A night in with Cor.
*at work when Moosh sense tingles.* Hm.... *checks her blog and sees that the moosh needs hugs and love* oh nos..... no.... Sads no touch our moosh.  *sads have touched the moosh. cue cracking knuckles and clicking a pen* Oh we are so fixing this.
So.... I saw that @themissimmortal has been having it rough and needed hugs and love and just soft cor fluff. Seeing how I love the Moosh to death and her and my sister wallflower got me back into writing on here.... This is the least I can do. So Moosh... If this makes you smile... Then My job is done. :)  So get ready for some pure unadulterated Cor Fluff!
Necromancers had nothing on your workplace. Sure, those demons could turn you to stone and kill you, but work sucked out your soul. There was no energy left for writing or even  video games afterwards. Just cuddles with Cor and dinner before you passed out to do it again the next day.
Finally, After all the overtime and the bullshit, you had a few days off coming. A whole weekend you could just do whatever and be with Cor. That was the part you loved the most. After one last grueling twelve hour day, you opened the door to your shared apartment and sighed. It was past sunset now so Cor would be home. You dropped your bag by the door and kicked off the shoes off your aching feet. Your blood sugar was getting low as well so dinner would have to be something quick. You slowly walked into the kitchen to an amazing surprise.
Low jazz was on in the background as a shapely body danced to the beat in front of the stove. Bare feet leading to grey sweats and a tight muscle tee, was your lover and support, Cor. He looked back hearing you and smiled gently.
“Welcome home love. Have a good day?” You smiled gently then.
“As good as I could make it…. You?”
“Easy. Trained some new kids. They’re picking up on everything quickly.” You nodded as you went closer. He was roasting Veggies in a light sauce and they smelt amazing.
“Baked chicken breast ok?”
“Perfect.” You stole a bite then of the veggies and smiled. The flavors were out of this world. Not many knew but Cor was an amazing cook when you let him in the kitchen.
“Gods Cor…. you make these better every time.”
“Well someone’s got to make sure you keep eating.” He gently nudged you then.
“Ah. Can’t feel a rib now.” You laughed then. He always said you were too small at times just to make you laugh. He put an arm around you then and gave your head a gentle kiss.
“Go on and sit down in the living room. I’ve got this… you need to relax.” You looked up into those eyes and almost melted. So much love and care was there, you couldn’t argue. You gave him a little kiss before obeying.
You sat on the comfy couch and slowly felt yourself unwinding and letting your shoulders and neck relax. The pain would hit later but for now, you were ok. A mindless sitcom was on the Tv as background noise in this room. You weren’t paying any attention to the tv as you slowly spaced out. It seemed like less than a minute to you before you felt Cor’s strong hand against your neck slowly rubbing out a knot that had formed. You groaned slightly enjoying the sensation. His hands were always rough but they never hurt you. Only helped to bring pleasure in all the right ways.
“You awake still?”
“Yep…. though you keep this up and I won’t be.” He laughed then giving you a kiss on the cheek.
“What to drink hon?”
“Hm…. tea?”
“Green ok?” You nodded slightly then. Your neck didn’t hurt when you did it. He had fixed that. You heard him leave and slowly sat up stretching. A new show was coming on already. You stopped then and looked back.
“Cor… how long?”
“Only Fifteen hon. You spaced out. Had a feeling you were relaxing.”
“Yeah A bit…” You raised your arms above your head then and heard both shoulders pop. You cringed from a bit of pain and the sound but slowly lowered them. Cor had plates and silverware in his hands and set them on the coffee table. The chicken looked moist and so full of flavor just like the roasted veggies. He came back with the tea for you both and soon sat next to you. You smiled and leaned over giving him a kiss.
“Thank you.”
“Anytime hon. There’s enough for seconds if you want as well so eat up. Ok?” You nodded and got your plate and just relaxed. He listened to you talk about your day as you two ate even though it was really hard to feel angry even at the most stupid things because of the amazing food. He picked up on it as well and ended up chuckling as you speared a green bean after talking about a stupid move your boss made that messed your work up. You gave him a fake glare as you took a bite and pointed the fork at him.
“If this wasn’t so good, I’d be really annoyed Cor.”
“I can tell. What did those poor veggies ever do to you?” You laughed then and stabbed another.
“They’re addictive when you cook with them. That’s their crime.”
“It’s a good crime hon.”
“Is that a thing?”
You two finished out with laughter after that discussing good and bad crimes, like it was a legit thing for vegetables to commit such things. You finished yours first slowly setting the plate down feeling ready for bed already. You were almost dozing when he touched your face. You opened your eyes and he was smiling.
“Food coma?” You nodded and he smiled.
“How about a bath first hon? To work the soreness out of those muscles.” You smiled then.
“Cor I haven’t had a real bath in forever…”
“Then let me help with that. Ok?” You sighed gently then. You couldn’t say no. Your feet were killing you.
