way.
Drifting in Time (oil on linen, 18×24) by Brent Cotton, cottonfinearts.com
6. Indicate Motion and Reflected Light. As you can see, I also brought more light down into the water to give the impression of movement and liquidity. Put a few ripple marks in the water to indicate motion and reflected light. Create the ripples with the palette knife, both in a drag- ging fashion and applying more impasto in spots.
Last, glaze some darker color into the corners of the painting with paint thinned with alkyd medium. This has increased the “pop” of the finished piece.
Materials Used in This Oil Painting Demonstration
Support: 18″ × 24″ alkyd primed linen mounted to .5 inch Gator board
Oil Paints: Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Titanium White, Transparent Oxide Brown, Viridian, Yellow Ochre
Brushes: Nos. 2, 4, 6, 14 filberts
Other Supplies: Alkyd medium, citrus thinner, latex gloves, palette knives, paper towels, solvent
Brent’s fine art tips for creating the illusion of intense light:
The edges have to be soft and lost in spots getting progressively harder as they move away from the light. This will give the illusion of intense light.
The linen has a fair amount of tooth and the knife really picks up the texture when paint is dragged across it lightly. This does a great job of simulating light sparkling on water.
Brent’s Art Business Tip:
A professional artist is a person who derives his living solely from art, but also someone who takes his talent and skill seriously and works hard at developing his own style and voice. A professional artist consistently produces quality works and moves the viewer in some way. An art degree doesn’t make a professional. I know plenty of artists who are doing very well and have no degrees whatsoever. They’ve just put in the time and made it happen through sheer will and determination.
Artist Profile on Brent Cotton
By Lori McNee
“No man enters the same river twice, for the river has changed and so has the man.”—Heraclitus
Brent Cotton is a man who is inspired and haunted by water. He grew up on his family’s cattle ranch in Idaho, where his love of the rivers and the outdoors led him to pursue art. After years of refining his artistic direction by working with world-renowned mentors such as Howard Terpning, Brent’s paintings have evolved into elegant, poetic landscapes. “God’s glory” and the fleeting effects of light on the landscape inspire Brent. His works bring a sense of nostalgia and peace to the viewer.
The first time I saw a Brent painting was while attending the Arts for the Parks national exhibition in 2003. It’s rare that a single painting stays etched in my mind, but Evensong did just that. I still remember the silhouette of the lone canoe gliding along sepia-toned, placid waters, leaving only a sliver of shimmering golden reflections in its wake—truly breathtaking.
