Dog Signal Episode 9 Review - How to Train Your Singe
First off, I want to apologize. In my review of the first episode of Dog Signal, I said that Singe is a mini poodle. He’s not; he’s actually a Toy Poodle. So, I’ll be using Toy Poodle when talking about Singe’s breed going forth.
Tumblr media
If Miyu wants to become a dog trainer, the first thing he really needs to do is to train his own dog, Singe. Singe has been in the back burner for far too long. It’s been six episodes since he last got focus. I know that focusing on other dogs is to help Miyu grow as a dog trainer, but it would’ve been best for him to get to know his dog first before learning about other dogs. Well, better late than never, I guess.
Singe is very rambunctious and mischievous. I’m not sure if all toy poodles are like this as puppies; I wouldn’t know because I adopted my two mini poodles when they were already adult dogs. However, the tsundere aspect of Singe is something I see in one of my dogs. She acts cold and tends to bark a lot towards others but is super loving and doting towards me. So, yes, poodles can be tsunderes. However, I do like that Singe is behaving like an actual dog and not a personified version of a dog. It’s hard work to raise one.
Though, I do think that the problem with Singe’s behavior lies with Miyu. Miyu is very hasty and impatient, which is why he’s trying out different methods to get Singe to learn commands quickly. All he needs is to realize that he needs to take time to bond with Singe in order for him to become obedient. I do like that Miyu isn’t shown to be perfect most of the time. He’s still new to the world of dogs and has his strengths and weaknesses; his impatience and over confidence are said weaknesses. For strengths, Miyu’s strongest quality is that he’s very observant when it comes to people and dogs. However, watching him trying to command Singe was hilarious and a bit sad. Miyu really does want to get along with Singe, but his dog is a tsundere. I think the hilarious part is when Miyu starts speaking cutely to Singe after it listened to him for the first time. Fortunately, his talent for observation helps in that he understands how Singe behaves. All Miyu needs is to calm down and be patient; once he learns how to do that, he and Singe will be the best of friends.
Niwa is surprisingly a lot nicer in this episode compared to past episodes. While he still calls Miyu an idiot every now and then, he’s not as harsh as he was in past episodes. He dishes out all the informative dog knowledge and then actually praises Miyu for knowing how commands work. I do wonder how much longer it will take for him to be genuinely nice to Miyu.
It was nice seeing the other dogs from the past episodes; though, Ricochet and Mrs. Miyake don’t make an appearance here. I even learned something new! Apparently, Eguchi’s dog Leo always lays down with its hind feet sticking out; that pose is called the female dog pose, apparently. I never noticed it until it was brought up, but my female poodle Angel always lays down like that. Niwa explains that dogs lay down in a position it feels most comfortable with. That’s true because both of my dogs lay down differently, but I left them alone like that because I assumed it was what made them comfortable; I’m glad dog whisperer Niwa agrees with me.
I do hope that after this episode, Singe gets less mischievous later on. It’ll be annoying if there’s another episode dedicated to teaching him how to sit again. Regardless, I learned a lot; this episode feels more informative than before and I enjoyed it. I’m excited for next week’s episode. What are your thoughts on this episode?

19th Century Japanese kozuka
A kozuka is a handle of a by-knife that is part of a sword mounting. It is kept in a slot on the reverse of a katana scabbard, often with a matching kōgai (hairdressing tool).

"The red of setting sun", Akira x Shoutarou SS
“I feel like time has stopped. Like I’ll always be here with you, never ageing.”
“......”
“So I don’t mind if this sunset continues forever.”
“I wouldn’t mind it either. It’d be nice if the time has really stopped.”
Tumblr media
Railway crossings with the lowered gates, the backs of tired people, the persimmon trees in someone’s garden were all passing by the train window, basking in the orange light.
I was looking at it standing by the door. Autumn was slowly taking its toll; it made me feel strangely relieved, and I let out a quiet sigh.

Akira-kun was standing right next to the Soshigaya station ticket gate.
His hair was even more ruffled than usual, and he was wearing round glasses, which didn’t suit him at all.
According to his words, all influential mangakas had glasses, so he felt more motivated when wearing them.
This all meant that he had a deadline coming.
Of course, these glasses were fake and didn’t have lenses in them.
He pulled his hands out of the haramaki and opened them towards me.
“Welcome back, Shou-chan~!”
…But why did he sound like he was on the verge of tears?
When I slowly approached him, he hugged me tightly and started patting my head and shoulders.
“What’s gotten into you?”
“I came to pick you up!”
“Aren’t you busy drawing your manga?”
“I was so worried about you, I couldn’t do anything else…”
“You’re too anxious. Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Nothing to be scared about.”
“That’s good to hear.”
But even when Akira-kun finished checking if I was okay, he still looked upset.
If I smile at him, he'll smile back.
With a forced and bitter smile, as radiant as the setting sun.
“Let’s go home together.”
We walked at a distance too small for friends, too big for lovers, but just enough for a family.

