HIS PRETTY DOLL FACE — Scene Two

synopsis: there was a shy boy in your class that everyone around you adored because of his nice personality and pretty face. however, you've always found him strange. you thought that he was too good to be true. but when some weird things started happening around you, things started to change. and so-called nice boy Yang Jung-won made his way to be friends with you.

A tired sigh fell from your mouth. The cause behind your sigh was none other than your class president, Yang Jung-won. From Monday to the whole week, he wouldn't leave you alone and you were fed up with his teasing.

Jung-won's teasing was tolerable before, but since the arcade, it became much worse. Surprisingly, the arcade thing went nicely much to your liking. You two got a little closer because of that, but not that close because you still hated the boy's gut. The awkward tension between you two now has gone, Jung-won acted more freely around you, in other words, now he's annoying you all the time.

Due to that, you're here, on the school's roof, taking a rest from all the stressful things that caused you headaches.

Stepping closer to the roof's edge the wind gently blew your face, it's like all the worry now has gone.

You were relaxing until you heard the rustling sound behind your back. Looking back surprisingly, there stood a tall boy with a charming face. He was too, didn't expect another person to be here, looked a bit surprised. Nonetheless, his face expressed a smile.

He walked to you and took a spot beside you, his boyish smile still present on his face.

━"Are you going to skip classes?"

━"Tempted to do that, but sadly I can't. You?"

You nodded while answering his question and looked at him. Looking at him, he was quite tall, maybe around six feet? And he has these moles that complimented his face. You're not gonna lie the boy was an attractive one.

━"Yeah, I'm usually here most of the time. School sometimes too much for me to handle."

The boy beside you now was turned towards you and leaned down to meet your height. The gesture had offended you, nevertheless, you didn't express your offense.

━"By the way, I didn't catch your name, miss. I'm Ri-ki."

You shook his extended hand while introducing yourself. After that, the conversation went smoothly. Apparently, Ri-ki was an immigrant who came here when he was a child. Despite him saying he's an anti-social person, the boy was energetic and fun to be around.

As time passes, you two were so into your talking that you didn't even notice that the break was coming to an end. When the bell rang, you ended your conversation and bid goodbye to your new friend.

It seems coming out on the roof to relieve stress was a great idea.

There was a tiny joy for Jung-won that seeing you all being feisty whenever he was around. Furrowed eyebrows, narrow eyes, pouty lips, and snarky remarks. Indeed it was such a pleasure to see you like that. You were usually a quiet person, and because of that, he loved the extra attention that you gave to him.

He would literally brighten seeing you from afar. The way your figure walks like a penguin is so adorable vision to him. Although half of his year's girls crushed him, he has his eyes only set on you.

But now, even though he had seen you, he didn't like the view. You were standing with an unfamiliar tall boy in front of you. Some stranger that smiled at you so adoringly gave an uneasy feeling to him. As the seconds passed, Jung-won's face grew darker.

When he was just about to make his way towards you, you parted with the unknown boy. Your smile-adorned face didn't lighten his mood.

━"Who was that?"

You were quite startled at the sudden question.

━"What the hell, Jung-won? You scared me!"

In your response, his frown had deepened. Ignoring the surroundings, the pout on his lips became slightly visible.

━"Y/n, don't make me repeat."

Even though you hated to admit it, you found the boy's whiny voice endearing. It was cute, Yang Jung-won was cute.

Trying not to gather people's attention you told him about your new friend. A boy with such a captivating smile.

━"So his name is Ri-ki?"

━"He's from the other class. A few days ago we had a little chat on the roof. Ri-ki is a nice guy, there's nothing for you to be worried about."

With your said last sentence, Jung-won perked up at you. Earlier his little glare was now replaced by a look of surprise. Jung-won's duality always made you astonished. But when you think about it, with that insane duality, he fooled almost everybody in this school.

━"Recently you're being so overprotective to me, I could sense it from a mile, Jung-won."

━"Is that so?"

You snorted at his question. He would literally glare at all the guys that went near to you. There wasn't anything going between you two, but the way that Jung-won was acting, made you think otherwise.

In the cafeteria, at one table, four individuals sitting in painfully uncomfortable silence.

All you want was peaceful lunchtime. But not everything goes as planned, so here you are sitting between Jung-won and Ri-ki that glaring at each other. Across you, Su-noo with an amused grin, he sure was having fun looking at the three of you.

