How long have you been playing the Sims?

Since December 2008! (ironically, this is also the month when my character Rick came to life). A few months before that, my school friend gave me ts1 and I unsuccessfully tried to play it, but it was crashing so it doesn’t count. However, December was when she gave me ts2: life stories and I was hopelessly hooked.

Fun fact: my first family were actually Rick, Cami and their mom, and the twins kept fighting to the point they had a -100 relationship. My second family was Kay's family and I forgot to buy them a toilet so they were peeing themselves all the time.

How long have you been a Simblr and why did you become one?

Oh boy, I made my simblr in October 2013 when I learned about the tumblr community from my old simmer friends. I haven't posted anything in a while, just followed people, but later I started posting ts2 premades content. I remember my first posts were pictures of Ripp Grunt, since I was an edgy 16 year old who obsessively listened to Simple Plan (still a guilty pleasure lol) and found Ripp relatable because he was such a sad boi and a Rebel.

Later I switched to ts3 because I was inspired by some people (hmm? Who could that be?) and wanted to start a legacy, and then found character creation and development in this game to be really easy and fun. I still have a ts2 simblr tho - @strange-mel (currently it's inactive but I hope to pick it up soon because I have ts2 backlog to post)

What type of Simblr are you?

For me, my favourite part of the game is the whole creative process. I like making sims and then seeing them come alive (if I'm lucky) and doing stories with them - some experimental, some more serious.

I also like developing an aesthetic and I enjoy how my sims/screenshots are vibrant and full of color - sometimes I can just look at them and feel happy. I’m rather self-critical, but my sims aesthetic is something I’m really proud of.

I consider myself a storytelling simblr, although right now I'm on a break since my major story ended recently, so I’m just vibing and doing photoshoots and random stuff. (though, there’s still a lot of stories in my head, and it’s a shame I don’t have enough energy for them all)

Which generation of Sims do you primarily play?

Ts3 is my jam! I love ts2 but play it very rarely and when I'm in a mood for premades (I don't really play with my sims in ts2, just premades), and lately I've been playing more ts4, which I used to dislike but it's grown on me (though, it's mostly good for photoshoots, I still find the gameplay kinda boring)

10.01 thoughts (or basically a rambly recap, very spoilery, with a lot of caps lock abuse) under the cut!!! :D

JERRY’S BEEN SHOT. that’s not actually a surprise at this point in any way, but oh gosh, poor guy. “it hurts more than i thought it would.” oh no. :c

i’m confused though - grover’s there calling an ambulance, jerry is bleeding, steve is keeping pressure on the wound, but where’s danny? clutching his heart out of frame? OH WAIT he could be arresting ezra hassan, i suppose?

on screen: 2 weeks later. jfdkfjdk they resolved that cliffhanger in like, under thirty seconds.

love jerry’s longer curly hair! REALLY LOVE that jerry and junior are playing battleship, omg.

jerry thought about HIS DND BUDDIES WHEN HE GOT SHOT. i love him. (i’m also both worried about his mental health and glad they’re showing him actually feeling some repercussions from getting shot, aside from the flesh wound.)

tani and junior!!! are going to the opera!!! wonderful, i’m into it.

AH. here we have steve on his date, omfg. it all looks so pretty - the background, the restaurant, the date, steve. REALLY AWKWARD conversation though, fjdkfd. steve’s been hanging with danny too much - as soon as someone asks “what are you thinking” he just opens up his heart.

“it’s just crazy, you know. things that happen at work.” FDJKFDJF i’m glad he’s seeing that AFTER NINE YEARS.

DANNY CALLS. i’ve seen the clips that were drifting around tumblr, so i knew it was going to happen, but still. DANNY CALLS. IN THE MIDDLE OF STEVE’S DATE.

“i think it’s best,” steve says, about taking a phone call from danny while he’s in the middle of a first date with a really pretty woman who seems very kind about his total awkwardness, oh BOY

the WAY danny says “hi” just already has me in stitches. i die. and then steve’s “dude! i don’t know.” he sounds so frustrated! poor guy.

“words are kinda just, they’re falling out of my mouth, i don’t know why.” OH STEVE. also: that’s 80% of all fic in which steve finally confesses his feelings to danny ever. thank you, canon, for giving us a steve who is canonically prone to this.

