The new Æthelflaed statue outside Tamworth Railway Station, erected to commemorate 1,100 years since her death in Tamworth. Her spear points visitors towards the town centre and Tamworth Castle.
Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians (c. 870 – 12 June 918) ruled Mercia in the English Midlands from 911 until her death. She was the eldest daughter of Alfred the Great, king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex, and his wife Ealhswith.
Æthelflæd was born around 870 at the height of the Viking invasions of England. By 878, most of England was under Danish Viking rule – East Anglia and Northumbria having been conquered, and Mercia partitioned between the English and the Vikings – but in that year Alfred won a crucial victory at the Battle of Edington. Soon afterwards the English-controlled western half of Mercia came under the rule of Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians, who accepted Alfred's overlordship. Alfred adopted the title King of the Anglo-Saxons (previously he was titled King of the West Saxons like his predecessors) claiming to rule all Anglo-Saxon people not living in areas under Viking control. In the mid-880s, Alfred sealed the strategic alliance between the surviving English kingdoms by marrying Æthelflæd to Æthelred.
Æthelred played a major role in fighting off renewed Viking attacks in the 890s, together with Æthelflæd's brother, the future King Edward the Elder. Æthelred and Æthelflæd fortified Worcester, gave generous donations to Mercian churches and built a new minster in Gloucester. Æthelred's health probably declined early in the next decade, after which it is likely that Æthelflæd was mainly responsible for the government of Mercia. Edward had succeeded as King of the Anglo-Saxons in 899, and in 909 he sent a West Saxon and Mercian force to raid the northern Danelaw. They returned with the remains of the royal Northumbrian saint Oswald, which were translated to the new Gloucester minster. Æthelred died in 911 and Æthelflæd then ruled Mercia as Lady of the Mercians. The accession of a female ruler in Mercia is described by the historian Ian Walker as "one of the most unique events in early medieval history".
Alfred had built a network of fortified burhs and in the 910s Edward and Æthelflæd embarked on a programme of extending them. Among the towns where she built defences were Wednesbury, Bridgnorth, Tamworth, Stafford, Warwick, Chirbury and Runcorn. In 917 she sent an army to capture Derby, the first of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw to fall to the English, a victory described by Tim Clarkson as "her greatest triumph". In 918 Leicester surrendered without a fight. Shortly afterwards the Viking leaders of York offered her their loyalty, but she died on 12 June 918 before she could take advantage of the offer, and a few months later Edward completed the conquest of Mercia. Æthelflæd was succeeded by her daughter Ælfwynn, but in December Edward took personal control of Mercia and carried Ælfwynn off to Wessex.
Historians disagree whether Mercia was an independent kingdom under Æthelred and Æthelflæd but they agree that Æthelflæd was a great ruler who played an important part in the conquest of the Danelaw. She was praised by Anglo-Norman chroniclers such as William of Malmesbury, who described her as "a powerful accession to [Edward's] party, the delight of his subjects, the dread of his enemies, a woman of enlarged soul". According to Pauline Stafford, "like ... Elizabeth I she became a wonder to later ages". In Nick Higham's view, medieval and modern writers have been so captivated by her that Edward's reputation has suffered unfairly in comparison.

Action is needed to show nurses of colour that their contribution is valued and their lives matter, as opposed to words, nursing leaders have warned on the third annual Windrush Day.
On this day in 1948, the first group of people arrived in Essex from the Caribbean on the Empire Windrush cruise ship, pictured above, answering the UK’s call for public sector workers following the Second World War.
“There is still so much to do to level the playing field for people of colour in the UK" Trevor Sterling
Many of these passengers and the other members of the Windrush Generation – along with their descendants – were or would go on to become nurses, helping to create the National Health Service.
The government announced in 2018 that 22 July would become an annual holiday to celebrate the British-Caribbean community and to thank those who helped to rebuild Britain after the war.
The designation came in the wake of the Windrush Scandal in which stories of Commonwealth citizens being wrongfully detained, deported and denied their rights came to light.
Windrush Day this year is particularly poignant as it coincides with a time of national and international reflection on the racial inequalities in our society brought to stark attention by Covid-19 and the Black Lives Matters movement.
