Multnomah County owns four of the five large movable bridges: Hawthorne, Morrison, Burnside, and Broadway bridges, as well as Sellwood and Sauvie Island bridges. Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) owns state and interstate highway structures, i.e. Ross Island, Marquam, Fremont, St. Johns, Oregon City, and Abernethy bridges, and across the Columbia River, Glenn Jackson Bridge and in a joint agreement with WA state, the Interstate Bridge.
Other notable bridges in Portland Oregon that do not cross the river.
Balch Gulch Bridge on Thurman Street in Northwest Portland, built for the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition. One of about 150 highway and pedestrian bridges owned and maintained by the City of Portland, this unusual hanging deck truss is the oldest highway deck truss bridge in Oregon. Vista Avenue Viaduct, a 248-foot open-spandrel reinforced concrete highway arch located 128 feet above SW Jefferson St on the way to US Highway 26 in Portland's West Hills.
Tilikum Crossing: Portland's Bridges and a New Icon by Donald MacDonald & Ira Nadel (2020)
Portland, Oregon's innovative and distinctive landmark, Tilikum Crossing Bridge of the People, is the first major bridge in the U.S, carrying trains, busses, streetcars, bicycles, and pedestrians- but no private automobiles. When regional transportation agency TriMet began planning for the first bridge to be constructed across the Willamette River since 1973, the goal was to build a something symbolic, which would represent the progressive nature of the Twenty-First Century. Part of that progressiveness was engaging in a public process that involved neighborhood associations, small businesses, environmentalists, biologists, bicycling enthusiasts, designers, engineers, and the City Council. The result of this collaboration was an entirely unique bridge that increased the transportation capacity of the city while allowing Portlanders to experience their urban home in an entirely new way—car-free. In this book, the award winning architect of Tilikum Crossing, Donald MacDonald, and co-author Ira Nadel, tell the story of Portland through its bridges. Written in a friendly voice, readers will learn how Portland came to be known as "The City of Bridges" and the home to this new icon in the city's landscape. MacDonald uses 98 of his own drawings to illustrate the history of Portland river crossings and to show the process of building a Twenty-First Century landmark

Quilcene Loop
26 June 2023
Tumblr media
I’ve had ideas for rides in this corner of the Olympics for a long time, but it took a recent piece by Jan Heine on the Rene Herse Blog to spur my interest enough to get me out here. I picked up coffee, caught the ferry in Edmonds, and was pedaling from the Quilcene Ranger Station by 9:00. Despite what I was afraid might be a very long, grueling day of climbing, I was back to the car by 2:30. The total ascent was more than 5600’, but while the climbing was certainly hard, it was never painfully so. On the other hand, I was very happy to reach the final summit.
I rode the loop counterclockwise, which meant that the elevation ratcheted upwards in several separate climbs over more than 30 miles before the much quicker drop back to sea level at the end. The route crosses Bon Jon Pass at Mile 25, but the high point (3500’) comes later at Mile 32. All of the climbing was on gravel, while much of the descent was on pavement, which was my main rationale for doing the loop in this direction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The downhill at the end was great, although it would have been greater had there not been an uphill segment half way down. Much of the descent is on a single-lane paved road (generally good surface, but with some big divots that require some caution), although there was an annoying section of fresh gravel near the bottom (which masked, but didn’t eliminate some nasty washboard). The final couple of miles are back on a regular two-lane road. This side would make a great climb if you simply wanted a stiff 1000+meter ascent without the longer loop (but that short gravel section would be tough on a road bike).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I saw almost no cars the entire ride. There were a few in the first and the last few miles, but that was about it, other than a few parked cars at trailheads. I stopped and chatted with one guy on an ATV who was hopelessly turned around - but I think I got him headed back in the right direction. It’s pretty easy to get lost back here. The roads aren’t marked well, the terrain is confusing, the trees are thick, and in the morning, clouds still obscured the sun. I was certainly grateful for having my route loaded on my GPS (I use RWGPS and a Wahoo Bolt) and for Gaia GPS which I use for offline maps on my phone (I also use a Garmin Messenger for tracking when I’m away from cell coverage).
The entire ride is in the trees, except for a few clear cuts and a couple borrow pits. I got a few glimpses of the surrounding hills and cliffs, occasional glimpses of Mount Townsend (the trailhead for which is near the high point of this route) and one view of Mount Constance(?) (with a large Texas camper van parked strategically in front), but it’s mainly just a lot of trees. Above 3000’, the rhododendrons start showing up in the understory.
The last time (the only other time) I was up here was in 2016 when I hiked up Mount Townsend (hshipman: Mount Townsend).

This process is analyzed in the article through a reading of medical publications from the first half of the twentieth century regarding silicosis in Colombian mining. Through the history of silicosis it has been possible to study the adoption of the concept of "occupational disease" and the birth of occupational medicine in Colombia. It has become an important object of historical study for both social and occupational medicine. Silicosis is a disease associated with mining work, whose importance was first recognized in the medical, economic and legal fields in the 1930s. The posters produced by trade unions also included references to the social determinants of risk, another of the elements undervalued by expert culture. Many of the posters produced by the European trade unions from the 1960s onwards provided less determinist representations of prevention activity, moving the focus of attention away from the conduct of workers and including the new risks faced by the European working population as well as health problems previously ignored by posters, such as occupational diseases. This not only provided alternative interpretations of work hazards and prevention, which were particularly radical in the case of the Italian worker model, but also made the poster into a form of demand that went beyond the instruction and persuasion to which expert culture had confined it. However, this selection of posters eloquently illustrates the creation by trade unions of a new prevention culture. This concept revolved around the central importance of workers as the sole targets of the prevention messages and as being predominantly responsible for causing and avoiding injury. The ‘language of posters’ during most of this period helped to consolidate a concept of occupational accident prevention based on expert culture and employer interests. This book provides an excellent record of the different prevention cultures that inspired the production of posters and prevention campaigns throughout the 20th century.

Hey!! Did I get your attention? 🤪 good ⠀
I would like to introduce you to “The Good Trouble Cowl” designed by Karen Clements
Karen reached out to me and shared a story that instantly made me know I had to get involved. The fear of taking a risk at publicly speaking up against racism. The sole purpose of this Cowl is to support the work of Black Lives Matter in Jefferson County WA! This is the epitome of stand in the gap ✊🏾 ⠀
This is a small rural community so you can imagine the Black community, which is severely underrepresented, could use your help. This cowl is available by donation only starting as low as $5. ⠀
I already gave my heart, my smile and $25. If you would like to make a cowl AND help the BLM community, click the link Thanks 🤗
Karen said she was inspired by the following words ⠀
“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”⠀
~Rep. John Lewis 1940-2020