“do you have any game at all?” danny asks, of steve, WHO HE IS CALLING IN THE MIDDLE OF A DATE. the co-dependency here is HIGH and it’s probably unhealthy but i’m enjoying it a lot, truly.

okay so, steve says “you’ve called twice, we haven’t even ordered!” and then DANNY SAYS “if you answered my texts, i wouldn’t have to call” and that’s just ALL SO BAD. they are TERRIBLE together and that woman should probably run far away.

danny! way to build up steve’s confidence on this date by telling him his thing is awkward and messing things up, holy shit.

I’M SCREAMING. “that was danny. who i love. very much.” I AM YELLING. YES. GOOD. PREMIUM CONTENT.

just. i love “i love you”s, okay. i love them. we got one (1) in s9 at the end of 9.01, but we’re off to a good start now in 10.01, with steve telling his frigging date that he loves danny, oh my.

IT GOT WORSE. i paused like, in the middle of steve’s sentence, and then as soon as i hit play the date said “sounds like my ex” and steve says “you know, it’s funny that you say that, because it’s kind of like a marriage” and uh, hello steve, i made a gifset about that the day before yesterday, thank you for giving me an update, but also just. wtf. wtf holy shit

i. i just. this is supposedly steve on a date with a woman being all heterosexual, but it’s really an extremely mcdanno scene, like ten times more than i was prepared for, wow.

real talk though, i’m almost certain this relationship isn’t going anywhere, but this woman seems really cool!!! i love her so far.

tani is actually enjoying the opera and junior seems to be paying more attention to her than the stage and i have no idea if this is actually an officially official date between them or if they’re still “just friends”, but it’s all so cute. and then, of course, some anonymous guy shows up with a sketchy briefcase that’s inevitably going to contain weapons, but oh well, it was nice for how long it lasted.

a slightly updated intro!!! katrina law is already in it (which i like) and the new group shot is kind of crowded but really nice, but fjdkfdjkdf they chose a really awkward moment where adam is supposedly typing something on the tech table but he’s REALLY OBVIOUSLY just randomly tapping his fingers on it. that’s going to haunt me. oh dear show runners, why.

danny... says steve was blowing his date, as they arrive on the crime scene that junior and tani found, and steve says he has a second date and danny goes “you got a second date?” incredulously and almost dismayed and that just really sounds like he WANTED steve to blow it. what is this, danny, setting steve up with a pretty woman from steve’s school to test him? see if he’ll say no and fall in your arms instead, and when he doesn’t, you’re disappointed?

even the lighting in this random stairwell gun fight chase scene is kind of pretty! the blue and red? i like it.

oh NO, steve, you’re not even ten minutes into a new season and you’re chasing some suicidally parcouring bad guy across roof tops and into a jump that’s REALLY going to give danny a heart attack, jesus.

fdjkfd danny telling steve that ten years ago he would’ve made that jump? telling him he’s forty? i’m not sure if that’s kind of mean or really good, but it might be both.

plot stuff happens, but i keep getting distracted by all the grey in steve’s beard and his new, longer hair. it’s good.

i like quinn’s introduction!!! i really do, more than i’d expected. and honestly, that déjà vu thing lenkov was talking about is very faint to me, to the point where it’s mostly just there because danny says it out loud in the text and then forcibly makes it so. they’re not in steve’s garage, it’s the wrong car they’re standing next to, there are three people instead of two and there’s no “one, two, three” and showing badges, but steve yeets his badge over the windshield of the car in quinn’s direction. the similarity isn’t that strong.

danny going “i gotta follow him” about steve and “i don’t know [shrugs]” about where they’re going is beautiful.

i’m about halfway through the episode now and steve and danny have spent SO MUCH time together and it’s really good but also has me slightly worried that they’re pushing all the steve&danny content for the entire season in one episode, omg. it’s good, though. i’m happy for now.

adam is still doing yakuza stuff. i get it, because it’s the one big thing they’ve given his character, but i do get kind of tired of it. he’s supposedly out, but every time they need it for plot reasons, he still has connections somewhere that are willing to help him for whatever reason.

and then quinn shows up and pulls a gun on adam, fjdkfd. listen, i know i said i was getting tired of him doing the yakuza thing over and over, but shooting him would be a little drastic.

danny: “this is good, we’re chasing a monster truck. that’s totally normal, right?” how is it that NOW they’re both suddenly realizing their lives are kind of crazy? they weren’t crazy before, guys? guys??

