Gladiator (2000) When Commodus (Phoenix) discovers that his father sees him unfit to rule Rome. He betrays him, and sentences Maximus (Crowe) and his family to death. Maximus must fight his way through being a gladiator to exact his revenge on the corrupt Emperor. Gladiator has always been a film that’s known for being great. It’s no secret that this is a classic, that being said, I rewatched it in 4K and fell in love with it all over again. Way before Joker, Joaquin Phoenix takes to the stand as Commodus, a slimy and manipulative leader. But like joker, Phoenix delivers a fantastic performance as him, alongside Russell Crowe who plays the virtuous leader betrayed by Commodus. Both of the lead actors in this film work perfectly together and it shows. The fight scenes, landscapes and just everything about the visuals in this are beautiful. The colosseum looks grand, the fights are gritty, and I’m so glad I grabbed this in 4K. It’s that man again, Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard on the soundtrack and it’s stunning. From the atmosphere to the score where it matters the most, Now We Are Free has become a staple in film history and is instantly recognisable. It’s no surprise that the film won 5 BAFTA’s and 5 Academy awards. It’s a stunning masterpiece again from director Ridley Scott and shouldn’t be overlooked in anyone’s movie list. Overall, if you’re looking for a classic, to inspire you, to move you, to captivate you, look no further. Für seine Rolle in The Master ist Joaquin Phoenix ein heißer Kandidat auf den begehrtesten Filmpreis der Welt. Der Schauspieler, der bereits für Walk The Line für den Oscar nominiert war, legt darauf aber absolut keinen Wert und bezeichnet die Auszeichnung als Bullshit. „Das ist eine Karotte [die einem vor die Nase gehalten wird], aber es ist die widerlichste Karotte, die ich jemals probiert habe. Ich will diese Karotte nicht. Alles ist vollkommen subjektiv. Die Leute werden gegeneinander aufgehetzt. Es ist die dümmste Sache der Welt“, sagte Phoenix in einem Interview. Die Zeit, die er in die Oscar-Promotion von Walk the Line steckte, bezeichnet er als eine der schlimmsten seines Lebens. Der Schauspieler war bereits für Ridley Scotts Gladiator für die beste Nebenrolle nominiert.
