#like I'm sure you've heard Sebastian's radios of agony in 2021/2022 for a single point

“[I was] afraid that at some point I wouldn’t be good enough and that no team would want me anymore. I wanted to decide for myself. That’s all we can do, it’s perfect. The end.”
Why would Nico think that? Has he seen an example like that in the past and tried to avoid it, or was just a scenario. And in the end not worth continuing
I mean every athlete faces a natural decline that comes with aging. most f1 world champions finish far past their prime because it's a very lucrative paycheck, and smaller/backbench teams would get the advertising and backing that comes with having an experienced driver/former world champion on their roster. some examples that make it easier to contextualize:
jenson button (2009 WDC) retired 15th in the 2016 championship with 21 points total
kimi (2007 WDC) retired 16th in the 2021 championship with 10 points total
seb vet (4 time WDC) retired 12th (in that aston??? impressive) in the 2022 championship with 37 points total
these are all world champions, all who once finished 1st in the championship, and retired no longer even in the top 10.
i can't speak for nico's personal feelings ofc, only showing that there is historical precedent that even when you're a wc there will be a time top teams won't want you anymore, and you have to make the choice whether you want to stay at the back fighting for a single point (which, if you're accustomed to winning, is probably a bitter pill to swallow compared to if you've never won at all, a la hulkenberg) or retire. and nico wanted to retire on his terms.
