Chapter Four: Bixlow
Lucy was walking briskly towards her work. She hummed as she walked, occasionally glancing around. It had been a few weeks since she was attacked by Kit and met Cana. She hadn't seen Kit since the attack and she was beginning to think that she didn't need to keep an eye out every time she left her home. Nevertheless, she continued to take her keys with her everywhere. After all, Kit did say that she was hired by Lucy's father to bring her back to the Heartfilia Estate, so Lucy doubted that the green-haired woman would stop. Although, the question was, why was Kit waiting so long to attack again? Surely she would try again. Lucy softly touched her cheek, the cut has already healed without even a scar.
The possibility of being attacked by Kit again wasn't the only thing she had been thinking about since that night. For some reason, Lucy was unable to stop thinking about Cana. Whenever she wasn't doing anything or doing menial tasks at the cafe her mind would always turn to the brunette mage from Fairy Tail. It was driving her crazy. Every time she caught herself, she would blush and try to think about anything else.
The blonde would often imagine meeting Cana again and spending time with her. She would feel a fluttering feeling in her stomach and her face would burn with a deep blush, especially when she caught herself. She had never felt this way about someone. Was she in love? What was this feeling? She was confused but didn't have anybody to talk to about it.
Of course, she had found herself being attracted to men and women that she saw in magazines and read about in books, but the way she felt about Cana was different in a way that she couldn't even hope to explain. Several times in the past few weeks she had thought about summoning Aquarius and talking to her, but was never able to go through with it.
Lucy was so deep in thought about Cana that she hadn't seen the small, wooden totem on the ground in front of her. She let out a yelp as she tripped over something on the ground. She landed on her front, her chin hitting the stone ground and her arms splayed out in front of her in a failed attempt to catch herself. She laid there for a few moments, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
She soon pulled herself up to sit on her knees, rubbing the spot directly under her chin as she groaned at the pain. She pulled her hand away and looked at it, relieved that she didn't seem to be bleeding. She would probably have a bruise, though. Minnie had freaked out when she saw the cut that was on Lucy's cheek and wouldn't let her get to work until she explained what had happened. Lucy had managed to come up with a believable lie, saying that she had gotten the minor injury when she was training with one of her spirits. She didn't like lying to Minnie, but she also didn't want to worry the kind older woman. She didn't want to see how Minnie would react if she had a cut on her face again.
Lucy looked around her on the ground, searching for the wretched object that made her trip. Her brown eyes zeroed in on what resembled a small, wooden drum. She picked it up as she stood and turned it around in her hands, examining it. It was painted yellow and what she assumed were supposed to be small, dark brown, wooden wings on each side. The wooden totem thing had a wide, open-mouthed grin colored red painted on it and two black dots for eyes. She stared at it, wondering how it got here and where it could come from.
Suddenly, she heard a deep, slightly raspy voice say behind her, "oh, hey, you found Pappa."
Bixlow was angry at Evergreen, very angry. The two of them had decided to take a job in Crocus together because they were bored and had nothing else to do. Laxus wasn't in the mood for a job and Freed was too busy trying to find more books about some rare magic that had struck his interest. Apparently, he had only managed to find five books that focused on this rare magic. Bixlow wasn't interested enough to inquire what the rare magic was. He instead told Evergreen that it would just be the two of them and that he should grab an easy request. Evergreen had chosen a job request that was asking for at least two mages to escort some rich girl to a fancy party, then act as bodyguards for her until she was ready to leave, and finally, escort her back home.
Neither Fairy Tail mage was particularly interested in playing escorts and bodyguards, but it provided them with something to do. The reward was also quite good, five-hundred-thousand jewel. Evergreen had insisted that they travel to Crocus a few days before they were supposed to begin their job because she wanted to shop, much to Bixlow's dismay. He eventually gave in, deciding that he could find something to do, it is Crocus after all.
What he wasn't planning to do was get dragged around by Evergreen to every clothing store in Crocus just so he could carry her bags for her. This led to an argument that ended with Evergreen grabbing one of his "babies" and flying off with it. Bixlow had followed the fairy mage until eventually losing her when he ran into a crowd. He was finally able to find her at the hotel, but she didn't have Pappa with her. When questioned about where his small wooden totem was, the woman had said with her arms crossed and nose turned up into the air haughtily, "I dropped it."
"Where?" Bixlow had asked through clenched teeth.
