McCollough, benefactor and UA alumna, opened her inau­gural Fine Arts Initiative with a reception and awards ceremony on Fri­day, October 6, 2023, in the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center in Tuscaloosa. Artist and Professor Jim Neel Keynote Speaker

Jim Neel (MFA 1973), an acclaimed artist and war photographer, with five decades of teaching experience, was the McCollough Fine Arts Initiative keynote speaker. Here is an excerpt from his speech:

"My life as an artist has been informed and enriched by this place and its people and its program My University of Alabama graduate art education is an immutable part of my continuing evolution as artist and citizen. The debt I owe, I try to pay forward to the younger gener­ations of artists that I teach. They are the rainbow-hued ones that will take up where we left off and challenge newer generations of creatives. The next Renaissance is theirs. It will be in good hands."

“Can’t Fight The Disco” by Joey Parker

Acrylic, Glitter, and an Iridescent Piece of a Party Hat on 20” x30” Canvas Board

The base of the painting was a simple project I could work on while my primary focus was schoolwork, it took me most of the Fall 2022 semester just to do that. Then I got stumped on what to do on top of it, knowing I wanted to use the old, iridescent party hat I had been flattening in hopes of using for a project, but not sure how to until January.

The title comes and concept comes from the Royal Republic song of the same name, but the style of the hand partly blending in with the background is largely inspired by Genesis’ album art for Invisible Touch. 

This is my piece that isn't wholly abstract, but I had a lot of fun using new materials to make the realistic objects in the painting stand out from the abstract background!

A Landscape Swept by the Wind by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A Landscape Swept by the Wind While water has carved out so many shapes Seemingly desolate with its erosion It is called a badlands But I only see one wonder and good Explored in solitude but shared with a friend Words can be described And images imagined But is definitely best seen with the eyes Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one morning while walking and exploring the Bisti Badlands in the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area. The setting is looking to the southwest to a nearby sandstone rock formations with a backdrop of blue skies and clouds. My thought on composing this image was to center the sandstone formation to my front, while keeping a balance between the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image with what I felt was a color contrast in the skies above.