“Ok. Just this once alright?” He gave a single nod then and smiled.
“Understood. I’ll get it started. You go pick out pjs.” You smiled then.
“Some you can rip or some to honestly wear.”
“Some to wear hon… I’m saving the ripping for later.” He winked then making you blush slightly. No one could tell you Cor wasn’t a closet Pervert considering how many pairs of panties he had ruined in foreplay. You slowly got up as you heard him running the water in your huge tub. You had a master bathroom complete with a jacuzzi. The shower stood alone which is what you normally used. Cor had Dished out extra on the down payment of the apartment for that bathroom alone. After a rough workout, He did like to soak.
You got your favorite bottoms out of your drawers then along with underwear. Then you decided to have some fun. When Cor moved in, he set aside some of his street clothes in your side of the shared closet. He wanted them near your stuff so you knew you could wear them. Which is what you were doing today. You pulled out a dark grey shirt with a dragon on the front and smiled. It ate you to wear it but you loved how soft it was. He walked in as you rubbed it on your face and he smiled.
“Good choice hon.”
“Cus it’s yours?”
“Nah. You look super cute in it is all. Bath’s all ready if you are.” You looked over. He was smiling and had a small lighter in his hand. Cor was up to something.
“What did you do?”
“You’ll see.” You walked out then and turned down the hall. The lights were on low in the bathroom and The scent of Sandalwood drifted out. You walked closer, slowly inhaling it and feeling your mind slow down. It was your favorite scent and he knew it. Only under it, there was a sweeter note. It didn’t hit you what it was till you got closer to the tub. It was filled with Bubbles as the water slowly moved from the jets. Vanilla bubble bath.
“Cor….” You looked back. He was in the door smiling.
“I Thought it might help. Ignis told me about it. Something called Aromatherapy. Helps to relax and destress people and I knew sandalwood was your favorite… So we found something to accent it.” You were melting inside. He really put effort into this.
“Thank you….” He just smiled.
“I’m not done yet.” You laughed a bit then.
“Might be if I can’t stay awake.” He just shrugged a bit and You shook your head. He was such a good man to you. He closed the door slowly as you ducked out of sight to undress. Your muscles were starting to ache from the day so when you slipped into the hot water, your gasp from the heat turned into a moan of relief. You sank into the bubbles and water and leaned back on the wall nearest the door, letting your head lull back against a towel. Between the jets and the heat, you were in bliss. With your eyes open you could see the incense stick burning on it’s tray close by and a few candles lit close by as well. You couldn’t believe how lucky you were to have a man like him by your side.
Fifteen minutes in and you were almost asleep. Nothing hurt and after that amazing meal, you were perfectly content. You barely heard the door reopen or Cor walk over. You jumped when he touched you though.
“Easy…”
“Sorry…”
“No it’s ok… Feeling ok?”
“I’m amazing Hon… You didn’t have to.”
“I know… But you’re always working so hard babe. It’s the least I can do to help Especially after the week you’ve had.” You chuckled then. It had been a shit week. You hadn’t even had time to wash your hair. A fact you could now feel. You sat up a bit then and felt pouting. At least till you felt Cor pulling you back.
“Huh?”
“No point in getting out of heaven if I’m here.” You stopped then.
“Cor…”
“Don’t say it. I know I don’t have to but I want to. You need this… So relax and enjoy.”
“Oh? Is that an order?”
“Might as well. A relaxation order. I can even get Clarus to write it out if you want.” You chuckled then.
“Nah… I’ll let my Marshall spoil me tonight…” You trusted him. Plus… What was the harm in this?
You found out. There was no harm. Cor was perfectly gentle. He used the faucet in the tub to fill a cup to wet your hair and slowly massaged in the shampoo. Your eyes almost could see the back of your skull from how good it felt. He did this anyway when you had trouble sleeping but tonight, it felt even better. He was humming gently as he did this even as he was rinsing out the soap and his hands went lower to your shoulders and neck. Hearing that deep voice hum lightly was perfection and as you leaned your head against one of his arms, you kissed his wrist.
“I like this…”
“Which part?”
“You… Humming. Hands on me.”
“Oh? I’ll have to remember that…. It’s done a wonder on you so far… No knots in your shoulders anymore.” You smiled then. You could feel that it was true.
“All thanks to you.” He chuckled then.
“Too soon for that hon.” You leaned up a bit then and looked back. He was smiling.
“What do you mean?”
“After bath.” You groaned then. He was always like that when he wanted to spoil you.
Slowly the water went cold as the bubbles faded. You two just stayed in there talking about things and life enjoying being near each other. He helped you out of the tub and into a warm towel before hugging you tightly. You hugged back smiling. He was so warm and soft right now for you. It made your eyes tear up from how much you loved him.
