The Lateran Palace in Rome is an ancient palace from the Roman Empire and later became the primary papal residence in Rome for about a thousand years, beginning in the 4th century. In the piazza in front of the palace stands the tallest obelisk in Rome, which was taken from a temple in Egypt and eventually brought to Rome in 357 A.D per Constantius II orders to decorate the Circus Maximus. It was later moved to stand in front of the Lateran Palace after being restored. Now known as the Lateran Obelisk, it was also known as the Obelisk of Thutmosis III, because he commissioned it. The obelisk stands at 150 ft high from the base and is the largest obelisk in Italy as well as the largest standing ancient Egyptian obelisk in the world. The palace and the obelisk are stunning, and a must-see in Rome because of their historical significance.
The whole front of the Lateran Palace was the “Hall of the Council”, which is an enormous hall where the various Lateran Councils were held, which we learned about in our course, particularly the fourth one. The 4th Lateran Council in 1215 was called to address doctrinal issues, clerical abuses, the formation of new monastic orders, and to affirm the 7 sacraments. The reason the palace fell from its original glory was due to the popes leaving Rome during the Avignon papacy. It is called the Avignon papacy because in 1309 AD one of the Kings of France decided he wanted to pope closer to him. The pope at the time, Clement V, agreed to move to Avignon, France because he wanted the favor of the king. The popes after him lived and worked in Avignon, until the current pope agreed with the church leaders it was causing problems and in 1378 AD moved back to Rome. This led to the Great Western Schism because half of the countries were allied with the pope they elected in Avignon, and the other half of them were allied with the newly elected pope in Rome. The Schism got worse, and there was a time were there were even three popes at one time, until 1414 AD when a king stepped in and called a council to elect only one pope, but the Avignon papacy had damaged the church’s reputation and influence by that time.
I enjoyed learning about this historical place, and what surprised me about the Lateran Palace is all of the many things that happened here. It has undergone reconstruction and remodeling several times. It not only used to be a palace of the Roman Empire and then the papal residency for Rome, but was also a one time a hospice for orphans, a museum of overflow of religious art and culture from the Vatican galleries in the 19th century, and during World War II a safe haven for Jews and other refuges. Today it is the office of the Vicariate of Rome and the living quarters of the Cardinal Vicar General for the Diocese, and the papal apartments that tourists can visit.

A wee taster of something I've been working on recently - another rough from the Canso de la Crozada. I don't normally make my roughs this detailed, because a lot of decisions are made, and things changed, during the cutting of the final image, but this client wanted just rough samples to show prospective publishers, so these are taking a little longer than my usual scribbles! . #illustration #cansodelacrozada #albigensiancrusade #catharcrusade #frenchhistory #popeinnocentiii #fourthlaterancouncil #lateranpalace #ukillustrators #aoi #aoimember #ukprintmakers #linocut #linoprint #blockprinting #printmaking #reliefprinting #historyillustration