More on this topic:

Exclusive: BME nurses ‘feel targeted’ to work on Covid-19 wards
NHS leaders set out new measures to protect BME staff in pandemic
Professor Greta Westwood, chief executive of the Florence Nightingale Foundation, said more needed to be done to “redress the current imbalance” in nursing in terms of race.
While 20% of the overall NHS nursing and midwifery workforce in England is from a black, Asian or ethnic minority (BAME) background, the percentage reduces to 4% for director-level nursing posts.
“It saddens me today to see that our BAME staff, whose own ancestors helped to build the NHS, still feel that they have to break through glass ceilings to succeed,” said Professor Westwood.
Tumblr media
Greta Westwood
The foundation launched the Windrush Leadership Programme to help BAME nurses at bands 5 to 6 reach senior leadership positions and now also runs Windrush Leadership Scholarships.
Some of the BAME nurses and midwives who applied to the programme had been in their band 5 roles for more than 20 years.
“Since its foundation, the Windrush Leadership Programme has helped BAME staff find their voice and rightfully claim their place as senior leaders in the NHS,” added Professor Westwood.
“I urge my fellow NHS and other healthcare leaders to redress the current imbalance. We as the foundation will continue to foster this talent, but it is our collective responsibility to work together. Action not words create change.”
One Windrush scholar, Deborah Hylton, said when she joined the programme, she was working as a band 6 health visitor and was struggling with “self-doubt” after being continuously turned down for band 7 roles.
Inspired by her sister and sister-in-law who both came to the UK from the Caribbean when she was 13 and trained as nurses, Ms Hylton joined the nursing profession as a mature student with two young children to “give back to my community”.
She said the “confidence and skills” she gained through the course helped her to secure her current role as a lecturer in children’s nursing at London South Bank University.
“I am now in a position where I can encourage student nurses from all ethnic groups that nothing is impossible. I am able to stand in front of them as their lecturer and role model and make them aware of another career direction that nursing can offer,” said Ms Hylton.
Meanwhile, staff from four London hospitals will tonight mark Windrush Day by gathering outside their buildings at 5pm and taking a knee to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
The protest will be observed by workers at St Thomas Hospital, Kings College Hospital, South London and Maudsley Hospitals, and Lewisham University Hospital.
The action is being organised by Unite the union at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, and Royal College of Nursing Inner South East London.
Mark Boothroyd, Unite branch secretary for Guy's and St Thomas', said: “The NHS has the same problems of systemic racism as every other part of society.
“With over 50% of nursing staff in London being from BME backgrounds and directly affected by this, its important staff can show their support for Black Lives Matter, and push their own employers to make changes to tackle the ongoing issue of racism in the NHS.”
The RCN is also using Windrush Day to urge the Home Office to grant indefinite leave to remain to all international health and care workers who have worked in the UK during the pandemic.
“The NHS has the same problems of systemic racism as every other part of society" Mark Boothroyd
Dame Donna Kinnair, RCN chief executive and general secretary, said: “The best way to honour the legacy of Windrush Day is to ensure no nurse, or health and care worker, who trained overseas, and helped in this pandemic, feels alien in this country.
“Granting automatic, indefinite leave to remain to international health and care workers who helped tackle this virus should be instinctive.
“The services and support that they provide, though brought to the fore through this pandemic, have always been essential. They are, and always will be, key workers.”
More than one in 10 of the total registered nursing workforce in the UK come from overseas, according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council. As of September 2019, 77,065 registered nurses came from outside the European Economic Area.
However, international nursing staff must wait five years before they can apply for indefinite leave to remain and are required to take a test to prove their Britishness before they are granted it.
Tumblr media
Donna Kinnair
Another organisation demanding action over words is the Mary Seacole Trust which exists to educate the public about the life of the British-Jamaican nursing pioneer who cared for soldiers during the Crimean War, working against both racism and sexism.
The trust oversaw the creation of a Mary Seacole statue in 2016 in the grounds of St Thomas' Hospital, becoming the first statue in the UK in honour of a named black woman.
To mark Windrush Day, the organisation is calling for a national “black plaque scheme” to educate the public on UK black history.
It has written to the prime minister and London mayor to request that plaques are put up next to all British statues to explain the historical context, with the wording decided in collaboration with members of the black community.