“Hey….”
“Hm?”
“You ok…?”
“Perfect Cor….”
“Then why the tears babe?” You smiled then.
“I love you so much…. You’re so good to me Cor….”
“You say that like you aren’t to me… you’ve stayed by me so long hon… I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“Exist and be a badass.” He laughed picking you up then making you squeak and hold the towel close.
“No…. I’m no badass without my woman to protect and spoil.”
“Cor!!!” He was honestly smiling, eyes crinkling and shining perfectly. He kissed you and you slowly kissed back forgetting that you were naked under the towel for a moment. He took you back to the bedroom then as you leaned on him smiling. He carefully put you down on the bed where he had moved your clothes. You hit him gently with your bra and he smiled.
“So Full massage or just a foot rub?” You stopped then.
“You’re serious?”
“Yeah.” You sighed a bit then.
“Um… Everything feels ok right now… but a foot rub couldn’t hurt.”
“Still wearing that old pair of shoes huh?”
“Haven't had time to buy new ones…” you muttered. He sighed then and smiled.
“We’ve got time tomorrow… Ok?” You nodded then and got your tops on as he slowly got started massaging your ankles and working his way down. A once stiff foot slowly became movable and painless. You hummed in appreciation as he hit all the right spots leaning back on your elbows. Cor was smiling and soon wiggled just the pinky toe slightly.
“This little piggy went to the field.” You giggled then and he smiled.
“This little one went to hunt demons.” He got the next one then and gave it a wiggle. He went through all five just making you laugh at the childish antic. He switched feet then and you smiled.
“How do you know?”
“What?”
“Where to hit?”
“Oh. When I was doing my hand to hand training. We learned all the pressure points on the body. The feet ones cause a full body reaction that help relax a person. Especially when you’re up on your feet so much.” You nodded then.
“Amazing what all you can remember…”
“Oh yeah… Still can’t remember your favorite Movie though sadly.” You couldn’t stop it then. You started laughing as he smiled. You looked down at him and beamed.
“It changes silly….”
“Oh? Damn… I’ll figure it out one day though.”
“I know you will…” He hit a spot then and you jerked. It tickled. He stopped then and smiled as you went red.
“I think you’re good.” You nodded and slowly flexed the toes. It was so much better now.
“Oh gods… hon I might have you do that every night….”
“Hm… How about once a week?”
“That could work.” You got up then and finished getting your pjs on. He didn’t mind and soon had the bed ready to crash. You got onto your side and under the covers then. You were almost energized and yet you were ready for bed. He got the light off then and soon went to his side and joined you. Instantly, you curled up by his side and his arm went around you.
“Feeling better huh?”
“Much…. Thanks Cor…”
“It’s worth it to see you like this… I’ve been worried about you… So I thought this would help. Just a relaxing night with me.” You nodded laying your head on his shoulder. Already you could feel your eyes wanting to shut.
“It did… Love you.”
“Love you too hon… Sleep well ok?” He had noticed. You smiled then and nuzzled in against him closing your eyes. The last thing you heard though, was him humming an old song to you. You really were a lucky gal to have the marshall at your side.

Hello could you please write a minhyun fanfic about him and Y/N being on we got married (and later on starts dating irl?) thank you (ps, i love your minhyun scenarios so much)
omg WGM :o hahaha ngl i was never a big fan of WGM even though two members of one of my favourite groups have been on it, but i tried my best! i’ll write anything fluffy for minhyun lmao Sorry about the wait!
A continuation of this will be up next which is from another anon’s request!!
Hwang Minhyun WGM!AU
Tumblr media
ok so lets give you a bit of background to set the scene
you’re an idol, but originally you were going to be an actress except you really liked dancing and singing so your company was like ‘why not both?’ (think female version of Ong)
You became a fixed MC on a music show last year so you’ve been able to meet a lot of people
Popularity-wise, you’re pretty well liked, you’ve never had any scandals or issues
Plus because you’re bi/multilingual so you’ve been able to further expand Hallyu internationally, and yknow everyone loves a bit of patriotism
So this is why you were extremely uncertain about being on WGM
It’s a show that puts you in the spotlight
and kinda tries to brand you with this false image, and if you don’t fit that image the public tend to be like wtf is wrong with you
WGM could be a make or break for the virtual couples who participated on the show
You had heard from other celebrities who had been on WGM about how strange it was, like just the whole concept of a “virtual” relationship wasn’t something you’d ever been too keen on
So you were skeptical and it didnt help that your company hadn’t given you much warning about being on it
They just said to be prepared for the invitation over the next week or so
So when the red mailbox appeared outside your dorm along with a bunch of MBC camera staff you realised they hadn’t been kidding
You had read the letter outloud for the cameras;
“To my soon-to-be virtual wife, our first meeting place will be at the xxxxxx Building tomorrow. Before we meet, I’ll give you a big clue as to who I am, I wonder if you’ll be able to guess! I’m in an idol group, and I’ve debuted twice…I look forward to meeting you~
You read the letter again, absorbing all the information….
