Koreshan State Park Field Trip 

My name is Michele Santorsola, I am an entrepreneurship major here at FGCU and am here to provide the public with information regarding Koreshan State Park. The park was originally a settlement established in 1893 by one Dr. Cypress R. Teed. They believed that the secret to immortality was celibacy and that the universe was contained within the Earth. 

Dr. Cypress R. Teed garnered many of his  followers from urbanite families in Chicago. Due to persecution for their unorthodox beliefs, the Koreshans while looking for land in Pine Island were able to acquire 7,500 acres through the homestead act. Above is the art hall. Here, the Koreshans were able to enjoy the sophistications of urban life in the then rural SWFL. They had items as decadent as a grand piano shipped by horse to maintain a piece of their old lives. 

Above is the Koreshan general store and was one  of the few  connections the outside world had with the Koreshans. Originally it was built on the Estero River, however after a flood, it was constructed in 1920 by US 41 to take advantage of the traffic. Though the Koreshans believed in self-sufficiency and producing their own goods, they needed capital to survive. Fruits and preservatives such as oranges, pineapples, melons, coconuts, strawberries, and tomatoes were grown and sold by the Unity.

Marine Studies Field Trip #5

This field trip was done virtually by viewing various website articles and videos on specifically Fort Myers Beach, Estero Island, and Matanzas Pass.

The following will be a mixture of my thoughts, answering some provided questions, as well as supplemented pictures to help understand the topic being discussed.

What is an estuary?

An estuary is a partially enclosed, coastal water body where freshwater from rivers and streams mixes with salt water from the ocean.

Why are estuaries important for both the natural world and for humans?

They act like buffers, protecting lands from crashing waves and storms.

They help prevent soil erosion.

They soak up excess flood water and tidal surges.

They are important feeding and/or nursery habitat for commercially and ecologically important fish and invertebrates, and migrating birds.

Estuaries have an important commercial value. Their resources provide tourism, fisheries and recreational activities to have a greater economic benefit.

The protected coastal waters of estuaries also support public infrastructure such as harbors and ports which are a vital part of shipping and transportation.

Fun Fact about how estuaries can protect people and not just the animals that live in the immediate ecosystem:

*Estuaries can filter out sediments and pollutants from rivers and streams before they flow into the ocean. As water runs off the land, plants such as marsh vegetation and seagrasses absorb and filter out pollution. This provides cleaner water for humans and marine life.

Barrier Islands

Barrier islands are constantly shifting and migrating in response to storm events and the impacts from wave action. As a result, they accrete and erode sometimes overnight.

This dynamic nature of barrier islands causes difficulties for development. Waterside structures can be lost in a single weather event such as a hurricane, like we just went through, or be subject to beach accretion or erosion.

Hurricane Ian absolutely destroyed Fort Myers, including the barrier islands. These lands held the first infrastructures to make impact with the storm surges. This land is so fragile, so vulnerable, and what happened is very sad.

Therefore, building on the beach or any part of a barrier island is risky. But people are drawn to this idyllic location which often results in highly developed beaches.

Estero Island

Mid-19th century settlers to Estero Island began as a result of the Homestead Act of 1862. During the late 19th century, members of the Koreshans, a group of people living in a utopian commune near Estero, purchased land on Estero Island.

Some lived on the island, and a saw mill was also established on the island by the Koreshans. Few people lived on the island in those early settlement days, but the 20th century brought the land boom of the 1920s. Developments on the island were just getting underway when hurricanes in 1921 and 1926 stalled the development plans. The Great Depression pushed back further development of the island.

Although, fishermen were living on the island and thriving in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. During the 1950s, there was a renewed interest in the island as a vacation getaway destination. Tourism and commercial fishing have both been major players in the history of the island.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish!

The fishing industry has a deep history on Estero Island. During the 18th century, Spanish fishermen from Cuba fished these waters and sent dried and smoked fish back to Havana where local fishing banks had been “fished out.” Local fishermen have been plying the waters ever since.

By the 1930s and 40s, commercial fishermen were the local year-round residents of the island. Later, the discovery of shrimp (“pink gold”) in the area brought more fishermen to the area to exploit this newly found resource. While commercial fishing has historically been the cornerstone of the Estero Island economy, tourism (including recreational fishing) has since become the mainstay of the local economy.

*Final Fun Fact*

The boardwalk at Matanzas Pass is a great example of using recycled materials in construction. The boardwalk material is made up of plastic bottles and caps! How about that for sustainability?!

The 'hollow earth theory', a staple of archaic science fiction, suggests that worlds beyond our comprehension, filled with strange and mystical sights, exist inside the hollow centre of the planet. Such ideas are clearly nonsense, but they led to some interesting historical anecdotes.

The idea of a hollow earth in the Jules Verne sense, with humans living on the outside surface, is unsupported by the laws of physics - literally, as a hollow structure the size of a planet would instantly collapse under the force of gravity. But in the late eighteenth century a refinement of the theory was suggested by an eccentric American, Cyrus Teed, who postulated that humans lived on the inside surface of a hollow spherical space containing the entirety of the known universe. Such a model, where light travels in curves towards the centre of the space, would be experimentally indistinguishable from the convex model (assuming all physical laws were adjusted to act opposite to the normal fashion). The idea of the 'inside-out universe' became popular as a thought experiment, and was widely written about in the twentieth century; it seemed to gain particular credence in Germany, and it is known that Hitler was familiar with the concept. Unsubstantiated stories have emerged of Nazi expeditions sent to spy on the British fleet by pointing infrared cameras at the sky...

The concave hollow earth hypothesis never received any real support. As Martin Gardner says (in the book 'On the Wild Side', 1992), it can be discounted via the principle of Occam's Razor - the simplest solution to a problem being the most likely to be true. Its original proponent, Cyrus Teed, attempted to turn the radical idea into a religion - Koreshanity - after shocking himself with electricity during an experiment, having a vision that he was humanity's messiah. His supporters became quite numerous at the turn of the last century, but their sect is now extinct. Teed himself died in 1908, from the complications of a fight between Fort Myers men and his followers. He was buried on the Southern end of Estero Island, but shortly afterwards a hurricane washed his coffin out to sea.