━"I was hoping for privacy with y/n."

Ri-ki broke the silence, following hiss escaping from Jung-won's mouth.

━"If you don't like having us here, go somewhere else dude. No one wants you here anyway."

With Jung-won's harsh saying, Ri-ki pouted at you. You sent him an apologetic look, furthermore don't know what to do.

Su-noo, who had been silently watching the bickering, finally spoke.

━"I too actually was wished for an alone lunchtime with y/n. But looking at it lately, our y/n-ie became such popular with boys. Even her dearest friend can't get a peaceful time with her."

Although a moment ago he was chuckling at the boys that fighting over your attention, now his face had turned into a serious one as he finished his sentence.

━"If you two just going to tire her out, I suggest you go to another person. I mean, there's plenty of people out there."

Now your friend was glaring sharply at the two people beside you.

━"And since she's nice, she probably won't tell you, so I'll tell you on her behalf. Know your place, y/n is not a person that you could just fool around with."

The silence afterward was deafening. While y/n shut her mouth, Jung-won just sat there with wide eyes. Ri-ki, on the other hand, has no facial expressions.

Su-noo usually wasn't like this, he was known as cheerful for his bubbly personality around his grade. So Jung-won naturally thought that the y/n's so beloved best friend would naturally give his blessing to him. However, the unwelcoming words that Su-noo spat had him caught off guard.

As you shoot your friend a knowing look, Su-noo just shrugged his shoulders and continued to converse with the two boys beside you as if nothing happened. Now the glare had already been replaced with his usual foxy smiling eyes. It's as if he wasn't looking dagger at them a while ago.

━"Now thinking about it, the next period is chemistry, right? Did you two done with your group assignment?"

Your best friend's question caught you off guard when you remembered the day that Han-sol had ditched you. Just thinking about it makes you internally groan.

━"Yeah, kind of a made it work all by myself, and besides..."

Now your inner vision has changed Han-sol into your chemistry teacher, you just wanted to bang yourself into the table.

Seeing you all frowny, made the boys confused. Then it seems Su-noo has figured out what was going on in your head, sighed, "No offense, but that old fart really needs to keep his hands to himself."

At Su-noo's response, Jung-won questioned what was going on between you two and the teacher Cha.

━"It's just that... teacher Cha is quite touchy."

Hearing your little voice, Jung-won furrowed his eyebrows. He had never heard of this before and he thought that everything is fine under his control what happens in the class, but apparently, he was wrong though.

━"Can't you just report him?"

In Ri-ki's question, a sigh came out of Su-noo's mouth, he explained that he tried but to his defeat, y/n didn't let him do it. Now Jung-won's glaring directed to y/n, he wanted some explanation from her.

━"Even if I report him, the school governors wouldn't do anything about it anyway, they love their reputation so much."

Jung-won's glare softened a little at your words, now his hands were gently caressing yours.

━"I will be sure to do something about it, okay?"

The boy on your left, Ri-ki also tries to lighten your mood a little bit, telling you some reassuring words with a little smile.

Now in your classroom, you looked at Jung-won confusingly as he seated himself beside you. Just when you were about to question his action, he shushed you.

━"From now on, this is my sit. If you have any problem with it, please put your complaint over there."

━"Jung-won, that's a trash bin."

You looking confused as you look at him and him proudly replying at your remark, "Exactly."

If it weren't for your science teacher entering the classroom, you would have protested about how Jung-won used his power to his advantage. You sighed as you looked at your teacher and handed out your assignment.

Later your class started as usual and went on peacefully, so you assumed that your creep teacher wouldn't pull any weird moves on you.

At the end of the class, before you were glad about nothing had happened, your teacher had called you, only you, in his room.

Just the thought of you being in his room all alone with him had creeped you out. The smile that used to make him look nice now sent a shiver down your spine. You couldn't form a response as he looked at you expectantly. The distress that going on in your head was indescribable.

The voice that sounded next to you had made you come back to reality. Hearing his voice, all of your anxiety is now gone. His soft voice has comforted you.

━"Teacher! If you don't mind, I want to go with y/n too. There's some formula that I wanted to ask you."

There was a swift change to your teacher's face when he heard Jung-won, he stared at him blankly for a moment as if thinking about how to decline his request, but nevertheless he allowed him to come.

