followup: countertops
OK pictures under the cut but before you judge me, understand that i went into this remodel saying "i don't want everything white and gray!!!!" and then one at a time we considered our options and realized the best options were... whites... and grays...
but! the white countertop has SPARKLES in it, and as I tell the saga I will tell you the inside scoop the countertop installer gave me, as to WHAT THE SPARKLES ARE MADE OF.
i would put in a little video of the sparkle but i can't figure out how to upload videos anywhere so just imagine it. you can kind of see it in some of the still images.
Tumblr media
[image description: a young man in a gray hoodie and orange gloves rests my not-yet-installed stainless-steel sink on the top of the cabinets in front of my windows, which don't yet have countertops.] These guys rolled up at 8:15 and politely introduced themselves, Devin and Isaac. My buddy Max had already rolled in, but Jim had planned on arriving at 8:30 and was running late.
Devin said to me, excitedly, "Did they tell you? We did it seamless!" There had been discussion of whether the corner section would have to be fabricated in two sections or whether they'd be able to do it in one.
They asked Max about some technical details, but Max demurred, "Jim knows about it, I'm just here to help," and they said "ah we'll wait for Jim" but then they were like "well we can just get started" and as it happens they'd just about finished before Jim finally rolled up, LOL.
They installed the sink first, as it's an undermount and so way easier to do before the counter goes in.
But the counters-- they just-- set them down, checked the level, checked the measurements everywhere, and then just put silicone around the edges underneath and on top. That's literally it. I asked if it was ever more complicated and Devin was like ah yeah if we have to level it there's a whole thing, but. I mean. Jim did this so I knew it'd be this easy, that's why you're first for us today.
Tumblr media
[image description: an expanse of speckled white countertop, with reflections from the lights. You can kind of see a speck here and there of the sparkles. the color is somethingorother-snow, because it does glitter like snow.]
I admired the glitter, and Devin said, "Guess what the sparkle's made of!"
"Glass," I hazarded.
"Close," he said, "but no." When nobody else had another guess, he said, "CDs! It's made of CDs." This is a quartz-like-composite kinda thing, which means it kinda looks like stone and is shiny like stone (instead of matte like Corian etc) but won't shatter your plates quite like stone and is easier to maintain.
I texted this to the family groupchat, and VegMan said (my sister must have read it aloud to him, he's not on the family groupchat) "Oh, AOL CDs?" and I texted it to Dude separately and he wrote back "That's like 750000 free minutes of AOL!" and when I repeated these jokes to Devin, Isaac, and Max, they all kind of looked politely blank. "Oh no," I said, "you're too young."
"I was born in 2001," Devin volunteered, and Max laughed and said "same". (I do not think Isaac is any older.) "They used to give me video game CDs in my Happy Meals though so I know what you mean."
I've lived in this house since both of you were four years old, I thought, but did not say. "In 2001 I was..." "Adulting," Devin said helpfully. "You... could call it that," I said, thinking back to my senior year of college.
They brought in the little chunk of counter that's going over next to the fridge, and then the bigger chunk that's the sink counter. Then they brought in the big one they'd managed to do seamless, the L-shaped chunk that goes from the stove around the corner to the expanse in front of the bay window that will be our dining area. Devin and Isaac planned out where they'd go and how they'd get it in the door, because they knew it was heavy. Then they got in the door and Devin said "Max! Max I know I don't know you but I need you to help me!" and Max hustled over and grabbed the heavy end, because it really was too heavy for Devin, and Isaac had the other end so he couldn't help.
It was a strain for both of them, but they carefully got it up onto the cabinets, and slid it painstakingly into place, and Devin took a moment to recover.
Tumblr media
[image description: a person in a gray hoodie is sitting on the cardboard-covered floor of a white room with gray cabinets, applying silicone from a tube to the underside of the white countertop]
They checked the levels and measurements and made sure there were no gaps and then they just... glued it. Like not even really glued it they just applied a bead of silicone around all the edges, and that's that.
"Is it really that easy?" I asked, and Devin laughed and said "if it's not perfectly level we have to shim it, and there's a whole lot of complicated stuff we gotta do then, but the reason I put this job first is I know Jim put these cabinets in so I know they're level. And if they're level then yeah this is all that's gotta happen."
They look so good. They sparkle like snow. The room is a sea of neutrals.
Tumblr media
[image description: from my living room looking into my kitchen, with the stove pulled out awkwardly into the middle of the floor, one man is standing to work on the counter near the sink and another man is sitting on the floor checking the underside of the counter in front of the window.]
