1951 richtete der WDR das Labor für elektronische Klangforschung ein, das erste seiner Art weltweit.

Im „Studio für elektronische Musik“ des WDR entstanden legendäre Werke der elektronischen Musik von Künstlern wie Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, John Cage. Heute lagern die Überbleibsel des Studios in Kölner Kellerräumen.