“EH? Tomorrow??”
no wonder your manager had been awfully quiet when you had asked her about your schedule
Oh well, guess you gotta prepare for this virtual blind date
Tbh…now that you had accepted the fact that you had to go on this show, you were kinda excited
It’s literally so rare for you to ever get the chance to go on a proper date, even if this counted as a fake/virtual one
——next day—–
You hadn’t slept well the night before, in both fear and anticipation
Hopefully the person you were going to ‘marry’ would be nice
Because your partner was fully in charge of organising this first date, you had decided to prepare a gift for him
Which you found to be super difficult, seeing as you weren’t sure who they were but tbh you had narrowed it down to a couple of possibilities
Like in the pre-meet interview that morning they had asked you if you had any idea who the person could be and you had listed a few names of idols you knew had debuted twice, like mino, or sungwoon or minhyunnnn
but seeing as you knew he’s an idol you decided on little things you knew you found helpful being an idol yourself
You packed a neck pillow, a heat pack, and this really big woollen scarf you had knitted yourself (imagine it’s winter time pls)
Your manager drops you off outside the building and you hop out of the car in this big fluffy sweater and black jeans, completed bundled up and warm
The staff ushered you over to the elevator and you’re left awkwardly and nervously rambling to yourself as they press the buttons to every 2nd floor
The doors open to the second floor and a hotel staff pops their head in and gives you a bouquet of flowers with a note
“You’re here! Today’s the day we finally meet~”
You smiled to yourself, seems like this guy is a bit of a hopeless romantic
The doors to the fourth floor open and sitting on the ground is a little fox plushie doll
You pick it up and attached is another note that says,
“I’ve heard that I resemble a desert fox~”
You froze, no freaking way could it be….
On the sixth floor it was a jar of honey - “My voice is sweet like honey wahhh this is embarrassing >
Your eyes widened. There was no denying who it was now.
WGM had never done something like this before, usually people who went on the show had never previously met or had many interactions, but in your case it would be different
You had met Minhyun before, multiple times in fact
You had been good friends with Aron from NU’EST as well as other English speaking idols and had naturally gotten to know the other boys from NU’EST as well
And although you wouldn’t consider yourself best friends with Minhyun or anything, you had always been able to joke round with him
plus he’s a super cute and super nice guy that was always easy to talk to
Now that you think about it, it’s kinda even more terrifying now that you know who’s waiting for you and the fact you already know him as well??? and he doesnt have a clue who you are???? what if he’s disappointed??? like how awkward would that be, you’d actually die from embarrassment
Finally the doors to the 10th floor open and lo and behold Minhyun is standing there, with his back facing you
When he heard the door open he had immediately tensed up
He was nervous as hell too, poor thing
Like kinda kicking himself for being so cheesy with the whole elevator thing, but y’know, gotta make a strong first impression
He can hear your footsteps approach him and he fights the urge to turn round
The staff signal to you to say something and you become a big stuttering mess, like what are you meant to say???
“uHHhhHH Minhyun, IT’S ME, Y/N”
And he whizzes round so fking fast with his eyes popping out of his head literally everyone is laughing so hard
And he’s bright red because in the pre-interview they had asked him who he’d choose if any idol was able to go on wgm as his partner, and he had said Y/N, and he just assumed that you wouldn’t be on this show and didnt have his hopes up
so the fact you’re actually standing in front of him about to become his virtual wife is so strange but surreal to both of you
so of course, the two of you hit it off right away, seeing as you already know each other
After migrating to a cafe, you thanked him for the gifts and the elevator surprises and gave him the present you prepared
and he loves it so much, and he puts on the scarf you made straight away and is super proud of it
and you kinda just catch up on life with him, and find out how he’s doing in Wanna One
and that night after the filming was over, he sent you a text telling you how he was happy that you were his partner
and you spent the whole night just messaging cute little shy texts back and forth
After a few more days of filming, the first episode was finally broadcasted
And you were anxiously sitting by the tv with your group members trying to gage their reactions
it was embarrassing to see yourself become such a blushing mess in front of Minhyun
It was embarrassing for your friends too though, because no one is used to seeing you all shy like this
Funnily enough, Minhyun was the same in his dorm, and all the W1 boys were teasing him relentlessly
like collectively cringing at the notes he had left for you, and commenting on everything he did
And after the episode finishes, you’re a bit anxious of what the viewers think of it all
but luckily it turns out lots of people tuned in and love it
It seems to be a realistic fantasy(?) of people’s to go from friends to lovers
so with each following episode, the public laps up all the cuteness the two of you just naturally exude
Like they love how both of you were supposedly motae solo (single since birth), and that for both of you this would be the first ‘proper’ relationship
And minhyun has always had Boyfriend goals vibe attached to him
and you were top notch wife material too
