The Outfit explores the not very well explored crossroads where violent organized crime meets sophisticated haberdashery. While it is a road not often travelled, this collision of worlds turns out to be the basis for a pretty gripping film noir thriller.

The Outfit is highly theatrical. All of the action takes place on one extended set, with a limited cast and the dialogue is a little verbose, but complicated and smart. It all feels wonderfully old-fashioned. It is almost like one of those old parlor mystery plays like Sleuth or Deathtrap, and yet it is also strangely cinematic.

Even the lead cast betrays the film’s theatrical bearing. Mark Rylance has done some fine work on screen (in things like Bridge of Spies and The BFG), but he is probably best known for his theatrical work, as is Simon Russell Beale, who plays the head of a local crime syndicate.

That particular crime syndicate is both a blessing and a curse for Leonard Burling, a former Saville Row cutter (he explains dismissively that a cutter is much more skilled work than being a mere tailor) who has somehow ended up in Chicago in the 1950s.

Burling blames prevailing fashion trends for his trans-Atlantic journey – specifically blue jeans cutting deeply into the market of fine men’s attire. However, although he is very tight-lipped about it (he’s very tight-lipped about almost everything), it appears there may have been some vague unstated trauma back home which forced him to relocate across the pond.

The problem is, blue jeans are in Chicago, too, and his fine clothing is a luxury that not many can afford. Some of the few who can are members of the Boyle crime family, specifically kingpin Roy Boyle (Beale), who has championed Burling’s work, as well as his handsome-but-hot-headed son Richie (Dylan O’Brien) and a scheming lieutenant named Francis (Johnny Flynn).

Not only are they his best clients, but as part of the cost of doing business in their territory, Johnny has to look the other way when they receive covert communications delivered to Burling’s office, or plan jobs and hits in his store. The courtly Burling is familiar with crime from his Cockney roots, so he mostly tries to stay out of the way and is always exceedingly polite.

All he wants is to be left alone to do his work. And to perhaps teach his young apprentice Mable (Zoey Deutch) the practice of cutting and creating fine clothing, in the hopes that maybe someday she will take over his shop.

Or is that all he wants?

He’s always there, always observing things. Periodically he’ll even probe a little bit into what is going on – in a shy, retiring way, of course. There is a war brewing between the Boyle gang and the rival La Fontaine Gang over the territory, and it is quickly ratcheting up in violence. The Boyle Gang is trying to join a mysterious larger entity called “The Outfit,” a shadowy council of organized crime dating back to the Al Capone days.

Whether he wants it or not (and we’re never completely sure until the end), Burling has a front row seat to all of the mayhem.

And once it starts, it goes at a dizzying pace. No one is quite who they seem to be. Everyone is willing to cross and double-cross each other. The war ramps up, bodies start to pile up and still Burling is keeping his secrets.

This is a very smart production – both on a technical level (the sets are perfectly evocative of the era and the clothing is to die for) and on a narrative level (the story is knotty and always keeps you guessing). The acting is also out of this world, particularly Rylance and Deutch as the assistant who is much more complicated and savvier than you might expect in this very male-dominated world.

At one point in the script, Burling points out that perfection is something we all strive for, but which we cannot hope to achieve. This is true, but good for The Outfit for striving. It comes closer than most would expect.

Focus Features has set a moderate release for The Outfit on Feb. 25, 2022.

The pic reps Oscar winner Graham Moore’s directorial debut, and follows Leonard, played by Oscar winner Mark Rylance, an English tailor who used to craft suits on London’s world-famous Savile Row. But after a personal tragedy, he’s ended up in Chicago, operating a small tailor shop in a rough part of town where he makes beautiful clothes for the only people around who can afford them: A family of vicious gangsters. Maze Runner actor Dylan O’Brien also stars.

Moore, who won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for The Imitation Game, co-wrote the screenplay with actor/writer Johnathan McClain (Mad Men). The cast also includes Zoey Deutch (Set It Up) Johnny Flynn (Emma), Nikki Amuka-Bird (NW) and Simon Russell Beale (The Hollow Crown). Producers are Scoop Wasserstein, Ben Browning and Amy Jackson.

The Wizards are accidentally the most fun bad team in basketball

The Wizards are the most fun bad team in the NBA.

The Wizards have beaten the Heat, Nuggets and Celtics in eight days without their best players. How is this happening?

The January Washington Wizards are a group of strangers you’ve never heard of yet they’re beating your favorite team. None of it makes sense. But it’s all true. The Wizards have rolled out a starting lineup of Isaiah Thomas (yes, that one), Gary Payton II (no, not that one), Troy Brown Jr., someone named Johnathan Williams and Ian Mahinmi and beaten the Celtics. A mixture of other assorted no-names have helped knock off the Heat and Nuggets, too, in a span of eight days.