HAH, the guy in the truck drives over a dozen cars. that’s ridiculous, but a lot of fun, omg.

danny, when he finds tani and quinn in the same room at hq: “oh good, you two have met.” YES. MY SENTIMENTS. except i’m perhaps a little more exuberant about it. TWO MAIN FEMALE CHARACTERS IN ONE SCENE YES GOOD I LIKE THIS. we haven’t had this since... season 4, maybe? when catherine was briefly part of the team?

oh SHIT. danny: “are you sure you’re not related to steve in any way?” okay SO. we’re all assuming quinn is steve’s new love interest, but quinn being steve’s secret half sister somehow? also nonsense, but nonsense i’d like. and i mean, they need to keep the mcgarrett family drama alive somehow, so this could be fun.

quinn: “can’t this thing go any faster? [steve looks at her weird] what?” steve: “nothing. just never had that complaint before.” that is a LIE. i know for a fact that that’s a lie, because i have a stupid amount of knowledge of h50 of the top of my head and one of the things i know is that in 8.01 tani pops up between steve and danny while she’s in the backseat of the camaro and ALSO asks if it doesn’t go any faster. i know what they’re going for here, setting quinn and steve up as equals, and i like what they’re trying to tell us about quinn as a character in theory but come on, if you’re trying to convince us steve is all impressed by this woman that you might be setting him up with romantically, at least do some continuity fact checking on your own show, guys.

anyway! i do like that it’s canon that all women in five-0 think the camaro isn’t fast enough. get wrecked, steve and danny, HA.

when steve said to the bad guy “my friend lou here is going to put some handcuffs on you” i thought at first that he said “liu”, as in quinn’s last name, and oh man, first they had tani and junior’s last names as rey and reigns, which was close enough, but now they have lou and liu, gosh.

!!! this talk between steve and quinn in front of kamekona’s?? i LIKE IT. A LOT. we get to know a little more about quinn and steve genuinely does treat her as an equal and a capable colleague and there’s nothing especially romantic about this, which is good this early on even if they’re doing that later because i do feel like it could possibly work but right now it would just be really weird and very forced and i’m just really relieved that’s the dynamic they’re going for. this, this is good.

OH BOY. “we’re breaking up with you, danny” steve says. i... wow.

FAIR THOUGH. it’s probably a REALLY GOOD idea of steve to maybe involve danny a little less in his dating life if he wants to, well, actually have one that’s viable for life, but oh GOSH. danny going “you can’t cut me out” when steve tells him this? danny is just. so interested in steve’s romantic life, damn.

tani: “mom and dad are fighting again.” fdjkfdjk YES. this time it’s not even junior saying this to eddie behind steve and danny’s back, it’s just tani saying it out loud to the entire group and nobody says anything about it so uhhh that’s accepted fact then, within the team. GOOD.

ohhhh jerry is leaving. also not a real surprise and it’s probably kind of good that the team doesn’t endlessly keep growing if quinn joins this season, but ahh, i’m sad, anyway.

GROUP HUG. i love EVERY SINGLE THING ABOUT THIS.

oh gooood, somebody put a bomb in the champ box in steve’s garage. that’s harsh.

final thoughts: i LIKED THIS. very much!!! i’m relieved about that, tbh, because at least i’m happy about the start of the season, which seems like a good sign, haha. i love quinn so far, there was REALLY GREAT mcdanno stuff in this, i love that steve is dating again, tani and junior seem to be dating, jerry is fairly healthy and happy - all around lots of good stuff.

i do kind of think that cliffhanger from last season got extremely little attention (we didn’t even see ezra hassan get arrested, and what happened to her kid? where was danny? idk it was weirdly short and quick), but it’s still possible they’re coming back to that in a later episode, idk.

Another week is ending, another replies post is here. Why is it that when there’s a million deadlines waiting for me, time just gets faster? I miss the old days when I had nothing to do. Kinda.