Trevor Sterling, chair of the Mary Seacole Trust, said: “Windrush Day has a huge significance for me, my family and countless other black people in the UK.
Tumblr media
Trevor Sterling
“Since the Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury in 1948, we have been contributing to our communities in Britain, and yet like Mary Seacole, our contributions are not fully recognised.
“There is still so much to do to level the playing field for people of colour in the UK, as seen most recently in the disproportionate number of BAME coronavirus deaths.
“Education about black British history must be central to all policy changes. If we are to truly address racism in the UK, we must first educate British citizens."

Porsche Experience Centre to open in Singapore by 2027
Singapore’s tourism sector is on the cusp of a transformative journey, with an array of innovative developments set to redefine the visitor experience. As projections soar between 15 million to 16.5 million international arrivals for 2024, Singapore anticipates a remarkable surge in tourism receipts, estimated to reach an unprecedented S$27.5 billion to S$29 billion.
Tumblr media
One of the most eagerly awaited additions to Singapore’s tourism landscape is the forthcoming Porsche Experience Centre, slated to grace Changi Exhibition Centre by 2027. This groundbreaking venture marks Porsche’s inaugural foray into Southeast Asia, promising an exhilarating array of offerings. With a 2km handling track and immersive experiences such as themed exhibitions and state-of-the-art racing simulators, the centre is poised to captivate automotive enthusiasts and thrill-seekers alike, further enhancing Singapore’s appeal as a premier tourist destination.
Photo: Porsche Asia Pacific
In addition to the adrenaline-pumping experiences at the Porsche Experience Centre, Singapore is also set to unveil a world-class wellness attraction along its southern coast near Marina Barrage. With the global wellness market reaching staggering heights, projected to hit US$5.2 trillion in 2022 and forecasted to approach US$8 trillion by 2027, Singapore aims to position itself as a leading urban wellness haven. Leveraging its picturesque waterfront and strategic location, the new attraction will offer a diverse range of wellness experiences, encompassing therapeutic arts, advanced therapies, and fitness activities. Against the backdrop of Singapore’s iconic skyline, visitors will embark on a transformative journey of rejuvenation and relaxation, further cementing Singapore’s status as a holistic wellness destination.
As Singapore endeavors to elevate its tourism offerings to new heights, strategic partnerships and collaborative initiatives are integral to its success. Marina Bay Sands, UOB, and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) have forged a memorandum of understanding aimed at driving awareness and bolstering visitorship to the Marina Bay precinct. Building on the momentum generated by past initiatives, such as the mesmerizing dragon drone show over Marina Bay earlier this year, these collaborative efforts underscore Singapore’s commitment to delivering unparalleled experiences to visitors.
Furthermore, STB has inked a strategic partnership with Sentosa Development Corporation, Resorts World Sentosa, and DBS to capitalize on the allure of Sentosa Island’s new attractions. By leveraging synergies and harnessing the collective strengths of these key stakeholders, Singapore aims to amplify its appeal as a must-visit destination, offering an array of world-class attractions and experiences to visitors.
In the midst of Singapore’s tourism renaissance, the spotlight also shines on local talent development and industry leadership. Recognizing the pivotal role of skilled professionals in driving the sector’s growth, STB is set to launch the Tourism Leadership Programme by the fourth quarter of this year. Designed to equip industry leaders with the requisite skills and expertise to navigate the evolving tourism landscape, this initiative underscores Singapore’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering innovation within the sector.
However, amid the promising outlook for Singapore’s tourism sector, challenges and competition loom on the horizon. With Southeast Asia poised to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, leisure demand from affluent consumers is expected to surge, intensifying competition among destinations. Against this backdrop, Singapore faces the imperative of delivering exceptional, value-driven experiences that resonate with discerning travelers.

Singapore’s tourism sector stands at a pivotal juncture, poised for unprecedented growth and transformation. With a bold vision for the future and a commitment to excellence, Singapore is primed to emerge as a leading global tourist destination, offering unparalleled experiences that captivate the hearts and minds of visitors from around the world.

5 Best Proximity Marketing Ideas to Enhance Customer Experience
Tumblr media
Retail stores, hotels, stadiums, transportation hubs and restaurant outlets are large users of proximity marketing that allows business owners and marketing leaders to reach potential customers and visitors with promotional content based on their current location.
