Courting with the Consul

To get this blog rolling, here is a collection of headcanons I have about MC/Valerius during their courting phase; not quite dating but not just friendly banter either ! I know others have written to this before too, but I wanted to take a crack at it as well!

It won’t be obvious that the consul has caught feelings for you: he will still be critical and petty towards you, but you do notice that he will start hanging around you more and more, even if he doesn’t need to. Your back and forth banter eventually becomes a welcomed distraction from whatever you’re doing, and there no longer seems to be any weight to his insults anymore.

He’ll make subtle comments about your looks that seem just like his normal insults, but once you think them over when he’s gone, the realization leaves you blushing. (“Honestly, how can such a pretty little thing like you be dumber than dirt?”)

If you both manage to break through the “kids on the playground with a crush” phase, and he begins pursing you more seriously, expect to receive out of the blue invitations to dinner or a show. He likes to keep you on your toes, but his ego will definitely be hurt if you ever say no (because people have lives and can’t just go out to eat at the drop of the hat, fool)

I see gift giving being a major part of his love language; he can afford to take care of you and likes the idea of taking care of you. He’ll try his best to get you things you’d actually like and not just things he likes, but sometimes he may throw in a dress or suit that he thinks you’ll look just ravishing in, even if you’re hesitant to agree

Big big indicator that he’s fully caught feelings is if he serves you a drink; it can be as simple as pouring your wine or preparing you coffee or tea, but the act of him serving you is a big deal. This is a subtle act of submission, and it doesn’t go unnoticed by you. The man who gets served wine all day pouring you a glass is enough to make your entire face red 🥺

He will try to understand some of your likes and interests better (in MC’s case, that would mean magic). He may not be very GOOD at this, but he wants you to feel comfortable talking to him about anything. He’ll still call you a little witch, but the nickname is endearing by now.

BODY CONTACT. his hand is almost always on the small of your back or brushing against your hand or even guiding you by the back of your neck (with your consent/if you’re comfortable with that type of contact) If he needs to be stern with you, he may cup your face or place a finger under your chin so that you can look at him better. All of these are subtle enough for him to do it anywhere (and in front of anyone), and it drives you crazy.

Y E A R N I N G. If you aren’t together, he’s thinking of you and will probably accuse you of hexing him. When you are together, the thought of leaving each other makes him anxious. You’re more than a casual hookup or fling; he likes you, and he doesn’t really like anyone, and this is stressful and new for him.

I don’t see him being jealous necessarily (mainly because I see him being more poly than monogamous which may be me self projecting ), but if, say, someone was also extremely comfortable with you and even knew more things about you than he did, this would probably upset him and make him feel insecure. In MC’s case, someone like Asra would make him feel very small and probably be a point of conflict between the two of you.

You’re going to have to be the one to make things official. Valerius is used to playing mind games with other nobles and that’s about it. His ego will prevent him from making things serious, even if that’s what he really wants. If you were to deny him, he would probably hole up in his room for a month. If you want to be with him, you’re going to have to be the one to make the leap. But the look on his face will 110% be worth it 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