Jim showed up as they were finishing, checked on a few things, signed off on the job, and then he and Max set to tiling the backsplash. Which I will cover in a separate post because this is enough for right now. But.
The counters!!! I wish I could figure out how to make a gif out of a little video on my phone because the SPARKLE. Yeah the white countertops and white walls and white ceilings are a bit much but understand two of the walls and all of the window trim are getting painted some bright color or other, so it won't be like this forever.

Trendsetting Touch: Long Island's Contemporary Kitchen Cabinets
Tumblr media
In the realm of kitchen cabinets in Long Island, a wave of innovation is sweeping through the design landscape. Long gone are the days of mundane cabinetry that simply serves a functional purpose. Today, Long Island kitchen remodel projects are embracing contemporary styles that redefine the heart of the home.
Contemporary kitchen cabinets are not just storage units; they are statements of style and sophistication. Crafted with precision and finesse, these cabinets elevate the aesthetics of any kitchen space while offering unparalleled functionality.
The Essence of Contemporary Design
At the core of contemporary kitchen cabinet design lies the principle of minimalism. Clean lines, sleek surfaces, and geometric shapes are the hallmarks of this aesthetic. Unlike traditional cabinets, which may feature intricate detailing and ornate embellishments, contemporary cabinets exude a sense of simplicity and elegance.
Materials Matter
Long Island kitchen remodel enthusiasts are increasingly turning to innovative materials to bring their design visions to life. High-gloss finishes, acrylics, and glass are popular choices for contemporary cabinets, adding a touch of modernity to any kitchen.
Moreover, sustainability is a key consideration for many homeowners. Eco-friendly materials such as bamboo and reclaimed wood are gaining traction, offering both style and environmental responsibility.
Functionality Meets Style
In the realm of kitchen cabinets in Long Island, functionality is paramount. Contemporary cabinets are designed with the modern homeowner in mind, offering clever storage solutions and ergonomic features.
From hidden compartments and pull-out shelves to integrated lighting and smart technology, these cabinets are as practical as they are stylish. Every inch of space is maximized to ensure efficiency and convenience in the kitchen.
Tumblr media
Embracing Color and Texture
While neutral tones like white, gray, and black remain popular choices for contemporary cabinets, there's also a growing trend towards embracing color and texture. Bold hues such as navy blue, emerald, green, and even matte black are making waves in modern kitchen design.
Textures play a crucial role in adding depth and visual interest to contemporary cabinets. From brushed metal accents to textured wood grains, these subtle details elevate the overall look and feel of the kitchen.
Customization and Personalization
One of the defining features of contemporary kitchen cabinets is their versatility. Unlike traditional cabinets that come in standard sizes and configurations, contemporary cabinets can be customized to suit individual preferences and spatial requirements.
Whether you prefer open shelving for displaying curated collections or prefer sleek, handle-less designs for a seamless look, the options are endless. This level of customization allows homeowners to create a kitchen that truly reflects their unique sense of style and personality.
The Future of Kitchen Design
As Long Island kitchen remodel projects continue to evolve, it's clear that contemporary cabinets will remain at the forefront of design innovation. With their blend of style, functionality, and versatility, these cabinets are not just trends; they are timeless investments in the future of kitchen design.
In conclusion, kitchen cabinets in Long Island have undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, thanks to the rise of contemporary design. From sleek surfaces to innovative materials, these cabinets embody the essence of modern living. Whether you're embarking on a full-scale remodel or simply looking to update your kitchen, contemporary cabinets offer a trendsetting touch that is sure to impress.

the home stretch
Went over to the house yesterday morning and Jim was there sawing a hole in the exterior wall.
Not alarming at all once I remembered part of this remodel that i'm really excited about is that we're getting an actual exhaust hood for over the stove. Not one of those ones that goes through a microwave either, a real exhaust hood that goes to the outdoors. (The real ones are mounted 30" above the stove top. Microwave ones have to be lower so you can reach the microwave. i can't stand cooking in such a constrained space like that. No thank you. Keep my microwave separate!)
He had sawed out a big chunk of drywall on the interior too, and replaced it with plywood, which is much sturdier to screw mounting hardware into. At my request, he'd extended the plywood down a couple more inches (it'll be covered by the tile backsplash so it won't even show!) so I can screw a couple of heavy-duty mounting hooks in there and have a place I can hang both my cast-iron skillets when they're not in use. I don't like leaving them on the stove (my mother's approach) or stacking them on a shelf (dude's approach) because one is untidy and the other requires me to lift every piece of cast iron i own at once to access any of them. (I also have a square griddle and a Dutch oven and also a tiny skillet which Dude uses all the time when I'm not around and neither of us uses at all when I am around, because it is very much a Cooking For One mini skillet LOL.)