Trying to not be noticed by others, a subtle sigh of relief escaped your mouth. Being thankful to the boy beside you, you sent him a small smile.

Jung-won returned your smile, one of his hands reassuringly grabbing yours while his other one pulled you closer to himself by your waist as he leads you out of the classroom.

A part of you is worried about what happens next, but on the other side, you were a little relieved that Jung-won is with you. Maybe you were feeling like this because you were scared, you didn't really know.

There was definitely a feeling of reassurance when you were with Jung-Won. When he smiled at you tenderly, grabbing your waist tightly like now, and when he whispered these teasingly yet sweet words to your ears. You hated to admit it, but you couldn't get enough of his gestures.

Everything felt sickeningly sweet to you until Jung-won stopped in his track. Much to your dismay, he retreated his hand that was on your waist. Wondering what happened, you looked ahead and saw Ri-ki standing in front of you conversing with Jung-won.

You couldn't hear what they were talking about so quietly, so when you were about to question their conversation, Jung-won had pushed you softly toward the taller boy. Before you ask what's going on Ri-ki slightly hugged you as he opened his mouth to speak, "Mind if I borrow some of your time, miss?"

Before you could answer, Jung-won opened his mouth, "I'll handle the teacher Cha. You can go ahead and spend some time with Ri-ki, okay doll?"

There was a slight disappointment that you were parting with Jung-won, but you didn't really want to meet your science teacher, so you nodded your head compliantly.

When you two parted with Jung-won, Ri-ki couldn't help but notice your little sadness. So him being a brat decided to tease you about it.

You try to ignore the boy's teasing as you try to keep a straight face, unfortunately, failing miserably.

━"You two didn't even let me speak! Tossing me like some kind of an object as you decided to what to do about me."

Only if Ri-ki knew that teasing you would make you annoyed instead of a blushing mess. He sighed as he didn't get the reaction he wanted from you.

━"Look y/n. We are sorry that we didn't consider your opinion, but the two of us wanted nothing but the best for you, so please," he gently grabbed your hand as he looks at you, "forgive us, hm?"

He being genuinely sincere with his words makes it impossible for you to not forgive him. So you sighed and to let him know that you forgave him, you held his hand back as you intervened your fingers with him.

Everything felt perfect to you.

Today you have welcomed this morning in a wonderfully good mood. Not to mention, everything seemed to work out in your favor. So that's why now you're walking happily to the school as you hum a song in your mouth.

As you descend the path where there is no one but you, you see a black cat staring at you. You couldn't help but felt alarmed as the black cat stares right at your face.

Didn't want to break your delightful mood from the morning, you decided not to think much and went in the direction you were going.

When you approached your classroom, you noticed that unfamiliar people were roaming around your class. Not knowing what's going on you decided to simply step in and ask Jung-won about it, after all he's the class president.

Just when you step into the classroom, one of your classmates points at you saying, "She's the girl that was called to the Cha teacher's room yesterday."

Confused at the girl's remark you looked at the person she was talking to. A middle-aged man with a piercing gaze. For some reason, the gaze had made you uncomfortable. Unconsciously, you stared at him and when Jung-won spoke you looked away.

━"Actually, me and her went together, but in the middle, something came up, so I went to his room alone."

The unknowing guy nodded at his word and finally spoke, "For now, you two both come out, we have questions for you two."

You still don't understand what's going on, but you decide to obey and leave the classroom. At the corner of your eye, you spotted your best friend looking at you concerned. Didn't want to make Su-noo worry about you, you smiled at him soothingly and left.

Came out in a school hallway, you followed the adults with Jung-won. You didn't know where you were going, so at least you wanted to know about the situation.

Looking at your puppy-like curious face, Jung-won got the sign and began to explain it to you with a low voice, almost like a whisper.

━"Teacher Cha was reported as missing this morning. According to these people, they can't contact him and teacher Cha is just gone like a stone thrown into the water."

━"So you mean, there's no other person than us that saw him last?"

━"Unfortunately, yes."

You groaned at Jung-won's answer. Everything was going well and suddenly this happened. You do feel bad for your teacher even though he's that kind of person, but you knew the thing that coming to you will be hectic as hell.

After all the interrogation that lasted a whole day, you let out a cry of exhaustion. You thought it wouldn't take long. Oh, how you were wrong.