The Proximity marketing market industry is projected to grow to US $360.5 billion by 2030, revealing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.44%.
In this article, we will discuss five best proximity marketing ideas to enhance customer experience and loyalty.
What are the best proximity marketing ideas for your customer-centric or visitor-centric business?
The best of best proximity marketing, also known as place-based marketing or geo-marketing tactics are facilitated by indoor positioning technology, bluetooth low energy (BLE) beacons, wi-fi and quick response (QR) codes for:
1-  Locally advertising products or services
Imagine it is the launch day for your new product line and you may have performed successful digital marketing campaigns to attract crowd to your store. But, are overlooking the importance of targeting the ones who are around the store during the launch day?
This is where proximity marketing can help retailers create a buzz to customers around (Approximately 1-5 km of range) the store through geofencing, mobile proximity marketing application notification and interactive map integration.
Tip: Offer a personalized discount coupon claiming experience for repeat customers based on their past purchases.
Create a sense of urgency in your discount coupons to encourage new customers around your store to visit and take action on the go.
2- Performing retargeting and loyalty programs
Let's say you are a coffee shop owner and you have many customers visiting your coffee shop, but have you adopted a practice that can encourage them to re-visit and spend more?
Proximity marketing solution through beacon technology is the current buzzword for retail shop owners to perform retargeting and loyalty programmes.
Tip: Trigger promotional discounts for customers who enter the store, based on their previous purchases.
Target customers who have already made purchases and are leaving the store, with a loyalty-based personalized discount offer that they can avail in their next purchases.
3- Performing in-store visitor behavioural analysis
You have offered a great retail store layout and shoppers often follow the multiple pathways available in your store. Some pathways within the store might be overcrowded while some are hardly used due to many reasons.
Proximity marketing technology like beacons is helping retail business owners to collect visitor's in-store behaviour which later can be visualized through heatmaps.
Tip: Optimize product placements and digital signage based on customer behaviour analysis.
Strategize store layout changes based on the most used pathway and the ones that require more attention.
4- Interactive Indoor Navigation
Large retailers and supermarkets accommodate giant crowds, especially during the holiday season. You would not like your retail store visitors to end up waiting in incorrect queues or led in the wrong direction.
Location-based positioning technology makes for the best proximity marketing solution available today that does not rely on any external hardware or devices.
Tip: Allow retail store visitors and shoppers to access an interactive map, a wayfinding solution, slipped into your retail brand's mobile application, that can help them look up and navigate to their favourite product category areas (For example: electronics, grocery) as soon as they enter the store.
5- Gamification
You may have the best of the best product category offerings displayed across the store but are your store visitors able to navigate to the aisles that they might have not noticed, or come across?
Gamification, another best proximity marketing practice, is allowing large retailers including supermarkets and department stores to allow a fun and immersive shopping experience to drive shopper engagement, sales order value and loyalty rates for their retail stores.
Tip: Offer treasure-hunt-style game capabilities within the retail mobile proximity marketing application. This way, you can strategically encourage visitors to visit aisles that they may have not engaged with. Reward with points or virtual currencies upon completion.
For example, mobile app users can be tasked with locating and scanning QR codes available near certain product displays or solving riddles related to product offerings.
Ending note
Embrace these five best proximity marketing ideas for your customer-centric and visitor-centric businesses to enhance customer experiences, drive sales, foster loyalty and stay ahead in an increasingly competitive landscape.

House of the Dragon tourism is contributing to traffic problems in a village in Wales.
A village on Anglesey used to film the House of the Dragon series has seen “road rage” incidents between tourists trying to get to a popular beach, according to residents. Ynys Llanddwyn and the nearby beach have been made even more famous by TV programmes, including the Game of Thrones spinoff, who have used the area as a filming location. But to get there visitors have to drive through the village of Newborough, often causing large and complicated traffic jams. [ ... ] The only road to the beach starts in the centre of Newborough, but it is narrow in places. Parked cars also mean traffic can only pass in one direction at a time. But with thousands of cars a week heading to the beach in high summer, people in Newborough say the road regularly can’t cope.
Maybe Newborough (Niwbwrch in Welsh) might consider obtaining a couple of electric buses to transport tourists from the outskirts of the community to the areas along the beach seen in House of the Dragon. Fares collected for the rides would pay for the cost of the buses.