The Wizards are the most joyous team in the NBA at a time they really shouldn’t be. John Wall, the team’s highest-paid player, hasn’t played a game in more than a year. Bradley Beal, the team’s best player, has missed the last three games to a leg injury. The team’s breakout stud Davis Bertans hasn’t played since Dec. 21. First-round rookie Rui Hachimura? Out since Dec. 17 to a groin injury. Thomas Bryant? Out since Dec. 2 to a foot injury. Moe Wagner’s been out since Dec. 11 to an ankle injury.

The Wizards were a bad team to start. They’re in even worse shape now. Yet here we are.

How are they doing this?

Magic, mostly. There’s no other explanation.

Since Dec. 30, the Wizards have played five games. Bradley Beal has played in just one. The next-leading scorers after Beal are Jordan McRae at 22 points per game on just 40 percent shooting, and Ish Smith, who’s scored 21 points per game on an unreal 55 percent shooting with five assists. If you have no idea who McRae is, it’s because he was the No. 58 pick in the 2014 draft who is already on his third team, excluding the year he played in Liga ACB for Boskonia. Smith is a 31-year-old playing for his 11th NBA team.

The next-best scorers include second-year player Troy Brown Jr. scoring 14 points per game, Garrison Mathews, an undrafted rookie from low-major DI Lipscomb scoring 13 points per game and Isaiah Thomas, the once-superstar from the Celtics, scoring nine points.

How’d they beat the Heat?

The Wizards didn’t just beat the Heat, they crushed them by 18 points. This was the Garrison Mathews night. Yeah, that rookie from Lipscomb scored 28 on nine field goal attempts. In addition to him, Ian Mahinmi — a once outcast overpaid big — scored 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting. And McRae scored 29 on 14 field goal attempts.

How’d they beat the Nuggets?

The Wizards didn’t just beat the Nuggets, either. They crushed them by 14 points in the first of two Ish Smith nights. Smith scored 32 points on 15-of-24 shooting with eight assists and three steals off the bench. Brown Jr. contributed with 25 points, and Isaac Bonga (a guy traded to make the Anthony Davis to L.A. deal work,) scored 15. Jamal Murray’s 39 didn’t matter. The Wizards’ bench scored 92 points!

How’d they beat the Celtics?

The Wizards beat the Celtics by five points on a night Kemba Walker didn’t play — but still! Smith went off again for 27 points on 18 shots, McRae scored 19, Isaiah Thomas 17 and Brown Jr. 15. Washington held Boston to 35 percent shooting from the field and 22 percent from distance. Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Gordon Hayward had just 50 points combined on 55 shots.

So... Are the Wizards actually good?

No. The Wizards are being outscored by .6 points per 100 possessions since Dec. 30, including double-digit losses to the Magic and Trail Blazers. The Wizards still stink. They won’t make the playoffs. But damn, if you’re going to tank, this is absolutely how.

For as bad as the old, tanking Sixers were they provided nightly entertainment rolling out nobody after nobody until a somebody — hi, Robert Covington — emerged. And there weren’t many wins, which helped the tank — hi, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons — but when they came, oh man, were they fun.

And that’s what the Wizards are doing right now. And everyone’s having fun!

Washington is without franchise direction, stuck with one star injured for maybe the entire season again, and another star entering his prime without sufficient talent surrounding him to compete. These wacky lineups are a way to one day relieve Beal’s pain. Maybe Garrison Mathews is legit! Maybe Troy Brown Jr. is a star in the making. The Wizards are finding out, and accidentally winning in the process.

For once, it’s fun to be a Wiz fan.

Bryant's 26 lead Wizards past Celtics for 1st win in restart

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) Thomas Bryant had 26 points and nine rebounds to help the Washington Wizards beat the Boston Celtics 96-90 on Thursday for their lone win in the restart.

Troy Brown Jr. added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Wizards, who had long been eliminated from the playoff race and had lost their first seven games in the bubble. The Wizards avoided being the only winless team in the restart.

Washington coach Scott Brooks knew coming in the focus would be on building toward next season. Bradley Beal, second in the league this season at 30.5 points per game, opted out of the restart with a lingering shoulder issue. Davis Bertans, No. 2 on the Wizards in scoring and a top 3-point threat, didn't want to risk injury with free agency ahead. And All-Star guard John Wall missed the entire season recovering from a torn Achilles tendon.

''I think we had a great experience here,'' Brooks said. ''We had a lot of good growth, a lot of good bonding experience. A lot of positives came out of it. The only thing -- we didn't win the (games) that we wanted to win.''

The Celtics, who already were locked into a playoff matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers, rested their starters.

Rookie Javonte Green took advantage and scored a season-high 23 points for Boston.

''He played with great intensity on both ends of the floor, was trying to do all the right stuff and obviously made a big impact offensively and did some really good things on the glass,'' Celtics coach Brad Stevens said.

Semi Ojeleye added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Celtics.

Both teams shot below 40% overall. The Wizards led 78-77 after three quarters, then outscored the Celtics 18-13 in the fourth. The Wizards held the Celtics to 22% shooting in the final 12 minutes.

Bryant averaged 18.6 points and 8.9 rebounds in the bubble. His season averages entering the game were 13.0 points and 7.2 boards per contest.