You guys become known as the “Royal” couple
every one is like “충성충성” (choongseongchoongseong) I pledge my loyalty to you
So the first time you guys had proper skinship was super natural but cheesy as well
It was a filming by the Han River and you hadn’t worn gloves and it was getting pretty chilly
You had been rubbing your hands together to warm them up and it hadn’t been particularly obvious but Minhyun just reaches over and gently clasps your hand in his and puts it in his pocket
literally at that part though, everyone watching it had squealed
even you had been like omg bf goals
And bit later on when you had moved into the honeymoon house, the two of you would often rest your heads on the other’s shoulder and read books together
One of the most heart pounding days had been the wedding day, because although you knew it wasn’t a legit thing, something about Minhyun wearing a tuxedo and standing there waiting for you to walk towards him had made you feel things
And clearly you had the same effect on him, because he was absolutely speechless when he saw you
That night before heading back to the dorm, it seemed that the something had changed between the two of you
The hug Minhyun had given you had been longer, and gentler, if that was even possible
and he’d brushed the hair away from your face and whispered a string of sweet nothings into your ear before giving you a cute little wave and scampering over to get into his manager’s van
and you weren’t too sure what to think of it, because it’s not like the two of you are properly dating or anything
although it definitely feels like it
You go on lots more dates every week and each one was full of memories
Like you’d gone to movies, but you’d actually fallen asleep and Minhyun had just giggled
“Minhyun, you should’ve woken me up!”
“But you looked cute! i think you drooled tho”
And you’d gone tandem biking, and wandered round different museums, and you went to karaoke together, and Minhyun ended up serenading you with cute af songs
and there was a day that the two of you went shopping to look for gifts for each other, and you ended up getting matching phone charms
There was also the time where there was a special guest episode, where both of you had invited friends round and cooked dinner for them
And everything goes smoothly for the following couple of months, with your relationship only getting closer each day
Until one day a letter arrives, and it’s different from the others so both of you immediately know what it is
A week before the final episode, you started to distance yourself from Minhyun
mainly because both of you have been so shy about your true feelings, despite talking lots and becoming closer, you still have no clue if minhyun actually considers you to be more than a friend
and because you knew it was coming to an end, you’d have to say goodbye anyways so you were trying to let go without having to have your feelings hurt more than they would be
it didn’t feel right though, and Minhyun could tell something was wrong
so he had come up to you and put a hand on your arm just before the crew started filming the final episode to talk to you
“Y/N…are we…okay?”
You glanced up at him and you could see his eyes trying to decipher the expression on your face and as much as it pained for you to say it, you decided it would be the best to break ties now
“Yeah, why wouldn’t we be, we’re friends aren’t we?”
And after you had said that, Minhyun’s face had fallen
Like he was upset that you appeared so nonchalant that the ‘marriage’ would be over and you’d revert back to being just friends
He dropped his hand that was on your arm and nodded, his face hardening and he turned to walk away
A few steps though, and he stopped turning back, eyes meeting yours
“I know this was a virtual marriage, but I was always sincere every moment I spent with you. I just thought I’d tell you that before we started filiming.”
And he walked off towards his waiting room, and left you standing there not too sure what to do anymore
During the filming, you struggled not to cry as Minhyun’s hand held yours
The movie theatre dimmed and started playing all the memories you’d made together
it was making you so emotional, and the sad piano BGM playing did not help at all
so you couldn’t stop the tears from falling when the video cut to a solo shot of Minhyun sending you a video message
“…This marriage may be coming to an end, but I will always treasure all the times and memories we made together…”
Covering a hand over your mouth, you tried not to sob out loud but it ended up sounding like you were having a coughing fit
Minhyun had been quite cold to you after the encounter earlier that day, and hadn’t been particularly affectionate at all, but when he looked over at you, his face went from expressionless to one of alarm when he noticed that your cheeks were stained with tears
he immediately reached over and gently dabbed the tears away with his sleeve and pulled you into his chest
“hey, hey, don’t cry Y/N, it’s alright, babe don’t cry, I’m here for you.”
and this only made you sniffle more
Minhyun’s hand was soothingly patting the back of your head and for a minute you both forgot about the cameras as he pulled back and gently pressed his lips to your forehead
and it was such a touching and emotional moment
until you hiccupped
and Minhyun broke out into laughter his own eyes shining back at you
and you couldn’t help but join in with him in the laughter
you left the set holding hands, still sad but not as emotional as before
and you realised that this would be the last chance for you to say something
“Minhyun?”
He glanced down at you his gaze softening at the sight of your puffy eyes
“This isn’t goodbye right? Just because we’re not on the show anymore doesn’t mean we can’t see each other right?”
