Ed Speleers’ characterisation masterclass: psychopaths
“Fundamentally, I have to look at strengths and weaknesses of both the character and myself. I need to find a way in. So, if it’s playing someone who is dark and is removed from me, I need to find that. I also need to have empathy with that character. […] Using the character as a real, living, breathing human. Now, there are certain things that I can’t associate myself with that character but I need to find a way in, so, strengths and weaknesses being one. Where are we similar, where are we different; what’s that character’s point of view of the world, what’s my point of view of the world? And how can I put my own truth into that? Using a psychopath as an example… No one plays psychopath. There’s learned behaviour there. And I think you have to find ways of how does that character use his certain behaviours to get what he wants out of certain scenes. Whether it be he charms, whether he uses aggression, whether he uses empathy himself, whether he uses sorrow, whether he uses manipulation, intimidation. And how would I, Ed, maybe find ways to associate myself in those situations?” — Ed Speleers on how he gets into character for EQ Connects
