Father Marcus walked me to a seat near the back of the audience, one he’d apparently reserved for me, before he left to go “do business” (I knew he wasn’t. I’d heard a bottle rattling around in the bus). I was glad I was sitting out, I already needed a break from all the noise, but I wished we could just get on with the trip. I hadn’t ever been to a fair before. Honestly, for a good part of my life, I didn’t even know what a roller coaster was. Of course it had been Ezra who learned about them first- he had a phase where he spent hours at a time researching the most dangerous ones in the world. Once I woke up in the middle of the night to find him hunched over with a flashlight, mapping out a sketch of the most fatal ride his twelve-year-old brain could come up with. He called it “the One”. Sometimes I’m worried about him. 

Anyways.