Newborough/Niwbwrch is an interesting place in its own right.
Llinos Medi, leader of Anglesey council, added: “Newborough is a village steeped in Welsh history. “The local community faces a number of challenges during the summer months, in particular, with visitor numbers increasing significantly."

Some men see things as they are and ask "Why … change?" : 2003 : Neil Stock, Ofcom
A colleague would arrive at my workplace some Mondays with evident cuts and bruises. A tragic case of domestic violence? No. He was a loyal fan of Millwall Football Club, a team characterised by its “historic association with football hooliganism” (Wikipedia). Did I overhear anyone comment that it might be considered inappropriate to work in a government quango when resembling the runner-up from five rounds with Mick McManus? No. Colleagues alleged that this young buck was untouchable because he held finance qualifications that his boss lacked, despite their requirement to legally sign off public accounts. That same boss was then promoted to personnel director, despite having demonstrated to me a similar skills deficit, and then to deputy chief executive of our organisation. Ho hum.
Relevant qualifications and experience appeared to be non-essential for appointment to the management class at The Radio Authority. If you possessed ‘the right stuff’, prior employment in a Norfolk chicken processing factory could prove appropriate for a job regulating Britain’s commercial radio industry. One woman in my small crowded office talked incessantly, inserting expletives into every other sentence. Did any colleague suggest this to be inappropriate behaviour, particularly when some of us were interrogating radio station managers by phone and recording our conversations? No. Once, an interviewee enquired if I was calling from home, having overheard swearing in our office. Er, no, I just work in a madhouse.
Arriving daily to cross the threshold of our office, I felt like one of those unsuspecting visitors knocking on the front door of ‘The Munsters’ home, only to be invited into a scary otherworld that was bafflingly grotesque. Why did I choose to stay there? Because it was the only job I had been offered after countless rejected applications during months of unemployment. And I knew that my private hell would end soon. In several months’ time, the government would be merging several small regulators, including ours, into one new huge one to which staff would be transferred en masse. Well, with the exception of our only two visible minority colleagues, one of whom was dumped in the new regulator’s basement call centre, the other who was told she would have to apply for advertised vacancies despite her lengthy loyal service to our organisation. Which decisionmaker in our midst did we suspect of having never torn up their dogeared ‘NF’ membership card?
In order to prepare us for employment in a modern state-of-the-art regulator, The Radio Authority’s workforce was sent to a government conference centre to watch our new leader, Stephen Carter, talk us through PowerPoint presentations promising us a bright new future. I left these events finally feeling ‘hope’, though some colleagues seemed to sense ‘tyranny’, preferring the security blanket of a dysfunctional abusive ‘family’ already tainted by a corruption scandal exposed on national television. Preferring paperwork to floppy discs, I suspect nobody in The Radio Authority had even needed to press the ‘PowerPoint’ function on their archaic desktop computers. Why should they bother?
Though I had never witnessed our department required to function as any kind of team, we were all sent on a ‘teambuilding’ awayday organised by one of those faceless global management consultancies. We were told to pull together to solve theoretical problems, to play childish games and express our feelings in ‘breakout’ groups. I was paired with a colleague from my office who admitted her early career objective was to work on ‘BBC Radio Four’s ‘Women’s Hour’ programme, though she had never sought training in radio production. My own ‘learning experience’ from that session was something I had observed before – our privately educated elite expect to succeed in their chosen shiny career without needing to put in any graft as practitioners.
I lacked acting abilities, having always volunteered to organise the sound for school plays, but at our awayday I was picked to roleplay a radio licence hopeful whose latest application had been refused, in dialogue with the officer who had turned me down. Having endured enough of that day’s preposterous exercises, I threw myself into this role, choosing to feign a nasal Northern accent and imitate a persistent applicant from Stoke who felt the Radio Authority was discriminating against him. My colleagues laughed loudly at my desperate attempts to win the argument against my posh counterpart. In fact, my performance was art imitating life. I had heard work colleagues often lampoon the speech of a licence applicant from Stoke, despite his experience in radio broadcasting. Naturally, my play-acting did not dent their snobbishness one iota.
