HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEAN DUBUFFET!

Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) “looked to the margins of the everyday—the art of prisoners, psychics, the uneducated, and the institutionalized—to liberate his own creativity, coining the term “Art Brut” in 1947 as a reflection of the creative possibilities outside the conventions of the day.”

“Art Brut”, or “raw art”, as described by Dubuffet as self-taught artists presenting “works produced by persons unscathed by artistic culture, where mimicry plays little or no part (contrary to the activities of intellectuals). These artists derive everything...from their own depths, and not from the conventions of classical or fashionable art." their experiences outside the restrictive bounds of society.”

Here we see “Fait Memorables I”, 1978, a ‘Dubuffet over the buffet’ for art collectors in Westchester. The parchment clad cabinet from @mattalianodesign is a cabinet originally designed by @jeanmichelfrank, in a room we designed with a remarkable custom ‘Bauhaus Red’ wall paint developed by @donaldkaufmancolor.

Art Brut has come to include “Outsider Art” created by psychiatric patients, prisoners and outcasts, the works illustrate their fragile mental states and unorthodox perspectives of the world.

Although the roots of Outsider Art can be traced back thousands of years, intuitive depictions. Outsider Art has become both normalized and celebrated; the @outsiderartfair was founded in New York City in 1993 and remains a thrilling and provocative opportunity to see and purchase Art Brut.

Hoy tuvimos el placer de recorrer con mucha tranquilidad el "Castillo de Mandl", ubicado en La Cumbre. Guillermo Toribio nos esperaba con su pasión por el lugar y con su conocimiento de las tantas historias que allí se cruzan. En este primer posteo pongo el foco en la decoración de los espacios interiores encargados por Fritz Mandl a la mítica Casa Comte, que introdujo el diseño moderno de Jean Michel Frank en la Argentina. Mandl, un industrial austríaco que escapó de una Europa a punto de precipitarse en el abismo, encontró en el Valle de la Punilla un refugio donde recibir a aristócratas y artistas europeos que no comulgaban con el nazismo. Efectuada la compra, su nuevo propietario procedió a reconvertir el castillete medieval construido a pedido del Dr. Vasallo en una mansión pintoresquista rodeada de un espectacular parque y con una de las mejores vistas de la ciudad.
