Okay, my novela-loving heart is overflowing because in this new year, not only are the Roku channels showing El Manantial (the first novela I ever watched) and Rubi (featuring my fave Miguel Pizarro as Loreto, Teh Ghey with the matching chihuahua), but tonight I discovered they’re also showing Abismo de pasión, which has my two major faves Riccardo Dalmacci AND Rene Casados—omg my ovaries! I am BEYOND stoked! 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃

I’ve discovered all the vintage novela channels on Roku and they’re fabulous, of course—some, like La Usurpadora, I’ve heard about but have never gotten to see until now, while they’ve got classic shows like Maria la del Barrio that I will happily watch over and over again.
The one I’ve really gotten into, though, is Triunfo de Amor, entirely because the King of Awesomeness Miguel Pizarro is in it. At first I thought, oh noes, he was so great as Loreto in Rubi that now he’s gotten typecast as a swishy designer! (Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Gawd knows we need more swishy designers on tv.) But now that I’ve seen more of the show and observed the subtleties in his performance, I can see that despite being another outsized character, Sr. Pipino Pichoni is definitely not another Loreto…though I gotta admit, I *do* miss the matching chihuahua, negl. 😉

DKDA, Sueños de Juventud - Entrada
Having recently discovered that I've got something like 1500 channels on my Roku tv, I'm still in the process of finding stuff I really like--the MST3K channel was an immediate fave, of course, and I'm keen on the all-Chinese-action-movies and the Korean+kpop channels--but something else I really love is the assortment of old novelas. Right now I'm watching some that I've only seen parts of before, like Salome and Teresa, and some I've already seen in their entirety, like the sumptuous Alborada. Seeing Jan in that production made me think of the huge crush I had on him in DKDA, which is why I had to post this.

When first watching Abismo de Pasión, my instant nickname for Blanca Guerra's character Alphonsina was, "Bitchface McGee," and throughout the course of the show, she has continued to live up to that soubriquet. Check out all the aggro coming off her! The bitchface, it is strong with this one. But in any case, I looove some of the jewelry featured on this show, and this black necklace is maybe my favorite thus far. Now that I'm starting to get back into making jewelry again, seeing pieces like this, along with the hella inspirational chokers frequently worn by Sabine Moussier, has really galvanized my creative impulse. It's also been really fun to watch bad girl Florencia (Altair Jarabo) slowly turning into a sympathetic character as well. It's one way that Abismo de Pasión significantly differs from El Manantial (which it still reminds me of a helluva lot--secrets from the past haunt a small town & the primary couple, who consist of a tragically-orphaned heroine & rich hero whose mother is a fire-breathing virago), since on that novela the evil blonde antagonist eventually goes mad instead of redeeming herself. I always prefer happy endings, myself. :)
