[from prof-cypress sideblog] The Citrus Blossom Peninsula! I can't say I've ever been there but I've heard so much about it and it's not terribly far away from Leeno [AKA Texas], where I was born and raised. Welcome, new blogger! Hope you find your stay interesting and educational.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I'm afraid I haven't been to Leeno myself, though I do have some good friends who are currently living in Bigheart City; I've been meaning to visit them when life gets a little less crazy, but I just haven't had the opportunity to travel out of the region with the lab so busy. Especially now, when we're getting hit by the post-Easter phone calls from parents who went out and traded/ bought/caught pokemon for their underage children. Scorbunnies and torchics are cute, but I wish people would listen when we advise them not to get them as a spur-of-the-moment holiday decision, especially if they have no experience handling fire types and don't know if the pokemon will be a good match for the household and their lifestyle.

But, no rest for the wicked. Thank you again for the message!

Yotey, yipyoti, latransoul.

Based on coyotes.

Pure fire type starter for the first two evos, then ends up fire/ghost.

For yotey: The name is derived from coyote.

For yipyoti: "Yip," a word for the most common vocalization coyotes make + "yoti" derived from coyote.

For latransoul: "Latrans," part of the scientific name for coyotes + "soul."

Yotey are happy to enthusiastically sing along with any music they hear, anything from smooth classical to raucous heavy metal. If they can find a tune, they’ll howl along. Different yotey have differing musical tastes. They’re also happy to use their fire to help warm up the meats they eat, which is what all members of this line do in the wild in their packs.

Yipyoti get a very bad rep, even worse than stemkuma do. They roam semiurban areas scrounging for food scraps and sometimes threaten people’s pet pokémon, so some humans say the world is better off without them. In truth, they play an important role in the ecology of Leeno, sensing when a forest needs a wildfire so it can regrow back better and keeping down small pokémon populations, promoting biodiversity.

Latransoul have perfected all the skills of their previous evolutions, their voices lifting in harrowing and ominous songs during the nighttime, razing cramped underbrush, and stacked dead detritus. They don’t appreciate human litter in their pack territories and will haunt anyone they find leaving behind such pollution for days.

Oncat (“Onca,” the scientific name for jaguars + “cat) and jagrowl (“jaguar” + “growl”) are a species with two regional variants, one—grass/water, in both evolutionary stages—in Nanahuac (analog of Mexico) and southernmost Leeno (analog of Texas; also in other regions analogous of southwestern US states), and the other—dark/water, in both evolutionary stages—in the Meridio rainforest as well as an area mirroring the Pantanal which I haven’t given a name yet (both of which span multiple regions analogous to South American countries)

Nanahuacan oncat are greener than their Meridioan counterparts. Withdrawn and reserved, these oncat greatly dislike being bothered when they’re taking their daily sunning rest and will Water Gun anyone who disturbs them without hesitation. They will easily prey upon anything that ventures near the natural water sources they linger on the edges of.

Meridioan oncat are bluer than their Nanahuacan counterparts. People find them cute despite how they are not very tiny or docile. These feline pokémon are prone to lightly biting and using their claws while play-fighting, which can lead to blood being drawn unintentionally. That doesn’t mean they don’t love you! Just that they don’t know their strength sometimes.

Nanahuacan jagrowl are leaner and smaller than their darker Meridioan counterparts. They have an extremely accurate sense of when water is nearby and can dig up hidden underground springs. They are usually loners in the wild. They’re seen as blessings by some humans because there are many stories of people lost without access to water finding some because they followed a jagrowl.

Meridioan jagrowl are much stockier and more intimidating than their grassy Nanahuacan counterparts. They are amphibian and have a tendency to bulldoze their opponents. Stalking their prey in the shadows, they are cunning brutes and make interesting teammates for any given trainer, but be warned, they are not suited to be owned by a novice. They are known to cohabit peacefully with others of their own kind in the wild.

Tweecitta (“tweet” + “Cyanocitta,” the scientific name for blue jays) is a flying type pokémon, it has two more evolutionary stages which are also pure flying. The second is cyanowing (“Cyanocitta” + “wing”), and the last is passeridaw (“passerine” + “jackdaw”).

Based on bluejays and jackdaws.

Tweecitta: These bird pokémon are known for acting as bullies, but if you earn their respect, they are a greatly valuable companion because they tend to watch other those they care about like bodyguards.

Cyanowing are very aggressive and territorial, especially in the wild toward other bird pokémon. They can be very touchy and oversensitive even to their longtime human owners, though this is often merely dramatics, they’d never harm anyone they trust.

As a battler, passeridaw are quick and efficient. As a pokémon partner, they are wise and patient. Their previous evolutionary stages have taught them many important life lessons and they no longer behave like fools.

Leeno’s population is made up of people of one or more of these three heritages: Nanahuacan descent, native Leenoan descent, or descended from people who migrated to Leeno from other regions.

The Nanahuac region (based on Mexico) is next to southern Leeno. Long ago, the people of Leeno once warred with Nanahuac for its independence from it, and the most major of these battles happened at what is now called the Old Fortress, where the Leenoans won.

