ronance circus au

okay guys... i know that this sounds a little crazy... silly if u will... but this au SPOKE to me and i must talk about it right now

for some basics of the au: the upside down does not exist, some ages are messed around with as in how old some of the characters are when certain events happen, and in the present day both nancy and robin are 22. also imagine this circus is cruelty free fuck actual circuses.

okay disclaimers out of the way lets get clowning

starting with nancy: imagine... u ran away at 14 with ur little brother from ur reagan stan parents because they suspected you were a lesbian after ur best friend died (they were right but still fuck them) and always thought your brother was a bit homosexual, they were gonna send you away anyways so you run off to indianapolis and encounter the fucking circus bro! at first them seeking help in the circus almost gets them sent home since this ragtag circus doesn’t want to be responsible for a missing persons report, but they see these desperate kids who just want to be themselves and they let them stay under the condition that they lay low.

originally it wasn’t nancy’s plan to join the circus, just earn some money doing small jobs so that she could support herself and mike, but being surrounded by the world’s miscellaneous treasures tends to get you to reveal any talents you have early. nancy is found to have insanely good aim. she hardly had to practice to nail darts, then throwing knives, then axes, then arrows, and eventually she’s nothing short of a sharpshooter. at this point she’s sixteen, and the circus unanimously agrees that they want her to join the show, but they want her to wear a mask to keep her identity somewhat a secret, and she readily agrees, because masks are cool and she gets to perform.

u thought i was only gonna give nancy one specialty but ur wrong. she’s too awesome for that. this thought was inspired by one thing: nancy using a fucking WHIP. that’s right, lion tamer nancy with a TWIST.

obviously nancy doesn’t want to mistreat animals, it was never gonna be an act she’d even remotely consider before an unseen chain of events. the lions give birth and she takes part in the process on volunteer basis and basically gets imprinted on by the cubs. a male and female, and they latch onto her like nobody’s business. they only let her touch them on a regular basis and eventually, when they’re old enough to, just follow her around. she’s always had a soft spot for animals and having lions follow her around is So Sick, so she accepts them with open arms and they grow up together. at one point, somebody suggests she makes an act out of it. she’s talented at showy whipcracking and has even messed with fire, why not put on a show and pretend to be a lion tamer? it goes off really well, nancy looks awesome and the lions like the attention, and this particular show of hers becomes a fan favorite.

also in general i think nancy is a bit of a different person because of this? as well as mike, she’s way more free with her feelings and who she is, i think she’s way more open to being vulnerable and expressing how she feels than she is in canon because she was freed from such an oppressive household and put into an environment that was nothing but self expression.

the lion’s names are vasir and shiva :)

onto robin! robin is also a runaway, but she ran away at 17 and it took her a few months to really end up with the circus after running away since she wasn’t questioned nearly as much as nancy and mike would have been. robin’s desire to run away is less her strange and dysfunctional parents but more hawkins, this oppressive monster of a small town that she can’t stand anymore. she can’t be anyone she really wants to be in hawkins without being ripped apart. think operation croissant but she sees europe as unattainable so instead she runs off to the big city nearby instead, living very small paycheck to very small paycheck before impulsively joining the circus as a stagehand after seeing they were looking for new help, desperate to travel.

she starts by operating the box office, selling corndogs, working backstage, selling merchandise, sweeping, all supportive stuff, but the career on it’s own isn’t super fulfilling. she actually loves the circus, all of the acts are mesmerizing and it’s probably one of the only places in the world where there isn’t any judgement, where she’s very tentatively herself. she makes good friends, slowly blending more into the performers circle than the other stagehands since the performers tended to be more eccentric. it doesn’t take long for her to be on a first name basis with everyone, except for one performer. the masked lion tamer, with a killer aim and a laugh that lights up a room.

robin has seen her multiple times of course, even been in group conversations involving her, but she’s never spoken to her directly and no one really mentions her by name, and it doesn’t take long for robin to notice that pretty much everyone is keeping something from her. it doesn’t seem malicious, but it’s definitely suspicious, and she settles on finding it out with time, because she’s just been offered to join the show as a background clown after showing interest.

safe to say robin excels, she’s insanely good at physical comedy and is always pretty eye catching for her seamless mesh of actual talent and genuine clumsiness. eventually she’s given more elaborate costumes and makeup and is given more time to solo, she figures out juggling and starts doing more skits in bigger segments of the show, which was actually pretty daunting at first but she quickly fell into it when it was clear people liked what she did.

guess what time it is times up its clown au hcs time

I KNOW i said i was gonna do a villainess au post but i actually lied that’s gonna happen later sorry gay people

-nancy in this au is a lot more free with her emotions and also a LOT better at lying because of it. this nancy isn’t always surviving off half truths, confident in the sense that she officially gives 0 fucks about what people think

-robin openly being a lesbian to the circus gang and also more confident in general makes her a bit of a heartbreaker (jealous nancy fans (PRE RELATIONSHIP‼️) rise)

-after nancy reveals herself she and robin train together frequently despite having like 0 spheres in common. nancy just thinks robin is wicked funny and robin likes women that could kick her ass

-vasir and shiva like robin a lot but mess with her frequently. they know she’s scared stiff of them even though they’d never actually hurt her, so they’ll prank her all the time

-that being said: robin having nancy in her lap and receiving death glares from two ominous pairs of eyes across the room😭

-the founding of nancy and robin’s relationship is nancy being desperate to learn about her hometown and robin being desperate to learn about nancy. this goes away VERY quickly in the face of the fact that nancy finds robin way more interesting than anything in hawkins and robin finds that nancy is way more happy with her present than her past.