He paused to show me the deer hunting hut he'd meticulously constructed for himself while he was on Christmas break and then artistically had painted camoflage. ("My friends were like omg how long did that take you? I dunno, I wasn't counting, I had a blast. Had a beer in one hand, spray paint can in the other, I just let it take as long as it took. It's like arts and crafts! Who's keeping track of the time?") It did look great. As he was swiping his finger accidentally slid onto the later bits of the camera roll and it showed me the deer he'd gotten on the last day of hunting season. "Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you look at that," he said, and then looked at me and laughed, remembering I had told him I work in a slaughterhouse. "Right, you don't mind that kind of thing, but still." It was a nice big doe, cleanly felled, nothing to object to there.
I went and called the appliance company, who'd said they'd deliver my dishwasher and vent hood on new year's eve probably. They seemed confused that I'd called, and then were confused when they discovered that indeed both my items were in stock and should have been delivered. I said I figured the holiday had confused things (genuinely, probably the vent hood had come in on NYE like the salesman had thought it might, but I bet somebody had the day off and they weren't on the ball about calling people) so I just wanted to call and find out if anything needed sorting. They told me they'll call me today to tell me the two-hour delivery window. So I'm getting my dishwasher today! Pumped. It's gonna go into the living room to start with but like, y'know, that's fine.
The counters are going in on Thursday. Hopefully, Jim said, the counter people could do it in the morning, because then he could start on the tile that afternoon.
Ah they've just called, my delivery window for the appliances is 11-1. OK cool.
The plumber can't come until Monday. But then once he's been there I'll have my stove and sink and dishwasher. And, Jim says, that means the final, last little button-up details will be done on Tuesday.
"And then," he said, amused, "I can go back to the regular schedule, because the people who refused to have their houses torn up over the holidays will be clamoring to get the work done now. It's good you didn't mind." Which is precisely why we thought we'd gotten bumped up by two months, but it's funny to hear him so directly confirm it.
"I'm the luckiest person in the world," I said, "with my mother-in-law's house vacant walking distance away for this whole time, so it's been genuinely no trouble at all." And I am. She's coming back on Tuesday, so I figure we'll move back into our house over the weekend, and I'll deep-clean her house and (sighhh) put all the beautiful sewing equipment back where I found it. I won't really miss her fancy modern sewing machine (which she just got and is third-hand and I don't think she knows how to use either) but her old workhorse straight-stitch machine is a beautiful, unfussy beast I've really enjoyed spending time with.
OK i gotta get off my ass and go get the grocery shopping done so I can go sit in my house for the delivery window. I saved plenty of things to do, don't worry. I'm starting to put stuff into the cupboards, made Dude come sit with me over the weekend and give his opinion-- he's been busy at work and has had no attention span but I refuse to take his "idk just put stuff wherever" at face value, he spends more time in this house than me and i will NOT have him after the fact annoyed with how I chose to organize things. So he did give opinions, finally. And I need a few more lazy susans and storage baskets and half-shelf-rack kinda thingies here and there but I'm getting there.

A Comprehensive Guide to Preparing Your Las Vegas Home for a Kitchen Remodeling Project
Tumblr media
Embarking on kitchen remodeling in your Las Vegas home is an exciting endeavor that promises to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of one of the most important spaces in your house. However, before you dive headfirst into the renovation process, it’s essential, to adequately prepare your home to ensure a smooth and successful project. In this insider’s guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to prepare your Las Vegas home for a kitchen remodel, ensuring that every aspect is thoughtfully considered and executed.
Plan Your Budget and Design: Before you begin any physical preparations, it’s crucial to establish a realistic budget for your kitchen remodel. Consider factors such as materials, labor costs, permits, and contingencies to ensure you have a comprehensive understanding of the financial aspects of your project. Additionally, work with a reputable kitchen contractor like GI Construction to create a detailed design plan that aligns with your vision and budget.
Clear Out the Kitchen: Start by removing all items from your kitchen cabinets, drawers, and countertops. Store kitchen essentials in temporary storage containers to keep them organized and easily accessible during the remodeling process. Clearing out the space will not only make it easier for contractors to work but also protect your belongings from dust and damage.