Evergreen looked up at him, her brow furrowed and eyes slightly narrowed as a show of her annoyance. "Somewhere around a bunch of apartments and restaurants."
Bixlow had quickly decided that he didn't want to spend most of the day fighting with her, especially since one of his babies was laying on the ground somewhere and could be picked up by a little kid or passerby. He cussed at his partner under his breath as he ran out of the hotel to look around for Pappa.
He had been looking for much of the morning when he heard a yelp from across the street. He looked to see a young woman, a blonde, holding what looked like his missing totem. He crossed the street and walked closer to the blonde. He stopped when a was a few feet from her and leaned forward slightly to look at what she was examining in her hands. Sure enough, it was his baby."
Bixlow grinned and spoke in a voice that was louder than he meant to use, "oh, hey, you found Pappa."
The blonde jumped in surprise and whirled around to look at him. Bixlow froze when he saw her.
She was gorgeous.
Her blonde hair that reached just below her shoulders seemed to glow in the sunlight as if every strand had been woven from the sun itself. Her brown eyes, an enchanting sight that he could stare at for hours, had quickly gone from displaying surprise and slight fear to curiosity, possibly at both what he had just said and his attire. Her cheeks were flushed ever so slightly in a way that made her look even more lovely. Her forest green sheath dress hugged her curvaceous body beautifully. Around her hips was a brown belt with several keys on a key ring hanging from it, leading the seith mage to suspect that she was a mage too. His babies had taken refuge behind his back in response to his frozen state.
He was so transfixed on her beauty that he hadn't heard her calling to him until the young woman waved the small, wooden totem she holding in his face, asking, "Is this yours?"
Bixlow mentally slapped himself. He took a few moments to bring himself back to reality before answering, "y-yep! That's my baby!" He silently cursed at himself for stuttering and hoped that his voice hadn't actually sounded as strained as he thought it did.
The blonde chuckled before saying, "here" and handing it to him. Bixlow accepted his baby back. He rested it upright in his hand and watched the blonde's facial expression change to one of childlike amazement and wonder as she watched the small totem begin to rise in the air and fly around once more. The other four babies quickly joined their brother. Lucy laughed at them in amusement, extending one hand to Puppu and allowing it to land for a few moments before it began flying around the pair again.
Bixlow watched with a serene smile on his face. The blonde looked so pretty when she smiled that he didn't want to look away. The woman then looked up at him, asking in amused confusion, "did you call that totem your baby?" She pointed at Pappa, which had taken to resting almost affectionately on top of her head. The five totems repeated the word "baby."
The seith mage nodded, answering, "yeah, that's what I call these little guys, my babies. It's pretty weird, I know." The words "weird" and "know" were repeated.
The blonde shook her head. "I don't think it's weird. I actually think it's cute."
Bixlow looked at her, amazed that she hadn't scoffed and said that him calling his small totems his "babies" was weird or strange like so many people had done before. Was this the woman of his dreams? The fact that his heart's beating was picking up speed and the slight heat on his cheeks seemed to say so.
The blonde raised an eyebrow, asking with a small chuckle, "what? Why are you looking at me like that?"
Bixlow hesitated, suddenly unable to think of anything witty to say like he usually did. "Um...w-what do you mean?"
The blonde chuckled again. "You're looking at me like you're surprised."
The man continued to stare at her in that way. How was she able to tell? Only the bottom part of his face was visible. "How can you tell?" His question came out sounding unsure, much to his dismay.
The blonde answered with a sweet smile, "just because half of your face is covered doesn't mean I can't read your expression."
Bixlow was at a loss of words. He stared down at her, surprised that this young woman was so unlike many people he had met that thought him calling his totems his "babies" was weird, his choice of clothing was strange and off-putting, and his personality tended to be a bit too much. However, this young woman, who seemed to be a few years younger than him, thought that it was cute that he called his totems his "babies" and was having no difficulty talking to him, in fact, she seemed to be enjoying talking to him. He wanted to spend more time with her.
The blonde's question caught his attention, "what's your name?"
"Bixlow. What's yours?" He answered, guessing that her name was as pretty as her. His babies repeated his name.
"I'm Lucy."
Yep, he guessed right and he decided to tell her what he thought, "you have a very pretty name."
Lucy blushed at the compliment and looked away as she smile, causing Bixlow to smile at how beautiful she was, especially with a pink ting on her cheeks. She responded, still blushing and looking away, "thanks. I like your name too."