Actually, the world has been coloured by the sunset for two days already.
For some reason, the night hadn’t come after the evening yesterday, and, of course, without the night, the morning didn’t come either.
The hands of the clocks struck 12 or 7, but the landscape remained just as it was at sunset.

When I say ‘world’, I mean just the small place where I live. But for everyone else, it only happened in the Setagaya district.
“Can we stop by the greengrocer shop?”
“Sure. What d’you wanna buy?”
“I thought that yesterday’s curry would taste better with eggplants.”
“Shou-chan, you’re a genius.”
I didn’t understand why the sun wasn’t setting or why we were led to think so.
Strange events like this happened quite often and usually resolved by themselves without any explanation.
And that’s why people on the streets seemed to continue living by the clock with the usual expressions on their faces.
It was half past seven.
Hearing the trumpet of the ramen shop made me feel strange.
As if I were dozing off, and everything surrounding me has been a dream.
“I heard that nights when the sun doesn’t set are called white nights. Seems like they happen often near the South Pole.”
We bought a big autumn eggplant and were heading home when I started telling Akira-kun what I learnt today.
“They said so on the radio in the cafeteria where I went for lunch.”
“Nah, no way we’re gettin’ those in Tokyo.”
He hunched over more than usual, his chin dropped, and walked a bit uncomfortably.
He was the only one in the town who seemed to be nervous.
“It’s too creepy that the sun’s not goin’ down…”
“If you leave Setagaya and go to Shinjuku or Machida, the sky will go back to normal. And when you return to Setagaya, it’ll be sunset again.”
“It makes no sense, really~...”
“What if we’re seeing a rare natural occurrence now?”
“No way it’s natural…”
Not holding any worries like Akira-kun, I blinked slowly, looking at the strange sunset.
He became even more anxious, seeing how low my sense of danger was.
“Well, at least it’s not that troublesome that the night doesn’t come. You can just wrap yourself in the futon when sleeping, and the sun won’t bother you. And it feels good to wake up when it’s bright outside.”
“You’re too quick to adapt…”
“Do you really hate it that much?”
“‘Course I do… Night’s good because it’s night; mornin’s good because it’s mornin’.”
“And what’s good about the night?”
“At this season, the bell crickets are creaking. And the moon looks pretty. Yesterday, we couldn’t see it at all because of this sunset.”
“...”
“Sunset’s also good, but I don’t wanna miss other beautiful things ‘cause of it.”
“You sound just like a writer today.”
“Mangakas are writers too, y’know?! Our sensitivity is what sells our works!”
After that, Akira-kun scowled at the sunset.
But I still couldn’t see it as anything but dazzling and beautiful.
“Akira-kun, do you ever feel suffocated when looking at the setting sun? Sometimes I get scared by it. …But not today.”
“?”
“I finally understood why my chest hurts so much at sunset. The sinking sun and the day ending turn into loneliness, sorrow, and sentimentality, and it makes me feel miserable.”
But now I’m calm.
The never-ending sunset made me feel safe.
“I feel like time has stopped. Like I’ll always be here with you, never ageing.”
“......”
“So I don’t mind if this sunset continues forever.”
“I wouldn’t mind it either. It’d be nice if the time has really stopped.”
“......”
“But it’s not like that, right? I still have my deadline tomorrow, and the trains still run on time.”
…He’s right.
I flipped the calendar, and the curry I ate in the morning tasted better than yesterday, having sat overnight.
“It’s boring to see the same scenery every day. I hope everything comes back to normal soon, so I can see different landscapes with you~”
“Akira-kun……”
“Even when the night comes and the morning comes after that, we’ll always be together. And, ‘course, even when we become old geezers.”
Akira-kun held my right hand.
His hand was hot after being warmed in the haramaki.
And his smile was soft—not bitter at all.
I thought that his vermilion-coloured cheeks were way more beautiful than the sunset.
Suddenly, the feeling of anxiety overcame me, and I dropped my head.
“...Usually things like this end quickly. Why does this one go on for two days already?”
“Well, maybe the guy who usually deals with all this got into some trouble?”
“That would be bad…”
“Or maybe they’re daydreaming like you just now.
“......”
“But they better come to their senses soon and do something about it!”
He raised his eyebrows and showed me a thin and comical smile, fitting for someone playing a supporting role.
I couldn’t help but smile in return.
“How’s your audition today?”
“Horrible.”
“Thought so. So I bought you a ‘get-better-pudding’.”
“I’m glad. Genuinely.”
“And if it went well, it would be a ‘celebration pudding’.”
“How convenient.”
“I also got a 'request pudding’... Can you help me put on solid colours when we get home…?”
“I’d do that even without the pudding.”
When we got closer to our house, the sun suddenly went down.
First Venus twinkled in the sky, then the bell crickets started creaking.
Curry was even better than in the morning; just as I thought, the sweetness of the roasted eggplant made the taste stand out.
Nothing happened—nothing at all. Just another day went down as usual.

