Setting up my Iron Valley

So... I started reading the Rulebook, like, an hour ago (three hours ago when I finally started posting). Half debating with myself because I wanted to make a cute notebook with my step-by-step, remembering I don't have some comfortable notebooks at hand and that, if I have to write a lot, it won't be practical.

Then I wanted to draw the map, for reference! You know, to remember that to the north there are mountains, to the west and east are forests and to the south a beach followed by the beautiful ocean. I wanted to draw that. Then remembered I don't know how to draw, but wanted to do the bean trick for the map's edges and leave a great space in the middle for the valley.

But I didn't, because that's too much movement for the summer heat I'm scorching in, so I created a doc, copypasted the logo, and started with the real first step.

4. What piece of media inspired you the most?

in terms of what fandom got me barfing the most words out, it was for sure the quarry - no surprises there, hehehe - but in terms of what media got me pumped/excited/WANTING to create more, i have to shout out the "old gods of appalachia" podcast. i'm a little behind, i'm not totally caught up with the story as of this moment, but i swear, relistening to that podcast at the beginning of the year is 100% what got me so jazzed to write like wringing blood from a stone. no question.

(this is also me saying if you're out there and you've enjoyed like wringing blood, you might want to give old gods a shot, because mmmMMMMMM it's so good. and it's very much the sort of vibe i'm going for with my hackett stuff, lmfao)

7. What character(s) captured your heart?

if you told me when i first played the quarry that i'd have a favorite hackett brother, i would believe you. if you, however, immediately followed that first statement with "and it's chris," i would not. HOWEVER, as is so often the case with me, this year i found myself falling in love with another supermassive character that gets all of 5 lines and a combined 12 minutes of screentime. chris hackett, ily.

9. What fic meant the most to you to write?

surprising NO ONE, it's for sure like wringing blood from a stone. after finishing the (almost)s, i really didn't think i'd plunge back into longfic life, but i'm here, the water's fine, and this project has absolutely become my baby. there's a lot of, like, me put into the story, a lot of (extremely abstracted) personal stories and problems being retold, and it's been a place for me to sort of find my own kind of catharsis while telling what i hope is a compelling story of another family's struggles. it also means the world that it's gotten the readership it has despite being about, uh, a very angry family struggling against themselves and each other, so it's just...it's just the project i'm the most grateful for, absolutely.

15. Rec a fic you wrote or posted in 2023

in the woods somewhere is a fic i wrote about jess. i wish i could say more about it than that, but explaining it any deeper sort of gives some stuff away. it was one of those lightning-in-a-bottle ideas that came to me fully formed and ready to go, and i spent a whole day just furiously writing it down and, to be honest, crying more than just a little ;P we don't see much of jess in until dawn - her night is pretty complicated - so i just really wanted to explore her story a little more...and give her a way to get back home in one piece <3

26. If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?

i got back into my CREEPs fic!!! 🥳 it was gathering dust for SO long, but i was finally able to post a couple chapters, and though they're not ready to share just yet, i actually have the rest of the fic nearly complete. being able to get back into that WIP and sort of shake the rust off felt so, so good, and i'm REALLY hoping that energy will carry into 2024 and i'll be able to finish off a bunch of stuff i've left on the back burner!

How do you decide the name of a fic?

I have been writing for like quite a time now and honestly since I never share any of it with anyone, I have never bothered to look upon naming it but now that I had decided to post one fic of mine, I am finding it difficult to name it.

OOF this is a question where I will ramble a bit since I'm super passionate about titles so bear with me!! I would say titles depend heavily on what you're trying to convey with your piece or what you want!! Personally, I like titles that play on words/common concepts! I like to think of myself as fairly good with titles heheh, but some come easy and some don't. Sometimes you have to write the fic first in order to get a title (this was me with 'saudade') or sometimes you need a title to even think of a fic. In my case, usually, I have a general idea, then craft a title and get on with a summary. But sometimes i think of genius titles and the fic comes later, a good example of this would be jungkook's high-class series fic 'to turn a bad thing good' (it had a nice ring to it and I crafted the story around the title asdkjdfsl).

Some I take inspiration from famous movies/songs/idioms/phrases, some I just love to play around with words/concepts, sometimes friends totally help you just like how @opaljm helped me with the title 'secrets by the shore' and @inkedtae just recently helped me with the title 'the art of touch' for a royal painter!tae fic i'm planning!!

My literal process with titles goes much like this instant when I was thinking of the title 'the lines between us' for my detective jk one shot!!

i was looking for something consisting of love and hate, since obviously, it's an e2l fic. I thought of the famous idiom 'it's a thin line between love and hate', so i thought 'between love and hate' could be a good title until i found it too cheesy/cliche. My mind kept playing around with the word 'between' however, and I thought of 'the lines between you and me' until my brain wenT NO NO THE LINES BETWEEN US!! GENIUS!! Lmao I thought it perfect for the content and crafted the summary around it~

But in a more practical sense, I just like to really play around with words for my titles and that's how I think of them! Just like with 'maybe i do' or 'here i come', most of the time my titles are a play on words, or the title is a play on the content of a fic. Great examples are 'blueberry muffins' where obviously, seokjin meets his boo once he finds out who's been stealing his favourite blueberry muffins or a draft I've got titled 'heart of the flame' for an angsty firefighter!tae fic I've got planned for his birthday!! I really love titles that roll off the tongue with ease and commonality in the concept, or they can even be titles taken from song/lyrics.

I have two tae pwp's in my drafts with a street racer!tae titled 'sex & expensive cars' inspired from biggie's 'hypnotize' lyrics 'tits and bras, ménage à trois, sex in expensive cars', or a best friends to lovers au titled 'too good at fakin' it' from the song with the same title by sasha sloan!!! Just loads of places you can go looking for titles bubs, I wish you luck!

I want to try a career in volleyball! I still say that with a lot of nervous laughing because it is something I know that is really unexpected of me, haha! Oh, and the club didn't start yet, they are asking for the notes of interest to be sent in the first week of September, and I'm so excited about it that I will be doing so in the 1st day right away! I know it can be rough path, but I am really motivated to give all I got.

And aaa can relate to the self-conscious feeling. I already lost the chances to do a lot of things, even the ones that I wished to do, or couldn't even move when trying because of that... it is so hard, right? Don't even know how I am having the courage to do that right now, but I am already grateful to myself because at least is a try. It is so good that you got to do the same with writing! I'm genuinely happy for you, as you can see it brightens both your day and ours, your readers — and that's so beautiful.

I love the highlight feeling (?) it makes us be able to feel while reading. Like when you are reading a book and you got that moment of "OH, OH! Oh yeah!!! Go for it! Just give it a shot and see where it takes you! :D Even if you don't end up doing it in the end, at least you got to learn. :) You also learn a lot of other things along the way like general life skills or using that knowledge in a completely different type of career. (Like me with writing volleyball stories lol. I also know about a carpenter who did art as a hobby. He became an animator and he was hired because of that carpentry experience to draw backgrounds.) And hehehe. I'm glad you like my writing!

As for title of A Glimpse of Yellow, I originally wasn't planning to have something yellow in every chapter. I knew I wanted it in chapter one and then in chapter two I did it on a whim when I mentioned Atsumu's yellow hair. :D

I think I might actually call my new fic idea Tones of Red (or maybe even Shades of Pink and Blue? I don't know yet. Just brainstorming. lol) I'm already imagining what to do when I drop the title within the story for a big reveal. :D But I'll have to wait months for that to happen, just like with A Glimpse of Yellow. I feel like I planned those two reveals/cliffhangers in the story ages ago. lol.