Remember when I rambled a lot in these posts before getting to the actual replies? I have nothing to say this time, other than Roses are coming back (which you’ve probably already noticed). I’m kinda sad to see gen 2 of NSB is truly coming to an end now (in my game, it’s been over for a few months). It was definitely an era and I want to thank everyone who’s been here for this crazy ride. It seems to me like you all enjoyed it way more than I expected. I hope you’ll stay and well, we’ll see them again in a few months. This time, Sunset will be in the spotlight.

I’m talking as if there weren’t a few more days of NSB left in the queue. It’s the FiNaL cOuNtDoWn...idk why I just thought of that song but I’m gonna go listen to it now. If I’m not mistaken, Friday is the last NSB day. Enjoy it.

I’ve only ever watched the first movie. I don’t remember it too much though. But I remember having like two Twilight posters from teen magazines on my wardrobe when I was about 11 because I wanted to be cool, even though I didn’t really know what it was. I just knew everyone was talking about it.

I also had this idea that “cool kids have posters everywhere” so...yeah. I was a weird kid at that time.

I’ll never forget when I asked who you guys ship Ross with and everyone who replied just said Caleb. There were a few other guesses, but everyone mentioned they were rooting for Caleb. The audience’s love for these two is one of my favourite things about this generation.

I've been looking for more podcasts to listen to, what do you recommend other than TAZ? I've also tried Nightvale and it's GOOD but... it's been going for a long time and it's intimidating to even start it now.

Ahhh I tried Nightvale, kinda! I got about halfway through the first episode ahaha. Love the concept. I’ll have to come back to it.

Uhm... hmm... well... I’ve mostly been listening to horror/lore podcasts? So if you’re not into that kinda thing you might not like my recs. Sorry :’D If you are into that stuff though, hopefully you’ll like some of these!

TANIS and The Black Tapes are really good story-driven ones, and stupidly immersive. I actually had to do research to make sure they were a fake radio station (I mean they’re speaking about the supernatural, so I knew they were. But these guys are seriously good at suspending disbelief. They even handle all their twitter announcements and things in character, which shook me up because of some things that happened in Black Tapes).

The Black Tapes is currently on hiatus until August when it will unveil it’s newest and I think final season {season 3). It’s a supernatural horror about a demon gate and the end of the world. I ended up having to take a break from it halfway through the second season because it was giving me anxiety. They do a lot of stuff with music/sound/the unseen, and that stuff freaks me out unreasonably.

TANIS is by the same people, and it’s a more Lovecraftian type horror story. Lots of allusions to other dimensions, the frailty of humanity, doppelgangers and false reality stuff. Also Eld Fen, which I desperately want to learn more about, which is like an infinite god of both terror and knowledge specifically made for the TANIS universe. TANIS is a good one to listen to if you want to wonder if there’s still adventure and mystery in this world. There’s some pretty good original writing in it as well - literally everything from the character scripts to fake historical documents and things of the like. These guys are nuts.

Lore is an informative podcast about lore from different cultures - though mostly to do with witch hunt stories from early US history. It gets kinda repetitive if you binge listen, since I want to say a good third of his content is about witch hunts and misunderstandings, and tends to end on a moral of ‘human fear makes us do stupid shit’. But it’s also got really cool info and research. Also good creepy vibes if you like dramatic readings of history.

Cthulhu and Friends is another one I really enjoyed but I ended up taking a break from. It’s long. I don’t think I made it through the first season? Or possibly just started the second. It’s a bunch of friends playing the game “Call of Cthulhu”. Starts out pretty slow and kind of hard to follow, but rapidly improves in terms of character, story and sound quality. Also there is major character death, which is something The Adventure Zone lacks as far as the main characters go, and kinda puts you on edge since so much shit goes down in the series. Also they wrap up every episode with outtakes, which can be pretty funny!

The NoSleep Podcast is also pretty decent. Each episode has anywhere between 3-5 short, scary stories. A decent number at the beginning I’d heard before because of youtube channels I’d listened to that read similar things. They follow a specific reddit thread where people post their original scary stories. Themes range from demon/ghost stuff to realistic horror to scifi-horror. It’s got a lot of everything. The host is also decent at warning for excessively graphic content - more graphic than is normal for horror anyway. And a lot of the themes you can infer from the titles of the works. Oh yeah! And apparently they host monthly writing contests, and pick the winners they’ll read? I thought that was a neat community touch.