Please, tell me if there are any mistakes or places that sound weird

Tumblr media
this is the hand akira used to win against the policemen right? ill explain the hand he obtained here
his hand consists on four concealed triplets (concealed as in closed hand, he didnt steal the dragons or the other triplet to open his hand) and one pair. the cards of his triplets and pair are, from left to right:
red dragon
white dragon
green dragon
1 of man (chinese numbers)
1 of sou (bamboo)
having three dragon triplets in hand + winning with himself getting the last tile he needed, the 1 of sou (its the last shining card in the right) leads way to this naming of his entire hand
suuankou tanki (four concealed triplets with single pair wait)
daisangen (big three dragons)
triple yakuman
tsumo (as he won by grabbing himself the last tile needed)
if one yakuman means 32000 points if nabbing one person only AND 48000 points if its against all people, triple yakuman against all players means winning 48000 points from every other person with a total of getting 144000 points, possibly meaning complete and absolute victory as when you play you start with only 25000 points when in friendly matches
hands like this are extremely rare given the difficulty of getting them three dragons AND getting them via luck of the draw, but Akira has been shown to be blessed by mahjong gods enough for sex jokes

Dog Signal Episode 5 Review - Separation Anxiety
I think this anime is super, super, SUPER underrated. It’s sad that I feel like I’m the only one reviewing it. There are cute dogs, cute boys, pretty girls, vibrant colors and educational lessons. What’s not to love about this anime? I guess I’m a bit energetic today because I’m such a big dog lover and seeing stories about people with their dogs always gets me happy.
Tumblr media
That’s what this episode is—it’s one that made me happy. I think that having life lessons with both humans and dogs and seeing them overcome them warms my ever frozen heart. Sure, it could just be written in a way that befits a slice-of-life story, but I still enjoy it! In the case of Kozuka and Coco, both owner and dog overcame their own separation anxiety. Just seeing them progress moved me.
I was glad that Niwa pointed out that Kozuka had her own issue with separation anxiety as well. I really like the parallelism that both Coco and Kozuka have with each other. Since  Kozuka has gotten divorced recently, living on her own with Coco is just as a new experience as Coco living in a new house with one less parent. Both are stressed and clingy towards each other. While Coco does have the capability to adapt to separation, it is ultimately her mom that is interfering with her adjustment, confusing the dog and compelling her to have bad habits because of that.
I’m happy that Miyu is involving himself more with being an assistant from being Niwa’s secretary of sorts to helping Kozuka practice leaving Coco behind at home. Although he has his own dog in Singe, learning more about dogs and their behaviors and facing them head on together with Niwa and the owners is excellent experience. I’m glad that Miyu is sort of the “good cop” to Niwa’s “bad cop” as he’s the one who is more in charge of socializing with humans as Niwa cares more about the dogs’ wellbeing. I also like that Miyu is canonically attractive as his looks has worked twice with the first being Kanon who was instantly charmed by him at first sight in the previous episode while Kozuka melted over his smile, comparing it to an idol’s; there’s also that one questionable line from Episode 3 where Dr. Kubo playfully accused Niwa of hiring Miyu because he looked like a puppy and he denied that his hair wasn’t the factor. I mean, Miyu is pretty cute. He has curly hair, round eyes, always smiling, has a kind demeanor and great fashion sense.
Niwa is still rough around the edges when it comes to people, but he knows how to do his job well. While he was a bit of a jerk in the beginning where he told Kozuka to leave when her indecisiveness annoyed him, but he still preserved (mainly thanks to Miyu). I’m glad that he’s very blunt and speaks his mind. He flat out tells her that she pities Coco and that is why she cannot bring herself to separate herself from her dog. Regardless, he’s still a great dog trainer. I like that his method of training is effective and that’s the reason why clientele come. I really like seeing him smile as Coco’s behavior started changing. The fruit of hard work is such a satisfying feeling, after all. I also really want his No Dog No Life shirt. I think the advice he gives out is super educational and it’s helping me learn a lot.
The fact that this anime is underrated yet still manages to get amazing voice actors to voice side characters is insane. Last week’s episode had Megumi Toyoguchi as Mrs. Miyake and this week has Ami Koshimizu as Kozuka is crazy. It’s been a while since I last heard Koshimizu use her softer voice to voice a character. I usually hear her as tomboys or mature women with seductive voices lately. I really do love her soft voice!
I like that continuity persists. In the beginning, Mrs. Miyake and Eguchi are seen at the training center and Dr. Kubo drops by too! I’m glad that the dog owners still come to Niwa for training and not call it quits afterwards. Training is a long process, after all. I do like that Singe growls at Dr. Kubo because of the neutering incident. Dogs don’t like people who did something bad to them. In Singe’s case, Dr. Kubo took out his balls, so he doesn’t like him.
Given the title of the next episode says “Niwa’s teacher,” I assume that man from before was Niwa’s dog training teacher? Are they related by blood or no? I can’t wait for next week! If you’re watching this show and you’ve seen this episode, what are your thoughts?