Now you're munching at your food hungrily as the other three guys discuss what happened in the interrogation room.

━"That scum had a wife?!"

Su-noo exclaimed loudly while Ri-ki shoot him a dirty look.

━"I mean, I'm sorry for what happened to teacher Cha, but━" Then he lowered his voice as he stares at them blankly, "It must be karma though, he totally deserved it."

━"What he did is unforgivable, but I don't think this kind of thing should have happened to him," Jung-won tells as he sighs then, "Due to that we got involved in this mess without doing anything."

When the mood became dull Ri-ki clapped his hands trying to lighten, "Now now guys, don't be so pessimistic. I'm sure your teacher will be found soon. So you all be patient and wait."

Su-noo nodded his head agreeing "Ri-ki's right! Don't be gloomy you two! I'm certain he's somewhere too wasted to go back home."

You deadpanned at him, "Weren't you talking about some sort of karma just now."

Him mirroring your expression, "I'm still thinking he deserved it."

The other two are chuckling at your bickering as you two clown yourselves. The missing teacher was now long forgotten.

I looooove that we got the Ventrue overlap between our two coteries for NYbN, not just because of the endlessly juicy drama of Rafferty’s two childer and the tension of that soon-to-come meeting, but also because of the two different flavours of Ventrue that we’ve gotten to see with Fuego and Khalida.

I like to categorise Khalida as a Dominate Ventrue and Fuego as a Presence Ventrue, though this is not simply based on the mechanics alone as both of them make ample use of both disciplines. The Ventrue compulsion is arrogance, a desire for power and obedience, and more than most other clans new Ventrue are very often chosen for already displaying an aptitude for this desire. But how they go about achieving this is what differentiates them.

Khalida is a dominator. She has a specific vision of what she wants from the world, and she will (somewhat ruthlessly) shape the people around her in order to get it. She uses The Forgetful Mind and Mesmerize flippantly, rewriting the world in her vision. She is measured and calculated, arguably much more so than Fuego, but that does not stop her from using her abilities as she sees fit, even going so far as to Dominate Simone, a much older and more powerful kindred, into giving her what she wants, despite the danger. She even uses Presence the same way, as a cudgel to command those around her. She uses Awe on mortals the same way she uses Mesmerize, to have them do her bidding. I think this is deeply informative of who she was as a mortal, and why Rafferty chose her in the first place; you get the sense that she was equally as cutthroat as a highend art dealer, taking what she wanted whenever she wanted it regardless of the consequences, an endless ambition for power that made her shine to her future sire.

Fuego is a manipulator. Aabria described it best during ep 3 of Club Auspex, in that she has a soft command of power over those around her that she’s slowly learning to make use of. She isn’t a Queen on a throne making demands, she understands that (unlike Khalida) she doesn’t have guidance or actual political power in this world yet. And so she watches, looks for the soft, vulnerable parts of the people around her, and quietly molds them into what she wants them to be. We talk a lot about that delicious moment in episode 3 with Rey and the businessman, but look at it again: both in luring that man to the alleyway and in asking Rey to kill him, she doesn’t even use Presence or Dominate, she doesn’t need to. She already knows what buttons to push, what poisonously honeyed words to whisper in someone’s ear to get what she wants out of them. Even her use of Dominate reflects this. She doesn’t try to push beyond her means, force someone to kill themselves (I doubt she knows that wouldn’t work yet, but even if it did its just not her style), she just nudges them in the direction she wants. Sit. Stay still. Give me the gun. Its quiet and simple, and lethally effective.

Ironically I think the two of them would have a lot to learn from each other if daddy dearest doesn’t succeed at pinning them against one another. Simone is right that Khalida sometimes uses her disciplines as a crutch, one that might get her killed if she continues to wield it so openly against other kindred; she could stand to learn from Margot’s more subtle manipulation tactics. But outside of her disciplines, Fuego is a deeply impulsive individual, taking risks and making big in-the-moment emotional decisions because of her desires (killing the security guards, trying to dominate the skull, dancing with Riktor in front of Consuela, etc) that could seriously get her hurt or worse if she doesn’t learn. Khalida’s cool, cold, slightly detached and measured outlook could help Fuego’s survival chance quite a lot. But this is just speculation of what’s to come, and I’m deeply excited to see how it all transpires.