-robin shares a train car with two other clowns and they start calling the nights she stays there with them sleepovers since she starts staying with nancy in her private car more frequently (even if that means waking up to see shiva 2 inches from her face)

-robin and nancy are the fan favorites, robin in comedy and nancy in wow factor

-someone said aerial gymnast robin and though i don’t fully think that fits since robin is so clumsy i DEFINITELY think she gets lovingly bullied into being tossed around during the trapeze act as added comedy

-despite their acts being so separate nancy and robin always bow together at the end of shows

-after every show robin and nancy have a tradition where they sit on top of nancy’s train car and share cotton candy they stole and look at the stars and talk, sometimes with nancy’s head in robin’s lap where robin DEF puts cotton candy on nancy’s nose (when they kiss its extra sweet)

-when nancy and robin got closer nancy took on applying robin’s clown makeup and always giving robin something new and fun, straddling her in the process ofc (if u see nancy leaving robin’s stall with blue lips no u literally didn’t)

-tbh idk how i feel about other people from hawkins being in the circus but if someone tries to convince me i will ABSOLUTELY add elmax to this (eleven is still experimented on but for weird “the 80’s hates anyone that isn’t normal” reasons not the upside down and she runs into the circus and max runs away from her shit ass family)

-and yeah ronance mothers them

-robin always gets nancy a flower from every new place they visit, nancy keeps them all pressed in a box in her car

-nancy watching and aching from afar every time a potential suitor approaches robin is real idk. the first person she really feels like she loves since barb and so many people are vying for her attention, its hard to believe she’d be first pick, but robin eventually proves that she is

-robin being so in love with nancy its insane. robin will just look at nancy and be told to keep it in her pants

-nancy always touching robin, holding hands or locking arms or leaning against her or in her lap or the occasional piggyback ride that ends with them laughing as they fall down

-robin for the first time really confiding in someone, sharing everything she feels instead of safe and snarky remarks, and it feels good to be open, to not be afraid that someone will turn away when she rambles or says something they don’t like.

-robin making new masks for nancy that get progressively better with time. nancy’s favorites are the ones with pink and ribbons

time to CLOWN AROUND‼️‼️

imagine, robin buckley just living her life in the circus, being the best clown she can be, when she suddenly swears she’s seeing lions out of the corner of her eye that disappear when she turns to confirm. very suspicious, especially since she KNOWS those lions and they belong to the masked entertainer that she knows suspiciously little about.

she asks around, if the lions just stalk random people for fun, and everyone is confused because “shiva and vasir are both very well trained, they don’t do that” and robin is like Ok Well They Are and is officially a bit freaked out bc these lions are huge and they’re officially not leaving her alone

it all comes to a head when she’s suddenly herded, both of them cornering her and forcing her to go where they want her to. robin easily complies because shiva looks like she bites and maybe she’ll finally find out what they’re doing

i definitely didn’t mention this but this is a train circus! if u have ur own act u have ur own car for all ur silly needs and robin is taken to the elusive lion tamer’s car and is like “oh my god finally”

when she knocks the door slides open and there she stands, mask and all, in her unfairly attractive practice uniform with leather wrist guards and shirt that rides up just slightly, enough to catch robin’s attention.

the lion tamer doesn’t seem keen on pleasantries, simply gesturing for robin to enter as she turned to sit on her couch, where her lions immediately joined her and lounged around her. scary.

she doesn’t say anything and robin is forced to ask why she’s there, what she wants because her lions are scary and won’t leave her alone. and because it’s robin she asks even more questions, why no one will tell her anything about her, why she wears the mask, does shiva bite?

that’s when nancy takes off her mask and robin audibly gasps, because how do you not recognize the girl your age from your small town that went missing with her little brother? a perfect girl to another missing person, rumors spread. and here she is, in the circus, obviously living her best life.

robin tries to ask a flurry of questions but nancy stops her and asks what she wants to know, asks if robin is really from hawkins like the others said, if she knows anything about her parents or her brother’s friends or the few friends she’d left behind? and robin now knows what her coworkers were hiding, at least until now, they didn’t want robin to let anything spill about nancy, but now nancy was coming to her. she didn’t seem desperate to be seen, to prove something, just to know the state of the town she left behind, because the town was cruel and oppressive but its where she grew up. where she left everything behind.

robin is stunned, a thousand more questions popping into her mind that she bites back in favor of answering nancy’s. that nancy’s parents stopped looking for them awhile ago, that ted is unchanged and karen is, different. robin mentions that karen always looked regretful when she saw her, though she doesn’t know why, and that seems to really piss nancy off.

before robin can answer anything else nancy thanks her in a clipped tone and asks her to leave, and she readily complies.

right after the door closes she’s pounced on by a few of the other performers, desperate to know what she’s been told so that they know what to talk about now, and when robin tells them they all share this look and cautiously continue the conversation, quick to reassure robin that nancy asking her to leave was nothing personal, that her parents were a sore subject, but they don’t elaborate.

robin is officially more confused than before and she thinks its gonna be hell having to repress all of that, out of respect for a nancy wheeler who’s way different than she ever imagined, who looks like she wouldn’t take kindly to someone asking questions she doesn’t want to answer, but she’s quickly corrected when the next day nancy seeks her out, and asks if she wants to eat lunch with her.

robin is cautiously optimistic, at least this means nancy isn’t mad at her, and she might even get some answers to some nagging questions.