Minhyun just kinda looks at you like you’re crazy
“Did you really think that I’d just go on this show with you, the girl that i actually truly like, just to never talk to you again now the show’s over?”
and you were like ?? blinking in confusion…because minhyun actually does like like you, and it’s not one sided like you assumed girl it was so obv tho
He kept talking, “I looked forward to the days when i’d get to see you to film, because spending time with you is like the most natural thing in the world to me. Look I even keep this photo we took in my wallet.”
He shows you a cute little photo of the two of you at the cafe you’d been to on the first date.
“So Y/N? Don’t worry, this won’t be goodbye, you can’t get rid of your virtual husband that easily,” he says shooting finger hearts and winks at you
So, legitimately dating Minhyun is obviously not as open and conspicuous as WGM, but it’s still super cute
and on your first anniversary the two of you go on a late night outing to the cafe where you had your first date
and you buy the same drinks you had on that day and just enjoy each others company, forever grateful that you have Minhyun in your life
I hit 100 followers the other day and I’m so so grateful, thank you to everyone who reads my random little writings, even though I’m definitely still lacking lots! I’m working on the current requests that were sent in, so please hold tight if you’re still waiting~ ❤️❤️

The Cat Art Show: 'It's no f*cking joke'
Tumblr media
Hundreds of self-proclaimed cat people gathered in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday night for the opening of Cat Art Show, a gallery of multimedia pieces that share one theme: love of cats.
Shannon Leigh, whose bright blue dress was printed with cats wearing smaller, brighter dresses, didn't expect an actual gallery of fine art when she first attended three years ago.
"I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of art here," Leigh said. "Like, this is a legit art show that just happens to be about cats."
A post shared by Dirty Lola (@scarlett_river) on Jun 2, 2018 at 8:34pm PDT
The fact that people pass off the show as some kind of niche event for "hoarder spinsters" strikes a nerve for Susan Michals, Cat Art Show's founder and curator.
"They think it's a joke," she bristled. "And that's something I've been up against for a long time, but it's no fucking joke."
And the show feels like a real art show because it is a real art show. Over 140 pieces were on display in the gallery. A bar served frosé and IPAs, and patrons dressed in sleek (although cat-themed) outfits posed for photos at a professionally lit booth. The show's 11-day run includes a variety of cat-themed events, from a lecture on "famous feline history" to a cat-themed burlesque performance by Vanessa Burgundy. (Who, by the way, said her choreography required thinking "out of the litter box.")
"I saw there was a misrepresentation, perhaps, of what it meant to be a cat lady," Michals said. She wanted to curate a collection that would marry pop culture's love of cats with the art world's emerging creators.

"Apollo and Garfield" by Tiffany Sage

The former journalist and current feline enthusiast started the show in 2014. Some of the pieces she curated for this year's show are political — like Rose Freymuth-Frazier's "Divine Intervention," which features a fluffy white cat pinning down a plush Trump with its paw. Others, as Michals describes it, "are simply an interpretation of our beloved."
And most of the opening night's attendees really, really love cats. According to Amy Douan, who wore a pink cat-printed dress for the occasion, "everyone should have at least two cats."
Douan is the proud owner of four, and would get more if her apartment could fit them.
The artists share a similar love for our feline friends. Casey Weldon didn't participate in last year's Cat Art Show because he had already launched a solo show in New York where all of his pieces were cat themed. He called cats the "ultimate symbol of ironic humor."
"It's a lot of fun to make creepy stuff and put a cat on it," he said. His collection was inspired by vintage Valentine's Day cards, but instead of sappy messages, the cat-themed Valentines have angsty lyrics from '80s rock songs.

Weldon isn't the only artist whose work revolves around cats — Scarlett River, whose painting of a cat dressed as a sad clown was inspired by her own cat named Chicken Lady, said she had a "heavily influenced cat portfolio." She added that cats are "the most fascinating, wonderful creatures" and laments that the public "has them all wrong." River also insisted that they experience human emotions like jealousy more than other animals do.
Dr. Paul Koudounaris, a historian and photographer, said cats can "serve as a muse in a way that other animals can't."
Describing cats as "enigmatic" and "sensual," Koudounaris pointed out that for 19th century poets, the pets were considered "necessary equipment for an artistic personality."
Michals agreed, pointing out how innately aesthetic the feline form is: "There's a certain beauty in the way they jump or curl up."
Koudounaris' portrait for Cat Art Show — aptly titled "Mewcifer" — is part of a collection of photographs featuring his cat dressed in different costumes. He's also writing a book from the perspective of his cat — for him, it's more than just a photo series, it's "an experiment in interspecies communication."

"The bond between us was such that somehow it became a game where she realized she could please me," Koudounaris said when asked how he got his cat to wear a costume and pose for photos. "Just by my body movement or my posture, she knows what's working and what's not working."
