Parasite: The importance of Production Design as a narrative device

In December 2019, I was lucky to go to an early screening of Parasite ahead of its scheduled theatrical release. Another bonus is that Song Kang-Ho was there to present and introduce the film to us. The film was was as spectacular as everyone claimed it be since its premiere in Cannes earlier in the year. I’m also glad I saw it blind, not knowing anything about the film and only the trailer as a basis to hold onto. In 132 minutes, the film crossed multiple genres, fronted by stunning visuals; without missing a single beat, it tackled difficult societal topics within the narrative which is carried forward by a strong cast. It is truly one of those rare gems that deserves to be called as the “perfect film”, both in style and substance.

There is a lot to be praised and mentioned about this film. Its critical acclaim and awards comes to no surprise. However, what I find is most compelling about it all is the production design. In script as tight as Bong Jong Ho’s, from the characters movement and environment, it is something that has to be done right as the story is reliant on it. Bong and his art department details across multiple times interviews how much effort has been put into creating the world of Parasite - especially the Park house and Kim house. This includes: selecting the right patch of land to ensure the sun hits at the angle and the many levels of the house(s) that all have a particular set up (e.g. colour, texture etc).

As a narrative device, production design is just as important in this story. In fact, I find that it is equal to the strong performances from the cast. In many films, the actors and performance often outshine everything else; other factors such as production design are merely seen as aid. This is not the case for Parasite. The production design holds a particular weight to the story.

They physically manifest the story and metaphorically communicate the dynamics between characters. It allowed the class and hierarchy to materialised which is what the story is ultimately about; there are many layers in the film matched the levels of the houses and the landscapes they stood on. Here are some note worthy moments:

The way Kiwoo moves across the house and climbing up the stairs mirrors the drastic improvement in his life, simply due to his proximity and relationship with Dahye as a tutor.

The film begins and ends at the Kim’s semi-basement flat, illuminating the fact that social economic status is a difficult one to overcome, especially if you’re the poorest of the poor.

The small window at the top of the Kim’s semi-basement, which provides light into their flat, levels into main street - marking their “just above water” status as a family. Later on, this is further amplified by the flood caused by the heavy rain. As the Kim’s home and entire belongings drowns in murky water, the Parks see it as a blessing as nature has “watered” their garden grass for them.

Even the lowest of the Park’s house, the basement where the housekeeper and husband resides, is still better than the Kim’s semi-basement (as evidenced by the wifi signal reach). It shows where each of the character stand in the social hierarchy. The lowest of the Park house is still higher than the Kim’s in the economic ladder, again due to the proximity with the Parks.

I’ve always thought highly of production design in film as an effective narrative device and its always exciting to see films which allows it to be at the centre of the story. Especially beyond what is usually expected, like Wes Anderson’s famous sets. This is a lot much subdued but just as impactful. Objects and physical space can carry a lot of meaning. It has the ability to carry information, especially considering the material culture we live in. They can fill what cannot be said in words and perhaps elevate the meaning. By using the right elements, much like in Parasite, it can make the narrative much more compelling and offer more depth. In my personal practice, I hope I’m able to utilise space this effectively and I am keen to use space as a narrative device. Allowing the world I put my stories in play equal part in the telling as much as those who live in it.

The entertainment world is constantly changing to fit the public’s wishes and idol groups are no different. This month trainees will be arranged into groups and they will be swapping sunbae songs with trainees of another company. What does that mean? Trainees of different companies are covering each other’s sunbae artists! Each company is known for having their own style, so this month’s evaluation will focus on a change of concepts to serve as a test of versatility to see how each trainee will do outside of their typical style.

Not only that, but on the last day of the month, groups covering each other’s sunbae artists will gather in Seocho’s theaters and perform in front of coaches from both companies and the trainees whose sunbaes they will be covering. Make sure you meet the expectations of those who know the artists’ whose song you’ll be performing better than anyone! You will not only be evaluated on your performance skills, but also on your capability to express the concept of your given song.

For +2 SKILLS TO DISTRIBUTE AS YOU WISH, +2 DEBUT POINTS and +1 WK RELEVANT ACHIEVEMENT, write one 250+ word solo about your muse’s performance for the evaluation. For +2 SKILLS TO DISTRIBUTE AS YOU WISH and +2 DEBUT POINTS, write a four post thread with a member of your group about the preparations for your performance. For +2 CHARISMA and +1 DEBUT POINT, write a four post thread with someone from a group your trainee swapped songs with or a 250+ word solo about your character watching the other trainees cover your sunbaes.
