New York, NY -- Jharis Yokley will be releasing his debut album Sometimes, Late At Night on May 3 via LA's Rainbow Blonde Records. Last week, he shared the first single from the upcoming release "Move On," a song that defies the boundaries of a singular genre. The hefty track spans just about 4 minutes long with thumping hi-hats, hefty blown out drums, and otherworldly synths. "Move On" is a track that ruminates on a past relationship, trying to let go of someone but simply unable to do so. The instrumental layers create a stirring rumbling that feels ready to burst at any moment, like you're right on the verge of a catalytic scream.

Quote
I hope people understand that I’m trying to help develop new repertoire for the new frontier for jazz singers,” James says. “To call something as standard is a decision of what we deem important in society, whose voice should be heard in perpetuity.
José James in an interview by John Murph in Downbeat. José James Finds His Baduizm
On & On is a wonderful album.
I had just heard some musicians complaining about "young people today" or some such thing. I am old and out of touch but that diss had me wondering about young singers and how I might find out about them.  José James is not really young, but he's a generation removed from me. And I like his music a lot. So I went to  YouTube and watched a set on the Millennium Stage at The Kennedy Center.
The line up: Drums - Jharis Yokley, Pianist- Julius Rodriguez, Saxophonist - Ebban Dorsey, and Bassist - Ben Williams. It is a fantastic band and crossing generations in so many interesting ways.
When I opened up The Healer from Eryikah Badu's 2008 album, New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), I noticed comments about what a big impression the album had made when they were very young.
James remarks about the album: “Jazz singing has always been about interpreting the highest level of standards of your time. And for my generation Erykah Badu has been one of the most innovative and incisive songwriters. Her work has proven to be groundbreaking in a social, musical and artistic sense.”  It’s great to hear young people engage with this music.

José James - My Favorite Things - a salute to Coltrane from his forthcoming Christmas album
John Coltrane has been a huge influence on me, both as a man and as an artist. Not only musically, but spiritually. He was unafraid to put God into his music and to attempt to unite humanity through sound. He embraced music from all over the world: India, Africa, Asia and Latin America. He worked with the masters of generations preceding his (Dizzy, Duke, Monk, Johnny Hodges), masters of his generation (Miles, Eric Dolphy, Elvin Jones, McCoy) and embraced future legends (Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Rashied Ali). He also embraced a business model for the future before his death, making moves to contribute and open performing arts centers in NYC and recording music for his own label. I’ve embraced that spirit with Rainbow Blonde Records and I’m proud to say that not only are we involved in the music, recording and production - that we own our own masters. Thank you Trane for your vision and example of a powerful musical and spiritual mind in our times.

Interview with José James
We had the pleasure of interviewing José James over Zoom video!  Out now, the jazz voice of the hip hop generation José James (Rainbow Blonde Records) releases his first ever Christmas album Merry Christmas from José James. In addition to the album release, José also premieres the official performance video for the original track "Christmas in New York" today. The contemporary album celebrates the holiday season while honoring classic jazz and pop records of the 1950s. Combining the classic jazz-crooner elegance of Frank Sinatra and Nat “King” Cole with the earthy sophistication of soul legends Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, the ten track Merry Christmas from José James takes listeners on a world-class holiday experience from one of the greatest living voices in jazz. Listeners can find two original tracks, “Christmas in New York” and “Christmas Day” along with popular ballads such as “The Christmas Song,” “White Christmas,” “Let it Snow” and “This Christmas,” a modern twist on the Donny Hathaway holiday favorite. In James' version, he musically brings an aspect of R&B and hip-hop to the mostly Jazz collection. Songwriting for the project was spearheaded by José James and his partner, recently Grammy nominated Talia Billig. The album’s studio band features Grammy winning and nominated all stars Ben Williams (bass), Aaron Parks(piano), Jharis Yokley (drums) and Marcus Strickland (soprano saxophone). Produced by José James and Brian Bender and recorded by Ariel Shafir at Dreamland Studios, the album was mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios. The session was recorded completely live on 2” tape and mixed in LCR (left-center-right) by Brian Bender at Motherbrain West. “It’s the perfect album to put on whenever there’s a certain spirit in the air,” James says. “I hope that people can feel a little bit of the joy and the wonder, year round, that 8-year-old José felt, not only about Christmas and all the obvious things—the ornaments, the tree, the holiday season—but also the music,” he continued. A 13 date tour to support the album will launch at SF Jazz in San Francisco on November 27th and conclude at New York’s City Winery on December 14th. Stops also include Seattle, Portland, Santa Cruz, LA, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Minneapolis and Chicago. (All tour dates listed below). About José James James, a Minneapolis, MN native who spent most of his career in New York, was discovered by Gilles Peterson in London before his major label debut with Blue Note Records. He has produced and written 11 albums covering the best of jazz, pop, hip-hop and R&B. In 2017, José made his screen debut with a performing role in Fifty Shades Darker. He now lives in Amsterdam with Talia Billig, his partner and Grammy nominated songwriter. We want to hear from you! My Brightest Diamond at Cafe 939
All right, so I just got back from Boston. Took the night off from work to check out My Brightest Diamond playing at Cafe 939’s Red Room, a small venue attached to Berklee. Damn fine show, that.
Just her on guitar and synth, and Jharis Yokley on drums (this dude is a monster on the skins BTW, an absolute beast), and they utterly killed it. She’s a showperson of stellar caliber, bouncing onstage after dancing through the audience with It’s Me On The Dance Floor, and she didn’t stop moving the entire show. And neither did I. A’course, now my legs are paying for it, but it was totally worth it.
The show was mostly stuff from the new album A Million To One, mixed with a few older songs like Dorian, This Is My Hand, and the encore show-ender Pressure, as well as a snappy cover of Bow Wow Wow’s I Want Candy. I have to say, she really packed a helluva lot of show into an hour and fifteen minutes. She got the audience up and going from start to finish, and yanked opener Tunde Olaniran on stage for Supernova. Just an excellent time, all around. Y’all should check her out, you get a chance.