I had not understood how convincing my role had been that day until, during The Radio Authority chairman’s monthly walkabouts round our office, he would greet me using the ‘Wayne’ name of the Stoke persona I had adopted … and neither was he being ironic or witty. I had been renamed. I corrected him each month, but he insisted on addressing me on the next occasion as ‘Wayne’. Though he transferred to the new regulator, the majority of our senior management either were not offered jobs there or decided to accept redundancy, I know not which. Given that some had never used a work computer, preferring to order underlings do the grunt work for them, it was difficult to imagine them integrating within a modern office environment.
Everyone in our department received an email requesting our thoughts on how the radio licence application process could be improved. It had been sent by our team deputy Neil Stock, who had surprisingly been promoted by somebody somewhere to lead the radio division within the new regulator a few months hence. I had lots of ‘thoughts’ on the subject so started banging them out on my desktop computer. I was 875 words into my spiel before suddenly halting, asking myself what the hell I was doing providing free insights from hard-bitten experience. Earlier in my working life, I had spent months writing a radio licence application. Stock had never. That application had won up against 39 competitors. I had started working in commercial radio two decades ago. Stock had never. I had launched a London commercial radio station that had attracted a million listeners per week within its first six months. Stock had never. Might he not be harvesting ideas from his ‘team’ to convince his new paymasters that he possessed some kind of grand plan?
This suspicion was confirmed when, not having initially responded to his request, Stock reminded me repeatedly that he still required my contribution. He knew I considered the present application system deficient in almost every aspect because I had told him as much in previous conversations. However, I had nothing to gain from assisting his meteoric rise through the regulatory ranks without commercial radio experience. As is evident from the raw stream of consciousness I wrote then and reproduce (uncorrected) here, my verdict on my employer’s licensing system was damning as a result of having watched it contribute to an increasingly disastrous commercial radio sector in Britain. But criticising The Radio Authority meant criticising my new boss, so I never replied.
Months later, we had moved to the modern office environment of Ofcom. At last, it felt as if I was living in the present century. However, I sat at my desk day after day doing nothing, sidelined by Stock. Eventually he invited me to join his sub-committee tasked with updating the paper licence application form, which seemed like continued attrition to divine my insights. We met a couple of times, during which I retained my counsel about the disastrous system, since it was evident that Stock contemplated only minor amendments rather than a full-blown overhaul. At the end of our final meeting, Stock concluded our discussions by announcing that the application form would remain exactly as it already was, with only the old logo on the front page to be replaced by ‘Ofcom’. I was still working in a madhouse!
One day, everyone in the radio section received an email from Stock requiring their presence at a team meeting, a novelty as no such meetings had occurred at The Radio Authority. We all filed into the glass-walled room in the middle of our floor, waiting to be addressed. I wrote a header in my notebook and expected to jot some bullet points, but what followed left me open-mouthed and unable to note a single word. The sole topic of discussion was these former Radio Authority employees’ refusal to update their working methods to support Ofcom’s modernisation plan. Everyone in the room who spoke supported this strategy. I said nothing as my jaw had already hit the ground. My colleagues were a rabble of anti-revolutionaries. They wanted nothing to change. They were working in Ofcom’s office, drawing salaries from Ofcom, using Ofcom’s resources to hold this meeting … but they wanted to pretend they were still working at The Radio Authority. It was bizarre!
I was reminded of the ‘Luddites’ I had studied for economic history: textile workers in Nottingham who, between 1811 and 1817, had opposed factory owners replacing their labour with machinery. The government had sent 12,000 troops to quell their destruction of new equipment and violence against mill owners, after passing ‘The Frame Breaking Act’ that had made “machine breaking” a capital crime. Two centuries later, I was in the midst of a middle-class penpusher uprising where their disobedience was probably limited to not clearing their desks of papers before sneaking out to catch an early train home. Instead of armed troops, the most violent official response might be a polite e-mail etiquette reminder.
I returned to my desk in a state of disbelief. I must have attended hundreds of meetings during my working life, but that was the first where the consensus was to refuse to adapt to twenty-first century working methods. It felt like ‘Back to The Flintstones’. They would have been happier NOT to have computer terminals on their desks and a fast internet connection. I seemed to be in a minority of one, surrounded in our open-plan office by a couple of dozen paid-up members of the ‘Popular Front for the Liberation of Radio Regulation Reactionaries’. I was half-expecting a singsong of ‘Power to The People’ during our afternoon tea break.
