One might think a deputy sheriff officer crushing hard on and attempting to court a girl barely outside her teen years was an act of grooming. But they never play it that way. You never see Nicole harassing Waverly. You just see her watching her from across the room or whatever. She keeps at arms length from her until Waverly is the one to decide where she wants the relationship to go and practically does assault her. Or at least, she would have if Nicole wasn’t waiting for it.

But I really like how they show that despite Nicole being an older woman, an officer of the law at that, you only ever really see Waverly making the moves on her until Waverly is expecting reciprocation from her. Only then does Nicole make her own moves on her.

It’s not just the notion of consent that’s really well shown and communicated between them. It’s also the notions of respect and patience. So despite them getting together pretty quickly in the show, there is somewhat a sort of slow-burnishness to their romantic/sexual WLW representation because nothing gets all that heavy with them until they both want it.

And if anything, it really does show you what kind of person Nicole is with letting Waverly set their pace. When Waverly says “fast”, Nicole accompanies her and does her best to satisfy her wants and needs

I really love that dynamic between them. It is so Xena and Gabrielle early days. So experienced woman lover and baby gay vibes. But both Xena and Nicole show the level of care that they should always take with this because it would be a completely different story if either Xena or Nicole drove the relationship they have.

Nicole introduces herself and makes it known that she’s interested. But after that - nothing but space. It’s not until Waverly closes that space does she act.

That’s how you do positive old/young romances in TV.

Like I said,… you never really get to this point in a WLW love story in TV art/entertainment unless the required 3 things are present all throughout the show.

1. Both characters in the WLW ship have to be main characters with their own respectful individual arcs.

2. It has to be believable. You have to see the journey start to finish for it to feel earned and be foundational.

3. The creator and actors have to care about the characters and keep the focus on their development.

You can have great chemistry. You can have great writing. But REPRESENTATION is about SEEING it. Only then do moments like what is illustrated in this beautiful video hit and work and FEEL strong and substantial. The reason why WayHaught is great WLW representation is because they don’t pull you away from not just the love and devotion these characters feel for each other, but also the way in which they maintain those feelings of love and devotion. How they build on the representation and development for both characters individually as well as together so that you see everything you need to to feel that it goes that deep and it’s called for for them to be this ride or die for each other in high-intensity moments of passion.

That’s what representation is about. In the end it’s a combination of what the creator intends and how the actors portray what is intended that is what you see. The rest may be entirely subjective and that’s fine. But the people creating and portraying that ship have to deliver the content and convey it well to the audience. Then the audience takes it and interprets what they will out of it to make it more meaningful and impactful to them. But they can’t do that if they’re not provided what will allow them the space and scope to do that.

Unfortunately, half the time with representation in the TV art/entertainment industry the audience are the ones doing all the damn work. It’s not good enough.