Set Up a Temporary Kitchen: Since your kitchen will be out of commission during the remodel, it’s essential to set up a temporary kitchen in another area of your home. Designate a space for essentials such as a microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, and refrigerator to ensure you can still prepare meals and snacks while your kitchen is undergoing renovations.
Protect Flooring and Furniture: Cover your floors and nearby furniture with protective materials such as drop cloths or plastic sheeting to prevent damage from dust, debris, and heavy foot traffic. This step is especially crucial if you have hardwood, tile, or laminate flooring that you want to preserve during the remodel.
Secure Pets and Children: Remodeling projects can be noisy, chaotic, and potentially hazardous, especially for pets and young children. Make arrangements to keep your pets in a safe and comfortable area away from the construction zone, such as a gated room or outdoor space. Similarly, establish ground rules and safety protocols to ensure the well-being of children during the remodeling process.
Communicate with Your Contractor: Effective communication with your kitchen contractor is key to a successful remodeling project. Discuss important details such as project timelines, work schedules, and any specific preferences or concerns you may have. Maintain open lines of communication throughout the process to address any issues or changes promptly.
Prepare for Disruptions: Kitchen remodels can disrupt your daily routine and lifestyle, so it’s essential to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally for the temporary inconvenience. Be flexible and adaptable, and focus on the long-term benefits of the remodel rather than the short-term disruptions.
Consider Accessibility Needs: If you or a family member have specific accessibility needs, such as mobility challenges or dietary restrictions, take these into account when planning your kitchen remodel. Work with your contractor to incorporate features such as lower countertops, wheelchair ramps, or accessible storage solutions to ensure that your new kitchen is functional and inclusive for everyone.
Stay Organized and Flexible: Throughout the remodeling process, stay organized by keeping track of important documents, receipts, and communication with your contractor. Remain flexible and open to adjustments as the project progresses, as unexpected challenges or opportunities may arise that require adaptation to the original plan.
Trust the Experts: Finally, trust in the expertise and professionalism of your kitchen contractor, such as GI Construction. With their knowledge, experience, and dedication to quality craftsmanship, they will guide you through every step of the remodeling process and ensure that your vision for your Las Vegas home’s new kitchen becomes a reality.
Obtain Necessary Permits: Before commencing any construction work, it’s essential to obtain the necessary permits from the local authorities in Las Vegas. Your kitchen contractor, such as GI Construction, can assist you in navigating the permitting process and ensuring that all necessary approvals are obtained before work begins. This step is crucial to avoid any legal complications and ensure that your remodel complies with building codes and regulations.
Protect Valuables and Fragile Items: Before the start of construction, take the time to safeguard valuables and fragile items in your home. Remove any artwork, decorative pieces, or sentimental items from the kitchen and surrounding areas to prevent damage during the remodeling process. Consider storing these items in a secure location until the project is complete to ensure their safety.
Coordinate Delivery of Materials: If you’ve selected specific materials or fixtures for your kitchen remodel, coordinate their delivery with your contractor to ensure they arrive on time and are readily available when needed. This proactive approach helps prevent delays and keeps the project on schedule, allowing for a smoother and more efficient remodeling process.
Communicate Any Changes or Concerns: Throughout the kitchen remodel, maintain open lines of communication with your contractor and promptly communicate any changes or concerns that arise. Whether it’s a design alteration, unexpected budget adjustment, or scheduling conflict, addressing issues proactively helps minimize disruptions and ensures that the project stays on track.
Plan for Clean-Up and Post-Construction: As the kitchen remodeling project nears completion, discuss clean-up and post-construction activities with your contractor. Ensure that the work area is thoroughly cleaned and debris removed before final inspection. Additionally, inquire about any warranties or maintenance recommendations for newly installed fixtures or appliances to prolong their lifespan and preserve the integrity of your newly renovated kitchen.
Enjoy Your Newly Remodeled Kitchen: Once the construction dust has settled and the finishing touches are in place, take a moment to savor the fruits of your labor and enjoy your newly remodeled kitchen. Whether you’re cooking a gourmet meal, entertaining guests, or simply relaxing with your morning coffee, your revamped kitchen is sure to enhance your daily life and elevate your home living experience in Las Vegas.
From careful planning and preparation to skilled execution and attentive communication, every step of the kitchen remodeling process plays a crucial role in achieving the desired outcome. By following this insider’s guide and partnering with a reputable kitchen contractor like GI Construction, you can confidently navigate the complexities of a kitchen remodel and transform your Las Vegas home into a stunning culinary retreat that reflects your style and meets your functional needs.