I was SO disappointed. I had endured a miserable eighteen months’ employment at The Radio Authority, during which I had been shouted at repeatedly, told not to talk about ‘radio’, denied my yearend bonus and had failed my annual review on every criterion. Despite my successful track record in radio, I had been treated like a troublesome child. The only thing that had kept me arriving daily for work in Holborn was the hope that the situation at the merged regulator would prove different. Yet, within weeks of Ofcom’s launch, I was witnessing the same crazy behaviours that my colleagues had carried across the Thames with them to recreate their own private Transylvania. Like Harker, I needed to escape the clutches of these vampires if I were to retain my sanity. Could I tie together enough bedsheets?

RESEARCH BLOG 1:
When confronted with the project brief for the first time, I couldn’t help but think of the infamous Sphere in Las Vegas. It’s a massive dome that hosts all kinds of events and creates a truly immersive experience.

While we don’t have quite the same budget for our little project, it goes to show the power of technology and spectacle to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
RESEARCH BLOG 2:
For inspiration prior to the actual beginning of the project, I made my way to London over the weekend to visit some immersive experiences and to get some time away from campus. As our programme leader recommended stopping by the Outernet London experience, that was first on the list.

After exploring the city for a few hours, I decided to pop into a theatre to watch Poor Things, which had some really stunning cloud effects. The shift and shimmer of them during the film feel similar to an Aurora Borealis, if it were somewhat made of pollution. Maybe we can work this effect into our project somehow?

In the activities of our group this week, particularly in making creative decisions for our project, the type of creativity that we experienced aligns with Harnad's concept of "Preparation." Our creative process involved careful preparation, where we thoroughly researched, gathered resources, and analyzed existing elements relevant to our project. As Harnad describes, creative outcomes often emerge as novel recombinations of existing elements, necessitating their availability through thorough preparation.
We recognized the importance of mastering what was already known in our domain, whether it was techniques, aesthetic principles, or thematic elements. By building a strong foundation of knowledge and understanding, we aimed to extend the framework from within, allowing us to push the boundaries of creativity while remaining grounded in the existing context.
I looked deeper into immersive art and found the following examples:
Horizon of Khufu
Ancient Egypt's wonders are brought to life, with visitors journeying back 4,500 years to the Great Pyramid of Giza. Developed by Excurio and Egyptologist Peter Der Manuelian, the tech utilizes archaeological and historical data. During the 45-minute expedition, 'travellers' explore ancient civilization with virtual guide Mona. They ascend the 146-meter-high pyramid, witness mummification ceremonies, and navigate the Nile. The immersive experience offers extraordinary 360-degree views.

The Arctic Refuge Experience.
Exiting the first chamber, you enter a room with seven large video projections and mirrors. Mist fills the space, and ambient music plays as scenes of polar bears and snowy fields appear on screens. The atmosphere shifts abruptly to newsreels about oil drilling, followed by a call to action. Visitors are then led to a room where they can leave voice recordings for Big Oil CEOs. This installation aims to recreate memories of the Arctic Refuge using fragmented moments, requiring over 100 hours of raw footage and dry ice.

Delving into Creative Preparation
In our recent collaborative endeavors within our creative group, the theme of preparation has been paramount. Drawing from Harnad's notion of creative preparation, we engaged in meticulous research, resource gathering, and analysis to fuel the creative process. Harnad emphasizes that novel creativity often arises from a thorough understanding and recombination of existing elements, underscoring the significance of preparation in creative pursuits.
Our focus on mastering existing knowledge within our domain allowed us to innovate while staying rooted in established frameworks. This approach provided a solid foundation from which we could explore new horizons of creativity, leveraging the wealth of available resources to push boundaries and generate novel outcomes.
Exploring immersive art further, I discovered several captivating examples that exemplify the fusion of technology, art, and storytelling:
"Rain Room" by Random International: Rain Room is an interactive art installation that simulates a perpetually raining environment. Developed by Random International, this installation features a downpour of water that ceases to fall wherever individuals walk, thanks to motion sensors. Visitors can navigate through the rain without getting wet, creating a mesmerizing and immersive experience that blurs the boundaries between art and reality.
