POP ART: Incons that latter / Maillol Museum
Tumblr media
Composed by a part of the permanent exhibition of the Withney museum of American art, POP ART presents us the most emblematic artists of a contemporary USA. Through several well-known examples, we see the evolution of an artistic style represented by figures such as Jasper Jons, Roy Lichtenstein, Any Wharol or Jim Dine. The Maillol Museum allowed me to discover POPIST works that enclose a postwar period principles from the 60s to the end of the 70s.
Through the power of images, the message of "the American way of life" is transmitted on many occasions with humor and irony, allowing all kinds of criticism. Even the work POPISME created by Warhol, represented a parody of all those artistic genres finished in -isme as surréalisme, cubisme ...

The art of the media led by Linchestein in 1961 was illustrated by comic books painting inspired mainly of its panels. Pure colors, black-outlined contours and multi-point fillings personalize a popular literature as the picture "Girl at window" shows us. This style so characteristic of Linchestein was enriched of other revolutionary icons like Picasso, Matisse or Léger. Rauschenberg was also inspired by the media, by taking into account objects of daily life reminding us "La Fontaine" by Marcel Duchamp. Being the first to compose his paintings with pieces of newspaper, his crayons reveal an iconography easy to understand with works like Modern Inferno.

Jim Dine and his work "En prévision du bras cassé" recall again Duchamp's redymade style whose central object is a snow shovel. The curiosity that differentiates Dine from the other artists is the psychological side added to his works like "Arcangelo" or "L'équipée sauvage", explaining his obsession by the freeways that decorate the Newyorkino landscape. This geometry allows to represent abstract images from the perspective of a motorist perceiving two worlds from the rear view mirror.

Representing a critique of all the sexist clichés, the pin up of Mel Ramos reminds the central point of his world. In "Tabacco Rhoda" the artist ironically compares a woman's body with a commodity, being at the same time a victim of a culture inspiration. In spite of that it evokes the eroticism of the myth of Léda and the swan belonging to the classic mythology.

The portrait of Andy Warhol's "Marilyn Monroe" ends the visit of an ambivalent pop art. Many experts criticized this style of being too simple and not requiring any intellectual effort. Robert Indiana defined it during an interview: "c'est le rêve américain, optimiste, généreux et naîf". Something present in his famous sculpture LOVE, which shows at the same time the propaganda of a slogan consumed by the spectators.