The two stood in a strangely comfortable silence, which was quickly broken when Bixlow caught sight of something gleaming on Lucy's belt. He looked down at her hip to see the several keys, colored gold and silver, that he had noticed earlier. He pointed at the keys and asked, "what are those?" The babies echoed the word "those."
Lucy looked down and then smiled up at him. "I'm a Celestial Spirit Mage. These keys are how I summon my celestial spirits. They are magical beings that can perform all sorts of tasks."
Bixlow noticed the way her eyes gleamed when he asked about her keys, making him believe that she cared about these celestial spirits of hers very much. "You really like your spirits, huh?"
Lucy nodded enthusiastically, answering with a large smile, "I love my spirits with all my heart. They are my friends." She then asked him, "what's your magic?"
"I can seal souls in objects that I am able to manipulate as I please. My babies can perform various tasks and attacks. I also have a type of Eye Magic called "Figure Eyes." I can take control of the souls of any person that makes eye contact with me and so, control their bodies as if they were dolls. Once I am done controlling them, I can release them from my control." After his answer, he gave her his signature grin with his tongue sticking out. Once again, his babies repeated after him.
Lucy nodded with a smile before she laughed at his strange way of grinning, obviously finding it amusing. She then said, "that's very interesting."
Bixlow could feel another blush creeping onto his face. His heartbeat picked up speed once again. He thought about asking her out but wasn't sure if she would be interested. Nevertheless, he decided that it wouldn't hurt to ask. In the worst-case scenario, he would gain a friend with whom he could spend an entire day talking to without getting annoyed. In the best-case scenario, he would gain a girlfriend.
Just as he was about to ask her out, Lucy gasped with her hand on one of her silver keys that was glowing slightly. Bixlow gave her a confused and worried look. Lucy looked up at him, panicked. She said hastily, "I'm so sorry, Bixlow! I'm late for work! I need to go! Bye!"
Bixlow watched as she ran off in the direction she had previously been walking. He was about to call after her to at least ask her if she wanted to hang out later, but she was too far away by the time his brain had caught up enough to react. He frowned. After he saw her retreating figure disappear, he turned around and began his walk back to his hotel, his babies flying around him with what seemed like glee.
As he walked, he began to think about Lucy. He thought about the conversation he had with her and how a date with her would probably go. He thought about waking up in the morning to see her beautiful face next to him. He thought about kissing her plump, lovely lips. These thoughts brought a soft smile to his lips. He eventually reached the hotel and walked into the room he was sharing with Evergreen, still smiling to himself as he continued to daydream about the blonde he had just met. He passed by Evergreen, who was sitting on her bed, and sat in the chair at the table that sat against the wall. He rested his elbow on the table with his chin resting in his palm.
Evergreen's giggling brought him out of his daydream. He turned to her, asking, "what?"
The brunette gave him a knowing smile. She turned back to her magazine before saying smugly, "you met someone."
Bixlow blushed before he grimaced, knowing that his partner would ask him continuously to tell her who it was that he met. He also knew that she would tell Laxus and Freed about this development once they returned to the guild.
He knew that he would not find peace from his friends for a while.
Lucy rushed into the cafe she worked at, stopping immediately when she saw that there was nobody inside. She grabbed her black apron and walked into the cafe as she tied it around her waist. She called, "Minnie?"
An aged voice answered from the kitchen, "ah, Lucy! I hope you didn't run into any trouble." The older woman walked out of the kitchen with a tray of freshly baked cookies. She placed the tray on the counter behind her and asked, "what's their name, dear?"
Lucy approached her, walking around the counter, and asked in confusion, "what?"
Minnie gave her an amused smile. "Oh, Honey, I know that look on your face. You just met someone, that's why you were late."
Lucy's blush that was calming down had renewed. She looked away. "I-I don't know what you mean."
Minnie chuckled. "I won't push it, but just know that if you need anybody to talk to, then I'm right here." Lucy looked at her and smiled, grateful to have found such a kind woman to work for. The older woman then said, "could you put these cookies in the case, please?" Lucy nodded and happily did as she was asked while Minnie walked back into the kitchen. Her thoughts turned to Bixlow. She quickly caught herself, blushing yet again at having thought about someone she had just met in a romantic way.
First Cana, and now Bixlow. What was going on with her? Why was she feeling this way about a man and a woman? Maybe she would take Minnie up on her offer of a talk.