Last one I’ll recommend you is Spirits (and is actually what I’m listening to now).Two girls; one has a history/religions/lore degree from somewhere, the other knows nothing about lore but is great with literature and analysis. Together they educate the world on really cool mythical creatures/beings from different religions and cultures. Oh did I mention they get drunk? Yeah they say their commentary drunk - and always with thematic drinks pulled from those cultures or mixed specifically for their lore. The one I remember most is a rum and something mix because they were talking about Haitian Voodoo goddesses, for whom you’re supposed to give a gift of liquor. Only downside is the girls are prone to getting off topic or rambling sometimes - as drunk people will do. Never in excess though - they always stay lucid and funny and casual. I actually didn’t realize they were doing these drunk until 3 or 4 episodes in.

And that’s all I got I think? I’ve got a couple others I’ve listened to minimally but don’t know enough about or don’t like enough to rightly recommend them. I’m also trying to branch out into other DnD podcasts, which I think will be fun eventually ~ I just often get intimidated by how far along some of them are.

I am seeking both to give podcast recommendations and to receive recommendations because...yeah. So, if you’re in the market for some good ear reads, here’s a list:

For the True Crime junkie:

Sword & Scale: Some people have had issues with the way Mike does this podcast, but it’s personally one of my favorites. Be warned it tends to favor the detailed approach - no evidence sparing in the sense that there are often (meaning that if they can get a hold of them they are there) the actual 911 calls, interrogation audio, and other materials that can be unnerving/hard to hear. In my opinion, Mike and his team do a great job of putting you in the investigation without it feeling like another CSI TV show or true crime podcast. Good story-telling, good topics, and he will also bring experts on as well to talk about behaviors/etc. If you are interested in true crime, definitely give this one a try. Just...be careful where you listen. People have caught me with really weird expressions on my face while listening to this podcast.

Haunted/Myth/Story telling (ie, not just scary stories):

Pleasing Terrors: This one I’m not sure completely fits into this category, but I’m gonna stick it in here anyways because there are only a few aspects that make me consider it true crime. Mike (different Mike) is a haunted tour guide in Charleston (and I’m attempting to take his tour in a few weeks - exciting) and has taken his experience in story telling to a podcast that combines true crime with fictional/urban legend/haunted stories. Not everything he talks about can be 100% fact checked (and he doesn’t present it otherwise), but has enough evidence surrounding an event or legend. I enjoy his type of story telling, though it is not the detailed style of Sword and Scale. It listens much more as a campfire ghost story.

Lore: Recently this podcast has gotten huge. There’s a TV show now on Amazon Prime, and a book series based on the podcast (as well as a few other podcasts that Aaron has branched off into). Like Pleasing Terrors, Aaron combines fact, or history, with legend. While this podcast also listens like a campfire story telling, I wouldn’t compare it to Pleasing Terrors. There is some overlap, but I think they have different methods. Aaron puts a lot more history in his podcast, for instance (don’t let that deter you though). He’s also a very motivating person on twitter.

Fairy Tales For Unwanted Children: Like it sounds, these are short stories, or tales, typically written and read by Scott Thrower. I really enjoy them; they’re all very creative and original (and not spooky or scary like the previous two podcasts). Even though the episodes are not very long (10-30 minutes), I get wrapped up into the story super fast - which has proven to be a problem when I listen at the gym.

The Twenty Percent True Podcast: Similar to FTFUC, these are short stories, written and read by Carolyn. Unlike the previous podcast though - which sticks to its fairy tale style writing - Carolyn has more modern short stories that are equally as original and creative.

Fictional Docudramas (I don’t really know how else to categorize these):

The Black Tapes Podcast: This podcast is fictional, but is set up to feel and sound like a documented story. It’s all (or mostly all) recorded on the go like a journalist would do, and it pieced together like you would as a journalist documenting an on going investigation or story. Which means you hear other people, other noises - you hear the main character running or struggling - and you hear other people being uncomfortable that there’s suddenly a person with a recorder at their door. It’s all very realistic and well made. The story itself tends to lean more towards spooky or scary - though I wouldn’t say it’s a scary podcast. It does have a paranormal plot though as it is a paranormal investigation story.