The art show — and CatCon, a cat-themed convention that Michals also founded seeks to cultivate a community for cat lovers that they wouldn't normally get in real life. Since cats are such solitary creatures, most cat owners bond online through social media. At events like this, she said, "you've come together for your love of animals."
For Melissa Aaron, a cat enthusiast and professor, it's just fun to meet other cat people.
"If you have a dog, you can take them to the dog park," she said. "If you're a cat person, welp!"

the thing journal, 6.25-7.1
capsule reviews of the things i attempted to take in last week. in this post: super! pop psychology! oxymoron! crush! beyonce! fake sugar! ctrl! 45 jokes about my dead dad! southsiders! the retrieval! before sunset!
1) Super, dir. James Gunn: A film I think about a lot is Observe & Report. That is an insane film that people were actually given money to make, and it's insane because it plunges deep, deep inside the mind of this psychotic man who thinks he's the one standing between order and chaos, and it's great for that reason, because it doesn't shy away from the ludicrous darkness of that crazy, crazy person. The only way this film is worth watching is if this film takes an Observe & Report-deep look at the motivations of its protagonist, and it doesn't come anywhere close to being that audacious. But this film is dealing with a deeply crazy person, a man who dresses in spandex and beats people with a pipe wrench, and it needed to treat that person like a crazy person, not like a hero. When Ellen Page (the absolute highlight of this film) starts taking it too far, Rainn Wilson can't suddenly pull back, the film either needs to show how he encouraged that wanton violence or have him standing to the side, beaming at the great work his protege is doing. Like, the Crimson Bolt is aware on some level that what he's doing is wrong, and the film doesn't work precisely because the character has that awareness. Not the worst film I've seen all year (I was lurking in a Twitch stream (this one, it’s dope) last night where people in the chat were defending Sausage Party and I swear to Christ I was ten deep breaths away from getting myself banned for yelling at them for their bad opinion), but definitely a bummer.
2) Pop Psychology, by Neon Trees: this was a good album. you know the thing about listening to a three-year-old pop album, though? regular soda pop has an expiration date of three months. but it's not like pop really goes bad, it just kinda falls flat, so if you were to ever drink a three-year-old soda pop, it'd still have that same coke taste, it just wouldn't have the bubbles, wouldn't have that texture. and it's not this album's fault i let it expire, we've been over this, i wasn't doing my part in the mid-tens, if i got this fresh out the fridge i'd have much fonder memories (insofar as anyone remembers a specific soda, and not the general memory of drinking soda pop on summer nights). but this wasn't really designed to be consumed three years after production, and that's too bad, neon trees always made really solid pop music, and i'm sure they could've made something truly dope if they put their minds to it. pop ain't bad, though.
3) Oxymoron, by ScHoolboy Q: Gang life is a nightmare and this is an album that puts those nightmarish aspects at the fore. Like, one of my favorite albums of last year, The Game's 1992, didn't necessarily shy away from the horrors of the life, but it also coated over them with the '90s nostalgia, The Game occasionally getting lost remembering listening to 2Pac and Dre and thinking about the OJ trial, whereas this album says "No, this sucks," with these loud and jarring beats and Q's constant growling painting a portrait of the violence and the constant anger one experiences being caught in that life. It's a notably unique vision, but more importantly, it's honestly a joy to listen to, it's an exceedingly dark album but it never feels like a burden, Q is still making music that is meant to be enjoyed and not just pondered over. It's awesome. All of you who've already listened to it should strongly consider giving it another spin.
4) Crush, by 2NE1: I said I wanted to explore the music of 2014. I said I needed to get caught up on the music that wasn't made by white dudes with guitars. I wanted to travel the world. This showed up on the list of notable 2014 releases. So: here we are! Though like let's be real the only difference between this and any other pop music is the language, and even then, I'm sure 2NE1 is saying nice things about love or mean things about a former lover. I thought this three-year-old K-pop album was very nice, and I do not regret listening to it! Than you, K-pop! We'll catch up again when I get to 2011 and the attendant Girls' Generation release
5) Beyonce: the album everyone said was very good that whirlwind night in 2014 was abso-goddamn-lutely right. like, i'm not gonna go too in-depth because you could read any number of thinkpieces and the album is, in a word, flawless, but it's kind of a bummer for me that the consensus is that Lemonade is better than this. I think Lemonade's more ambitious and deals with more personal issues, but, and I will say this a billion times before I eventually abandon this series where I try to talk about anything, heartbreak and sadness are not inherently deeper emotions than love and happiness. Like, "Daddy Lessons" is the best song on either album bar none (and even that's a jubilant sort of fuck you), but there's at least five songs on here that are better than the second-best song on Lemonade. Don't try and tell me "XO" ain't better than "Hold Up." Things that are about nice things are good, y'know? That's just how I feel.