"TeamLab Borderless" by teamLab: TeamLab Borderless is a digital art museum in Tokyo, Japan, renowned for its boundary-defying artworks. Spanning across various themed zones, this museum features interactive digital projections that respond to visitors' movements, creating an ever-changing and immersive environment. PM At Ram Temple Inauguration Today, History At Ayodhya
The consecration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, a 50-year-project of the BJP and long awaited by many, will take place today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will fly to Ayodhya to participate in the ceremony, which will be telecast live.
Tumblr media
Here are the top 10 updates on this big story The consecration ceremony will be celebrated across the country and Indians abroad with special prayers and various programmes at local temples. The occasion has been hailed as a Diwali -- the festivities that marked Lord Ram's homecoming after the battle with Ravan and temples and houses have been strung with festive lighting. PM Modi has been observing a series of strict 11-day religious rituals to prepare for the consecration ceremony at noon. He will also address the gathering on the occasion, read a statement from his office.
"The historic Pran Pratishtha ceremony will be attended by representatives of all major spiritual and religious sects of the country. People from all walks of life including representatives of various tribal communities will also attend the ceremony," read the statement.
PM Modi will interact with labourers who have been building the Ram temple. He would also visit Kuber Tila, where the ancient temple of Lord Shiv has been restored, and offer prayers. The 380x250 feet temple is being built in the traditional north-Indian Nagara style. Its 392 pillars, 44 doors and walls have elaborate carvings of gods and goddesses. The idol of five-year-old Lord Ram has been placed at the sanctum sanctorum. The Kuber Tila stands at the southwestern part of the complex. Near the temple is a well (Sita koop), believed to be dating back to the ancient era.
Various leaders of the BJP and its ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh have already been camping out at Ayodhya, which has prepared to receive over 11,000 visitors. Over the last weeks, the sleepy temple town has had an international airport and a renovated railway station. Hotels, guest houses and homestays have mushroomed, bursting it at the seams and bringing in the long awaited economic boom.
The opening of the Ram temple -- which has been at the heart of a decades-long political storm -- has been cold-shouldered by most Opposition parties including the Congress, Left, Trinamool Congress and the Samajwadi Party, which accused the BJP of gaining political mileage from religion on an election year. The BJP has hit back, censuring all who declined the invite, including the Congress's Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Calling the parties anti-Hindu, the BJP has declared that they will get their punishment from the people at the hustings.
The event has also drawn other controversies -- including the one that involves the Shankaracharyes of four premier monasteries staying away. The Puri and Joshimath Shankaracharyas have said consecration of an incomplete temple cannot be held. They have also questioned why PM Modi will be inside the sanctum sanctorum when the Shankaracharyas have been allotted seats outside. The event, they have alleged, is being given a political angle.
The building of the temple started after the Supreme Court, in a landmark judgment of 2019, awarded the disputed land for a temple and asked that Muslims be given an alternate plot for a mosque. The matter, which went to court shortly after Independence, had escalated after hundreds of Karsevaks razed a 16th Century mosque on the site, believing it was built over a temple marking the birthplace of Lord Ram.

Young leaders also took advantage of the visit to express their vision and ideas for transforming Enugu into a green and climate-resilient city in keeping with the city's reputation as a clean, ambient, and family-friendly metropolis. The young leaders were accompanied in the visit by the honourable commissioner for environment in Enugu State, Prof. Sam Ugwu. The SSG, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, was very delighted to meet with the young leaders, stating that the present government in Enugu State, under the leadership of His Excellency Barrister Ndubuisi Mbah, is taking the issue of climate change seriously. The evidence can be seen in the modification of the state Ministry of Environment to accommodate climate change and the appointment of some senior officials in the climate change sphere to ensure success and sustainability. The SSG also informed the young leaders of a proposed trust fund for climate-related activities, which will benefit the young leaders once implementation commences. The target is to plant about 10,000 trees around the Awhum axis in the Udi local government area of the state as a pilot. The team presented the two artworks to the SSG on behalf of Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke. The presentation was done by Ogechi Nwonye, Basil Ojengwa, and Elochukwu Anieze. The SSG appreciated the young leaders and promised to ensure that the members of the team were carried along when the implementation of the trust fund is flagged off. The Hon.