Tanis: This podcast is done by the same people as the previous podcast (Pacific Northwest Stories is who does them I believe) and it’s done in the same way, with even an overlap of characters and timelines from the Black Tapes. Instead of paranormal, this podcast is a mystery. Though I would say there are paranormal events - jut nothing like ghosts or spirits or anything. I would give a disclaimer that it took me a few episodes to really get into this one (I only tried it because I had loved Black Tapes), but once things start happening, it’s like a deep dive into a whole new world. So maybe give it 3 episodes or so before you judge it. As a side note, the two main characters in this podcast also star in The Last Movie, but as it only has a few episodes out, I haven’t developed an opinion on it - nor would I have much to write about in terms of plot yet.

Rabbits: Again, a Pacific Northwest Stories podcast. Same method and an overlap of characters as well (though not as strong). This podcast is about a video game - an underground video game that has ties to everything anywhere and is making people go missing. The story follows a girl trying to find her friend who went missing as she uncovers this game and who deep it really goes. This one also took a few episodes to get going (I actually can’t fault them for that in either case though because it makes the whole thing feel more realistic), but again, is a deep dive once you’re in.

Welcome to Night Vale: I’m not going to be super detailed here because I feel like the majority of Tumblr is aware of this podcast in particular. Simply put, it’s a daily radio program in the town of Night Vale - which exists in its own plane of science, existence, norms, what’s possible, etc. Basically it’s hilarious because nothing is as you would expect it to be - and even once you expect the unexpected, you’re still wrong. While it’s light-hearted and entertaining, there’s also a story progressing as well which I think gives it life in kind of an undertone way as you experience it through the radio host’s (Cecil - who you will love almost immediately) telling of the news.

Misc (aka they all belong in different categories but I don’t wanna do that):

Sawbones: This is a podcast I found for my husband actually (because he didn’t think that the world of podcasts had anything to offer him. The world of podcasts has something to offer everyone) because of his interest in the medical field. However, I have come to love it too. So even if you have no interest in medical history, don’t stop reading just yet (because I also have zero interest in medical history yet here I am). This podcast is done but a husband and wife (wife - doctor, husband - hilarity). They talk about misguided medical treatments and beliefs throughout history and it is hilarious. It’s light-hearted and typically family friendly - and you learn and laugh a lot.

The Adventure Zone: The husband of Sawbones does this podcast with his brothers and father. It is a hysterical D&D podcast - meaning that they play through a D&D adventure that one of the brothers wrote (don’t give up on this podcast yet). Most of them have never played before so there’s lots of hilarity just with them figuring it all out. The plot is also amazing - and it’s not just a 10 episode, one arc kinda thing. This is a long series. However, even if you’re unfamiliar or have no interest in D&D, this will be simple to follow as well as hilarious. As a side note though, it’s not the family friendly podcast that Sawbones is.

Astonishing Legends: Okay so this podcast does a deep (deep) dive into....everything. They’ve covered aliens, ghosts, conspiracies, Big Foot, shadow people, Amelia Earhart, and so much more. So much more. They do a ton of research an everything as well, and present as much of it to you (which means each episode topic - ie, Amelia Earhart - will cover 2-5 one to three hours episodes. Read that again. It’s a lot of research.). They tend to try to come to their own conclusions about each topic (thus the research) and rule out explanations that are improbable because of such and such reasoning. To be honest, I pick and choose episodes because not every topic interests me. But they have such a wide range of topics that there’s bound to be at least one 4-episode long topic that interests you. My personal favorites have been the Dyatlov Pass, the Laughing Indian, the Shadow People, the Sludge Entity, Skinwalker Ranch, and the Sally House - with others I’m sure that I’m not remembering. Even though each episode is long, typically I have enjoyed the ones I’ve listened to. The two hosts are funny enough to be entertaining during a two hour episode - and the show is light-hearted enough to not be unsettling if you’re going through one of their paranormal episodes.