6) Fake Sugar, by Beth Ditto: I can't believe I nearly forgot to include this album. Like, I had the other ten bitlets written, I was ready to copy+paste into the tumblr text field, and I said, "Didn't I listen to something really cool while trapped on the bus on Wednesday?" and I looked in my recents and THERE WAS THIS. THIS GODDAMNED TOWER OF SYNTHPOP MASTERY. I was intrigued by this album because the AV Club's preview said it had a Nashvilley sound to it, and I'm like, hey, I'm down for something vaguely country, and like. This isn't? country? But it's just like insanely good, like I was just blown away, I hadn't expected it to be epic soaring synthpop but epic soaring synthpop is my jam and I was there for it. (It should be noted that I hadn't actually heard of Gossip before like two weeks ago, and now I'm really stoked to sink into their back catalogue once I get out of 2014.)
7) Ctrl, by SZA: "this album is so good in ways i'll never be able to properly articulate," bob said for the hundreth time, relaxing after another bitlet well wroted flew from his hands into the eyes of ones Like, just the way it gets slowly more surreal as the album proceeds, SZA, like, I dunno, gliding in and out of this dream state while still keeping just in touch with reality enough that she never goes too far out of grasp? Look I'm not smart, I'm not gonna pretend I know what I'm talking about after just a couple listens, I just know it's heckin' great and well worth your time. It's so dope, and I feel like I'm failing this album by not coming up with anything substantive to say about it. We got, what, six deep into this post before I apologized to some entity or another for not being able to properly express my love? New PB. We'll get that perfect post one day.
8) 45 Jokes About My Dead Dad, by Laurie Kilmartin: it says a lot about my sensibility that i knew i'd be into this album the second i saw this album title, like hell yeah, i am in here for all these jokes about your dead dad, HIT ME. i am a fan of jokes about dead parents. it's an incredible album, like, there's a joke where her son asks her why everyone at the funeral is sad and she says it's because they're at a funeral and her son asks "are you sad because i'm not playing Minecraft?" while reaching for her phone and that joke sent me soaring above the tallest remaining rainforest where i mingled with the clouds and the other blessed creatures, and it maybe cracks the top ten. it's so good! like, i legit listened to it twice in a row, that was something where i knew i missed so much from laughing too hard. good work and sorry about your dad.
9) Southsiders, by Atmosphere: Whenever I feel disconnected from Minneapolis, I remember that I live in the same city as the Rhymesayers offices and reroot myself. I will cop to not being that deep in the Rhymesayers catalogue, but knowing my local music scene makes vital and lasting records means a lot to me, and the main thing that keeps me from moving to another city, apart from the fact I don't drive, is that I'll never feel as close to whatever music that city makes as I do to Atmosphere. This isn't really a review insofar as it's me writing a love letter to Atmosphere.
10) The Retrieval, dir. Chris Eska: Dear MUBI, either I'm blind or there were no subtitles available for this film, and if there WERE no subtitles, I am hella available to offer transcription services for you. (I am not a professional transcriptor and have not transcribed anything before, don't hire me.) 'Cuz hoo boy, these were some mumbly, mumbly people. You can figure out what's going on because the plot isn't terribly complex (it's vaguely reminiscent of the single-greatest achievement in filmmaking history, Brother Bear) and all involved are giving wonderful performances, you don't necessarily need to hear Scruffy tell Band of Outsiders "He's a good kid." It communicates its story visually, and that's a dumb thing to say about a movie, but I'm dumb at movies so heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
11) Before Sunset, dir. Richard Linklater: I'm going to be referring to this as my favorite fantasy film of all time. NUTS TO YOU, PRISONER OF AZKABAN. (I don’t watch much fantasy.) The first film does have some plausibility, and it probably even actually happened, you spend one magical night with someone and spend the rest of your life thinking about them. I remain convinced that my soulmate was this girl I hung out with at a Cub Foods family picnic the summer before seventh grade. (An Atmosphere reference and a Cub Foods shout-out. This is a Minnesota-ass journal this week.) But there's no chance that you'd ever actually see that person again, so this film, about two people who have spent nearly a decade thinking about each other and letting that inform their lives, letting the love from that night sort of ruin the way they looked at love, seeing each other again is roughly as implausible as an orc. And it's that layer of fantasy that makes this a much more fulfilling movie than the first one. It's not just two twenty-somethings in love, it's two thirty-somethings who've lived and loved and hurt and now have an hour and change to express everything they've been thinking about the source of that life and love and pain for the last decade. And it's beautiful, like, I wanna have the scene where they talk about desire and goals and process playing on an infinite loop on some screen in my house. ("Isn't not wanting anything a symptom of depression?") I'm way more psyched to get to Before Midnight after this than I was for this after Before Sunrise.