Nitacub, stemkuma, arktofolio.

Based on American black bears.

Pure grass type starter for the first two evos, then ends up grass/steel.

For nitacub: “Nita,” Alabama/Chickasaw/Choctaw word for bear, + “cub.”

For stemkuma: “Stem” + “kuma,” Japanese word for bear.

For arktofolio: “Árktos,” Greek word for bear + “folio,” Esperanto word for leaf.

Nitacub are known as pretty timid pokémon, constantly following around anyone or anything it imprints on as a parental figure. They're also playful and love eating berries regularly. Don't let their shy and dependent demeanor fool you, though, they're eager to please their trainers.

Stemkuma like to rummage through people's trash bins for food. This is often seen as a pesty and undesirable behavior, but this pokémon's omnivorous instinct to forage is far too strong for the behavior to ever really die out.

Arktofolio are fierce protectors of anyone and anything they dearly care for. Impressive and intimidating, they're a huge and important part of native Leenoan cultural lore, revered as great defenders of family, and it's easy to see why: they would never let a loved one be hurt.

Bonneta.

Based on the bluebonnet flower.

Pure grass type, single stage.

Name derived from bonnet.

This pokémon is very attracted to the color blue like itself, and will hoard all sorts of things that are blue. They also love its durable pistil being scritched in just the right way. In the wild they rub their pistil against things to get the same sensation, which spreads its natural, harmless pollen around.

Ceana spent years as the assistant of Professor Shumard (a lady then in her 40s, now she is 50) in the Leeno region, as part of her studies to become a prof. herself. Shumard was a bit of a hard-nosed person (though not unkind), believed in getting your hands dirty with hard work, kinda like how Peach (@prof-peach) is, except Shumard is better with people in general than Peach -- no offense lol, and she has never worked out like Peach does, so she isn't buff either. Anyway, Ceana learned a lot of valuable life lessons and academic and field lessons from Shumard.

3. What is your OC's financial status? Are they just scraping by, making enough to live comfortably, or wealthy? Has there ever been a drastic change in their status? If so, what happened?

JB grew up in poverty back in Bigheart, Leeno region, and positively clawed his way up to where he is now with sheer hopefulness and hard work in school. He loves his career and put his all into it from day one. Things are a lot easier now, especially when research grants are given, but JB is still not rich and honestly does not expect himself to ever be. It doesn't bother him. As long as he can do his beloved job, everything is fine.

Prof. Jules Sacheverell is a bit different, from a family researchers/scientists/professors, moderately more wealthy than JB's biofamily (being smart at your career doesn't automatically make you affluent), but he doesn't look down on anyone who doesn't have that kind of pre-knowledge in their family background. He's a really mellow and quiet guy, though people often assume otherwise with the scarring on his face, but they quickly learn that he's simply quite focused on what he does for a living. He and JB get along very professionally since Jules is normally quite introverted; JB sometimes wonders if Jules doesn't like him.

(The truth is that Jules thinks JB is a bit too frivolous, but it's not enough to think he's bad at his work, so he doesn't bring it up.)

Ceana's paternal grandma (Belinda Cafferty/"Grammy") got wind of her son not allowing her granddaughter to take on a typical kid trainer's journey and did something about it when Ceana was 11. If Stanley wasn't willing to keep an eye on her for the journey, then she would! She and Ceana had never been very close, so she saw it as a bonding opportunity.

As an adult Ceana of course, realized 11 years old was far too young to begin such a thing, and advocates for a minimum age of 15 for a kid to begin proving they're prepared to become a true trainer. But that's the present day. Back then, she just wasn't ready mentally for the intense responsibilities of caring for other life-forms by herself. Her first 'mon was the Leeno region's fire starter, a young male yotey.

She named it Ivan. Try as she might, Ivan was rowdy and didn't listen to her well, and this resulted in Ivan dying in a battle against a far stronger, fully-grown, wild arktofolio which had no mercy for little fools. Ceana was 12 and hadn't caught any other 'mon for her team, so she had to run for her life back to the nearest town. It scarred her badly, and even though she's worked past her fear of arktofolio since then, it's still a dark memory that she doesn't talk about much. The gentle lesson with the shuppet before fiercely paled compared to this.

Belinda had been waiting inside the PokéCenter of that town waiting for her grandkid to return from the local woods with a newly caught nyazome, as the girl had planned to do, only to be horrified at the state Ceana came back to her in. Ceana was mute for weeks. She resolved to not be a trainer anymore. After a year or so of psychological recovery, she tentatively focused on becoming a poké-professor (now 13 years old) instead, which became her new special interest.

Kaktochi (“káktos,” the Ancient Greek word for cactuses + “-chi,” a cutesy suffix) is a single-stage evolution electric/grass type pokémon.

Based off prairie dogs.

Kaktochi are found in the sands of western Leeno, where it needs shockingly little water to survive in the overbearing heat. In the cold desert nights, they cuddle together in groups within underground dens to preserve warmth.

Note: these are the Leeno region's resident pikachu clones.
